Ohio State a Six Seed in South Region, Opens Against Dayton in Buffalo

The journey to March has been a turbulent ride for Ohio State. Highs and lows number in the dozens with a season-long progression mimicking an electrocardiogram. After 127 days and 34 games, Selection Sunday – the moment all the offseason work is geared toward – arrived.

The Buckeyes’ road to the Final Four in Dallas begins in Buffalo.

Ohio State, a No. 6 seed in the South Region, will play No. 11 seed Dayton in the opening round on Thursday. If the Buckeyes win, they’ll play the winner of No. 3 seed Syracuse and No. 14 seed Western Michigan on Saturday.

“If we get into one of those funks that we got in a few times this season, our season will be over," said junior forward Sam Thompson, following Saturday’s loss to Michigan.

NCAA Tournament game times will be announced tonight.

I take nothing for granted with this team. Just saw that zone staring us in the face should we win.

InvertMyVeer's picture

You definitely can't look past UD here. Other than a bad January slump Dayton has been a pretty tough team with some quality wins. They beat Gonzaga in the Maui Invitational, beat St. Louis in St. Louis (for the first time in a very long time). They ended the season winning 10 of their last 12. If Ohio State doesn't play well they could very easily be upset by the Flyers.

Nobody is disputing that he struggled in Columbus, nor is anyone insinuating he got a less-than-fair chance. However, he's a college-aged kid, and a competitor. What people are saying is that, perhaps, in his mind, he has a chance to "show all those Buckeye haters" and "prove all of those people wrong," even if that isn't the case and people aren't saying that.

conspiracy. always draw a small ohio school somewhere

UrbanCulture's picture

we have played xavier, UC, and now dayton in recent years. Every years since 2007 (when i started paying attention) we have had at least one other ohio school in our bracket except for last year, when notre dame was favored to take us on in the second round.

RedStorm45's picture

1) small ohio school = every other Ohio school

2) this is the first time that it's been an Ohio matchup in the first round.

3) multiple Ohio schools make it every year.  Odds are, with this whole 4 region thing, we might play one now and then.

nice conspiracy.

+2 HS
Run_Fido_Run's picture

I think he's using "conspiracy" in a colloquial sense.

Let me put it this way: after I saw the first seven match ups of the South included FLA, KU, and Syracuse, and they were getting to reveal the last one with the 6 seed, I would have bet $10,000 at even-money odds, right there on the spot, that that was where they parked Ohio State. When they revealed the final match up, at first I was pissed that I was right, but then I almost had to laugh when I saw that the NCAA committee put in an extra little tweak by having the Buckeyes face Dayton.

I found it quite telling when Seth Davis then taunted Ohio State with the "can't duck 'em now, Thad!" comment. I know Davis is not on the committee, but he's probably wired in with some of the guys who are. Well, these selections are supposed to have zero percent to do with "politics," but Davis sure seemed to relish that angle.

I don't think the selections were a conspiracy, but they did remind me how much I'd to see the NCAA disbanded, right after they take the NCAA Tournament cash cow from those corrupt clowns.

+4 HS
RedStorm45's picture

The committee has always put together some "made for TV" matchups.  Kevin Durant v.s. Michael Beasley a few years back.  They've set up OSU to face UC or Xavier in later rounds - but that's only if those teams wins.  They gave Wichita a team with 5 NBA players in the 2nd round - if Kentucky manages to win.  Gonzaga and AZ have some history...if Gonzaga can win.  Nova will either play a Philly team (St. Joes) or a former Big East rival (UConn) in the 2nd round.  TV runs this show for sure.

UrbanCulture's picture

well I suppose my view of small is a school smaller than osu (only one iv gone to)

could never be a first round matchup unless u want to give one of them a 15-16 seed

4 ohio teams in four different regions sounds good to me!

I will have to do some research on how they treat teams from states that also get multiple bids like Florida and California to see if they get similar treatment.

One of the worst draws possible for us. 1st we play the smaller in-state school with a chip on their shoulder and a former player that transfered. Then we get the best zone team in the tournament,a defense we have really struggled with this year because of our lack of creators and jump shooters. After that we get who? Kansas? a team with 2 of the top 5 lottery picks come next NBA draft. Even after all that Louisville getting a #4seed and Cincinnati at a #5 those fans and teams should feel absolutely robbed. At a 6, you're going to get a 11 that is a regional rival if possible, and a team that's only a couple wins from a 6-8. Dayton and others  fit that bill, so the bucks would have it tough anywhere. Even though they came from 18 back against Neb, their shooting will cost them especially against a zone that Dayton loves. I hope they can sneak by Dayton, but Smityh and Williams have to show up. Unfortunately Carft and Smith continue to shoot volume, but miserably off target. If the Flyers win, it's an upset to all of us, but if the Bucks win, they probably flame out in 2nd against the Cuse. Very tough year...

I know they do the matchups based on regional stuff but I wish they would just rank all the teams 1 thru 68.  64-68 play the play-in games and then #1 overall seed gets 64, the second 1 seed gets 63, third one see 62 and so on down the line.  Then bracket wise the number one overall seed should get the worst 2 seed if they were to meet in the elite 8, second 1 seed then gets the second worst 2 seed and matchup that way as well.  Rather than moving teams away from a seed bc of regionality or conference affiliation

I get your point but your math us messed up, to get from 68 to 64 teams, you need four games, and thus eight teams, so it's 61 through 68 play, the four winners are the four 16 seeds.

OSU was definitely given no happy endings with this seeding.  Looks like someone wants Craft out before the Sweet 16.  I mean seriously, Florida, UCLA, Syracuse and Kansas in the same bracket - I call setup NCAA Overlords, what a crock!

_ichigan, the weakest  of the 2 seeds placed for a Witchy matchup, although I don't believe they will be there long anyway. Little Brother of the green and white were given no love either, at least with the seed they were handed.   Wisky though, was given a hand job with a promise of more.  Hope Iowa wins the play in, more B1G teams the better.  Can't wait for this thing to start.

Go Bucks!

Win vs Dayton, probably lose to Syracuse.  I really doubt WMU pulls that upset off, but you never know.

This region sets up for the possibility of many rematches from past tourneys for OSU: Syracuse, Kansas, and Florida.

Assuming we handle Sibert and the Flyers, the chance to play Syracuse could be good or bad. If the same team that lost to NCST and GA TECH shows up, the Buckeyes could probably win.

I don't mean this with any disrespect whatsoever to the Basketball Buckeyes as I am a monster of a Buckeye Football fan, but as a Daytonian I have to say GO FLYERS!!!  BRING IT HOME FOR THE 937!!

I don't always downvote, but I do always downvote a Michigan fan trolling the Buckeye boards.

At least it's not for the 734.

My big brother is a UD grad and a Flyer fanatic.  If we lose to the Flyers it will be a very long off season for me. Please bring your A game OSU.

Well, Mr. Sibert, you got your wish, but along with it you got Mr. Craft as well...good luck with that..GO BUCKS!!!

OSU got a bad draw, all Ohio teams did. This would be a heck of a stage for Sibert to stick it to the Bucks. This game will be very interesting .

Can't duck them anymore?  This bullshit again?  So tired of hearing this every time we play another Ohio school in the tourney.  Gus Johnson was basically creaming his pants repeatedly when we played Xavier like he had popped multiple Viagras before the game.  Then OSU/UC a couple of years ago...ugh.  It's the NCAA tournament - all I care about is advancing to the next round, and getting as far as possible.  Tired of these inferiority complexes, or attempts by the media to create stories where there isn't one.

cant remember the last time 2 in state teams played each other in the first round. seems odd that the selection committee did that

A lot of people forget that ohio is a good bb state and osu is bound to c0llide with proven programs like uc, x, and dayton. Bottom line is not conspiracy because most prople dont really care about ohio state....especially after a mediocre season. Take away the cupcakes and the bucks are a .500 team. Can't blame committee if osu loses to dayton. Want to,play american? Then win your conference. Earn it.

Dayton will throw everything at tOSU. If the Bucks get past them and Cuse gets by WMU, it will take a small miracle to get past the 2-3 zone with the inconsistent shooting we have seen all year long. This team has the ability to play with anyone but also could lose in the first round.
