Upon Further Review

Locker LoveOnly a frosh, when Locker learns to pass, watch out.

At the beginning of the season, several writers and many more bloggers pointed out that James Laurinaitis was perhaps the most overrated player in the Big Ten. I admit, I thought the program's prestige factor and his famous father may have had more to do with him winning the Nagurski last season than what he did on the football field. He had a good year, but others arguably had better seasons and he got away with one.

Through the first three games of the 2007 season, though, Little Animal is delivering a gargantuan STFU to his critics with his play on the field. Defensive POW for the first two games (and sure to be for Washington as well), Laurinaitis is everywhere for this team right now. His first interception, coming at the OSU 13 with Washington driving in the 2nd quarter was a highlight reel tip of a shuffle pass back to himself.

His next one may have been even better. With the Buckeyes holding on to a 17-7 lead with a few minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, Locker and the Huskies were driving with the crowd and a little bit of momentum back on their side. Washington had moved the ball from their own 20 to the Buckeye 23 when on 3rd and 5, Laurinaitis faked a blitz and then dropped back into zone coverage before snatching a Locker pass on its way to the intended receiver.

If he continues this play, he'll have his 2nd straight Nagurski and other accolades -- all earned.

Other musings..

  • We're pretty quick to point out Belisari the 2nd, but there were times in the first half where Boeckman looked like "Krenzel the 2nd". Todd's lucky the Husky defense can't catch.
  • Are the Buckeyes a dirty team? There seemed to be quite a few face-rakes and helmet snatchings by the defense yesterday.
  • The coaching staff is clearly saving a still dinged Beanie for the long haul. If Tress wanted to, Beanie could have rushed 30 times for 250 yards yesterday.
  • Admit it, you were feeling sorry for the Wolverines and that combined with your unbridled hate of the Irish brought a smile to your face when you saw the score of their game yesterday. We anticipate the coming Notre Dame football death spiral, including the loss of their TV rights until they come begging to join the Big Ten. Can you beleive that just a couple of years ago, the media was hyping Weis v. Tressel ahead of their bowl meeting? Now that's funny.

Buckeyes Ace First Road Test

wellsrunning.jpg Beanie Wells punished the Huskies with 135 yards on 24 carries including a 14 yard TD.

The opening half wasn't easy on the eyes but the Buckeyes rebounded in the second, scoring 24 straight points en route to a 33-14 road victory over Washington in front the third largest crowd ever in Husky Stadium. The win was the 200th of The Vest's career and marked the 21st consecutive regular season win for OSU, tying the school record set back in '67-'69.

The Buckeyes let Washington hang around in the first half due to poor QB play, penalties and shoddy special teams resulting in a 7-3 halftime deficit. Todd Boeckman was either rattled or huffing glue on his way to completing only 7 of his 15 first half passes including two that should have been intercepted. His first half performance was matched by the special teams as PK Ryan Pretorious missed a 44 yarder on the opening drive and had a 32 yarder blocked while the longsnappers took turns shooting short hops to either the holder or punter AJ Trapasso. The blocked FG was set up by an illegal procedure call on 4th and 1 at the UW 10 yard line as Ben Person clearly moved early to pull on the play that would've resulted in a Beanie Wells TD run. The icing on the stank cake known as the first half was a 9 play, 85 yard drive on the defense culminated by a 23 yard TD pass from Jake Locker to Anthony Russo giving Washington momentum and a 7-3 lead at intermission.

It appeared the Huskies had seized the momentum but the game turned in OSU's favor on Washington's first drive of the 2nd half. Locker led his offense to the Buckeye 19 yard line but the defense stiffened forcing three straight negative yardage plays and a blocked FG attempt giving OSU the ball at its own 29. After a first down run, Todd Boeckman hit Brian Robiskie in stride for a 68 yard TD pass to start the onslaught. Husky Curtis Shaw then fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the 25 yard line setting up Beanie Wells' 14 yard TD run giving OSU a 17-7 lead 6 minutes into the 3rd quarter. The defense took over from there forcing three 3-and-outs and grabbing 2 INTs in Washington's final 5 drives preceding a cheap TD drive in the last two minutes. Tressel was clearly annoyed that Ty Willingham was throwing passes after Tressel had called off the dogs running Antonio Henton three straight times on the drive before so he turned Brandon Saine loose on the final play of the game resulting in a 37 yard TD.

OFFENSE:

Apparently tired of taking heat, the offensive line simply overpowered the Husky defense creating gaps the size of Paris Hilton's allowing the RBs to get to the second line of defense unimpeded. The result was 263 total rushing yards on 46 carries equating to a healthy 5.7 yards per carry. In addition to Beanie's 135 yards, Brandon Saine tallied 83 on just 9 carries including bursts of 28 and 37. You gotta like the way in which Beanie and Saine's styles play off each other. Wells can wear down a defense with punishing runs softening it up for Saine's quickness. If the line can duplicate today's performance as the season progresses this team is going to be tough to beat.

boeckmanwash.jpg AP Photo/Elaine Thompson

As noted, Boeckman was terrible in the first half. If not for two dropped INT's he might have even been pulled for a series to get his act together. To his credit, he bounced back with a superb 2nd half going 7-10 with 145 yards and 2 TDs including the perfectly thrown bomb to Brian Robiskie. On the day, Robo finished with 4 catches for 107 yards while Brian Hartline had another solid game with 88 yards on 6 catches. Boeckman's 218 yards passing coupled with the 263 rushing gave OSU their first game achieving at least 200 passing and rushing since Oct. 28, 2006 against Minnesota.

Besides the dominance of the offensive line, the other key to today's performance is the zero turnovers allowed.

DEFENSE:

While not as dominating from a stats perspective as the previous two weeks, the Silver Bullets made big plays when they needed with the excpetion of the 85 yard TD march to close the first half. That possession was especially frustrating as OSU allowed Locker to convert a 3rd and 4 and then a 3rd and 11 before giving up the 23 yard TD catch. Discounting the meaningless TD with less than 2 minutes to go, the Buckeyes stopped the Huskies on 10 of 11 possessions.

animalhoman.jpg

The pass defense held Locker to just 16 of 33 for 153 yards including 2 INTs by James Laurinaitis and another by Malcolm Jenkins. I'm still a little against the idea of Jenkins playing safety/centerfield instead of covering the other team's best receiver but I don't wanna argue with Jim Heacock; I'm sure he has his reasons. For now, I'll accept it since Anderson Russell is proving he's all the way back from his injury, Donald Washington is playing adequately and Kurt Coleman is always around the ball. I think the one DB that somewhat concerns me right now is Chimdi Chekwa. He covers his man but has yet to develop any ball skills. Jenkins, Laurinaitis and Russell led the team in tackles with 8 apiece.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The special units had some issues today. I can handle Pretorious missing a 44 yarder on the road from time to time but having a 32 yard attempt blocked is not acceptable. I know Ray Stinkle would say the laces weren't out, but big time kickers convert in that situation. That said, I'm not overly worried about Pretorious. I'm more concerned about the dismal performance of the longsnappers. Errors like that on special teams lead to losses against better competition. Oh, and so much for Ray Small making an impact. He did manage to take the field and returned one punt for 10 yards. Maybe next week will the breakout performance I've been looking for since spring ball.

NOTES:

Brandon Saine has scored in all 3 games...OSU has scored at least 1 TD in 129 consecutive games...The 68 yard Boeckman to Robo TD was the longest for each in their career...Andy Geiger served as the Honorary Captain.

Nice Guys Do Finish Last

Oden during happier times

By now you've heard the devastating news that Greg Oden's entire rookie season will be spent on the sidelines after having microfracture surgery on his right knee today. After going in for an exploratory procedure, the decision for the season-ending surgery was made, but doctors are encouraged because the area of injury was relatively small.

When I first heard the news, it felt like a family member had died. Not only is Oden one of my favorite athletes, he's one of my favorite people. Vegas Story Guy is already coming with the "I told you so" in another attempt to let Kevin Durant let him hump his leg and ESPN has already dropped the Blazer's home opener.

Oden should be able to return next season - this is the same surgery Amare Stoudemire underwent 2 years ago and he can score a basket or two. Another bit of hope: Oden will become the 2nd player in the NBA draft (since 1996 1986) to be taken #1 and then miss his rookie season. The first guy helped his team to the 2nd greatest single season turnaround in NBA history.

Ohio State Buckeyes #11 Ohio State 2-0, 0-0 Big Ten Roster | Schedule 3:30 PM ET ------ Husky Stadium Seattle, WA Washington Washington 2-0, 0-0 PAC10 Roster | Schedule

Think for a minute about the last time you were genuinely nervous before an Ohio State football game. It's been a while, hasn't it? I know that I haven't been nervous before a game for at least a good year and a half. I was maybe a little nervous heading into the Michigan game last season, but I was pretty sure we'd take that one because it was played at the 'Shoe. I should have been nervous heading into the BCS Championship game -- perhaps the team should have been as well, but this trip to Washington has a lot of Buckeye Nation justifiably worried, myself included.

The margin for error going into this game is as low as it's been for a long time. Do the Buckeyes have an offense that can go out and get points when needed, like last year's squad? How will the young players respond to their first game on the road -- and a West coast roadie at that? The PAC10 is off to a hot start this season and the conference may need a Buckeye win just as much as the faithful. One thing is for certain: this game has the potential to either sink a season or be the springboard towards continued improvement.

Opponent: Tyrone Willingham's Huskies are off to an impressive 2-0 start, having blasted Syracuse 42-12 in their opener and then stopped Boise State and their major college best 14-game winning streak last week. The resurgent program will be looking at the Buckeye game as a chance to put Washington football back on the map.

You really have to be happy for Willingham considering Notre Dame pretty much pissed on him and sent him packing. There seems to be a different set of rules for Crewcut, and yet Ty has handled it all with nothing but class. I want him to do well in Washington. I just need him to lose this game.

Jake LockerSeattle has Locker fever

Willingham has to like his odds considering the Huskies have Tebow 2.0 in redshirt freshman Jake Locker (#10). He's is big (6-3, 225), fast and likes to run having gone over 10 carries and 80 yards in back to back games. His rushing numbers alone are pretty sick: 167 yards (6.4ypc) and 3 TDs. Toss in the 335 and another touchdown through the air and you have a tough guy to defend. Rivals thinks high enough of Locker to have him pegged as the #25th best quarterback in the nation. Hometown bloggers think even higher of Locker, leading them to say things like the Huskies will win by 14.

When Locker isn't running or throwing the ball, he'll look to handoff to Louis Rankin (#9). He popped off to the tune of 147 and 3 TDs against Syracuse, but Youngstown State could probably beat Syracuse this season. Against stiffer competition in the form of Boise State, Rankin was held to 17 for 45 which is just shy of 3 yards per carry.

Several Husky receivers will see balls thrown their way. Locker particularly likes to go to senior Marcel Reece (#3) and why not, he is 6-3/240. The JUCO transfer had 4 catches for 102 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown to put the Huskies up 24-7 last week against Boise State.

Washington's offensive line has only given up one sack on the season, but the team did allow Boise State to block a 41-yard field goal attempt. The Huskies have already shown reverses, the option and a halfback pass and we're only two weeks into the season. Expect there to be a trick or two up Ty's sleeves, which has a chance to work against a fast, aggressive defense like Ohio State's.

As good as the Husky offense has been this season, the defense may be even better. Coordinator Kent Baer, fresh off winning the award that won the award for longest award name, The National Defensive Coordinator Player of the Week, will try to keep everything in front of them without giving up the big play to the Buckeyes. He has a veteran front, fast linebackers and a secondary that collectively notched 7 sacks against Syracuse and picked off Boise State 3 times. Baer's boys kept Ian Johnson out of the endzone and held Boise State to its lowest output in 2 years. They'll be ready.

Although relatively small with a capacity of only 72,000, Husky Stadium can be a tough place to play. Because most of the seats are located between the endzones, the noise amplifies. During a 1992 night game against Nebraska, ESPN measured the crowd noise at 135 decibels. Outside of Camp Randall and Happy Valley, this will be the toughest environment many of these Buckeyes will ever play in.

Notes: Washington is 2-0 for the first time since the Neuheisel era... The line opened with the Huskies as 3.5 point dogs, but has since risen to 4.0 points... Huskies have a blogger shortage.

Buckeye Breakdown: The Buckeyes will be making their 5th trip out to Husky Stadium in a series that Woody started in 1957 as a way to get the team prepared for West coast trips. Like the big one to Pasadena. Although the Buckeyes hold a 7-3 lead in the series, the last two visits to Seattle haven't been kind to them. Washington beat the Buckeyes 25-16 in 1994 and before that drilled Earl's 1986 team 40-7 in the rain. That game and the continued 9-3 seasons ultimately lead to Earl's firing, which begat John Harold Cooper and many years of suffering at the hands of Michigan. Ohio State defeated Washington 28-9 in their last meeting, the Buckeye's 2003 season opener in Columbus.

It's true that the offense didn't show anything whatsoever in the opening two games, what with running the ball on 75% of first downs and forcing the power game when the corner was there and that's fine. The Vest knows what he's doing and if he wants to work on some things, he's got more career victories than I do. This will be the first game that Tressel has actually game-planned for the opponent at hand instead of working through a fairly generic plan.

Robo Pulls Away"I have his pants!"

I'm still high on the play of Todd Boeckman at quarterback, despite the so-so performance last week. One pick he gets back because of the slip and you can bet he's seen enough tape of the safety coming across to snatch the other one that he'll know where the safety is for every play the rest of his career. This will be a good test for Boeckman and unless he starts terribly, expect to see little or none of Bellisari the 2nd. Robo will create openings based on his route-running and the long-awaited appearance of Ray Small should help to take some pressure off of the offensive line by forcing the UW safeties to back up a little. This is important because if the Huskies can add the safety to the mix with their talented front and linebackers, Boeckman could be forced to run. He is supposedly faster than Troy Smith, but I'll believe it when I see it on the field at game-speed.

Fresh off of his first career 100 yard outing, Beanie Wells should have some momentum heading into the matchup. After using questionable technique at times for 7 quarters, he unleashd the the "Mother of All Stiff-Arms" (captured nicely by Keith) and seemed to get it going late against Akron. I believe Tressel will throw to setup the run against Washington. We won't see the team that ran the ball on 75% of its first downs against YSU and Akron. Also expect to see Saine utilized in more and more situations. His speed, whether on kick returns or as part of a two-back backfield with Wells could present some matchup problems for the Washington defense.

James LaurinaitisLiving up to the hype this season

On the defensive side of the ball, Laurinaitis will be tasked with making sure that Locker doesn't go off. If there's ever a game where you like your linebackers to be fast like the Buckeye corps, it's this one. The strength of the front and the speed of the linebackers should bottle Locker up early and force Ty into throwing the ball more than he'd like to or early trickery. I expect for Heacock to let the boys get after it a little and really try to apply pressure to the young quarterback. We've hardly seen this team blitz much, but they will Saturday.

As always, special teams are huge on the road. Early on the Huskies could have success stopping the Buckeye offense. The good news is that the Buckeye defense should enjoy similar success. The punting game must be on so the Bucks can establish an early field position edge.

The Huskies of 2007 provide a real test for these Buckeyes. To win this game, the team must take care of mistakes. If the Buckeyes take care of the ball and limit the penalties, they have too much talent and the defense is too well-suited for Jake Locker's skill-set to lose this one. If they come out and make the same kind of mistkes they made against Youngstown State and Akron, it could easily be ucler-city for Buckeye fans Saturday afternoon.

Notes: Jim Tressel will be going for win #200 against Washington... Ohio State is ranked No. 1 in the nation in total defense, giving up 122.5 yards a game... The 8 points allowed by the Buckeyes are the fewest to start the season since the 1996 squad opened with 70-7 and 72-0 victories... OSU fell from #9 to #10 in the unofficial (but highly accurate) BCS standings this week... Jack Arute will be patrolling the sidelines for ESPN and will check in every 10 minutes to let viewers know how loud it is... The coaches finally selected an offensive lineman POW with fist-year center Jim Cordle winning the honor for the Akron game.

Buckeyes Agree To New Deal With Nike

nike.jpg

The Athletic Department announced the completion of a new 7 year deal with Nike late yesterday. The press release states Nike will remain the the exclusive provider of footwear and apparel for all 36 varsity sports. In total, that amounts to $2.34 million per year and over $16 mil of product over the length of the deal. OSU will also receive over $8 mil for brand exclusivity. The stated total value of the deal is $26.1 mil not including team bonuses or licensing revenues.

Against The Spread - Week 3

rickneuheisel.JPG Cranial reduction surgery anyone?

So much for retiring to open a gambling service. I posted a meager 2-2 result against the spread last week while Jason apparently sought the advice of his lady en route to an impressive 4-0 run to take the season lead (Jason 6-1, Chris 5-2). Hell, I might call her for tips this week after taking Michigan -8 against Oregon.

Since it's Washington week, we've invited Mr. Wonderful's twin, Rick Neuheisel, to be this week's celebrity guest. As you know, the former Washington head coach prefers gambling on March Madness but with a $4.5 million settlement from the NCAA in his pocket he's throwing caution to the wind. How can you not like a guy that beat the NCAA out of millions and has his own drinking game?

Now on to the picks:

USC (-10) @ Nebraska (ABC 8:00) The #14 Huskers are looking to pull the upset to build on a 2-0 start including a 20-17 win at Wake Forest last week. Meanwhile, USC has had a week to prepare for Bill Callahan's squad following their less than impressive 38-10 win over Idaho two weeks ago. On paper, it looks like any chance for a Husker upset will rely on ASU transfer QB Sam Keller having a huge game.

Chris: Carroll v. Callahan is a mismatch regardless of home field. USC 31-16. Jason: There's something about the Trojans when the lights come on. They cover easy 38-20. SlickRick: Who cares about the game? The Song Girls are where it's at! USC 42-17.

Tennessee (+8) @ Florida (CBS 3:30) No need for a game breakdown, EDSBS has you covered with 50 Reasons Florida Rules And Tennessee Just Plain Sucks.

Chris: Again, it comes down to coaching for me. I'll take Meyer over Fullmer in anything but a meatloaf chugging contest. UF 37, UT 24 Jason: Herban still has the hot hand and you know Fulmer doesn't like beating good coaches. Gators 34, Vols 21. SlickRick: The Gators ruled my hoops bracket for two years so I gotta stay with 'em. Gators 38-27.

Arkansas (+3.5) @ Alabama (ESPN 6:45) Alabama will be out to avenge last year's double OT 24-23 loss but they'll have to stop Darren McFadden to do it. Speaking of 'Bama, when was the last time they were actually relevant in college football?

Chris: I have no idea what will happen but I can't stand that job slut Saban so I'll say 23-17 Arkansas. Jason: Bear Saban is still the same guy that was on the verge of getting canned at MSU prior to going 9-2 his final season in East Lansing. Hogs win outright, 28-21. SlickRick: Go easy on SlickNick. He seems like my kinda guy. Alabama 22-20.

Notre Dame (+9.5) @ Michigan (ABC 3:30) There are probably better games to pick from but I just can't resist. Considering UM at least has Mike Hart and Mario Manningham while ND has the worst offense in the country, it could be Lloyd's day to shine. Either way, one of these two will be 0-3 so I'll be smiling.

Chris: Total crapshoot. Michigan 17-6. Jason: Both of the teams suck so bad that I'm pissed that I actually have to think about this pick. Michigan 27, Notre Dame 17. SlickRick: I think I'll skip this one and watch Buckeye Booty instead...

Not-Updated BlogPoll Ballot: Week 2

Since there was much rejoicing and dancing in the streets when we submitted our first pass at our BlogPoll ballot this week, we don't have any changes. There was another round of "Does Hawaii deserve to still be in this thing?" conversations, but they clung to #25.

LSU is still #1 on our ballot, but something magical could be in the works. With the constant and sure to grow louder chatter regarding Les Miles to Michigan, will that have any effect on his talented squad? Will Les be day-dreaming about wearing Bo's old coach shorts when he should be watching film? Something to keep an eye on.

And speaking of film, we had to share this. A father wearing a "World's Greatest Dad" t-shirt absolutely torching his daughter's favorite Michigan hat while she cries in the background. Perfect. And they rip on our mustaches?

The widget on the bottom right should be updated mid-afternoon with the new rankings and as always, you can peep the ballots of every voter.

Buckeye NFLer Of The Week - 1

Carter scores against the RamsAP Photo/Jeff Roberson

It's a new season in the NFL and that means the Buckeye NFLer of the Week award is back. Each week we'll honor a former Buckeye as the top performer in the NFL from the school.

Week one's winner is Drew Carter of the Carolina Panthers. Carter had 3 catches for 19 yards but scored twice as the Panthers upset the St. Louis Rams at home 27-13. It was the first time in Carter's 4 year career that he scored multiple touchdowns in a game.

Honorable mention goes out to Mike Vrabel of the New England Patriots. Vrabel had 7 tackles (6 solo), 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble as the Patriots dismantled the N.Y. Jets at home, 38-14. We were ready to hand over this week's award to Vrabel until the Pats went all KGB on us.
