I will start this off saying I thought we should have come out in a 3 man DL front yesterday with Tyleik at NT with hall and JT on the edges. So for next season let's start with that:
On Defense:
- Run a majority of 3-3-5, but the 5th DB and the 3rd LB are tweeners like styles and kourt williams. Obvious pass rush situations you can sub a normal LB for another pass rushing specialist.
- Reasoning behind this change is odd fronts have less natural gaps in the run game based on alignment alone, it's harder to climb for the OL on combo blocks. The tweeners will have the size speed combo to play hard against the run & be able to cover in space and before the whole "they're too small" Convo starts it's 2022, there are smaller LBs playing traditional LB spots in the league every weekend. You have more flexibility to throw in the blitz without losing the coverage integrity.
- Down side to this is Tyleik either needs to put weight back on and/or they need a couple bigger NT from the portal.
- Teach the DBs to actually play the ball for once tired of "fuck it some WR is out there" 50-50 balls getting completed at like a 90% clip all because the DBs never try to play the ball.
On Offense:
- Give the keys of the Ferrari to Kevin Wilson and let him go. He will at least call a cohesive offensive attack. Hell I bet he had more consistent results from his IU teams than Day has week in and week out with the talent OSU has. I'm guessing he's the big reason the scripted plays walked us downfield on the first drive yesterday.
- Focus on a power run first spread attack instead of air raid, this is the big ten gotta be proficient running in November. Give up on the big play or 3 and out punt offense. Day shits himself when teams don't let him hit the deep ball instead of carving them up underneath, it's happened since Justin Fields was here, and it seems like his only counter is WR screens instead of slants/ rub routes/ drags. How does every other offense have rub routes yet with our holy offensive mind HC we almost NEVER run them.
- Stop forcing Henderson up the middle, stop forcing stretch zone plays that the line can't block even if they can block them the stretch should never be a big part of your run game because your big ass OL aren't moving people off the ball they're worried about moving horizontally, let the line fire off vertically and pound them with Chip & Miyan if they're there. Utilize Henderson & Pryor & Hayden in space if they're all there, those are the guy you throw the swing screens to not the WRs. RB swing screens work because they're running away from slower LBs that are trying to follow with the motion and there's the same number of blockers vs DBs out wide, how Day and his genius staff haven't figured out if you have 2 wr and 2 DBs and throw a WR screen without getting another free blocker out there it doesn't work is beyond me.
- I'm fine not running designed run plays with the QB 20 times a game, but you HAVE to coach if there's 20 yards in front of you take it. Probably the play that pissed me off the most yesterday was watching Stroud jog around on the busted screen play...you stupid fuck linemen are downfield you HAVE to run, so stop loafing and fucking tuck it and run.
Wow I think that turned into more of a rant than anything but it's annoying to watch the same deficiencies all season hoping they're holding back play calling for the game only to realize after the scripted calls were done it was back to status quo.
