Mr.paperhands started a thread about OSU -13.5 but didn't really cover much about to overall week 1 slate. Week 1 is loaded on thursday, friday, and saturday with great games. Here are the most interesting games with the spreads and some basic info.

Thursday

  • Temple @ Rutgers(-14.5)-8pm is a late start for OSU so if you want to sit down and watch some B1G football this should be a decent game to start the evening. Rutgers is returning everybody from a decent(for Rutgers) and entering year 2 under Schiano. Temple's QB is former OSU commit Dwan Mathis. Temple was pretty bad going 1-6 last year but also have a ton of starters back. Is Rutgers really good enough to beat them by more than 2 touchdowns?
  • Boise State @ UCF(-4.5)-Two programs with new head coaches should be near the top of the G5 rankings. Gus Malzahn starts the UCF era against Andy Avalos(former BSU DC.) BSU actually has an air raid system and Malzahn may try to slow down the UCF offense from previous coaches. Really interesting stylistically to see who transitions better.
  • OSU @ Minnesota(+14)-CJ Stroud era begins against a team with 20 starters returning. The stadium should be rocking and Minny has some legit NFL talent on the OL along with a veteran QB in Tanner Morgan.

Friday

  • MSU @ Northwestern(-3)-Northwestern loses everybody from a B1G West championship team and will attempt to make a bowl. MSU should be solid on defense but both offenses are likely to be pretty bad. This should be an ugly low scoring game to lead in saturday
  • North Carolina @ VTech(+5.5)-A very interesting low line. UNC returns Sam Howell but loses a ton of talent and will be traveling to face a team lead by Justin Fuente who is squarely on the hot seat.

Saturday

  • PSU @ Wisconsin(-5.5)-A massive B1G game to start the first saturday off with a bang, this line is moving more and more towards Wisky. Two programs with a lot of talent on defense should be ready for a low scoring affair. Wisconsin was gutted by covid last year and will look to rebound with Graham Mertz while PSU is breaking in a new OC in Mike Yurcich. The winner of this game will be seen as the top competitor to OSU.
  • Indiana @ Iowa(-3.5)-Indiana had a stellar season last year and returns quite a bit of production from that solid team and will be starting the season at what was probably the best team in the west last year. Iowa ended the season a year and should have a great defense and good OL/rushing attack.
  • WVU @ Maryland(+2.5) The Locksley and Tagovialo show return for a second year against WVU who allowed the fewest yards per game last year while also returning abunch of starters. This will be a really good game to determine the depth of the B1G vs Big 12.
  • Alabama vs Miami(+18.5)-Deriq King returns after a gruesome injury and will likely lose badly to Bama. Will be interesting to see Bama's brand new offense after replacing Mac Jones, Najee Harris, Devonte Smith, Alex Leatherwood, Steve Sarkisian and more. This is a huge line for what should be a decent Miami team.
  • Louisiana @ Texas(-8)-The Steve Sarkisian era starts with a potential for an embrassment against a ranked G5 team.  Louisiana beat ISU last year and return most of their team which could spell trouble for a Texas team in transition with a new QB.
  • Georgia vs Clemson(-3)-Likely the biggest non conference game of the year. The winner of the game is a lock for the playoff and the loser will be in some trouble. Can Clemson return to the playoffs despite losing Lawrence, Ettienne, and having a bad OL? Can UGA finally field an offense good enough to match the always stellar defense? This should be an incredible game.
  • LSU @ UCLA(+3.5)-Chip Kellys best team at UCLA will take on LSU at home. They thumped Hawaii last week and could put Coach O(a guy who has covered up multiple rape cases) in some hot water. Will LSU with a new OC and DC be ready to travel to the west coast? Should be a fun game to end the night.
