A product of Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati, Johnson was rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports and had scholarship offers from several Football Bowl Subdivision schools, including Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Ohio and Western Kentucky. Johnson opted to turn down those offers, however, to walk on at Ohio State.
