The 1906 Buckeyes finished the season 8-1 and outscored their opponents 153-14.

BACKGROUND
The Buckeyes entered the game with a 7-1 record and were coming off of a 12-0 win over Wooster. The victory over Wooster made the Buckeyes the “champs” of Ohio. The Buckeyes went 5-0 against Case, Kenyon, Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan and Western Reserve. These schools were known as the “Big Six” in 1906.

Albert Herrnstein went 28-10-1 in four seasons at Ohio State.

COACHES
1906 was Albert Herrnstein's first season as Ohio State's head coach. The largest margin of victory in 1906 was a 52-0 thrashing of Wittenberg. The only loss was to That Team. The Buckeyes played tough, but lost 0-6. Herrnstein coached from 1906-1909 and amassed a 28-10-1 (.731) record. His longest winning streak was 8 and longest losing streak was 2.

Ohio Medical was coached by former Ohio State coach John Eckstorm. As Ohio State's coach from 1899-1901 Eckstorm guided the Buckeyes to a then school record 14 game winning streak. Ohio State went 22-4-3 during Eckstorm's tenure. His .810 winning percentage is fourth best in Ohio State history.

Description of the game by the Columbus Citizen via The Official Ohio State Football Encyclopedia:

For excitement, the game stands out as the strongest ever played at “U” field. Being a local game entirely, the two teams had plenty of sympathizers in the crowd, which numbered in the neighborhood of 6,000. The rooting forces of both schools did splendid work.

State acted like a well-coached team throughout the game, and put up an excellent display of football knowledge and ability. It Desrved to win. The interference shown was the best seen on “U” field this year, and it never failed to carry the runner along for good gains. This was especially true of the quarterback runs in which Barrington distinguished himself until taken out of the line-up with injuries.

One Individual came within a very small margin of defeating the football champions of Ohio Thanksgiving Day. That man was Jack Means, quarterback for The Ohio Medics, who in a splendid battle with Ohio State, kicked two field goals from placement and scored all of the 8 points of his team. One of Means' goals was a grand effort.

Standing 52 yards from the Ohio State goal he booted the pigskin over the bar in the first half.

Ohio State deservedly won the game by piling up 11 points, but the Medic quarter gave the Scarlet and Gray supporters several attacks of heart failure in the second half when four times he shot the pigskin about the bar. He missed them all, but several of the tries fell shy of the coveted mark by the matter of only inches.

Fred Secrist, the Chillicothe lad, who played his second game for the Scarlet and Gray, was one of the sensations of the day. Every time he was given the ball, he made a gain and by his twisting and dashing playing, he was enabled to carry the ball over for both of State's touchdowns. With the winning of the Medic game, Ohio State closes her season the undisputed champion of Ohio.

I can't get enough of the superlatives and imagery that writers of the early 1900s used.

1906 FIRSTS...

  • Ohio State's first season not to allow a touchdown.
  • Harry Carry caught Ohio State's first forward pass. The reception went for a touchdown against Wooster.
  • First time an opponent's coach scouted the Buckeyes.
  • Albert Herrnstein's first season as head coach.
