Ohio State Basketball Mid-90s: How Did Things Get So Awful?

Ohio State's basketball program typically ranks 10th-13th all-time in most polls depending on weighting of things like Final Fours and Conference Titles (strengths for us) vs. National Titles (1). But that standing comes with some tremendous ups and downs from being arguably the best program in the country in the first half of the 60s and having 5 top 7 AP poll finishes 2006-2013 to rarely finishing ranked in the 70s and 80s. Thankfully we've become a top 25 staple again the last couple years and hopefully consistent top 15 finishes are again on the horizon. But looking back, I'm not sure anything was as bleak as the mid-90s.

From 1994-1998 OSU went 4-40 on the road in Big Ten play, losing all 9 road games in 95 and winning just 1 the other four years. Overall, the Bucks went 6-12, 2-16, 3-15, 5-13, and 1-15 in conference play those five straight years. Against teams that finished ranked 1994-1998, Ohio State was a dismal 1-30.

For those old enough to recall, what exactly happened?? How did Ohio State go from back-to-back NCAA number 1 seeds and Big Ten Conference Champions with Jimmy Jackson, Chris Jent, Lawrence Funderburke and company to falling off a cliff and being so dismal for 5 straight years to the point of flirting with going winless in conference play?
