Nirvana's "Nevermind" hit #1 on the Billboard album chart today in 1992. I'm sure we're all aware of the significance of this album so I'll spare you all from my inane pontifications.

What I found interesting in researching this was the make up of the album chart for the week of January 11, 1992. Nirvana knocked Garth Brooks out of the top spot and the rest of the top ten was impressively diverse.

1. Nirvana - Nevermind

2. Garth Brooks - Ropin' the Wind

3. MC Hammer - Too Legit To Quit

4. U2 - Achtung Baby

5. Michael Jackson - Dangerous

6. Boyz II Men -  Cooleyhighharmony

7. Guns n Roses - Use Your Illusion II

8. Guns n Roses - Use Your Illusion I

9. Metallica - Metallica (Black album)

10. Michael Bolton - Time, Love and Tenderness

Yes, Virginia, there was a time when rock music competed well with pop music. The times were, as they always are, a-changin' and after grunge's brief run and the even shorter run of nu-metal, the charts would again be ruled by the likes of Britney, Mariah and Justin.

Someone let me know when you get that time machine working.
