Motley Crue started a two week run at #1 with the album “Dr. Feelgood” today in 1989. One of the last huge records of the hair metal era, “Dr. Feelgood” benefitted from the production skill that Bob Rock brought to the studio. Featuring hits like “Kickstart My Heart” and “Dr. Feelgood”, the album sold more than six million copies in the United States alone. Multiple well-known rockers contributed backing vocals to the album, including Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, Jack Blades from Night Ranger, Bryan Adams, and Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander from Cheap Trick.

You can thank (or blame) the success of this album for uniting Bob Rock and Metallica on Metallica’s 1991 “Black” album. Figuring out why Metallica would turn to Bob Rock is easy if you listen to “Dr. Feelgood” right after listening to any of The Crue’s other albums. Rock was able to achieve a much fuller, dynamic sound with “Dr. Feelgood” . He was able to retain a sense of heaviness while injecting the music with a pop sensibility that would appeal to the masses in ways that previous Crue records did not – virtually the exact same thing he did with Metallica.

“Dr. Feelgood” was the apex of Motley Crue as a band. The clouds of the impending grunge storm were gathering and The Crue was unable to remain whole. Singer Vince Neil would leave the band and be replaced by John Corabi. Neil would return but nothing was ever the same again.

Here is track #9 from “Dr. Feelgood”:
