According to records obtained by USA Today, in 2014 Stanford University nearly doubled head football coach David Shaw's salary to over $4 million, a huge increase from the previous year. This is of particular interest because it also throws into sharp relief then-coach Jim Harbaugh's compensation.

Shaw’s total for the 2014 calendar year —  4,067,219 — is close to double the amount reported for him for 2013 (just over $2.2 million). It’s almost four times the amount listed as Jim Harbaugh’s total for 2010, the figure included on the return Stanford filed in 2012.

Many private schools don't often reveal this much about their finances when it comes to coach salaries, but given that Baylor was paying Art Briles over $6 million, maybe there's a reason for that.
