Report: Michael Drake to be Named Ohio State's Next President

By Kyle Rowland on January 29, 2014 at 7:31p
UC-Irvine's Chancellor (for now) Michael Irvine

Ohio State's student newspaper, The Lantern, is reporting Ohio State will name a president by the end of the week — and it will be current UC-Irvine Chancellor Michael Drake, MD. Neither Ohio State nor UC-Irvine would confirm the report.

Eleven Warriors has confirmed with a source that Drake will be Ohio State's next president.

The Ohio State Board of Trustees will have a closed door meeting Thursday, followed by a public session. The meeting was originally scheduled for Friday before being moved Wednesday afternoon.

Drake has been the chancellor at UC-Irvine since 2005. Prior to that, he served as vice president for health affairs for the University of California system for five years. He's an alum of both Stanford and UC-San Francisco. His medical background will be crucial in his stewardship of Ohio State's budding James Cancer Medical Center.

Drake will be the 15th president at Ohio State. He replaces interim president Joseph Alutto, and ultimately, E. Gordon Gee. And Drake is no stranger to bow-ties.

My first thought was that UC-Irvine is kind of small potatoes academically, but apparently it's a much better school than I realized. So I guess that part is good.
Best of luck!

Karen Holbrook part 2. So we're bringing up the AAA coach from the minors. Isn't Ohio State the largest school in America from a student and budget standpoint and we bring in someone who's never been in charge of a university of any size.

cdubs's picture

From the Dispatch:

Although Irvine enrolls about half the number of students as OSU, it has established itself as a prominent research university. It is ranked the No. 14 public university in the country, according to the U.S. News and World Report rankings, ahead of Ohio State, which ranks No. 16.

I don't think Carolina was questioning UC Irvine's academic chops.  By saying "bringing up...from the minors" and "we bring in someone who's never been in charge of a university of any size" Carolina meant (I think) to imply that Drake isn't a current sitting president at a University and that OSU should be able to poach a top dog from another research institution.
However, I don't think Carolina realizes that the "Chancellor" position is the University head at UC Irvine.  Each UC campus has a chancellor, and Janet Napolitano is President of the entire UC system.  The Chancellor is the top administrative office at UC Irvine, so it's wrong to say Drake was "never in charge."

Welcome and Congrats. A word of advice to this west coaster, if someone says "O-H" you better reply with a hearty "I-O"

Unlike Gee, though, Dr. Drake also apparently plays guitar

As long as Dr. Drake realizes the most important thing to focus on is football academics we'll be fine.

Not sure about this guy?  Check out his offer to hire, then not hire, then hire Chemerinsky.......interesting!  Also, he comes from that great pipeline that is just happy to "win @ life."  We shall see.....

I live about 5 miles from UC Irvine and am not impressed with this hire.  Of course, I would not be impressed with anyone from the UC System.  Disaster.

I agree.
Outside of UCLA and Berkeley, the UC system is rather pedestrian.
I think Ohio State could have gotten a "bigger fish," but will wait to see how well Drake does before passing judgment.

Compared to what? We're talking about a University system with multiple campuses that are more highly regarded than the flagship schools in most states.
UCI is arguably the #6 school in the system & it is ahead of Ohio State in most ranking services.
By what definition is that pedestrian?

Michael's picture

San Diego is good, but Irvine, Santa Barbara and Davis are all very much run-of-the-mill.
Santa Cruz, Riverside and Merced are all sub-par. When I graduated from HS (2005), Riverside was guaranteeing admission to anyone with decent grades/test scores and Merced was taking anyone with a degree.

Uh, yeah, um, NO. Don't get me wrong, the UC system has major issues, but pedestrian it is not.

WTF OSU!? Goddamn going down hill everything.  I guess having Gee set the bar too high to find a good fucking candidate for the job.  I am furious. His gdmnd friggin background got him this job.  No more Alum money from me til hes gone.

Looks like a good hire, hopefully he has a better understanding of what makes OSU great, like quality faculty and staff, a perspective that has been buried under a layer of out-source first ask questions later by the current leadership.

Man I hope he's not another Dr. Holbrook.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

Jpfbuck's picture

Welcome aboard Dr Drake,
however, he has been a bit of a controversial figure at Irvine though.
He fired and then immediately rehired the dean of the law school in 2007, he criticized muslim students for protesting an appearance by an Israeli govt official and then sanctioned the Muslim student group and has alienated alot of faculty out there

hit_the_couch's picture

"Three years later, Drake waded into fierce tensions between Israeli and Palestinian students on campus when he strongly condemned the actions of 11 students who disrupted a campus speech by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren."
Not to get into a debate about what happened, but they did disrupt the speech by a campus guest. If people want to protest something, that is fine, but don't interrupt or screw something up for others. It's not like they were 'peaceable assembling.'

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!
