Report: Mack Brown Resigns at Texas

Mack Brown to resign from Texas.
According to the Longhorn Network, Mack Brown will resign as Texas head coach after Texas's bowl game against Oregon. This news comes as a surprise after reports surfaced that Brown would remain the Texas coach for one more season.

Who didn't see this one coming? The Longhorns will now be in the market for a head coach, but you can almost rule out Nick Saban after he signed an extension with Alabama, last night.

Saban to Texas lives!

I think if they really want to lock up Texas as their own fertile recruiting grounds they need to stop the momentum of either Baylor of Texas A&M. If I am Texas, I go after Briles first, Sumlin (forget his extension) second.

That did escalate quickly...and down goes Brown...

I'm so confused... Mack leaving, Saban coming, Mack staying, Saban staying, Mack leaving... when will it ever end?

What is this? A center for ants?!? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read if they can't even fit inside the building?

they have to throw a ton of money at briles and hope it sticks

PittBuckeye's picture

Doubt he's their first choice, wouldn't be mine anyway.

Nick's picture

I don't think Saban's extension rules him out, but I would assume they would want someone younger than him.

PittBuckeye's picture

There are very few schools who I don't think would offer the biggest contract they could afford to Saban if they thought he mite take it.
They get Saban they get every recruit in Texas that they want (except Meech he's coming home). And they're a top 5 team within 2 years.

Nick's picture

They already have their pick of the Texas players. Gary Patterson would be a good pickup and he would cost a lot less than Saban.

onetwentyeight's picture

They've had fierce competition in the last couple years as the program declined and kids decided they'd rather score tons of points for cool-sunglasses-visor-wearing-Bro Sumlim and Johnny Footbawl rather than suffer through embarrassing losses with Grampa Mack and a disgruntled fanbase.

Since Muschamp was previously the Coach-In-Waiting and he is currently coaching at the Dumpster Fire that is Florida, what's the likelihood that he'll be considered?

JozyMozy's picture

well, uh...bare cupboard aside, he's been way, way less than impressive.

Schadenfreude lives! Laughing my ass off! If Mack Brown planned it this way for maximum effect (and to keep Saban out of Texas) he couldn't have done it better. The only thing that would make it more fun to watch is if a pissed off Mack Brown takes a job in the Big 12 at another school.

A lot of experts seem to be speculating on Jimbo Fisher. I think David Shaw would be great for the job.

David Shaw = class act.
Probably my favorite coach outside of Urban.

I would be curious to see how he did outside of Stanford.

Here, here. I'm a huge David Shaw fan.

@Bass - I understand that. I was making a joke. I didn't think that the sarcasm font was appropriate, but I should have used it anyway.  As sometimes happens, nuance is lost on the internet. My apologies!

No problem! You got no DV from me (yeah, that was a little weird that you got a DV for what I thought was a pretty funny post). Btw, I enjoy your comments here - you've been spot on with some of your observations.

THE DREAM IS STILL ALIVE PEOPLE.

Saban has no buy-out clause in his Bama contract. Meaning he could leave at anytime, since we have this thing in Murrica called the 13th Amendment that prevents forced labor. Aka if your contract has no buyout (or restrictive covenant, but that's not relevant here) you can leave at anytime and all they can do is ... stop paying you. I so desperately want to knock Bama fans off their high horse. Their rage-filled tears would taste very, very sweet.

According to reports, Mack Brown stepped aside so as to not further divide the fan base.  I've always liked Mack Brown and believe he is one of the classiest people coaching college football.
UT should be able to get a hired gun to ignite some passion and energy back into the program. With their money and recruiting base, UT could very well be back at a high level within a couple of years.  Go Bucks!

I wish the USC job was still vacant... How crazy would that be: MACK BROWN TO USC!!

Just... Go Bucks.

I haven't heard/read anyone suggest this, but assuming no Saban and no Urban... what about BOb?  Seems to me that would make a lot of sense. He leaves State Penn for an opportunity to play in a few bowl games/win a few championships before inevitably taking over in New England.
Just seems a more plausible option than Saban/Meyer, etc...

I think if he leaves PSU it's for the NFL.

What about Mike Leach? An old Big 12 coach who was at a rival school of Texas. It would be a big middle finger to Texas Tech.
