Kendall Sheffield Has Partially Torn Pectoral Muscle But Will Not Need Surgery, Per Report

Former Ohio State cornerback Kendall Sheffield has a partially torn pectoral muscle but will not need surgery after suffering that injury while participating in the bench press at the NFL Scouting Combine on Sunday, he told NFL Network's Kimberly Jones on Monday.

Sheffield was unable to participate in Monday's on-field workouts for defensive backs due to his injury, which deprived him of the opportunity to prove he was one of the 2019 NFL draft's fastest players. According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, Sheffield had been clocked in the high 4.2-second range in the 40-yard dash in combine training; only one player at this year's combine, Mississippi safety Zedrick Woods, ran the 40 in faster than 4.3 seconds (4.29, while Auburn cornerback Jamel Dean, a former Ohio State signee, also ran a 4.30-second 40 on Monday morning).

Even though he was unable to participate in workouts, Sheffield was in attendance (after going through medical testing) at Lucas Oil Stadium to watch the other cornerbacks go through their drills on Monday morning.

Ohio State will hold its pro day for NFL draft prospects on March 20, but it's unclear what the timetable for Sheffield's recovery will be. Former Ohio State center Billy Price was unable to participate in pro day after also suffering a pectoral tear in the bench press at last year's NFL Scouting Combine, but Price's injury did require surgery.
