Select '17 Tracker: Bishop Gorman Captures Eighth-Consecutive State Title While St. John Bosco Gets Revenge on Mater Dei

Before descending upon Columbus, the members of Select '17 have one final shot at glory under the Friday night lights.

GREATEST EVER?

Bishop Gorman called a timeout one play into the second half of Saturday's Nevada 4A state championship game. With the outcome already decided and the Gaels ahead by 48 points, head coach Kenny Sanchez wanted to give senior quarterback Tate Martell a curtain call.

The four-star Ohio State commit scored five times in Bishop Gorman's 84-8 blowout victory at UNLV's Sam Boyd Stadium, leading the Gaels to their eighth-consecutive state title and capping his high school career 43-0 as a starter.

“I don't think there's a doubt that he's the greatest high school football player in Nevada history based off of his accomplishments and what he's done,” Sanchez told USA TODAY Sports. “I think the people who came out to watch him play at any point in time got to see something that was unbelievable.”

Martell finished his senior season with 2,365 yards and 41 touchdowns through the air and 1,253 yards and 21 scores on the ground. More impressively, he threw only one interception all year.

Bishop Gorman will likely capture its third-straight mythical national championship with the win, having knocked off six nationally ranked opponents this season. De La Salle (CA) is the only other team to achieve such a feat, winning four in a row from 2000-2003.

SNOW PLOW ON ITS WAY

St. John Bosco squandered a seven point lead to Mater Dei (CA) earlier this season, and was determined to not let it happen again during Saturday's rematch in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division I championship game.

Running behind an offensive line that averages more than 300 pounds and is anchored by Ohio State offensive tackle commit Wyatt Davis, the Braves rushed for nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns to rout the Monarchs, 42-21.

“Our line and blocking won this game for us,” Bosco quarterback Re-al Mitchell told Fox Sports 1 after the game. “We worked our tail off to prepare for this game. All that work paid off.”

The Braves dominated time of possession (32:21 to 15:39) and rushing yards (382-102). They also forced three turnovers that turned into 14 points.

Bosco will now have two weeks to prepare for the CIF Open Division Bowl Game against De La Salle on Dec. 17 at Sacramento State University. The teams last met in 2013, when the Braves ended the Spartans' run of four-consecutive state titles with a 20-14 victory.

STILL TIME TO WORK ON HIS FORM

Just one day after he committed to Ohio State, Kennedale, Texas, five-star linebacker Baron Browning returned an interception for a touchdown and flashed an “O-H” to the crowd.

Though the play was negated by a clipping penalty, Kennedale went on to win 34-28 at The Star in Frisco — also known as the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility.

The Wildcats, who moved to 11-3 on the season, will play Abilene Wylie in the state semifinals next Friday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
