Baldwin is a good QB. He had no interest in sitting behind Fields and watching all the hype for two years only to have Miller come in as the next guy. Baldwin is gonna do great things at TCU. Hated to see him go, but happy for him to get to play.
Except that the Baldwins used an attorney every step of the way on this one. So, your logic is only slightly flawed.
Exactly and that's why the QB room blew up. It was a risk Day was willing to take. I'm hoping this is Coach speak and doesn't mean the risk was maybe not as smart as he thought it was.
You don't remember correctly. Baldwin had a lawyer. And, someone should ask Day and Kume if Ohio State helped. I'd love to know how that process played out.
Piss off? No one "let" Baldwin leave. And no one "helped out". Please, I love the Buckeyes, but let's stop making them the heroes in this. They helped Blue out (and Tate too) because they didn't have a spot for them and weren't going to play them. Baldwin left for whatever reason, OSU didn't want it to happen, and they have not been any different than the Team Up North on that one.
Maybe someone should ask Coach Day and Justin Kume how much they helped. The answer: NONE.
He didn't get beat out. Did you watch the spring game??? Fields isn't better. Fields got only 1st team reps, Baldwin got second and some first. Reporters even asked that question after every single practice. "How is it a battle if Fields is taking first team reps only?" Baldwin didn't get beat out. There never was a competition. I think Baldwin called Bullshit and decided to take his game somewhere else. And, now, I sure hope Fields is everything the staff dreamed he would be.
Baldwin would have stayed if Martell won the job. Starting is not the issue. I guarantee it. This kid is not that big of an ego. He knows how to wait and be patient. This was about something else.
Wrong. You have no idea what you're talking about. Baldwin never expected to be the starter as a RS Freshman. He just doesn't like the bullshit circus and he's homesick. Don't claim it's a battle when it's not. Fields was brought in as the starter and Baldwin's smarter than the coaches think. The battle never existed and there was never a question. Now, we gotta hope he's a LOT better than he was in the Spring Game.
Classy. And, Baldwin is different than every other transfer out there, including the anointed one -- Fields. I'm as mad and disappointed as the next guy. Was looking forward to cheering on my Texas guy this year. But, be real. Day never treated this like a real competition. Court-side seats. Every pre-spring practice promo featured Fields. Fields never went with the twos at the Spring Game. Maybe Baldwin wasn't interested in playing that game. Honesty means a lot to kids. Maybe it's being homesick. Maybe it's something we don't even know about, but Day took a gamble and got his guy. Let's hope Fields improves A LOT and stays healthy.
We sure do have a lot of excuses lined up for Fields with regard to his performance on Saturday, but Baldwin, well, he's just not that good??? Please, they were both out there for the first time. Baldwin hasn't played a game in 18 months, only taking mental reps. Fields had mop up duty for Georgia's entire season and has already had one entire Georgia Spring practice last year. Baldwin threw it better than Fields and extended plays with his legs. What's the hold up for this generational talent? Sure Fields will be the starter. That's why he's here. Keep hyping him. But, I promise you. He's not the better QB.
Please, you are looking to fill your narrative too. No one is hating on Fields, but Baldwin scored with the 2s and the 1s. While Fields was going against the 1s defense and that's your excuse, Baldwin was throwing to 2s offense. Can that be an excuse? How about just saying they both struggled a bit and need to progress. Baldwin's second half looked like the Texas Baldwin I know. Looked good to me.
It's not a competition. Fields never moved to the second team. Baldwin went back and forth just to make it look like a competition. In my opinion, Baldwin is better, but the pretend battle is just that. Day's mind is made up.
Agree. 11W has been madly in love since January. Too bad because they haven't been able to give complete coverage. I think LR has done a better job of that on the QB stuff.
Absolutely not. I'm not saying it was wrong or right, but that was the gamble Day took. And, by the way, recruiting over QBs with a transfer is different than grabbing the best high school QB every year. Again, not saying it is wrong or right. Day surely examined all of the pros and cons with this transfer. In the end, he felt it was worth it and it'll probably be a good one for OSU. But this gamble included likely losing three pretty decent QBs.
I honestly don't know, but I think Baldwin might grow tired of being patient, especially after watching other guys who waited around for their turn get recruited over. Not saying it wasn't the right thing for the Buckeyes to do, but it has to be something Baldwin thinks about. Is it worth it to wait? Hopefully, he decides it is.
I'm thinking he believes Fields will go pro after one year, which he cannot do. Baldwin would be expected to sit for two. Not happening.
You people with all the facts about Baldwin's high school career are funny. I'm a Texas high school football fan and have followed these LT guys. Baldwin played 16 games his senior year. Texas state championships take as long as an NFL season. He played until the first play of the state championship game. As a junior, he played the second half of about every single game of the 16 game path to the state championship, because the LT team that year was crazy amazing.
"Early in his senior year?" Dude played up until December 22nd in the State Championship game when he fell on the first play. I'd say he played most of his senior year, playing Class 6A, Division 1 ball in Texas.
Completely agree, but I think Day gambled and went for Fields. Fields will be great, but the gamble lost him Martell, Matthis and, I believe, ultimately Baldwin. Day has shown that he will have absolutely no loyalty to anyone. That's fine. It may win championships, but kids are NOT going to stick around and wait their turn. There's no such thing in today's transfer happy world.
Yeah, I'd have to disagree with the maturity comment too. Fields is talented, but the "good as fuck" comment wasn't too impressive. Baldwin has shown nothing but maturity throughout this entire process. He's a smart, talented kid. He'll be a starter somewhere, I'm sure.
Fields is the starter. Has been since the day he committed. This game by Day of calling it a "QB battle" is just that. A game. Keeps everyone interested, talking about it. Gives the press a story line. My bet is Baldwin understands that. Good news is Fields is gonna be a great QB for the Buckeyes and Baldwin has shown himself to be a damn good QB as well. Question is what will Baldwin do after Spring ball.
Be careful there, CowCat, you're talking about a 5* versus a 4* and that's really all that matters, according to so many on here. But, if you know absolutely nothing, I guess that's something to rely on. I know Baldwin's good. Fields too. Let them compete. Baldwin will show how good he is.
I'm a big believer in Baldwin; so, I'll just say before you start getting snarky about him, get your facts straight. Colorado State was where he was committed the summer before his senior season. After throwing more than 4,000 yards and 44 TDs his senior year, he had offers from OSU, Kentucky, North Carolina, Minnesota and Iowa and a ton of Ivy League schools, I think, because he's super smart. But, who's paying attention. And, the kid we offered at the last minute might have been off the radar because of his starting only his senior year, but HC Ryan Day is the one that found him. You're the kinda guy that would be piping in about the 5* Offensive Lineman that didn't actually exist. Because someone told you to be excited about him by putting some shiny stars after his name.
Yes but the hype train is going fast. No time to slow down and actually watch my Texas guy throw the ball.
