Last time we did this on this site I picked 3 games. I break rules in sports talk. Archie’s last game against UCLA in the Rose Bowl my answer if there are few ripples in still water. That would give Archie & Woody a NC with his 2nd Heisman, another Rose Bowl win, bookended the great OHIO STATE run from 1968-75, maybe given Woody a softer landing ( read- A SHOT AT A ROSE, TO THE BITE OF A GATOR by author Todd W. Skipton ). The one ripple we would want is Woody not swinging @ Charlie, the theory that Archie not winning a NC crushed the old man.
I guess the only real answer is the 2019 Clemson game to make sure of no change in fate as the Buckeyes become the most consistent program in college football during the last 70 years. The winningest program of all time too. This way Ohio State gets Woody, Bruce, Cooper, Tressel, Fickell, Meyer, and now Ryan Day. Don’t mess with history. If the no ripple thing ( LOL ) could exist I think I have to choose the 96 mich game. Losing at home after the 93&95 debacles (my years @OSU), ouch!
Another one is the Sparty game in 1998. In the stadium for both disappointments. 2002 & 14 have soothed the pain a bunch. I agree the LSU title game would have been a nice rebound from the Florida loss and prevented the SEC/Ohio State narrative nonsense. Good grief, I could go on and on. A NC in 2015 would have been nice. I consider the blocked punt TD win by MSU @ mich as one of the happiest days of my life. Worth every bit as much as a NC to this fan. Don’t tell me it cost the bucks a playoff spot, nobody could say so much that day. Also, beat Sparty at home and control your own destiny. Truly, if I could I would hang a banner in the WOODY for the MSU punt block/2015 season as the equivalent to a natty. Deal with that!
I’m still going. Maybe the answer is coach T not opening and reading an email. What if there isn’t the 2006/2007 title losses and the SEC narrative doesn’t exist. Therefore, less hatred toward Ohio State and tattoo shenanigans are not so scandalous. I would have been delighted if Jimmy kept coaching, probably wins a 3rd title or more. Jim Tressel was the best in the business. I once said I thought his reputation would ultimately be restored and he’d be more of a martyr for the unpaid college athlete. Isn’t it remarkable how change is made. I feel like the penn State scandal and the LSU/Bama rematch sort of forced a distraction for the sport and gave us the playoff format sooner than later. I’ll end with saying I think maybe the answer is the 2002 South Carolina bowl loss. Buckeyes were hosed by the refs on the Doss INT at the end. What a phenomenal comeback effort which showed me Tressel’s team had great potential. 2002 turned out okay. Oh, maybe the answer is just change the outcome of the Miami NC name to 17-14 Final. No overtime after the Gamble first down. Game Over.
