I've been saying for awhile that Matta needs to go and more to the point, here is why. All of the really great recruits were brought in by the terrific stable of assistants Thad has had over the years, they're all gone now and we can clearly see the drop in talent. Also, with very few exceptions he cannot coach up players, Evan Turner might be his only one. Name me one player on this team that looks better this year than they did last year? He's a good guy but he has to go if we're ever going to be considered anything more that a football school.
Thank God we only have roughly 40 weeks or so til football season is here again. I'm going to start my "let's fire Thad Matta" campaign right now after watching this collection of stiffs sleepwalk through another game. I thought last years team was horrible but from what I've seen, this years version might be even worse considering all of these guys were starting last year with the exception of Potter. Trevor Thompson declaring for the draft last year was laughable, I can see why we're starting a freshman. No fire, no hustle, no defense, no rebounding, always lose 50-50 balls, and just pathetic free throw shooting year after year. Thad Matta is a good guy but we will NEVER win a National Title with him as our head coach. He has to go and tomorrow isn't soon enough for me.
It's my belief that all of our offensive problems start and end with Ed Warriner and Tim Beck, period. Over the past two years our QB's have both regressed and our play calling is simply atrocious. As stated above we never run a screen pass or draw play against a blitz, we run no mis-direction, never throw on 1st down unless we're losing, we are just too predictable and unfortunately I don't see that changing until Urban changes coaches. The other real concern that I have is with our receivers, other than Samuel there is no separation making it really hard for Barrett to find open guys to throw to. And while Baugh is a good receiver, he is a horrible blocker and most times runs poor routes. One of our best plays is having both Samuel and Weber in the backfield at the same time which puts a lot of pressure on the defense. We ran it once against PSU and it went for a 74 yard TD. Never came back to that play again, WTF????
I've not read every comment on here, but a lot of what I have read wants to down play this loss and give way to much credit to PSU. So here is my two cents worth. Ed Warriner and Tim Beck are not Tom Herman, never have been, never will be. Our offense looks horrible and I'm laying 100% of the blame at their feet. Look, we are Ohio State, meaning we are going to get everyone's best shot, doesn't matter that they're a good team, average, or poor, they will bring their absolute best when they play us. I've always said I can live with a loss as long as we have fired all of the bullets in our gun. That certainly didn't happen Saturday night nor did it happen last year against MSU, this is on Warriner and Beck. Two years ago JT set records that might never be broken and Cardale won three games and led us to a National Championship. Last year both QB's regressed and JT does not look as good this year as he did in 2014, why?? Again I blame Warriner and Beck and until that changes we are in for more losses maybe even against teams nowhere near as talented as we are. Warriner might be a great offensive line coach but he is a lousy OC, and Tim Beck was a lousy QB coach at Nebraska and that's why they got rid of him. Until this changes things are unlikely to improve, period.
The real problem is Warriner and Beck and I have been saying this for the past two years, they aren't Tom Herman, never have been, never will be. Until they are replaced we will continually look like we have the past few weeks, unprepared and inept. Our play calling is just plain pathetic and I really have no faith that's it's about to change anytime soon. I have not seen a replay on the game from last night but until we got behind I don't remember many first down throws. They were blitzing on almost every play and we never ran a single screen play, or quick slant to the blitz side, or even a QB draw. Result was six sacks and even when he wasn't being sacked he was under duress and PSU isn't even a great defense!!!! Another real problem is the plain and simple fact except for Samuel no receiver is getting separation for Barrett to throw to. This has been a huge problem most of the year and doesn't seem to be getting any better. One of our best plays is lining up both Weber and Samuel is the backfield together, it went for a TD last night and we never went back to that play. Most of the game when we're on offense just has me shaking my head in disbelief. We control our own destiny, but it's in very shaky hands with Warriner and Beck in the booth calling plays.
I do agree with what's written, plenty of blame to go around. JT wasn't on his game for sure, but our play calling left much to be desired, and that really worries me going forward. I don't see what I saw earlier, no mis-direction, no multiple sets in the backfield, little use of the tight end, and 26 carries by our QB worries me the most. The offensive line didn't do a good job and Baugh was non existent in the blocking game. The wide outs for the most part didn't get separation and by my count there were three drops one leading to the interception. Most of this can be fixed but I'm still very concerned about the plays being called by Warriner and Beck, they haven't yet convinced me they can replace Herman!!!!
Officiating in this game was absolutely horrible, those officials should be ashamed to collect a paycheck. There we're at least 5 calls that they totally blew on both sides of the ball!!! Hopefully the Big 10 sends this crew packing back to Pee Wee football where they belong.
Here are my observations from being at the game. Referees were absolutely HORRIBLE and should be ashamed to collect a paycheck. The exact same thing can be said about Warriner and Beck, they called a miserable game. No imagination, no mis-direction, no short to inter-mediate passes, and running our QB 26 times is a recipe for disaster!!!! Our offensive line got manhandled by 4 down linemen, they didn't even have to blitz to get pressure. Our wide outs did a poor job of getting separation and dropped at least three passes as far as I can remember. Curtis only getting nine touches is just plain stupid, Warriner and Beck strike again. And JT really was off his game today, but again a lot of the blame needs to be laid at the feet of our OC's.
The biggest problem we had last year with our offense was the abscence of Tom Herman. Both QB's took major steps backwards under Tim Beck and if this doesn't improve this year we will be in for a long season. Everyone agrees that JT has to have a year like he did in 2014, but I believe this has more to do with Beck and Warriner than it does with Barrett. Only time will tell if our offense can look like the one from 2014, however, if it doesn't, it's my opinion that blame isn't on JT's back.
One thing I think most people are overlooking is the great assistants Matta has had throughout his career that are now head coaches elsewhere. I truly believe that a lot of his past success has to do with his assistants and not Thad, especially when it comes to developing talent. There is a very good chance that all of these defections aren't so much about playing time as it is their belief that they aren't being coached up to improve. There was little to no improvement from this team from game one through the end of the season. We are all aware of last years senior class that showed very little improvement over their 4 years at OSU. This all has to be laid at Matta's feet and I truly believe that next years team won't be anymore impressive than this years, meaning we'll all be here next April talking about the same concerns. And while I'm on my soap box, why can't this program be a basketball powerhouse too, an elite program. Matta is paid over 5 million a year and there isn't another program in the country that has more resources available to them than those here at Ohio State? I think not! What's missing is an elite coach, it's not Thad Matta, period.
I have been saying this for the last few seasons, but Thad Matta has to go. This program is in serious decline, the writing is on the wall but everyone wants to point to next year as the year we see great results. You're delusional if you think that. Thad's best years were in part due to an excellent staff, most of which are head coaches at big programs. With the exception of Evan Turner, I don't see Thad producing any NBA talent (please don't insult me by including kids that were NBA ready the day they set foot on campus, Oden, Sullinger, Connolly). His team last season had four seniors, three of which, were McDonalds All Americans, did anyone see much growth last season, I certainly didn't. And this years team is a collection of stiffs unlike anything I've ever seen in a Buckeyes uniform. Thompson, Lyle, Loving, Diop make it painful to watch their play. There is NO passion, NO fire, NO intensity with these guys, they're pathetic. Giddens, Williams, Tate all play with energy but there isn't a whole lot of talent there. We'll see how they develop next season but I'm not very optimistic with Matta and his staff. I'm convinced OSU will never win a National title or be a BB power until we get rid of Matta and his entire staff. Basketball will continue to be the filler between football seasons, and that's just sad!!!!
That was the biggest collection of pathetic stiffs I have ever seen playing basketball in OSU uniforms, and I have been watching the Buckeyes for 60 years. Thad Matta needs to go because what you see on the floor begins and ends with him. There is no passion, no fire, no enthusiasm with this team save one or two guys, problem is those guys aren't the most talented kids on the team. There is absolutely no development on this team, other than they did get somewhat better at free throws. Stupid fouls, dumb turnovers, no hustle on defense, I could go on and on, but what's the point. Matta has a history of not developing talent, with few exceptions and it's only getting worse. His teams have been getting worse over the last 5 years and if anyone is expecting big things from this team with Matta and his coaching staff will be sorely disappointed next season. Simply put, we will NEVER contend for a National title with him and this program will NEVER become an elite program under his leadership. It's time for Smith to find an Urban Meyer to lead this program, someone who will recruit, develop, and coach winners. Because if Thompson, Lyle, Loving, and Diop are what we're counting on to bring us a title next year, we are in deep shit.
I'll be shocked if this team comes to play tomorrow night. One of my biggest complaints about this team all year has been their passion and fire on the floor. And their most passionate starter is out with an injury. I fully expect this season to end tomorrow, and with this coaching staff, I'm not expecting a whole lot next year either.
Thad Matta needs to go, I've been saying this for a couple of years now, nobody seems to listen. He's a nice guy, runs a clean program, but he just cannot develop players the way Izzo does at MSU or the way Ryan did at Wisky. Just look back to last season and the four seniors on that team. Three of them were McDonalds All Americans and were just horrible after four years of Thads' coaching. Look at Loving right now, he's a junior playing worse now than he did as a freshman. His teams are year in and year out terrible free throw shooters, last in the league last time I looked. They cannot finish at the rim, commit way too many stupid fouls, and even worse turn overs. But maybe the most galling aspect of our play is that there is absolutely no passion on the floor, other than Tate!! Everything I'm talking about falls on Matta's shoulders and we're paying him 5 million a year for mediocrity, when will this end? We've all heard this before but it is all too true, the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again expecting different results. Please end the insanity, and fire Thad Matta!!!!
I'm all for benching Loving until his attitude and play change. One of my biggest complaints of Matta is the fact that with few exceptions he does not develop players, period. Last years four seniors are a testament to this and Loving seems to be the next installment of what I've seen from him over the years. He played better as a freshman, right now he forces either an ill advised drive or a quick three and he certainly isn't a lock down defender so why is he starting and why is he being rewarded with so much playing time? Thad Matta is a good guy, and he has brought life back into our program, but I fear we are headed for more mediocrity than any runs at championships.
Listen, as a fan for over 60 years, I am certainly entitled to my opinion, and just because I see things differently doesn't make me stupid, ignorant, or I'll informed. I stand by what I said and I hope to God that I am proven wrong. I will be ecstatic should we win a national title under coach Matta, I just believe that we don't have any chance of that happening unless he has another recruiting class like the class that lost to Florida. I do see some potential with this team, time will tell if it lives up to those expectations, but again, I have serious doubts. Free throw shooting would be at the very top of that list, but an inability for anyone, including our centers, to finish at the rim would be a very close second. Stupid fouls and even dumber turnovers would be a third concern, and last but not least, with few exceptions on this team, I just don't see any intensity every night. I saw it against Kentucky but that the only big game where I saw 40 minutes of fight from this team, this comes straight from the head coach, period.
Where do I begin? Let's start with Thad Matta is a good guy and passable coach, but OSU will NEVER win a national title with him as head coach. Let's take a closer look at all of those 20 win seasons. Play 13-15 cupcakes every year(like Malone, Walsh, and many other schools I never heard of), win your home games in the conference, and beat the bottom feeders in the conference and you easily have 20 wins. Big deal!!!! Play a non conference schedule like MSU does with Izzo and you still win 20, then I'll be impressed. Second, Thad Matta does not develop talent, period. The teams that went to the final four had talent that was NBA ready when they set foot on campus. With few exceptions, seniors don't play much better than they did as freshman(last years 4 seniors were the perfect example of that, and 3 of them were McDonalds All Americans coming into the program). As much as I hate Bo Ryan at Wisconsin, he won with less heralded players that he developed over their 4 years in his program. And maybe my biggest complaint of Matta's teams is their inability to shoot free throws, they're last in the Big 10 this year and it's pathetic, even painful to watch. I'm a lifelong Buckeye of more than 60 years, I'll still watch and root for them, but I have resigned myself to the fact that unlike football, we will NEVER sit on top of the mountain with Thad Matta as our head coach.
JT needs to find a seat on the bench, period! We all love his hustle but his skill set is sorely lacking. He can't score at the rim, cannot shoot free throws, commits more stupid fouls and foolish turnovers than points scored by a huge margin, he's a detriment to this team as a starter. Start Harris and Lyle in the back court, that should help both offensively and defensively, make us stronger up front and better in the back court.
