This is completely a matter of opinion, but I would bump the 2017 Penn State game up to #4. I can't even begin to describe the atmosphere in there when we took the lead. Obviously a comeback is always the most exciting, but I was at the NC and the Wisconsin B1G championship game, and the 2017 Penn State game is one I will NEVER forget.
Not so sure about the return of the silver bullets, as you mention this was the perfect matchup for our LBs, I don’t think they really did anything different, ttun just played right into their strengths with their 1963 style offense.
The offense however, unbelievable. That was an extremely good michigan defense that was embarrassed. I barely heard Rashan Gary’s name at all the entire game.
In place of the bullets I would nominate a mention of Ryan Days gameplay, that was a highlight of the game from my perspective. Fantastic design, approach and play calling (with the exception of the Martell series inside the 5) against the #1 defense in the country. Day deserves a lot of the credit for yesterday’s result.
My theory is two fold :
1. As you mention, maybe all these kids leaving early is starting to catch up with us. You simply can't sustain replacing that level of talent year after year, without at least one down year. Losing Bosa also factors in this year.
2. Why aren't we talking more about Luke Fickell? Not surprisingly he has a top ranked defense in Cincinnati this season. It's becoming clear how big of a factor he was in coaching these kids, his loss is hurting us most in my opinion.
Completely agree, their offense is extremely different from Purdue/Maryland. I don't think they have the creative play calling to take full advantage of our defensive flaws. This game may provide the final verdict on our LBs being not so great, or poorly coached.
Our team is so well coached, what a homerun hire coach Holtmann is turning out to be... We will be in the Final 4 in a few years.
I think Laurinaitis highlighted the problem with Werner, more than half the time he's lined up alongside the defensive line at the LOS, severely limiting his ability to read and react to plays.
I really hate to be the "fire the coaches" guy, but there is simply no way all these LBs are busts. All of the issues can be attributed to coaching here, I think we're starting to see the impact of Luke Fickell not being on staff anymore.
I’m happy college football was able to deliver an incredible experience for a kid who really deserved one. They’re lucky to have Tyler as Boilermaker.
I’m not one to call for coaches heads normally, but we all know these LBs are top recruits and athletes. As you mention the lack of improvement falls on Davis, and with this level of talent there aren’t any excuses, he’s starting to remind me of Jim Bollman.
The runnning game, historically bad feels right on point. I’ve been watching Ohio State for 20 years now and can’t remember it ever being this bad.
Honestly this wasn’t as surprising as Iowa. Two teams going in opposite directions, as we seemed to be playing worse each week, Purdue better. Random nationally televised night game against an up and coming good coach in Brohm who had his team prepared.
Ive been watching Ohio State football religiously for 21 years now, I can’t think of a season where we couldn’t run the football, at all. Also, we all know our LBs are highly recruited and talented athletes, they aren’t being coached properly.
Hopefully, like last season we will come off the loss playing better. As you mention, B1G championship and playoff spot are still available if we win out.
Unless you are simply commenting on other fans sentiment towards Alabama, I think you misunderstood my comment. Alabama is generally regarded as, and currently does look like, the best college football team. Many Ohio State fans (myself included) believe Ohio State should strive for, and can acheive that title, so it’s seems fitting to compare and I believe this why some fans are disapointed in a 7-0 team.
I am not disappointed though. I agree we should enjoy the ride, as I it doesn’t matter how you look, just that you keep winning. Jim Tressel taught me that in 2002.
I see his point, fans can get carried away complaining about a 7-0 team which has wins against TCU and Penn State. Ask Georgia fans how beneficial it was their team looked amazing every game, until they lost. We should try not to be mad every time we play a close game, we normally get everyone's best effort as we are the highlight on their schedule.
That being said, I know we are basically measuring ourselves against Alabama, so there are concerns... especially the LBs and one safety spot... Minnesota basically ran the same play over and over and was able to get yardage, however they did only score twice..
Yea I agree here, he was noticeably rattled the entire 1st half, the drops probably made it worse.
He just needed to relax a bit, and kudos to the coaching staff who recognized that... the 2nd half screen play philosophy certainly helped.
Have to say, the number 1 complaint most of the time from fans is play calling. I thought the offensive play calling in the 2nd half, especially that last TD drive, was the best I've seen since the playoff game vs Alabama.
Tip of the cap to Ryan Day & Kevin Wilson, awesome work.
Weber was extremely impressive, it’s clear he’s going to be a fan favorite this season... and how about our boy Terry McLaurin?!?!?
I think KJ Hill should be starting.
Can’t say enough about the defensive line, I mean that was ridiculous.
Honestly, outside of the secondary and some questionable LB play, couldn’t ask for a better start to the season... 77 points!
Agree with most here, very impressive first showing by Day. He addressed the topic he couldn't avoid, but kept the focus on the team.. came across humble and well prepared for the moment.
Was this the most difficult # decision? Seems like 7 has a lot of options... Greene, Galloway, Ginn and Gamble...
You have to respect not only Gamble playing both sides of the ball, but the volume at which he did it, on a National Championship team!
I will always say I've never watched a more electric player at Ohio State than Ted Ginn.... watching him run with the football was incredible, never seen anyone glide around the field like that... He was a threat to score a TD every time he touched the ball...
Ugh, not unexpected, but it's been frustrating seeing all these yahoo's sensationalizing everything to get views/clicks/attention (especially USA Today and PF). Plus, what Urban is clearly guilty of is lying to the media, so they're all pissed off at him to begin with.
I thought DiNardo's take was insightful.
Three things which bother me the most :
1 - The text message erasing. This doesn't indicate guilt of any kind, just shady.
2 - Urban still claims Shelley never told him about the 2015 texts with Courtney. Anyone who is married knows this can't possibly be true. My theory is that he and Shelley obviously still have severe doubts about Courtney's claims, which I think is completely understandable, but unfortunately in today's climate you can't come out and say that as you will be instantly painted as a domestic violence supporter.
3 - The media narrative that Ohio State cares more about winning than anything and did whatever it took to keep Urban on staff. This is simply not true. I don't believe Urban did anything which warrants his dismissal. We fired Woody, we fired Tress, we would be fine without Urban. The program will go on, and be successful either way, I trust our administration acted with integrity.
Ugh, I knew this wasn't over. In today's climate the accusation is almost all you need. Without bombshell evidence to the contrary, Ohio State will not have much of a choice in action here...
I believe by the end of the year Chase Young will have established himself as one of, if not THE, best players on the team.
Anyone understand taxes at this level? Why is the $840k "base salary" separated from the 4.5M "compensation"?
I don't agree. I root for B1G teams anytime they are playing out of conference, especially in significant games, as it reinforces or strengthens the conference's competitive reputation. If a B1G team plays in a championship game I will root for them, why would I root against them? I mean I wont be in the front row at the game in a Michigan State t-shirt, but I want Ohio State to compete against the best, and reputation and perception of conferences in college football matters (also basketball, to a lesser degree).
However, and I've been saying this for years, I draw the line at championships w/ michigan specifically. I will root for them to get there, but can't root for them to win one. I want our athletic program to be superior to theirs, and national championships are probably the biggest factor in that debate. Although to be honest, I actually kind of like Mo Wagner.
I agree. He could easily get a head start on his almost certain coaching career (I think he be a successful coach)... however knowing the competitor he is, seems logical he will pursue his playing career until he has no options...
I love Eleven Warriors.
I love J.T. Barrett.
This is the biggest puff piece I have ever seen on this site. For J.T., and somebody by the name of Zach Grossi. C'mon guys...
Ugh, enough with this already... I get that the kids like it, so wear these alternate things for one game a year, a night/big home game in the middle of the season... We should wear our original uniforms for the game. This is getting ridiculous, Gene Smith should push back on this but I guess when you pay $250M for apparel rights you get to call the shots... Just Do It.
Ah, just realized you are simply picking the opposite of him, sorry for wasting your time, and mine, by clicking on this article...lol
