2017 Ohio State Commit Danny Clark Focused on Improvement, Not Crowded Buckeye Quarterback Room

The line was dying down. Some of the top high school football talent in the country had entered Ohio Stadium, but Danny Clark made sure to get everyone's attention.

Ohio State's 2017 quarterback commit out of Massillon, Ohio and now a junior-to-be at Archbishop Hoban in Akron, decided he was going to be a Buckeye as soon as Urban Meyer's staff offered him a scholarship in December 2013.

Just in case anyone had forgotten he was all Buckeye, all the time, Clark rolled up to Friday Night Lights in his dad's Buckeye Van, complete with Ohio State's fight song blaring.

After he stepped out, Clark was greeted by Buckeye cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs outside the Ohio Stadium gate. Always intense, Coombs hardly cracked a smile, instead telling Clark it was time to get inside and get to work.

Clark did just that. Competing with other top talent from around the country, the lefty blessed with a solid frame fired darts all around the field Friday, again showing improvement from Ohio State's one-day camps in June.

"I feel like I've gotten immensely better as a quarterback," Clark said upon the camp's conclusion. "I've done a lot of work this offseason with my feet and then in turn that's helped a lot with my accuracy, throwing a tighter spiral."

It showed Friday, and Clark spent a lot of time with current Ohio State signal caller J.T. Barrett as well as his future quarterback coach, Tim Beck.

"Just getting to work with Coach Beck again was awesome. He's a great coach," Clark said. "Every single thing he says, I try it and then the next throw, in the next rep, it makes it a better ball. I throw a tighter spiral, throw a more accurate pass."

Clark certainly looks the part, at least physically. He's 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, a chiseled frame for someone who has two more years at Akron Hoban.

He wasn't the only big-name member of Ohio State's 2017 class in attendance Friday, either. Skill guys like Todd Sibley and Bruce Judson, as well as top offensive lineman Josh Myers. Cornerback Marcus Williamson was there, too, giving fans an early glimpse of the future.

That was all led by Clark.

"I think my favorite thing about Danny is that he's just a good dude," Myers said. "He comes across as a very personal-type guy, nice and good dude with all the good stuff going on."

Clark adores Ohio State and everything about it, saying multiple times during the interview how he remembers making trips to Columbus with his dad often when he was younger.

"I've been a Buckeye fan since I was six years old, me and my dad driving down (State Route) 315 every day looking at The Shoe," Clark said. "Ever since I knew what football was, I wanted to be a Buckeye."

It's because of that love that Clark sees no ill will toward an already packed Buckeye quarterback room, with guys like Torrance Gibson, Joe Burrow and Tristen Wallace set to be on campus prior to his arrival in two years.

"That's the type of player that I am, I want to be the best, I want to beat the best," Clark said. "I've wanted to be a Buckeye ever since I could remember. It doesn't deter my decision — it just makes me want to work harder."
