Buckeye excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

Women's Hockey Comes up Clutch in OT

Ohio State women's hockey was victorious over Minnesota State this past Saturday in a 2-1 win at the OSU Ice Rink. The 5th ranked Buckeyes wasted no time getting on the board with a goal from forward Liz Schepers. Minnesota State would respond with a goal from Tristen Traux with a little over 12 minutes left in the second period. The score would remain locked at one for the rest of regulation, with Senior Madison Field eventually scoring the game winner in overtime.

While it took some extra time, it seemed as if the Buckeyes were destined to win this game. The Ohio State offense fired 44 shots on goal and goalie Andrea Braendli finished with a whopping 33 saves, only conceding the one goal in the second period.

Following this win, OSU improved to 5-1 on the season. The Buckeyes will travel to Minnesota this upcoming weekend to play the 3rd ranked Golden Gophers in Ridder Arena. Puck drop is set for 8:07 P.M.

Field Hockey Defeats Kent State, Increases Win Streak to Four

The Ohio State field hockey team dominated Kent State on Sunday in a shutout victory. Freshman Katie Pyle got the Bucks on the board with a goal in the 18th minute of the first half. Seven minutes later, Sophomore Sammy Stone increased the lead to 2-0 with her fifth goal of the season. Junior Genevieve Penzone essentially secured a victory with a goal midway through the second half. Junior Whitney Harris would nab herself a goal in the final seconds of the game brining the final score to 4-0.

With the win Ohio State improves to 10-6 on the season. The Buckeyes will look to finish their season strong as they host Michigan State on Friday before traveling to Ann Arbor to face the 7th ranked Wolverines.

Women's Volleyball Sweeps Michigan State in Straight Sets

The Buckeyes swept the Spartans this Sunday, but it wasn't easy.

The first set was tight all the way through. The largest lead was 21-18 with the advantage for the Buckeyes. Michigan State would pull back within one to make it 24-23, but Junior Ana Beatriz Franklin would secure the set with a hard spike.

Ohio State would win the second set handily. The largest lead was 16-9 with the advantage for OSU, and while the Spartans would make efforts to chip away at the lead, the Buckeyes claimed the second set with a 25-19 victory.

The third set was the closest. At one point, Ohio State was up 17-13, but Michigan State managed to complete the comeback this time and tie things up at 22-all. The teams would go back and forth for the next eight points, until Junior Madison Smeathers put the Buckeyes up 27-26. A combined block from Smeathers and Sophomore Lauren Witte would secure the victory.

With the win, Ohio State improves to 12-8 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten. The Bucks will travel to Indiana for their next match this Friday at 7 P.M.
