On Haskins dropping his pads in the running game, Meyer quipped: "He dropped some other things, too ... I probably shouldn't say that."

His balls finally dropped...meaning he decided to man up and take some hits.

That was my immediate thought then i remember some comments about having some bad weight.  Maybe he's been dieting too? haha

When asked if he'll be here next here, he answered that he plans to be. Not the most affirmative statement, but just that that is still true today is big in my eyes, assuming it is honest. Could be waiting to consult with doctors/his family about his health?

HS
JMeadows's picture

Nah, it's about focus. He wandered off to talk about the kicking game as a hint that reporters should ask no question before its time.  If you think about 2006, that team was not focused and they got blown out because of it.  He doesn't tolerate distraction, but his responses are a helluva lot funnier than guys like Saban.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

HS

Urban what are your plans for next season?

I plan to coach. And their kicking game is great too. Their guys really keep contain on the kicks

Give a firmer answer and the question won't be asked any more. He apparently couldn't, though.

that's not even close to being correct.  You answer one question then there's ten more.

Wyatt Davis was "a little lost in the weeds" his freshman year, but has "been scratching and clawing for playing time" the last five weeks. Meyer said he didn't want to rotate him in because he didn't want to disrupt the flow on the offensive line.

This is encouraging for Saturday.

HS
CptBuckeye24's picture

Reminds me Pat Elflein playing for Hall after his benching or suspension. Both RS freshmen at RG

HS
85ThruTheHeart's picture

Yeah, but what else is he gonna say? “Wyatt’s not game ready yet which is why he hasn’t rotated. He’s our only option though so we’re going with it“?

Here’s hoping that wasn’t just coach speak.

HS

Ehh Wyatt has been in as an extra TE over the past month or so, so he's ready to play

HS
CincyBuck's picture

Yeah; Meyer's been complimenting Meyer for a few weeks.  And he's been rotating in.  So I'm pretty confident he's telling the truth, here.  Hopefully there's minimal drop off from Knox.

Love the mention of PC giving a pregame speech...then goes out and has a career game.

Love the entire oline grading as a champ, because they deserved it.

Love Malik Harrison serving as a reminder that linebacking at Ohio State is indeed alive and well.

And I love that a punt block serves as one of the centerpieces in a huge win from an Urban Meyer led squad.

Go Buckeyes.

I concur 100% with you on these takes, Hove.

HS
Tater_Schroeder's picture

Every time Michigan lined up to punt, both my brother and I screamed to set up for return. That's why I'm watching the game sitting in a recliner and not calling plays in a coach's box.

It's now onto NW. They have won 15 of 16 BIG games. That is very impressive. Their one loss was TTUN this season 20-17, after leading 17-0. This will be a tough game.

HS

Meyer said it hasn't been decided whether Ohio State will continue to use the Tate Martell package, but "I'm a big Tate Martell fan, so I'm pushing it real hard ... I want him in the game."

Klatt correctly diagnosed the problem on the broadcast.  You HAVE to attempt a pass out of the formation or its just never going to work.  Hell send one into the first row if nothing is open, but you need to space them out a little more.

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

Nothing is right with their use of Tate. The situations that he comes in aren't always appropriate, the predictability of the play calling, and when he comes in it's almost always for one (again, predictable) play and then back to the sideline.

I think a package more like what they did in 2015 when they decided to bring in JT for better red zone success makes much more sense, if you're going to bring in the backup QB. But what they're doing with Tate is not effective, and I don't think it's fair to him OR to Haskins.

“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt

HS
Byaaaahhh's picture

It shouldn't be hard for them. How would you run JT with this offense? Okay, erase his name and put in Martell. Boom, done.

HS
BuckZealot's picture

Agreed, they are stacking the box against him.  I think a rollout with the option of a pass,  option to RB or QB keeper would have them guessing more.....

Enjoy the wins over *ichigan, ....I still remember the dark days of the 1990's....

HS
JMeadows's picture

Yeah, you could almost hear Michigan's d-line smacking their lips and saying, okay boys run off tackle.  The hell of it is the kid was 10 for 10 passing earlier in the year and he doesn't panic under pressure.  If they would have passed on either goal line stance first down, if nothing else it would have set up a run on second if it was incomplete.  I couldn't understand why they ran, ran, ran at all.Tate is useful because of his versatility.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

Yep...and I think it's coming.  I'm not saying they are saving it for anything in particular...but you'll see it. Probably the jump pass.  Hopefully against Bama.

You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton

HS
GOOMBAY's picture

But will Braxton ever throw it?

Seriously, though, the other side of the argument is that Tate *never* passes in this package (and that becomes a given)... Until he does. I'll defer to Meyer/Day/Wilson on when that moment arrives.

HS
JMeadows's picture

You may be right Goombay.  Why show it when you don't need it?

Starting to believe he’s playing chess with Tater! He’s assuming if he keeps it and scores good , if not film study will used to stop him and then boom here comes the pass play.

Hope so.  I can sense his frustration, but credit to him, he's not become a distraction(except for opposing defensive coordinators).

We were prolific on offense, we were pretty damn good on defense, and we were special on special teams. best way to beat Michigan.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

I feel like a jerk.  Not because of some of my posts here but because I wanna see Tate.  I was jacked up at The Game when he came in but they never seem to put him in a great position.  Now I know, Haskins is fantastic.  He's the real deal, slings the ball around, has impeccable accuracy, and is cool as a cucumber.  But you know what I miss? Electricity!  X Brax was electric, Pryor was electric...I know, those guys couldn't throw it around like Haskins or maybe even JT but you knew those guys were gonna make something happen one way or another.

I get that feeling from Tate Martell.  He's a winner, straight up.  I saw spring game and know his passing wasn't that great compared to Haskins or Burrow, but that's a lot to ask from a redshirt freshman, to live up to those 2 guys.  I believe that Martell can be the perfect combination of a guy who can juke dudes out of their cleats but also put that ball right where the receiver can go up and get it.  If Haskins stayed for another year, I have to admit it would be bittersweet.  Haskins definitely has what it takes to take us to a title but I feel Martell fits the scheming of Meyer/Day better.

First world problems.

I bleed scarlet...literally

HS
Cincity Buck's picture

Dwayne Haskins may be the most underappreciated QB in Ohio State history with all of the Tate lovers.  Tate will have his time to shine, but I would not  take Haskins out under any circumstances the remainder of this season, especially now that he is willing get some tough yards with his legs.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Given the opportunities in front of he and the team as far as games left, he could very well end up with between 47-50 TD passes and around 4,800 yards passing for the year. Video game numbers for a team that could still yield two 1,000 yard running backs.

If you watched the beating Joe took Saturday night and the heart he showed then said to yourself what would he do with our receiving corp and our RB's along with Day and Wilson coaching and then you should like I say we would be just fine!

Poor guy took 29 carries that's a hell of a beating to take especially if you have ever seen the shoulder pads a QB wears.

HS
JMeadows's picture

You have him run the ball six straight times at the goal line and you expect blinding success?  I get the feeling that if Haskins goes pro, a whole lot of you are going to go back through your notes on JT and insert the name Tate.  He has not really been used since Tulane, when he was 10 for 14 for 115 yards. He was 3 for 4 for 33 yards against Oregon State and 10 for 10 for 120 yards against Rutgers.  He is no Haskins, but the kid can pass if Day lets him.  Is 23 for 28 for 268 yards something to complain about?  And most of the calls for Tate on the goal line was due to the fact that Haskins didn't seem interested in running the ball at all and the Red Zone offense was among the worst in the country. So you can call that crying if you'd like, but if you're going to use him let him do more than run between the guard and tackle.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

haskins has been so  impressive this year - i hope he comes back for 1 more year. however, if he doesn't, i hope baldwin is ready - tate martell is fun to watch, but he won't be able to get us to the big title - let alone the playoffs. honestly, i'd love to see martell convert to a slot receiver....i think he'd be very good at that

Meyer seems to have turned the corner, not regarding his health, yet how he presents himself and the reactions. It appears that the sullen, feeling sad and sorry for himself Meyer has left and the - If I am going to suffer this pain then I am going to share and revel in it Meyer has come!
