Greg Schiano is a hot commodity.
Like a Hot Potato?
Funny, I was about to type that.
And he comes with free shipping during the holiday season.
I hate the offseason.
Evvvvvvverybody wants to start a thread today ...
Really surprised about Helton. Everything I've read recently stated that he had to beat ND to keep his job. Weird.
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
Does this mean James Franklin remains at Penn State?
I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.
I think Kingsbury will be courted by some NFL teams. He's a great QB coach/OC.
That, or Ryan Gosling needs a stand in.
Yeah, sucks to be Kliff today, with those looks and a $4.2M buyout.
Sounds like a great fit at Michigan.
Nah, they already have another former fired HC in the shark humper.

Stunned about Helton. With two new NFL teams and their brand new, state of the art stadium, USC is in deep competition for the sports dollar in LA. They have their own $300M renovation going on at the coliseum so they need a team that gets the fans excited to lay down those dollars and if chat rooms are any indication of the mood of the fanbase, Clay Helton isn't the one to lead the team into the new era.
I'm shocked about Helton. Imagine the outrage if OSU kept a coach that just went 5-7.
Tom Brady lost to John Cooper. Never forget.
Or 9-3 a bunch of times.
Or 2-10-1 v. TSUN.

Hollywood Hoke surviving is surprising. That is Brady Hoke's greatest legacy....the nickname he gave. We also have Cajun Hoke at LSU. Anymore Hoke's out there?
Always thought Fedora was Diet Hoke.
Harbaugh is now Hoke Zero...and four.
How I imagine Hoke on the recruiting trail:
USC is no longer an elite program, big time players don't want to go their anymore. Can't say I'm surprised, considering the current issues in Souther California. Rampant wild fires due to forestry mismanagement. Heroin needles and feces everywhere. California is slowly becoming worse and worse, plus everything is super expensive gas prices are like 6 dollars a gallon.
Successful people do what they have to, whether they feel like it or not
Yup, UCLAs offense has been that bad.....
I thought that was just Ann Arbor
He's thinking of San Francisco where needles and feces aren't exactly everywhere, but close enough.
The Browns are no longer the worst franchise in all of professional sport.
Why the downvotes? Who doesnt like feces?

You might be reading a bit too much Fox news. I work in San Francisco and the biggest problem the city is facing is too many very high paying jobs. The area has been the biggest wealth creation engine in the history of the world these past 30 years. There is new construction everywhere in SF and throughout the Silicon Valley peninsula.
BTW - the fires are happening on federal land too so I look forward to hearing the about the resignation of the US interior secretary.
Discussing politics on 11W? Oh my.
Macdaddybuckeye interjected a political statement. I followed up.
He got some of his information wrong, but MacDaddy did not make a political statement.
And even if he did, you could have simply corrected him as I thought about doing.
Send the Earth Reverberating
If it wasn't a political statement, he repeated a number of Tweets by our Commander-In-Chief.
Well, as momma always said, two wrongs don't make a right. No need for you to get political either. This board is not for that.
It was pretty obviously political.
I know these guys make a lot of money but I hate that any organization fires people this time of year. Bah humbugging if you ask me but to answer the question I think Day stays as Meyer will likely need to retire or get a medical miracle.
Meyer doesn’t need a medical miracle, just a stent, or less stress. One or the other.
I was really hoping Rutgers would part ways with Ash, Ash would get a better gig, and Rutgers would hire Les Miles. But it wasn't meant to be.
Still could happen. Would love to have him back after we find Schiano another job.
The more important part was I wanted Les Miles in the B1G
When Jeff Brohm leaves for louisville, Purdue should get Mike Leach.
1. Kevin Wilson to his alma mater will be discussed, but also rumored toxicity.
2. If Schiano goes, Grinch will be the next DC.
Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
Eh, the Wilson/IU thing I really think was more a revolt by Tom Allen. He wanted Wilson's job. Kevin Wilson to UNC actually makes a lot of sense.
Considering how much NFL defenses are struggling this year I really am starting to believe an NFL team will offer Schiano a DC job. I actually thought Belichick might hire him to replace Patricia this year but it didnt happen.
Mack Brown is rumored to be the next coach at UNC.
Wilson to UNC may not even be a possibility
Why would they take a dinosaur out of retirement?
Im old enough to remember mack brown at UNC with natrone means. He took them from 10 losses to 10 wins. Pretty impressive for UNC football. Not sure what a program like UNC would want a second go around with an aging coach. Seems strange. Maybe they want some stability
Maybe they figure they can get a couple good years out of a legend-like when Bill Walsh returned to Stanford in the 90s. It is kinda odd, but maybe they don't have anyone they are really excited about at the moment.
And the question, insofar as Grinch is concerned, is why? What in the devil has he done to distinguish himself?
Coach Meyer must have seen something, as Coach Grinch was brought on from Washington State specifically to become DC when Coach Schiano moves on.
This is, and has been, Coach Schiano's defense. Assume that Coach Grinch is providing input to the defense, but making no ultimate decisions regarding same, even as he coaches the safeties. This is Schiano's scheme and Coach Meyer probably has significant decisive input as to who plays where as anybody.
Coach Grinch hasn't had a chance to show what his is capable of doing under his own scheme. Hopefully, he soon will.

i know this is a fired-coach thread, but any info on saturday recruit reactions?
There is a thread for that.
DV all you want I don't care. You posted in that thread. Keep things tidy around here.
fwiw kgb, i didnt dv your neg comment. my post was made before any recruits tweeted their reactions to the game. we see you have a fat finger glued to dv'ing 11W posters. chill dude
I almost hate to bring this up now, but, with USC being settled at the moment, the biggest outstanding coaching domino out there to fall this off-season is us. I don’t like rushing Urban into what has to be a terribly tough decision, but, whatever that happens to be (and, for the record, I hope like hell that he stays), I hope that he makes it rather quickly. He owes Gene Smith the opportunity to lock down a replacement (if that’s what needs to happen) ASAP and not leave us hanging well into January or beyond.
We won’t be left hanging. We call, they come.
Urban is still actively recruiting, which does't sound like someone who is looking to ride off into the sunset would be doing.
Urban has given no indication that he’s going anywhere. It’s made up shut by the talking heads that the internet ran with. Fake news

USC is retaining Helton.
How far this program has fallen... If they choose to keep Helton, then they deserve the 7-5 and 6-6 seasons that will result.
The B1G needs Bert. Someone make room and then come on home, Bert.
Michigan + Bert. I can't imagine a better combination.
Didnt Bert get his start as an OL coach? Wouldnt it be funny if Bert replaced Ed Warinner LOL.
Ive always thought Bert is the heir apparent to Ferentz. Bert seems made for Iowa.
Texas Tech and NC are really the biggest vacancies right now?
personally I view it as
1. Colorado (decent current roster, decent chance at Pac-12 South, decent recruiting grounds)
2. Texas Tech (need some serious defensive coaching)
3. Louisville (tire fire, hard division, but their new AD is trying to clean it up; current roster would be talented if convinced to stay)
4. UNC (basketball school with recruiting in the tank, 6-8 regional recruiting rivals)
Those ACC schools seem to be the longest road back of the current lot. I've also heard rumblings out of Kansas State about whether or not this is the final year of grace for Papa Snyder.
If Brohm leaves Purdue for Louisville that will open Purdue. Does Fickell then take that job or stay at UC?
I also think there might be something to the Lincoln Riley to the NFL rumors.
Also, Harbaugh's brother is stepping down from the Ravens this offseason. I would imagine he would be a candidate at Maryland or elsewhere.
I could see Riley leaving. He's done a great job, but he'll be lucky if the next man up at QB is half the player Mayfield and Murray were. His stock may have peaked.
IMO, Coach Fickell should stay at Cincy.
It is the ideal HC job for him, and he has quickly distinguished himself there. Unless he aspires to a bigger stage, he should remain at Cincy 10+ years. Recruit Ohio, where he has an established track record, and build something lasting.
Wouldn't it be a hoot if Harbaugh gets fired after next season and Michigan hires Fickell?
I cannot see that as ever happening

The problem with Snyder in past years is that he has repeatedly refused to retire unless his son Sean is hired as the next head coach, something that the KSU AD has adamantly refused to do (for good reason- Sean Snyder makes Jay Paterno look like an future coaching star). Given the man’s legendary status at that school, the AD has been reluctant to fire Snyder despite an increasing record of diminishing returns, but that may be changing. The tragedy of KSU is that Brent Venables has literally been holding out the past decade for Old Man Bill to retire, as he would jump to take that job in a heartbeat.
Man I’d love to see Venables leave Clemson - he’s a big reason for their success.
Good news for us thus far. I don't think Day bolts unless an ELITE opening is available.
Or an NFL HC job...
Ryan should be careful what he wishes for. It sometimes is a good thing for a coordinator to learn his head coaching skills at a school with less pressure and then move up.
UNC-Chapel Hill is looking at Day really hard. This may be the place for him as it is the school kids in NC want to go and play for. It sets up a lot like Texas does for Herman. He wins his first couple of years he gets his choice of the kids in this state. I really hate UNC-CH. NC State has risen from ashes under Dave Doren and are starting to get the kids to consider them over UNC-CH which isn't setting well with those douche bag elitist. Satterfield from App State is the other guy on their radar.
Hey Cancer! This ass kicking is brought to you by the Guernsey county mafia. Give it Hell 84!
Obviously they're considering him, he's the hottest name on the market IMO. Problem is, UNC will never be an elite program. If Day's smart, and I think he is, he wouldn't go to a program that's not a powerhouse to directly compete with Clemson both on the field and in recruiting.
I live in NC and most of the top kids go out of state to the big schools like Bama and Clemson. Even the B1G gets their fare share.
Can't believe USC is retaining Helton and Illinois is retaining Smith. Yikes!
Lovie has a nice recruiting class coming in, I think Illinois is smart to stick with with him-they aren't going to get make a bigger 'splash" hire than him, currently.
I wonder how Jimmy Boys discussions are going to go over in the future up north as the pressure from the alums increase. Let's be honest, I am sure there are a few not happy. I hope they keep paying him his millions.....we enjoy it here.
Enjoying daily the 62-39 ttun beatdown.
I have heard from a friend that Jim Harbaugh has had conversations with the Browns. Not sure what the interest level is from either side at this point, but certainly says a lot that he is listening to other job opportunities. He knows this was his year to win, so maybe it’s time to walk away now?
If Day takes an HC position, I'd love to have Kingsbury as the OC/QB Coach.
“You know how they say we only use 10 percent of our brains? I think we only use 10 percent of our hearts.”
one big fish is lurking out there for a HC job.............Bert
Bert is coaching equivalent of carp: strictly catch & release
Shandy is not beer
There are rumblings that Brian Kelly will leave Notre Dame for the NFL if he gets a call. That he realizes that however this season ends, Notre Dame will never do better....
I'm honestly surprised, and a bit disheartened, that Rutgers is retaining Chris Ash. The only reason I say that is I would love it if he came back to coach our defense next year.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
