If Pete Thamel is saying it, THAT makes me nervous. Very nervous.

Barney Fife lives, and he lives amongst us.

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

Agreed, but Thamel didn't say anything about Meyer's future in coaching, or offer any sort of insider info. The article he wrote was simply echoing what others noticed - that Urban looked to be suffering in the Maryland game.

If his article noted anything definitive about Urban possibly stepping down because of his health, then I would definitely be concerned. And if Urban's health were to become an issue, Thamel would be one of the first guys to write about it.

First off do I want Urban to go? No! Do I want him to fire Davis, Stud, and Tavor? Yes.  However, if Urban is to go, what about bringing in Dantonio? He needs a fresh start, and give him dollars to grab to the best assistants in the country.

GO BUCKS!

HS
NuttyBuckeye's picture

No way in Hell do I want Dantonio as our HC.  I am not so sure he can recruit the way this staff has.  If anyone gets the offer, it should be Ryan Day first.   He is a great recruiter as well and this may keep Wilson on a little longer if he can be the exclusive OC.

But it's obvious that Meyer has not looked comfortable or completely healthy on the sidelines multiple times this season.

I can only remember once when he actually came out and said he had a headache and that was explained and he said then that he plans on coaching for a long time and that was a few games ago..... past history could show you if you extrapolate his actions on the sidelines throughout his career that he must always be in pain ... but he is in pain emotionally because he cares for his team and players...

HS
Invictus Buck's picture

Also he uses psychology one way or another every season. He is a strategist, the plan may be to have another operation for the cyst, but not let on about that until after the season. He does not want to be a distraction.

I also remember him saying he plans to keep coaching.

HS

I just don’t get the _ichigan love fest. Yes they are improved and for the first time since 2011 they would seem to have a real shot at winning. That said, OSU is still 10-1 and hammers the maize and blue at basically every opportunity over the past two decades. Couple that with a coach who is undefeated vs this rival, and I will ride with the Bucks. Yes I have watched the defense and O line, and neither are where we want them. But they are also not crap on a stick, and I fully expect everyone to step up this weekend and show what this team is made of by sticking his words up Higdon’s arse.

They're playing angry, with a chip.

We are still trying to figure some things out, particularly on D, during the week of game #12 for the season, and we've been prone to mistakes all year.

Can we win?  Of course.  But we have more boxes unchecked this season than in years past, which is kind of a foreign concept to us.  There is a wide spectrum of ways this team could react as the game unfolds, as opposed to the "business as usual" model since 2012.

Let me give you some stats about this sat game on Sat.......

-Urban has the BEST HC active in Nov (better than Saban or Dabo)

-Urban is 29-0 at noon kickoffs

-Urban at tOSU has NEVER lost as an underdog

-Urban is the BEST active HC vs the AP top 25 (better than Saban or Dabo)

-Urban is 6-0 v TTUN

-TTUN hasnt won in Columbus since 2000.

They did beat up PSU, but as you noted, they did it at home, not in a White Out game at PSU (last year, they got whooped by the Lions as they were the White Out opponent in 2017). Playing at home in the daylight is quite different from playing a night game at Happy Valley.

PSU also had their one true offensive weapon, McSorley, hurt and not very effective for that game.

The better common opponent to look at is Sparty. Both are rivalry games, both were played @MSU. And both the games were similar, with similar outcomes. TTUN beat MSU 21-7, OSU beat MSU 26-6.

Those are mutually exclusive.

Even against only 2 wideouts?  If you put the safties and LB’s in the box & play a short zone?

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

I'm working under the assumption that they are covering three receivers, which is what most teams the Buckeyes have faced use.  UM may only go with two wide, but they'll have one to two TEs, which have historically killed the Buckeyes in zone coverage.

"You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, & in the manner in which you live.
So, live. Live. Fight like hell. And when you get too tired to fight then lay down and rest and let somebody else fight for you. "

HS
CincyBuck's picture

Those are mutually exclusive.

Not really.  You can run all sorts of coverages out of most formations.  Though running certain zone schemes while putting 8 in the box runs the risk of putting someone out of position (i.e., that person getting to his zone after the snap will be a challenge).

I'm not saying we should go to a 4-4 Cover 3.  But I'd be tempted to mix in more zone-blitz concepts for the Game.  Patterson's playing in the Shoe for the first time.  It'd be nice to rough him up.

Sure, it'll leave a zone open.  But, if we're being honest, that tends to happen anyway (e.g., a LB gets smoked, someone doesn't recognize a TE/RB releasing, etc.)  Might as well have an extra rusher.  Plus, there's less opportunity for an 80-yard play because all eyes are on the QB.

TL; DR, our LBs (and maybe our DBs) are always good for 4-5 colossal coverage mistakes a game.  Might as well have a 5th rusher on those plays.

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

Though running certain zone schemes while putting 8 in the box runs the risk of putting someone out of position (i.e., that person getting to his zone after the snap will be a challenge).

With the problems they've had being out of position, why would they intentionally do it?

HS
CincyBuck's picture

TBH, I don't see many issues of people being out of position at the snap.  It's people having no Fing clue what they're doing after the snap.  I guess I'd rather have Patterson facing 5 rushers, trying to find the open zone, than having 4 seconds to find whoever blew his coverage on that given snap.

HS
seyekcuB's picture

Whatever they do they had better adjust on the fly. I cant tell you how many times Ohio state left the short side of the field open last week in the first half. There is no reason with all the coaches on the field and in the box they cant figure this shit out faster.

HS
brutus0717's picture

Coaches coaches coaches. I get tired of hearing that. The short side was left wide open, almost every time, because the player from the short side over-adjusted to pre-snap motion. I'm sure the coaches told Arnette not to do it after the second play of the game because I saw Urban yell at him when he came off the field, but he did it 2 more times after that. You can coach these kids, but are they getting it?

If that mistake is made just once in THIS GAME, I would sit his ass down.  If he has not learned it yet, he is not going to.

What's round on the ends and high in the middle? Tell me if you know!

HS
BucksLover0214's picture

Well this isn't the NFL where the coaches get whatever the GM gives them.  They ultimately choose their players, and develop them.  If you have upperclassmen players on your team that can't take direction, then you have a poor program.  We've seen a terrible lack of discipline when it comes to penalties.  The fact that some of these highly rated recruits can't see the field, or play poorly when they do, points to a coaching problem.

They hate us cuz they aint us!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HS
CincyBuck's picture

Coaches coaches coaches. I get tired of hearing that.

I agree, man.  People keep on blaming scheme, strategy, etc.  The vast majority of issues that I'm seeing have nothing to do with that.  They stem from the players' inability to adhere to the most basic fundamentals -- e.g., gap responsibility, contain, basic tackling, etc.

Arnette lost contain -- something you learn in grade school.  White whiffed because he failed to wrap-up -- something you learn in grade school.  We repeatedly over-pursue, fill the same gap with all 3 LBs, and leave the cutback wide open AF -- again, something you learn in grade school.

Go ahead and criticize Schiano.  His refusal to make changes, despite terrible performance, is worthy of criticism.  But you can't tell me the entire coaching staff hasn't drilled these basic things into the players' heads.

HS
BucksLover0214's picture

Don't you drill the fundamentals at every level?  Isn't that what fall camp is for?  Aren't the fundamentals what they said they were working on during the bye?  If it was one player constantly making mistakes it'd be one thing, but when the whole team looks undisciplined I have to go back to the coaches.  My criticism hasn't been in-game adjustments.  It's our whole base defense, because we don't have the same LBs/Safeties that we once did.

They hate us cuz they aint us!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You are correct, but I did not forget. That is actually the last game that I attended in person, so I re_e_ber it well.

Probably not the best wording on _y part. Were they a threat? Yes. But they were not favored and few outside of AA really expected that they could walk into Colu_bus and walk out with a win. As I noted above, when it comes to PSU, where and when you play the game matters. I give them credit for beating PSU convincingly, but they did so at home, not playing a White Out game at PSU. While OSU has won 2 barn burner games against PSU in back to back seasons, TTUN has traded home field ass kickings with PSU (last year PSU beat them 42-13).

Again, their win over PSU was impressive, and you gotta give them kudos. But their other 2 toughest opponents, both played on the road, they struggled mightily. The ND result I kind of write off as it was the opener. The other was surviving an ugly game at NW, 20-17, after trailing 17-0.

There is an old movie from the 1930's called Knute Rockne All American. It told the story of the man who made Notre Dame a football power. If you're a football history fan this is a must see. Apparently, Rockne coached until he was in a wheel chair because he loved it so much. Can you imagine that today? Coaches back then made little money so he couldn't rely on his riches like they can today. It's just a hokey old movie but it sure brings brings some perspective on college football. I think it's hilarious that the press seemed to buy into Urban saying that he didn't talk to the team about being underdogs and I couldn't believe that the question about how he dealt with being an underdog with the team was even raised in the presser.  As noted above, Urban is the master of the bulletin board.  I expect every other word out of his mouth come 11:30 on Saturday is going to be "disrespect."

I've been walking around here saying the same thing for weeks.

I still don't know the answer.

HS

Here's the answer, 3:  they're not!  But that's not the issue.  You don't have to be invincible to score points on the Buckeyes.  Ask Oregon State; Purdue; Nebraska;  Maryland.

Funny it was Weber who responded to Higdon.  They recruitment of those two on NSD will forever be linked: Higdon flipping to TTUN at the last minute is likely why Weber picked the good guys. https://www.freep.com/story/sports/high-school/2015/02/04/mike-weber-ohi...

The story about the 6 year old hiking his way out of being lost was good.  I got lost in the woods near my grandparents farm around that age for a couple of hours.  I did have their German Shepherd with me though - I think the dog figured I was being stupid and made sure nothing happened to me (I did walk within a couple of feet of a sleeping deer that exploded out of nowhere & scared the crap out of me).  I finally figured I would follow the creek & it lead to another farmhouse where an older guy walked me back through the woods to get to my grandparents place.  I did that in July, it was concerning enough then without having to be worried about hypothermia.  I taught my kids to follow water downstream if they were ever lost in the woods - I foolishly followed it upstream.

So the message here, as already pointed out, the pressure is on them. I’d expect a few unforced errors, not to mix metaphors. But once again, Shae is an issue. The Game to him [most likely] does not mean what it means to another weasel who’s lived it. Obviously he knows it’s a big/pivotal game but will he press as hard as say Fabio or Higdon? Prolly not. Kid scares me. As is said before, he’s just mobile enough to keep drives alive.

If Urban leaves for health reasons, I wouldn’t be too surprised. Becoming a grandparent really changes your perspective on what’s important. My Dad refused to retire for 5 years after he turned 65. He loved his business as much as he loved anything. Then my son arrived this year and now he’s finally looking to retire and move here to be closer to my son. My guess is that he wants to do everything possible to be around and healthy for his grandkids.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I can see where that’s true but Urban’s son in law is on the staff so he’s probably in the office nearly every day. The rub may be if he’s ready to go coach elsewhere and Urban’s grandson moves away. Like your father at 70, Urban’s only in his 50’s and while I’m sure he could afford to “retire” comfortably, a) he’d be young to do it (although he’d be in demand as a commentator) and b) would he be happy? Because it’s not as if he hasn’t been down that road before.

If Urban was definitely coming back why don't he come out and say it. I know he said the plan was to come back but that is why short of will come back. This can't help recruiting. I looked forward all winter for this season only to have McMurphy ruin it. Then our own president not standing behind him with the suspension and now racial slurs and retirement rumors, all of these dropped on us before big events or games. Someone out there is spinning a masterful web to catch us. I am sure coach would not looked so "pained" if we played some defense. Look for me nobody seen my pain during games or they would be making funeral arrangements. Hopefully coach takes a vacation and comes out swinging next year.

Bear with me, because what I want and hope for is to see several more years of Urban Meyer at OSU including another natty.  I want to see him drive a dagger through these naysayers, get the personnel to make us 9 units strong again, and get us back to the top of the mountain.  We aren’t that far off.

But it seems like we are approaching a “tipping point.”  The August mess with Smith seemed to suck years off his life like that machine in The Princess Bride.  The mid-season revelations about his medical condition assured that it is something he has coached with for a long time but also that it’s not going away and has some troubling symptoms.  And now, Thamel is banging the drum about retirement which means either Meyer put his trust and faith in the wrong journalist (Thamel was one of the guys he let in about the cyst) or there is a real possibility that he will be stepping down.  Because Thamel is not McMurphy from all I’ve seen.

If Meyer is staying and has no plans otherwise, I think Gene Smith needs to be shown the door.  If Meyer is intending to continue and yet we have this slow drip of murmurs out of the program saying otherwise, it speaks to the athletic department not having its act together, with really big consequences.  Recruits are hearing it, and the 2019 class has mostly held strong so far, but we have already been losing ground on some prospects.

Bucks D will match up well against a ttun O that uses little pre snap motion, the Bucks O is clicking, we paid off the refs, Higdon’s “guarantee” just made motivation easier, and most importantly, Urban has proven over and over he knows how to beat ttun with whatever resources he has at his disposal. A close win for the good guys on Saturday. Surrender cobra’s while in the fetal position for ttun fans.

As an OSU fun I a tired of the word "sources".  I know media has a job to do but seriously, 2 sources?  I don't know Urban personally but somehow I feel as he is not the person who calls up friends and talks about his personal life.  The only people who probably know the truth is his family.  Urban has already come out this season and said "I want to stay at OSU for as long as I can".  I know this is not concrete and coaches lie all the time but feel this is a little different.  For everyone talking about his health which I know is relative.  When he first came back people were like "something wrong he has no emotion" then it was "what is wrong with him he is showing a lot of emotion and he doesn't look right".  I hope he stays as long as he can.  He is currently 73-8 at OSU 2 big ten titles and 1 national championship and I do not even want to think about replacing him.

But I do know that the Buckeyes play Michigan this week. Meyer's never lost to Michigan at Ohio State and he ain't about to start now, regardless of his future.

I just don’t see from where this confidence comes. I keep trying to find reasons that the Buckeyes will win, but I can’t. Every place I look, UM has the advantage. I know the Bucks are 10-1, but that’s a function of not really playing anyone who’s any good, and really struggling to defeat many of those “not good” teams. UM has the type of QB - good runner, slightly above average passer - who will torch the Buckeye D (paging Trace McSorley).

I want to believe that the Bucks will win, but based upon the teams’ performances, the Buckeye defensive staff, and Meyer’s demeanor, I just can’t any reason to substantiate that belief.

HS
jamesrbrown322's picture

I’m talking about the actual matchups as they occur on the field. And IMO, OSU skill positions vs UM DBs and LBs May actually be an advantage for UM. It’s close, but given how bad OSU’s OL has been (and the fact that far too many Haskins passes are under 8 yards) it’s definitely a Wolverine advantage.

Urban himself said that he was coming back next year, health issues will hopefully be resolved next year with the firing of 3 coaches. Firing might be a bad word, but I do see 3 leaving, Stud., Schiano, Davis. Question marks for Day and Wilson.

HS
Arizona_Buckeye's picture

Okay - I'm logging off the world for a bit - this is getting out of control.  We lose one fucking game and Urban is getting fired and/or leaving, 1/2 the Buckeye Nation was expecting us to lose the last 3 games and screaming burn it down, and, of course, TTUN is so invincible that our team doesn't have a chance and should just throw in the towel right now!

Sometimes I really hate the Internet and the people who post wildly speculative shit that goes viral just because it has Urban as the subject.... yeesh

I live in Tulsa OK. I can tell you one thing for sure..... The players and coaches in this area stood up and took notice when Coach Meyer showed up to recruit Proctor from Owasso (more or less a suburb of Tulsa). Gundy (From Okie State) was at the school at the same time and even he admitted he was treated like a second class citizen when he was at the school at the same time. Ryan Day does NOT command that type of recruiting presence! These kids (right ,wrong  or indifferent) and their parents and HS coaches rolled out the red carpet for Urban Freakin Meyer (as one of the coaches stated. If Coach Meyer walks away from this program we will hurt from a recruiting standpoint. While no one is bigger than tOSU brand it will take winning at the highest level and sending kids to the No Fun League before any coach will be able to recruit like Meyer!

Ryan Day or any other coach will do OK with the talent that has been assembled but don't make the mistake that it will continue to roll on without some down turns! I just wished that all of this fan base that talks about Lincoln Riley as "the example" and Day an just take over and not miss a beat would just shut up! Riley is in the fight of his life on the recruiting front and was successful with Stoops recruits. Another 2 years and you will see OU fall off of the national scene! We are watching it happen as we speak!

Head Coaches like Coach Meyer are generational and don't come around that often! Coach if you are reading this Please, Please return for another year or five. You are really close to this year and we love you!

You never get a second chance to make the first impression
