Shitcan Schiano, Grinch, Davis, and T. Johnson.  Larry Johnson is a proven commodity; he should be retained. The rest can go coach D3 teams.

Grinch, to me, is the worst of the staff. His safeties have actually regressed throughout 2018. They were bad in September and they're horrible in November. I saw Fuller and White square up more than once today and whiff. His entire room is a clinic on how not to tackle, which is the most fundamental element of playing defense, and they take abysmal angles. They get lost in coverage and the get blown out of the hole. The linebackers take a beating on here, as well they should, but the safeties are the most embarrassing unit on that side of the ball, and Grinch is getting paid 800k to oversee that shit show.

HS

Why can’t it be both?  Back 7 as a whole is awful.  Only 1 player will make an nfl roster right now (Fuller) and that’s as a 3rd to 5th round pick.

HS

To clarify, I acknowledge Okudah and Wade as well as White may develop into NFL talent.  sheffield might get drafted but I bet he doesn’t make it.  If Doran Grant can’t make a roster, Sheffield has no shot.  And it’s not like he plays special teams.

I just want to know, why the fuck can people not tackle on our defense? Since Urban has come here, our defense has really struggled with just tackling. It got an improvement I think when Ash was here 2nd year or so and for a couple years it seemed reasonable. But its back to being absolutely shit at tackling again. This is so frustrating to watch.

HS
CC's picture

Since Urban has been here?  Stop.

HS
BuckeyeAsylum's picture

I am not saying he is the direct correlation at all. Just after watching Tressel teams, I don't recall tackling issues being this prolific. There have also been changes in the rules regarding how you can tackle and I understand there have been adjustments in general in regard to this. But the big bookmark for me left scratching my head coincides with him becoming the head coach. Not causation but correlation.

HS
BBQ_Fan's picture

I know it's just an expression, but LJ is not a "commodity" he's at the top of his craft. Lucky to have him here. As a bonus, he seems happy where he is, and is not shopping himself around.

HS

I think Schiano takes the Purdue job after Brohm selects his next destination.

HS
kmp10's picture

Why would Purdue hire Schiano? He's a defensive coach whose unit was just torched by Brohm's team, and he's having an embarrassing year of epic proportions by Ohio State defensive coordinator standards. Brohm has recruited players for two years to fit a particular offense, which is Purdue's thing. Whenever they've been solid it's been predicated on good offense, so they're going to look for a climber and an innovator on that side of the ball. I'm not saying you're wrong about a Schiano hire, but I don't see it there.

When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's

HS
BurdenAOV's picture

I hope he is right with Schiano to Purdue, but I dont see it happening either. I'm not sure if Schiano will get a offer, just hopeful. If he doesnt then we are stuck with him more then likely. I dont see Urban firing him

HS

HS
Chewbucca's picture

I was just flinging poop against the wall for conversation's sake. I don't have any reason to think he would want to go to Purdue or that Purdue would want him other than the "known name" factor that plays into coaching hires. Personally I think it would be cool if Brohm stayed long term and made Purdue a consistently good team again.  Not at all likely, but it would be something different in this day and age.

Going back to Rutgers might sound logical at first, but does anyone know if Schiano has any real desire to go back to Piscataway?  It seems like he has been intent on coaching elsewhere since he left there.

HS
logamaniac's picture

He went to Tampa, then Columbus.  2 jobs in 7 years of coaching is pretty stable.

He wants to be a HC again and his flirtation with UT was an example of that.  As terrible as they’ve been lately it’s still a great job and Rutgers wasn’t an option at the time.  He was born and raised in NJ and his first coaching job was in NJ.  Also his kids are in the dcm area aren’t they?

HS
buckslan's picture

Seems like we'd have a lot of cooks in the secondary kitchen. Chris Ash as Co DC and was our safeties coach in 14-15. Grinch is a Co DC and safeties coach, and Taver Johnson as DB coach. But if he brings back his rugby tackling then I'm all for it. Tackling has been not as good under Schiano.

Id be fine with a new DC, a new LB coach, and a new OL coach. There needs to be a makeover on the coaching staff after this season.

HS
johngobuck's picture

I don't think they are teaching it now.  Ash and the staff that was there under him is now mostly gone.  I've been seeing a lot of head across the body tackling this year and funny thing is they are getting trucked.   It was one of the first things I noticed at the beginning of this year.   Guys putting their heads down not keeping them up, and not putting their heads behind the player's hips.

One of the real strength of rugby tackling (besides less injuries) is that is is safe to practice.   I don't think they are tackling that way anymore.   If they are still teaching rugby tackling then some players need to be benched

Folks. Meyer has been a mess. I know he is battling some issues with the cyst. But the crumbling on the sidelines, the facial expressions in interviews, his actions on the sideline, he is a mess right now. Get the cyst drained again, make some coaching adjustments, come back on fire next year. The guy has been put through the wringer this year, just get through two more games then regroup.

I don’t think he is done yet. I heard him speak down in Columbus, pre Zach Smith mess, the dude was on point and had that fire/swagger. This Zach Smith crap  took its toll. He will regroup, make some coaching changes and be good to go.

HS
btalbert25's picture

When he got suspended I told a friend of mine, welp, looks Urban is gone after this year.  The president should have fired him or did nothing, a suspension just made the university look dumb, and it pissed Meyer off as the university didn't have his back.  This season has been a mess, Urban is a mess, and I think all the wincing and odd behavior, as well as his general apathy he shows toward the team in interviews are his way of setting up an exit for health reasons again.

HS

Replace Schiono and Davis with Ash and Marcus Freeman at UC.

Posted this in another thread. When Rutgers hired Ash, he had a clause in his original contract that if Rutgers received a bowl ban (and or scholarships) from last coaching staff that he would receive an extention.

Well, they did and had to extend him. He will get 1 more year at the very least (imo). If they fire him, they will (and can not afford) to pay him out.

Steps1110's picture

I think the scheme is the biggest issue with this defense.  That falls on Schiano's shoulders.  Linebacker play has been terrible for two years in a row as well.  That falls on the shoulder of Davis.  Replacing both seem s to be the most logical solution to our problems.  If we bring in Ash, what do we do with Grinch?  Ash was the safeties coach.  Do we move Grinch to LB or have Ash coach them?  These are all questions UM will have to answer if he decides to make staff changes.  More than anything, Davis has to go!!!

Steps

HS
tcm1968's picture

Schiano may leave anyway. He seems like he would be a homerun hire for Maryland...

As for other coaches... only guy that needs to go imo is Davis... I just think it creates all kinds of problems when your best man is coaching a position that's been awful. I still think a big part of the problem is the talent but having that personal connection with a coach just seems like a conflict of interest... time to move on..

Listen, Meyer is a great coach. One of the best of this generation. But if he CANNOT coach to the best of his abilities anymore, is it wrong to question his place as the coach of this team? I believe he has gas left in the tank, and that he is better than 95% of any other options, but clearly there are issues that he has done nothing to change.

HS
knoch11's picture

Personally, I only see two coaches that need to go if Urban wants to maintain the trust of the fanbase.

As frustrating as the DB's have been this year, Urban makes a two-year commitment to every coach he brings on staff, so Taver Johnson and Alex Grinch aren't going anywhere.

I understand the frustration with Schiano, but the guy coached two years of elite defense. And now, with a bunch of first year starters (who are not receiving the same level of positional coaching as before) , it's depressing how we're so quick to throw him under the bus.

Stud and Davis have to go, though. The O-Line has regressed every year since Warriner left, and Stud was supposed to make up for his less elite coaching skills with better recruiting than his predecessor. Needless to say, I'm not impressed enough with his recruiting hauls to make me happier than when Ed was turning 2-4* prospects into All-Americans. Davis should never have been hired in the first place, and Jerome Baker going from a first round talent that couldn't declare in 2016, to a "project player" in the eyes of NFL scouts in 2017 summarizes his level of ineptitude perfectly.

HS

Grinch did a great job last year at Wash St.Hard to get talent out that way.We lost Tyquan Lewis( 2nd rd),Sam Hubbard(3rd rd),Jalyn Holmes(4th rd),Trace Sprinkle,Michael Hill(both free agents) off of the defensive line(not to mention Nick Bosa).Defensive backs Denzel Ward,Damon Webb,Erik Wright.Linebackers Jerome Baker,Chris Worley.Think of that depth lost - the program didn't recover specially the D-Line that was the deepest that I've ever seen coupled with this years starters. All those guys are on NFL rosters except Erik Smith - think about that.5 lineman,2 starting lbs & 2 starting db's - gone. That defense habitually gave the ball back to the offense with Billy Price and J.Jones still blocking.Haskins would look real good with all that help

Under Grinch's guidance, Washington State finished 74th or better nationally in scoring defense all three seasons. The Cougars were 56th this season. In the three seasons prior to his arrival, Washington State never finished better than 97th nationally and was 117th in scoring defense the year before he came.

The Cougars also ranked fourth nationally in third-down defense last season and had forced 75 turnovers during the past three seasons compared to 59 over the three seasons before Grinch joined Mike Leach in Pullman.

We are thin talent wise compared to previous seasons.I'd like to see Grinch have free reign like he did in Pullman.None of this Co-coordinator BS.People on this board were not crying rivers when Ash left.Nothing against Ash it's just people have feeble memories. If you have talent that will cover a lot of miscues
