Going for 2?
Yeah they did :P I will say this, If ever there was a season with reason to do a major shake up on the defensive coaching staff along with our OL coach, well this is the season. If Meyer doesn't do something about this poor performance of the coaches, I am going drive down to Columbus, march into Meyers office and send my size 12 foot straight up in Meyer's ass. This defense has been one of the, or is the flat out worst defense I have ever seen at OSU. And it all comes down to the terrible coaching. How can we have so much talent, yet play so poorly all season and it not be the coaches fault. Just embarrassing this year.
By FAR the worst buckeye D that I can recall in my lifetime.
Urban Meyer >Jim Harbaugh for ever and ever, Amen. 0
You must be young. See 1999.
The ugliest win I've ever seen.
I'm not young (54), and specific to talent relative to effort, this is the worst Ohio State defense of my lifetime. They're a shit show and an embarrassment to the 'Silver Bullets' moniker, and anyone who can't see that is either blind or obtuse.
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
I just wonder why every coach in America, and the peanut gallery forums, are all smarter than Greg Schiano when it comes to strategy. How many times will he line up the line backers in the gap, to have an athlete bounce it outside for an easy big gain/score. How many times do I have to see teams throw at Sheffield on purpose knowing he can't cover? I listened on the radio today because I was at work. So I didn't see the over pursuit taken advantage of that Keels spoke of. I am sure I will.
You and the other whiners dont know a fraction of what Schiano knows.
You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.
That's never been disputed, at least by me, but it doesn't change the fact that his defense is a shit show.
Sheff had great coverage, and even knocked the ball out. Sometimes the ball just just doesn't bounce in your favor, and twice we had the defense make a great play only for the ball to end up in Maryland's possession in the endzone.
We were -2 in turnovers (which wound up being a 14 point swing), gave up a fake fg, 400+yds rushing, and we still won.
Just be happy, idiots! This team made an incredible comeback when literally every bounce of the ball went against them. And they still won! If this shit makes you that upset, adjust your priorities.
How do you explain that the ball hasn't bounced in Ohio States favor all year? Could it be Zach Smith Karma?
I see why Seban let Sheffield go.
TG Proud Buckeye alumnus.
I am of similar age (to poster Kmp10 above) and agree but with the qualification that it’s the worst coached DEF at Ohio State I’ve seen in my life. If the players don’t know what to do, or repeatedly show poor technique (11 games into the season) this is due to poor coaching.
they only SILVER BULLETS are Coors Light
I think the effort is there. What is not there is results. I am amazed at how frequently our back 7 look lost or confused pre-snap. It appears our players, after 11 weeks plus a bye, don't get the system/scheme.
They didn't have a bunch of 4 and 5 star recruits...this is unacceptable

This is the worst defense as far back as I can remember and I am 56 years old.
Adjust all those stats for inflation it's about the same. Back then you could actually play defense.
Noon games suck
1999 defense was always on the field because steve belleSORRY could not manufacture 1st downs. That defense was by far better with Nai'el Diggs, Ahmed Plummer, Garry Berry. If our defense in 1999 was as bad as 2018, the 99' team would of been 3-9 rather than 6-6. They beat Drew Brees and the boiler makers that year.
"Life is not about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. THATS HOW WINNING IS DONE!!" - Rocky Ballboa
What surprises me is how the defense gets schemed to one side of the field, including with the other team using motion, and the 3 or 4 guys on the weakside cannot make a play, heck they don't even slow the play down. If the runner has any speed, it's a touchdown. We need to be more evenly balanced across the field, the players on the weakside need to be more physical and stay in their lanes, and the corners need to be more physical against the run. I can't even remember the last time a corner made a tackle in the backfield on a run play.
I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.
Yeah, I've been going to games since the mid-60's and this is the worst defense I've ever seen at OSU; and it isn't even close. If I were Meyer, I'd fire Schiano and Davis before they even get on the plane to head back to Columbus. Grad assistants can do better
~ The Buck Guy
Yeah u&ou fire your staff oThe week of the biggest game of the year. This is why this job pays millions and t is Nt given to any yahoo.
Rutgers fires Ash... Please coXeback sir
Secondary... Stop playing seniority. I have to believe soXe of the young talented DB's could have contributed by now. Too late in the gaXe to put theX in next week for The GaXe.
Arnette... Slot receivers only please. If not just sidelined and used on occasional downs only.
AdjustXents were Xade in the run D. XcFarland is waaaaaay Xore talented than Higdon (breakaway speed).
Indiana is already proving ttun to be vulnerable
And Dwayne was on point in the passing gaXe... Loved how well he ran w/deterXination
(and you can stop looking for Xy Xissed "X's" right now)
we really miss Coach Combs
Eat shit. The Buckeyes dont owe you anything. They are 10-1. Tjere were horrid Wody Hayes seasons, sometimes in a row, Earle Bruce was horrid, Coop couldn't win the big one, and at 10-1, YOU want to put a boot in the ass of a GREAT coach and a fine human being after a win.
And, anyone calling this a 'trash team, can eat shit too.
I am a Buckeye fan, and love my alma mater.
You want to root for another program, feel free.
Have you ever coached? There are games your players, good players, collectively play bad. There are talented teams which just dont click.
The players are barely adults, and busting their asses.
Urban Fucking Meyers is my program's coach, at my school, does not walk on water but is one hell of a coach. He has had less bad seasons that ANY OSU coach, including Tressel. He's one 3 NCs.
Other than Nick Saban, who the hell else you want to coach here?
Is YOUR life so perfect?
Barney Fife lives, and he lives amongst us.
This escalated rather quickly.
We dont make 10 million a year. We all love our Buckeyes. Some folks wear it on their sleeve. They dont deserve to "eat shit". But have another drink.
I agree with EVERYTHING you just listed. But the Defense is still not schemed correctly. It seems they 'fixed' it a bit last week, and went back to the old stuff. That's not a talented team not clicking, that's something else that needs to be addressed
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
They "fixed it a bit last week?" They were up against MSU which has a relatively weak offense. MSU only scored 6 points against Nebraska today who has also struggled defensively this year.
Bro, there is none left, you gulped it all down.
That was subtle.
I have to agree with overall theme of your response, but hope some changes to assistants are made in the offseason.
Wow telling someone eat shit for a honest opinion, since when is it bad to give your opinion on this web site? Eat shit? Showing a little of that adolescent mind. It is ok that you don't agree with someone, but try and be civil and mature about it. If not then just don't comment to it. You make yourself out to be the ass if you don't. Done with it now....
Chic, you can rant all you want but If you cannot see that there is something systematically wrong with this defense and that it resides with the coaches then I don't know what you are watching. Nobody is suggesting getting rid of Meyer but Schiano, Davis, Stud, and possibly Grinch need to be held accountable up to losing their jobs. They either have blown it judging talent or they have blown coaching the players or both. Your loyalty to the school is where it should be but it also should not be blind faith.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
Ok...time to calm down a bit. We are all entitled to our opinions and typically you have good points. However right now telling someone to eat shit for their opinion well...that's not the best move. I get it your mad because you probably feel frustrated with how they played as well. Let's all move on and realize it it Michigan week. We all hate Michigan so let's come together in that fact and beat their sorry asses.
weird flex but okay
At last, Kerry had cracked open his first Red Bull with an impatient delight. And the rest, as they say, was history.
It's not a talented team that's "not clicking." It's mostly the same team as last season that clicked just fine (minus that one game)
The main difference is multiple different faces on the coaching staff.
Right there with you Chic. Spoiled ass bitches in bottom 15% of this base can eat shit. So sick of it. Yet one more season we go into the last week with a chance to win titles and people cry endlessly. Gave you an upvote to offset the cry babies and I will stand right next to you.
Spot on Ghosty and thank you for typing it out! Tired of the entitled, spoiled brat fans that think every offensive play should result in a house call, every defensive stand should result in a three and out, and we should curb stomp every team by 50. Same people will be on here saying how great Urban and this team is after throat punching TTUN next week and the Wildcats in Indy!
Go Buckeyes - FUCK TTUN
The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
Nich sabam and bama would kill us!!! Get realistic! This team on defense is horrible! To bad your homer views can't see that! If I'm am wrong how do you explain all those big plays and giving up so many points? How? Do you think saying we are great fixes anything? Do you think that's what the coaches are telling the pkayers? I get being a fan, but come o pn, watch the games!
Hector m Rivera
Who is this Nick Sabam you speak of?
Spot on. Abysmal angles, tackling techniques, ill-advised schemes and a general lack of mental and physical toughness week after week is no accident.
The game has passed Schiano and the rest of the defensive staff. Heck, even White started to make mistakes this week, which I suspect is the result of being "coached" into bad play, whereas he relied more on his instincts when he was thrown into action after Fuller's targeting call against Nebraska.
Speaking of Fuller, how did he go from being a projected first round draft pick (even an early first round draft pick) in one year to being a fairly bad safety? Is that an accident, too, or is there a wee bit of a coaching gap between Kerry Coombs vs. Tavers/Schiano/Grinch (all three of whom are alleged DB experts first and foremost, believe it or not) just as there is a monumental gap between Luke Fickel and Billy Davis and Greg Schiano.
This is a massive coaching problem, and it goes back to the usual bugaboo of Urban Meyer, who's clearly a fabulous coach except for undue loyalty to hiring and retaining assistant coaches who abuse his friendship while stealing millions of dollars (literally) from the state of Ohio.
I swear, this off season, if Meyer doesn't fire the whole defensive staff, except for Larry Johnson (of course), then Ohio state representatives and governor should introduce legislation that mandates their firing, as well as Meyer's if he fails to get rid of those embarrassing thieves.
Fact is, the Buckeyes have as much defensive talent as ever, but they do not produce anything that remotely resembles results of past Ohio State defenses, none of whom had superior talent on paper, and many (if not most) of whom had inferior talent.
That's no accident. The problem is clear. So... fix it.
If Urban doesn't, it's on him, just as it was on him to get rid of his under-performing offensive coordinators two years ago, which he had the guts to do, and it absolutely made a difference... on offense. Now he needs to follow suit on defense, loyalty be damned.
After all, loyalty cuts two ways, and everyone from Zack Smith to Greg Schiano to Billy Davis have absolutely taken advantage of Meyer. If those guys are his friends... wow.
remember a few years ago when our LBs couldn't tackle, and Urbz pulled Zack Boren out of the Offensive backfield and had him play linebacker.
We need some kind of spark like that, now. Maybe Rashad Berry could do it?
I know, I'm just dreamin'. But something needs to happen.
I will, however, predict that we will see a different Buckeye team next week, on both sides of the ball, and we'll beat *ichigan again. Say, 38-27.
Please St. Anthony!
I hope you're right Ole Buck, and despite the lapses of this team, it wouldn't surprise me at all if this was the game that they finally put it all together.
At this point, honestly demands that I admit that on eh defensive side of the ball, I'd be at least a little surprised to see them not give up big pays, even if they make some big plays of their own. Thing is, Michigan State is about the only team to whom we didn't give big plays, and that was thanks to a combination of great field position and, oh, yeah--Michigan State has a bad offense, and even at their best, they're playing a ball control game vs. making big plays.
I'm afraid it's getting hard for me to believe that tackling, angles, and scheme can be fixed overnight, and the fact that Schiano keeps saying that he thinks this defense is really close to being as excellent as teams of the past--and worse, he actually seems to believe it (and he even foolishly preaches this to his players, thereby helping to make them delusional)--well, it's downright scary.
That said, they still have enough talent to do... enough to beat TTUN (assuming our O brings its A game).
I am still not sure why they got a pac-12 guy to replace the genius Kerry Coombs
Geez, Extramedium, I thought everyone knew that if you need to boost your fortunes on defense, the first and most obvious "got to" place you'll find them is Washington State, especially when they're Mike Leach castaways. Plus, Grinch is a hometown Ohio guy, and you can see the pride by which he goes about his business.
I mean, geez, when you think about it, he's so darned good that he doesn't even have to prove it to opposing offenses.
After all, heck, he can let up 51 points without blinking and still come out on top, which has to do wonders for his ego, and that of his defense. (His big-time salary doesn't hurt, either).
To that end, I'm yet to see a drop of shame coming from the defensive staff. Not a single molecule of a awareness that they just might not be up to snuff
That is, beyond giving mere nods (with slight smirks) to annoying amateur journalists who dcan't the depths of their football wisdom, they've routinely defended their indefensible defense and actually state-week after week--that they're oh-so "close" to Ohio State's traditional standard of tough and stingy excellence.
Oh boy we got a twitter finger gangster.
I think anyone in their right mind would. The only amazing part was that it didn't work.
Ignorance isn't bliss for the rest of us.
I disagree. Canada should have played it smart like Meyer did at the end of regulation. While there is a chance to compete, you give your team more plays to do it. Don't put the game all onto one play. Maryland's offense was unstoppable by that pathetic excuse for a Buckeyes defense. I'd let them have more than one play to win it with.
Wrong Buck. Absolutely the right call!!! And dude was wide open!!!!
Agree to disagree. But as a coach, if my offense is beating the shit out a defense, and the opponent offense is struggling and we're in overtime, I'm taking it into another OT because my team has the advantage. I would only roll the dice on a single play if I were worried the opponent defense might stop me in another OT. Anything can happen in just one play; better to give them the most opportunities to win it
Yup..the only reason we won is because they got into that "we have nothing to lose" mentality. I'll concede that that mentality got them to that point in the first place, but when you've played so hard and have Ohio state tied in overtime, you need to play smart and finish it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they got stupid at the end, but a very small part of me feels bad for the kids. Like a molecule on my big toe.
It was WIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! open because Fuller and Werner took the same man on the pick. Don't know which of them blew the coverage but it was BLOWN....
Worst linebacker group in my life.... and it's not even close at this point..
That has to be on Werner. He is always out of position
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
And slow. Very slow. very very slow. Very very very slow.
Just rewatched. It was on Werner. When the pick came he should have switched coverage the way Fuller did. Werner left his man WIDE open... not surprising...
I saw Keondre Jones on the field a few plays @LB. I wonder what Werner does that Jones does not do in practice that keeps Werner on the field?
Also can’t tackle consistently
Their right tackle #58 was downfield illegally on that 2 pt. conversion. He was as deep as the intended receiver. Another missed call by the refs.
That’s it Bux. Blame the ref on 51 points. That’s a dumb comment to a poorly played defensive game
Who blamed the refs/. It was an observation.
Who blamed the refs? The poster who was complaining about 58 being downfield
That is not blaming them for Buckeyes D woes, it is an observation on onenplay. Both could be true anyway. The problem is with your choice of the verb “blame.”
#58 was lined up at tight end on that play.
The is ineligible downfield and OPI. Ineligible numbers can never report in as eligible in NCAA. I’m a former NCAA referee.
Off the May tweet you'll want to dispute. Anyway, it's about the play--the game ending play--not an agenda.
Spielman, Laurinaitis, Gradishar, Cousineau, Tovar, Katzenmoyer, AJ Hawk, Marek, Wilhelm, and Pepper Johnson are sick and embarrassed watching this LB group.
I must say, this was a very entertaining game to watch. It was non stop action. An unbiased observers dream. Too bad I was pissed the whole game..
Too bad I was pissed the whole game..
Me too. I started the game almost 2 hours late and had to ffwd to live because I couldn’t take it any longer. But I’m glad that I continued watching because there was a point where I almost walked away and missed the end of the game and the come back. I will never understand why my wife likes to come down to our basement family room to sleep while I’m watching games and then gets mad when I’m yelling at the TV. I’m like, you know there’s a game on and I get mad. Who’s fault is that now?
"There was a point where I almost walked away and missed the end of the game and the come back."
You think that's bad. I was at the game and left midway through the 1st quarter and just logged in a few minutes ago to find out we won. To be fair, I was going to have to leave at halftime to catch a flight, but I saw about all I needed to see when the score was 17-3. Glad we won. Also glad I didn't sit through that gut wrenching game. I might not have survived it.
My mother stopped watching the game in the 4th quarter and when I called her, she didn't believe that we won 52-51...in OT.
Mine texted me to inform me she'd given up early in the second quarter lol
With all due respect to your wife, that's a clear personal foul on her part. If I were a marriage ref, I'd not only give her a 15 yards distance penalty, I'd flag her with an "Entertainment Targeting" call so that she had to sit out the rest of the game you're watching, and then at least the first half of the next game.
I mean, if she's not ready to play, she's got no business stepping onto the field.
That is AWESOME!!! Thanks for that KBonay
What just happened?
There's no points for second place, gentlemen.
I think I died a few times during the course of events
we won brother!
Fields of Dreams
Ohio State won, 52-51.
Doesn’t feel like it.
then you haven’t experienced Buckeye Miracles
“Save yourself and relax during every game. I recommend a fine bourbon.”
Miracles happen against equal or superior opponents. (e.g., Miami in ‘03; Bama in ‘14)
Not a miracle, Brent. All skill.
The Terps pissed that game away at the end. Buckeyes were lucky to survive.
How about we about pissed it away???? Fake punt from 50 and you’re not in punt safe?? That’s the dumbest move ALL DAY LONG. I even told my wife before that “we need to be in punt safe. Just get the ball back”
Urban looks ill. Always rubbing his forehead, bent over, looking down at the ground rubbing his hair, throwing off his headset, not talking to anyone, walking randomly up and down the sidelines. Something is off with the guy. He should take care of his health first.
Are you kidding? He looked less sick than ever this game. He looked PISSED, which he had every reason to be. But he was more animated and more into it than I'd seen him all season.
Lol, I was saying that to my wife earlier too when I seen all of OSU's players turn their backs on the kicker on a series before he kicked it. Was yelling watch the fake punt after that then pooooooooooof, it happened.
Survive and advance, I guess...
Priority #1: Beat Michigan
Exactly. Now, Beat Xichigan. Nothing else matters.
We got a win by 1 in overtime. 5 - 5 Maryland should not score so easy. We are looking at next year because our defensive scheme is we will out score you.
The defensive was flat out embarrassing again
There's no advancing after that. This is not a top 10 team
Did you see Oklahoma last week?
Seattle Buckeye, Green Tony
Yep. Sadly, the Sooners would boat race this Buckeyes team though
Oklahoma played a damn good OK St team. We played a team that is in total chaos right now. BIG difference
We played a team with a good offense in their last home game, vs Ohio State, vs their hometown guy Dwayne Haskins, pulling out all the bullshit trick plays out of their ass. I concede our defense was woefully unprepared and it shouldn't have ever been that close but let's not act like it was Rutgers.
I agree, XM. This was set up to be a big upset. Maryland was in their final home game, senior day, feelin' all "us against the world", no one gave them a chance, etc. etc. They had some good games. Just ask Tom Herman.
So, week before The Game? I'll take it.
Extra. - trick plays??? Two trick plays. 2 80 yard runs, an untouched 20 yard TD run and 2 50 yard passes are trick plays? Seriously??
Great game by Haskins and Dobbins.
This is the worst defense I’ve ever seen at OSU.
Feed the trolls
when 40 seconds is more than enough for a team to march down to set up a potential buzzer beater, i will agree with you every day and twice on sunday.
What about year?? Yeah you are right.
Not great for Haskins or Dobbins considering their turn-overs that helped Maryland lead the entire game. Luckily this game was against Maryland's back-up QB and banged-up RB. Buckeyes still should've lost this one though, if Canada would have taken it to another OT instead of rolling the dice on a single 2 point play
These two kids played outstanding. Turnovers are part of the game and only turned into 7 points. Hell even the turnovers themselves weren’t terrible; 1 tipped pass, one running into your own guy and one lunging for yards.
Dont try to take away from what these two guys did.
Don't try to piss down my back and tell me it's raining either. You're overlooking some serious miscues if you just ignore those turnovers, and the fact that instead of scoring points for, they scored points against the Buckeyes. I'm not denigrating Haskins or Dobbins capabilities; but this was not a great game with those turnovers included
28/38 405 3 TD 1 INT 3 rushing TD
37 for 203 1 TD
Really Buck? You need to hit the bottle tonight
Haskins is a 4th quarter juggernaut. The WRs were solid today too. Can’t take for granted how much that unit has improved since last season.
"Because we couldn't go for three"
What did I just watch. LOL wow. Hell of a game.
Haskins is good at football
"The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish" - Charlie Chaplin
He is what you might call a capable quarterback.
Greg Schiano and most of the staff need to endorse their checks from the university over to Dwayne Haskins
Insanity per Einstein and our defense: Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
I said that same thing during the game in regards to our running between the tackles on 1st down about 10 times in a row, for a grand total of about two yards.
My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom. - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)
Einstein never said that, nor is it the definition of insanity.
It is a definition of stubborn stupidity though. I suspect Schiano enjoys bashing his head against a brick wall for fun.
Einstein never saw this defense. At times it defies gravity and probably resembles a black hole. And I am not sure time travel could fix it.
Nobody on defense is
That game is what came to mind when they decided to go for 2!
Once a Buckeye, Always a Buckeye
We are the worst good team ever. Hahaha
There's something WRONG with us...something VERY VERY wrong with us!
I feel there should be an '*' in there
Tim Beck never gave up 51 points against Maryland
Better to be lucky than good. Cause we aren’t good.
And your Kermit picture fits this comment perfect. +1
Cocaine is a hell of a drug...
A gentle reminder to BE NICE. Plays guitar and makes iced tea in the winter.
WTH.. i replied to skinnytrees just above you knars
Same here. Weird
We certainly were not lucky. Maryland got every break/bounce that game had.
I told the Mrs. that after the fumble into the end zone for a TD
And of course the fumble by Pigromme bounced right back into his arms. I was just numb to whatever happened after that point.
like my golf game
Critical turnovers and some really bad penalties, otherwise we would have won this handily IMO. Even with the terrible run-defense.
Handily? We didn’t have a lead until OT. And those 2 things are the same old bullshit excuses every week.
We just gotta get better, keep working, .....
This is how out LB's used to play. Read play, react.
#23 is Tyvis Powell, a safety
Powell made the tackle because Perry, the Sam LB, forced the RPO to the outside by being in position and containing instead of shooting the wrong gap. The defense today just got gashed by inside zone to the boundary over and over and over and over and over again.
Thank you. It wasn’t about who made the tackle but being in position to force play to where the D was set up.
Oh my God, could you imagine this defense playing against that Oregon offense
^ best post ever ^
This is just the wrong #take.
Receiver was wide open on 2 pt try. QB had a bad throw. Luckeyes win.
Maryland got every break/bounce that game had.
Luck tends to favor teams who play well.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Oh, and Maryland also benefitted from a lot of Buckeye stupidity too. Like walking linebackers up to the line who can’t shed blocks leaving a single safety to make a tackle in space on a ball carrier at full speed. If that counts as luck, then yes, Maryland was lucky.
They even won the coin toss for overtime
Agreed! Lucky thy name was Maryland! That said, hopefully defensive play improves.
We are literally coming up on the last game of the regular season still talking about "I hope the defense improves." Good lord
We’re not lucky either, it doesn’t make any sense to me how this team is 10-1 but I’ll take it any day of the week.
Better to be lucky than good. Cause we aren’t good.
I hear ya. Yet, 10-1 in B1G does say good.
The problem is that small g good isn't sufficient at OSU. With the talented players and highly paid coaches, this team should be very good to great. But there are weak links . . . including minds not being right.
My only regret is that I have only one upvote to give.
"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
Well, Beck was an OC...so that is a given /s
I must be missing something because of all the upvotes but what does Tim Beck have to do with the defense giving up 51? I need another drink maybe
Make it a double.
Beat Michigan,Beat Northwestern, pray like hell that the committee keeps this shitty team out of the playoffs.
I don’t care if we lose to Bama by 100, as long as we beat Michigan
"I love football. I think its the most wonderful game in the world and I despise to lose" - Woody Hayes
^This! So much this!
So true. Win out, let Oklahoma get embarrassed. Go win the Rose Bowl.
Edit-this is reply to BrutusB
Hahahahahahahahaha so many upvotes need to happen here.
God. The playoffs would mean dog death beating.
No... 77-70 is still a win.
They can win out and there is no way the committee puts them in the top 4 except with a major catostrophe by the 9 teams in front of them. Games like today do not make them attractive for Playoffs imho.
As I said just above, 77-70 is still a win and would be so much fun to watch. I think we make it, set good offense records and bad defensive records on the way to Urban's #4.
And keep everyone on staff. If it ain't broke..
Maybe, but if we win out the size of the Buckeye fan base (and their potential TV ratings) will make the committee overlook the ugly and ask us to the prom anyway.
"Bring back St John"
I think they could hang in a shootout with pretty much anybody. That's what it would take because the defense is hopeless at this point. Its to the point that I just cackle as mediocre RB's gallop down the field against them.
That Maryland running back is not mediocre. Just like Saquan in 15’, we just put dude on the map
Unfortunately I can only upvote you once.
The juice is worth the squeeze
Happy for the win, but absolutely aghast at our defense
"porque las estirpes condenadas a cien años de soledad no tenían una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra."
What defense? I think they missed the bus, in more ways than one.... Beat TTUN.
Just keep going. Everybody gets better if they keep at it...
Need to go back to basic defense.
That's what she said.
Werner and Borland just don’t play well. Why can’t We try some other guys - so frustrating to watch
Wrong take on both Werner and Borland. You need to watch those big plays again. Chase Young wasn't containing the outside and got blocked inside every time. And of course the Safeties were of no help. Werner, Borland and Harrison all played much better than the DEs and the DBs
Not sure I’m happy. The wins help mask the problem and keep the same bullshit coaches here.
You think a loss would have brought about changes? I sure don't. Might as well take the W
You’re right. If 30 point losses to bad teams don’t create necessary changes, nothing will.
If you think anyone's getting fired mid-season you're crazy. But hopefully they happen in the off-season.
sounds a lot like 'gashed'
"The future is bright at Ohio State." - Urban Meyer 1/1/15
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Oh, Linda! UV forever.
OSU lucked into that Win, after tons of errors.
I’m apprehensive about hosting TUN next Saturday.
Apprehensive? Ha, should be petrified. This team and coaching staff is about to get destroyed, unless something nearing a miracle happens
You want to talk about luck? Maryland had every single bounce and bad call go their way.
Still inexcusable on defense, but without all that luck on their part we'd have won by 2-3 scores.
Extra - can you share some of those good drugs please? It was 17-3 “punched in the mouth” lead before we even worked a sweat up.
Schiano needs to go. Now.
"Year for what?"
Coaches suck but at some point we need to come to the conclusion we don’t have the players on defense either.
We dont have the talent to hold Maryland under 50. Right.
Tough to always blame the players when there have been dozens of long runs against us this year where there isn't even a player in the vicinity of the gap. Makes me think the schemes being called are faulty if the players aren't even placed in a position to make a play. Yes, we've missed some tackles this year but that happens with every team and we've had that happen in the past. Never seen these schemes where the opposing RB hits a hole and nobody is in the area until recently.
Yeah, I'd argue the run defense has taken a hit this year with Bosa out and everything but when their receivers are *this* open and are catching 50/50's against our guys, I tend to argue it's a scheme/coaching problem. So yeah, someone needs fired.
"If we worked half as hard as our band, we'd be champions."
It’s not scheme Bean. Go watch the game again and the season. Dozens and dozens and dozens of missed tackles at the LOS or within 5 yards.
Did Schiano make Arnette drift inside? Could be coaching, could more easily be Arnette not even tracking McFarland.
Correction: our coaches haven't developed the players. We have a roster full of blue chip talent other coaches dream of. Giving up 50 points regularly to middle-of-the-road teams is fine if you're Texas tech, if it's happening with Ohio States players, that's on the coaches.
I would definitely blow up the defensive staff but do we really thing Schiano forgot how to coach over night. I just think there is a bigger problem on that side of the ball then our coaches suck.
I don't think that Schiano was EVER good. He benefited from some great assistants; who have moved on while Meyer brought in his buddy pals who can't coach
He made Rutgers relevant. The entire fan base was saying what a great coach he was during the Vols incident.
Yeah we were. He could be head coaching Tennessee instead of refusing to make any changes to our defense this year and giving up 50 to Maryland if only they listened to us.
And who’s job is it to recruit the players.
Disagree. We have plenty of horses. Just unacceptable scheme and coaching.
I almost kicked the TV when the commentators started talking in the 4th quarter about how Schiano is one of the best defensive coaches in the country as we were getting killed offensively by Maryland. Our defense has gotten worse each year under Schiano. Time to purge the defensive coaching staff besides LJ.
Great coaches make in-game adjustments. Not wait until halftime. Schiano is just to stubborn to make the changes to fit our talent. INstead, he keeps putting the LB's in the D-line's way.
The sideline reporter even said Maryland's coach said he planned to keep attacking the boundary in the second half because he couldn't believe OSU never made any adjustments in the first half. It's embarrassing. Malik Harrison was running the wrong way on every boundary play for the entire first half.
He was playing his assignment. Chase Young was responsible to contain the outside there and got blocked inside every time
You are 100% incorrect. Maryland kept overloading the field side with trips plus an ineligible blocking tight end, causing us to shift our linebackers and play Tuf outside the box. When we did this Malik was shifted over the center and the only linebacker in the box. Maryland simply kept running a zone blocking scheme to the boundary with full flow from the backfield. There was never any indication of a run to the field and yet Malik continuously attempted to attack to the field side of the center. There were two plays where no one ever needed to block him. This left white on an island to stop a play Malik should have easily filled. He has to be able to read his keys, and he routinely failed to do so.
That's right, but it looked like Malik was playing according to the scheme since Young was outside of him on each of those plays. Looked to me that it was more of Young's failed assignment than anything to do with Malik
I feel no matter what happens on Saturday Osu will be in the rose bowl
Agreed and I'm fine with that after this game. If we somehow beat ttun then maybe I'll feel differently.
H o r s e s h i t
L u c k
Luck (and many bad calls) is the only reason it was so close. It still shouldn't have even been THAT close, but if anyone had luck on their side it was not us.
Extra - you’ve stated luck a hundred times for the reason the game played out the way it did. You are embarrassing yourself
Beat xichigan !
That was entertaining
DEFENSE WAS LESS THAN IDEAL. How about that offense though?
The O was very clutch today besides the pick 6 and fumbles.
I have no voice left, bring on the hot tea and honey
Um yeah. I have no idea what to say. Glad the Buckeyes won but that was not fun to watch.
I don't even care about the playoffs right now. Let's just beat *ichigan.
This sets up a nice bowl game against LSU and Burrow.
(Yes,no way this team beats TTUN)
First and goal at the five and Arch is getting the ball.
Michigan isn't as good as what they're being hyped to be. I've watched every game of theirs this year. Could go either way
Wait a minute, wait a minute... you mean that after watching every ttun game this year, and watching this Buckeyes team, that you still believe that The Game could go either way? I speachless
Negative. It’s Rose Bowl unless Michigan losses in the BIG championship game.
Can this Buckeye team win an 11th game?
Even in a bowl game?
Glad we won but no way should we have won. Our D is horrible.
Holy cow! I don’t know what to say about that game! Survive and advance. Defense was absolutely awful but hats off to Dwayne Haskins and the offense for finding a way to get a victory!
On to THE GAME!
don’t care. all smiles. keep swinging. go bucks.
Our Defense is a joke
Why did Teague not play? He was on the travel roster.
Im happy we won but immeasurably angry about giving up 51 points.
because Dobbins stomped his way to 200+ and McCall got us what we needed when called upon.
We’re gonna redshirt him, so he can play 1 year, then go to the NFL.
He needs three years, not two.
Yeah, he will sit behind Dobbins next year.
Redshirt year 1, contribute some year 2, solid/breakout year 3, NFL year 4.
Going to enjoy this win. Then I will prepare for the 500 rushing yards Michigan will put on this defense next week.
Of course the intended receiver had no one within 3 yards when the pass was thrown. With the exception of Larry Johnson I'd be fine with leaving the whole defensive staff in Maryland.
They're all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.
Yeah, I've already set aside the whiskey and painkillers I'll scarf down next Saturday. I really could hardly stop myself from wasting them today, but I'm glad I had the self-control to hold-off
They have no backs with the speed of that Maryland kid
I thought the same thing, holy hell that guy is fast!
Caught myself whining, "why aren't our guys that fast?!"...........I don't think TTUN has that level of rushing speed either. Next week we outscore them, after some second half adjustments, 38-27. Go Bucks!!
Enjoy the wins over *ichigan, ....I still remember the dark days of the 1990's....
Can't convince me that they have any with the speed of me. Except for Sheffield, and he is usually so far from the play as to be irrelevant.
Lucky the wide out was open
RT#58 was a yard in the end zone on that last play. I was screaming at the official through the TV but he had his finger in his ass.
Yeah, very clear and holding too. I must not know the rules, but he as deep as anyone else eligible for that pass.
Loved to see McCall getting some action, and making a difference. Kid needs to play more!
New job or not, you have to fire Schiano after the season. Have to.
But he's Meyer's friend.
I think he needs to go now.
My liver hates this season.
I had my first beer in OT. It was the beer.
I'm going to need you to pregame next week then lol
I poured my first drink when OT started too. Elijah Craig Cask Strength
What time was the game over there?
Kept updates on my phone while doing Honey Do List. Glad for the HDL today. So is my wife. No let's take care of TTUN.
I always enjoy winning. I’m gonna savor this one because I fear it may our last of the season.
Read my entire screen name....
Something major needs to change. We should not be losing to the likes of Purdue and just scraping by against the likes of Maryland and Nebraska
Our Honor Defend
We've needed something major since 2016 Clemson. Don't keep your hopes up
yes, something needs to change. Optimistic Buck needs to change his name!
51 points to the 98th ranked offense. Meyer should send Maryland’s playcallers flower for throwing it on the 2 pt attempt, and a thank you note to the QB for whiffing.
For the first time in my Buckeye fandom life, I’m not looking forward to The Game. Expecting a bloodbath.
Just win baby. Alive to win next week and head to Indy to take on Pat the Cat.
TTUN week is now officially here. Beat _ichigan

"Adequately achieving on 40% brawn, 40% Bourbon, and 20% good looks, is over achieving."
That guy was wide open. I will try to be optimistic but next week might be terrible. Our defense looked terrible along with turnovers and penalties.
It was all luck and poor officiating. You didn’t realize that? Read this entire thread.
That was the Haskins/Dobbins show. That defense, though. My goodness, they are bad.
But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. So much darker. And so much madder. And so much better. -Dr. Who, "Love and Monsters"
Shoutout to JK Dobbins worked his ass off
Man ... the LBs are terrible, the Safeties literally have to clean up their constant mistakes. Also..... Damon Arnette & Sheffield? Just have to admit both of them SUCK , the O-Line sucked outside of Munford , Greg Schiano & Grinch have to go , anybody know any good Defense Cordinators that run 4-3?
So you can shit can the NFL talk for Sheffield and Arnette. Unfortunately that means they are back here. If they play as much as or more than Okudah and Wade at CB next year, I’m done with Ohio State football for good.
We've known for years that Arnette isn't very good and we've known for 2 seasons that Sheffield is also a liability. Wouldn't hurt to play wade and Okudah on the boundary as much as possible and maybe let Riep play some slot
I try not to be too critical of the players and blame most on the coaching. And try not to at least be disrespectful to the players. But Arnette is not a smart football player and I’ve been saying this for a while now.
Look on the bright side, at least we have made it to the overlap part of the schedules and we can watch the Basketbucks to lift up our spirits.
We held the freshman RB under 300 , yeah
"If you take it to em and you keep takin it to em , hell there's no question whose gonna win" W.W.H
Hey, he is a redshirt freshman! If he had been a true freshman I doubt he would have had more than 200 yards.
Much like everyone else, I never doubted this team for a second.
Even on the internet you can tell when someone is lying.
Justice delayed is justice denied....#FTP
Make Greg Schiano, Bill Davis, and Taver Johnson walk the fuck back to Columbus. Absolute embarrassment.
Also, thank goodness for Dwayne. He had his struggles, but he has some balls.
Also also, can we PLEASE play NPF over Prince? PLEASE?
I swear Isaiah Prince has a false start only on third and short, at least once a game
Tate must be pretty cheesed off for the second week in a row. The O line gets the yips when he lines up.
Fire every D coach except L.J. Sr....yeah even Grinich...safeties suck too
^^^^ THIS ^^^^ x 1,000
Awful D - another game where we came out asleep
we never got better this year- maybe worse
Maryland’s QB missed a guy WIDE open for the win on the 2pt conversion. Poor bastards never gonna live that down.
I’m at the acceptance stage of grief for our defense. Let’s just please find a way to beat Michigan...
Maryland lost the game. Buckeyes got lucky. don't get me wrong, success in life comes down to luck, a lot of the times. But the defensive lapses that has occurred all season is still happening...the same ones...over...and...over...again. This is coaching.
it's time to get a new defensive coaching staff in for next season. Except perhaps Larry Johnson.
And Maryland also got lucky with the gifted turnovers especially that one at the 1 yard line
More like we won the game in spite of being unlucky all game long. Maryland lost the game even though they literally got every bounce. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we're good or anything but to say we were lucky is a stretch to say the least.
it's time to get a new defensive coaching staff in for next season. Except perhaps Larry Johnson.
Remember that Urban has never fired a coach ... until this year (Smith), and that was forced upon him. Can Urban change his stripes?
Haskins can ball.
I wish the defense could, too.
Also Michigan fans are going to go into the game incredibly confident. Let’s pray the Buckeyes can take them down and shatter Michigan dreams again
I can’t believe this defense and its staff want to waste the greatest quarterback talent this school has seen.
When are teams going to learn that there is cosmic justice in favor of the Buckeyes whenever the opponent wants to run a 2 point conversion for the win? It never works.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
We knew he had a strong arm, but today he finally played with toughness & heart. This was Dwayne's most impressive game thus far, to me. Kudos to him.
He played with heart today
IT’S OFFICIALLY HATE WEEK EVERYBODY!
It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.
I got nothing.
"We are eternal. All this pain is an illusion." - Tool
Maybe the defensive staff's plan was to give Michigan too much to plan for, too many plays that will work? They'll be exhausted from watching big plays and designing 40+ yard playcalls.
JUST WIN BABY!!!
Got to love the rhetorical poll question..Dwayne "Motherloving Train" Haskins saved this team from one of the most despicable losses in OSU history.
Holy shit, this feels like vanilla sky..
Feels like I’m dreaming lol
Gonna be honest here. This is one of the worst 10-1 teams in a power 5 conference I can remember but in the immortal words of Al Davis, just win baby. The eternal optimist in me says we will somehow get our shitty, burning trainwreck of a defense magically fixed by next weekend. And oh yeah, fuck _ichigan.
hyperlink this game the definition of “winning ugly”
It was public and known by everyone that the terps were going to use a backup qb, so our defensive brain trust thinks the best plan of attack is to let them run all over us?
michigan state offense must be really really really really bad.
Even Matt Canada was surprised that Ohio State wasn't even trying to make adjustments to the what? Inside zone to the left with MacFarland!
damn. Who and what is this team about? Beat TTUN!
Fortune favors the bold.
Karma hates it when people keep complaining about wins. Go Bucks! Screw the world.
Never place a bet on anything that can talk.
Pretty sure I just lost several years off my life
Life long fan of... The!
Dwayne and JK were amazing
Damn near 700 yards! That's what it took to over come the horrendous defensive play
Need to play next week like we have nothing to lose, because we really don't. Michigan will be coming in fully expecting to wipe us off the field, if that's not motivation for an Urban-led Ohio State team, then frankly nothing is
No they won’t. Not after Indiana played them to the end.
What the most ridiculously dumb thing about all of this is: somehow we will beat ttun next week, win the BTCG, and get into the playoffs and look good doing it. Then we will get murdered by Bama just to be cruel
That's cool. All I care about is beating *ichigan
Don't get Stuck on Stupid
On Maryland's 2 pt. attempt, their right tackle #58 was in the endzone, run blocking and he was downfield ILLEGALLY. Way past 3-5 yds. Should have been a penalty. He was blocking Brendon White who should have come off that block and picked up the open receiver.
My head is spinning trying to absorb what I just saw. And these are the same pair of eyes that witnessed Purdue, Iowa last year, Clemson 2 years ago and all of 2011. This game, while not completely difficult to explain given the trends, is probably the most difficult to decipher considering there was about as much good as there was bad.
Oh yeah, fire Strudwa, Davis and Schiano any time please.
I think I died 3 times during this game.
Can we have these refs for The Game?
I’m a mini van driver in a mega fun world
That defense shows up Saturday Michigan will win by three touchdowns .
Hell of a return by McCall at the end of regulation. And Dwayne is no doubt a baller! Kudos to the O. Really hard to make up for that D.
"The Fanbase that Stole Christmas"
Fire Schiano. Today.
Onward and upward! Go Buckeyes!
Nick Saban would
A picture that says a thousand words (or maybe only 4).
I don’t know what is wrong with this team, but something is way off. So many mental mistakes and consistent lack of execution. The coaching/preparation is bad and I think our players are underperforming. Maybe the talent level isn’t there on D or maybe they just are not playing with any heart or team spirt. I don’t know but not what we expect playing this level of talent.
I think that something is CLEARLY wrong with Meyer, which has been discussed, and it has trickled down to the team. Hopefully, some coaching staff heads roll this offseason.
I think a lot of the problem is that Meyer and his coaches focus on blowing sunshine up these players' asses instead of bustin their balls. A bunch of 5 and 4 star recruits who haven't developed... but their "champions" lol
I am really disappointed in Meyer NOT taking control of this team. As head coach he should immediately bench Werner and Borland and play anyone. Same goes for Pridgeon and Sheffield. If their backups are worse then they all need to transfer. This level of defensive play is not acceptable.
This over and over and over again! Borland and Werner are SLOOOOOOWWWW. Play the best gamers! And McCall is a beast. Get that kid in the game. Pray we beat those weasels up north. Hate them!
Surely the gameplan was not to look as terrible as possible so TTUN would be overconfident? Defense actually held up for a little while in 2nd half, but overall terrible.
Great effort, hats off to Dobbins, Haskins, and Victor for a few tough catches.

Now known as the Silver Marshmallows.
How about just Silver Blanks?
With out massive chaos I don’t see anyway this team makes the playoff. Just going to look like the worst of the 1 loss teams to me.
I know the defense sucks major bollocks, but you have to give Maryland a lot of credit. They didn't score an offensive TD in the 3rd quarter, and I thought the Bucks would pull away then.
Tom Brady lost to John Cooper. Never forget.
You're giving the Buckeyes props for "holding" the Terps without a TD in the 3rd quarter???
This is the team we beat 62-14 last year!!!
Pridgeon should be benched. Over 20 yards in penalties just on him
He and Price are penalty machines.
Don't worry, they'll both grade out as champions...
Not to mention being a total cream puff for his size. The guy simply can't push other human beings. His height may be impressive, but not when he's incapable of getting his pad level below, oh, about 6 feet high or so.
After the second touchdown in the first quarter, I threw my remote at the TV and broke it. The good news is its black friday and tvs are cheap. Thank you Buckeyes, I needed a new tv anyway.
You did the right thing - that TV did nothing but show lousy defense.
Officially *ichigan Week! LET'S GO!!!!
Greg Schiano, Alex Grinch and Bill Davis should fucking walk home. On the bright side, the 2013 Buckeye defense is no longer the worst in Ohio State history. So that's something.
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
I only give Grinch a psss because of all of the early defections and the fact that it’s his first year. I agree re: Schiano and Davis. They continually fail tomout players in position to succeed.
This is the worse defense since I starting watching them in 1968 (as a kid).
After all the distractions we have endured, we are 10-1 with a chance to win the Big Ten. Put everything that has happened behind us and play our best game next week. I feel Urban's pain on the sidelines. The team has so much potential if it can just play 60 minutes without beating themselves.
This season may only have 60 minutes left.
Are we playing so poorly that they won't let us go to a bowl game if we lose to Michigan?
We play for at least a win over Michigan ans a shot at the B10 championship. So no, there is no season left after that. Just trinkets and bullshit.
No need to put these underwear in the wash.. I gotta burn em.
Maybe you can add Urban’s with yours - he was fixing his junk more than a baseball player with a bad cup on.
Just realized that the awful Maryland QB completed 7-14 passes...for 196 FUCKING YARDS. The secondary may actually be worse than the linebackers.
They were today for sure.
I’m happy and relieved that we were able to survive. That said there needs to be some accountability for the defensive failures. This is systemic. The only difference between this game and Purdue was the effectiveness of the offense. Maryland could have ran that play to McFarland all day and we couldn’t stop it.
Maryland could have ran that play to McFarland all day and we couldn’t stop it.
Um, I think they did run that play all day and we never stopped it.
Bad as our D was it was pretty much a mirror image of Oklahoma's game vs Okie St last week.
Don't sweat the CFP.
If by God's grace they win next week and the B1G, there is no way the committee puts them in. Unless...they enjoy seeing Ohio State embarrassed and publicly humiliated again
The officiating was miserable for both teams. Big10 needs to review their contracts. So many glaring wrong calls
Stop!! There was a LOT of bad football played by both sides. There were a dozen holding plays that weren’t called. Bad play makes officiating look bad.
On the 2 point conversion Werner jumped the wrong guy and left his man alone
as usual Werner was out of position
I wish Werner could just be a great special teams player and not a starting linebacker.
I must had seen at least a half dozen players where the LBs took themselves out of the play leaving big gaps for the runner
Yeah, but Meyer says Werner comes from a great famkly. So he's probably cool to talk to at barbecues.
Here’s me piling on... the defense was catastrophic
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Thank God for the Brady Hoke call to go for the 2 point conversion. I don't think I've ever made a post calling for a coach to be fired ... but changes to the defensive coaching staff need to happen. Possibly this weekend IMHO. And I don't "say" that lightly, I'm basically a soft hearted wimp.
The will to win is not as important as the will to prepare to win. -- Woody Hayes
Never ever understand why anyone goes for 2 at the end. It rarely works. Especially when your team fights for 60+ minutes against a top 10 (?) opponent. Why make everything come down to one play when you can give them multiple cracks in 2OT?
That was a gift. At home and consistently moving the ball why go for two. Make the opponent earn it.
You are absolutely right. I read an article on the NCAA website that only 34% of 2 pt. conversions are successful. The conversion rate on extra pt. kicks have to be darn near close to 100%.
Das - then you don’t understand CFB. They weren’t beating us in an OT shootout. We were playing Good run defense
The offense(Especially Haskins & Dobbins)really was great in the clutch. Yes, the turnovers and penalties are partly responsible to how close the game was, but they made the plays when they had to. The defense? Possibly the worse performing group in 25+ years....shocking that this team is 10-1.
If the Bucks could only stop playing these trap games between before their big games they would be much better... this wasn't a trap game was it? Oh well, I'm off to see the heart Doc now... Go Bucks beat TTUN!
Hopefully your heart Doc also has a heart Doc of his own.

That might have been the most frustratingly stressful Buckeye game I've ever watched.
While it was a huge relief that the Buckeyes won, I'm not letting the defensive coaching staff off the hook--routine horrendous angles, persistently terrible tackling techniques and consistently ill-advised schemes that leave opposing players in space while exposing our back seven defenders in isolation--none of that is an accident.
Hey, I'm willing to criticize our players for ta failure to execute, but the nature and extent of these problems is all about the defensive coaches, and I now believe that it's not a kneejerk reaction to say that they all need to be fired.
ALL OF THEM.
I don't care how far they might go in the postseason, assuming there are any playoffs. Heck, if nothing else, there is NO WAY the defensive coaching crew is worth the multi millions of dollars that the taxpayers of Ohio pay them.
After Urban Meyer, they are the highest paid employees in the state. True fact.
So... even from a socio-political-football standpoint, can anybody possibly justify their presence on the sidelines?
By now, isn't it absolutely clear that the game has passed by Sciano, who is among the most clueless assistant coaches in all of college football?
Meanwhile... Kudos On. I can't rag on you guys at all. As small note, I've been calling for one RB carrying the load all season so as to keep him in a rhythm vs. alternating backs. I know Weber didn't play because of an injury, bit I say they should stick with one back, and while I live both RBs, I'd stick with Dobbins.
Spot on CC.
I'm happy with the win of course, but our defense was awful. I don't care right now about the talking heads and the CFP, "The Game" is now ON!! Beat Michigan!!
Doesn’t this feel like 2013 all over again...excepting the fact that this defense never makes big plays?
I feel like it's worse. At least the 2013 team had that blowout win against Penn State and that rock solid, hard-fought win against a tough Wisconsin team.
This team gives up 51 points to a 5-5 team that lost its head coach.
The week after they held Sparty to 6 points. I don't know what the hell is going on
Nebraska just held Sharty to 6 also, so I wouldn't put much stock in that lol.
Agreed, other than the occasional great play by Jones or Young. The pass defense feels very similar, except there's no Bradley Roby on this team. Roby would have a really good chance of leading this team in tackles, and he probably would've prevented a few of the 70+ TDs too.
Gotta love the win. That's the most important thing.
However, something is off. This team seems to be missing something. I'm not sure what it is, but it drives me crazy!
In the end--just win baby!
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
Maybe. Definitely not clicking, especially on defense.
Early prediction Michigan by 17 plus. Do not see this defense getting any kind of stops as Higgdon runs for 150 plus.
That's my worry. We need to be able to stop the run. Make Shea Patterson live up to his hype.
Patterson also runs
Give me OSU and 7 for $100
Offense pretty good except TOs, defense terrible. Lucky Pigrome couldn’t make 2 yard throw to wide open man. Gotta think this sh*tshow gets put behind the team fast to focus on TTUN Week!
Our defense is kind of like Dana Holgorson's hair. Kind of here, kind of there. (Sorry don't know how to add a picture)
Will Higdon best Biakabatuka’s record?
anyone else feel sick with that stat on the longest running plays given up this season?
these four should be benched. Each continuously we’re out of position or did not do their jobs
davis at guard
wade and Okudah at the corners
With Sheffield, I'm not sure I've ever seen a DB who consistently provides tight coverage yet so consistently loses the jump ball. For the longest time, I gave him the benefit of doubt that he was sooooo close and would inevitably start seeing the balls break his way.
It's no accident by now. The guy is a terrific defender except in ONE key area: He simply can't locate that ball, and unfortunately for him, it's an absolutely critical feature of playing CB well.
Sheffield looks like he plays at one speed, he doesn't seem to have an extra gear or provide exceptional effort-type plays. He routinely has trouble getting off of blocks and is not physical enough. He's turned into a "hey ref I got knocked down by the receiver, call offensive pass interference" type of corner. Don't know why he hasn't gotten better. Just my observations.
Oh, I see... so you're actually watching the games, eh?
BTW, you mind handing your glasses to Shavers and Schiano, or as I call them, the "Shhh Squad" owing to their names and silent defenses... oh, and to something else that's putrid and begins with the letters "sh."
how many elite level coaches would allow Schiano & Davis to keep their jobs this long? Absolute garbage and downright embarrassing for anyone associated with OSU football. Hell even Stoops fired his own brother didn’t he?
I think we'd be better off to play 6 defensive lineman and no cornerbacks.
Dear God in Heaven....
There goes style points. OSU coaches need to remind the defense that it's ok to tackle the opposing team's ball carrier.
"We're going to give the ball to dumb-ass and grind meat"--Woody Hayes
The wrong coach went to Tennessee. The Bucks lost all their defensive energy when Kerry Coombs left. You can see it on the field.
This is 100% true.
Say, I've got a crazy idea--invite Coombs back with a raise and the job of defensive coordinator, which will be vacated by... guess poo?
Oops, I mean, guess who?
It's been said a dozen times already, but Schiano needs to go. His unwillingness to make first half adjustments when we're getting smoked is ridiculous. We have starting linebackers that don't make any plays. How does that happen? And how has it been permitted to go on all season? It's almost as ugly as those notre dame striped uniforms.
Canada said during his halftime interview that "We (Maryland) kept running to the short side and Ohio State never adjusted."
What's crazy is Ohio State wins by one point versus a 5-5 team due to poor defense and this will hurt them in the eyes of the playoff committee;
Oklahoma wins by one point versus a 5-5 Oklahoma State team last weak with a poor defensive showing, they're somehow viewed as being on the bubble by the playoff committee;
The difference? Ohio State played on the road, Oklahoma played at home.
I get that outside of Bama and Clemson the committee is going to have to reach, I also don't want to see the Buckeyes in the playoff this year, but still the bias and illogic of the committee is maddening.
Oklahoma is JUST LIKE Ohio State this year! Great offense, poor defense, no chance to win it all outside of serious injury help. Nevertheless here we are. At least Oklahoma's coach had the balls to get rid of his defensive coordinator.
Call me crazy, but if the Buckeyes win out, I absolutely want to see them in the playoffs. Here's the thing:
1) College football is crazy and anything can happen, but more importantly,
2) should they lose, as most experts would predict, and worse, get smoked, this should put the nail in Schiano's coffin that otherwise might not be hammered into the ground if, let's say, the Buckeyes were to play a team like Washington State or West Virginia or a 2 loss Georgia, and they they possibly won the game or at least were close.
In other words, if it's crazy to want them to go to the playoffs, then maybe it's crazy like a fox.
Not sure how you justify bringing back Schiano and Davis...and throw Studwara in there
Teams are seeing exactly what I am at home:. Our corners don't jam the receivers at the line despite playing "press man" and they don't turn to look for the ball - ergo the QBs are throwing up deep 50/50 balls and either getting PI calls or completions more often than not.
Don't even get me started on the linebackers!
Fire every defensive coach except LJ and move on, Urban! Your buddies suck!
Sheffield has given up catch after catch on that same fade down the field.
UH,,,,the same coaches the last three years except for the DB coach that went to the NFL this year. The players are what's different.
I guess the one small consolation is that we are not fans of Wisconsin, MSU, or even Penn State whose seasons have gone way worse than expected. And while it is hard to see a win next week anything can happen and they could really mess with ttun.
You're right. I guess ttun could already be planning their CFP trip, overlooking OSU and NW, the same way the Buckeyes seem to overlook every pissant team on the schedule this season. I'm hoping ttun has 6 turnovers so the Buckeyes have a chance to win it in OT next week.
While I agree that the Defensive Coaches are a big part of the problem it doesn't change the unfortunate fact that most of our defensive players are simply not very good. Yes, we are learning that high school player rankings don't always guarantee superior performance on the field. This defense would have struggled with Bosa, but without him its become a clown show.
I agree with this. Talent is as talent does. Coaches certainly play a critical role, but they don't make plays on the field. The back 7 on this defense simply don't make many dominating plays and I think that is largely due to them not being dominating college talents.
They're obviously not coachable. They make the same mistakes over and over and over again.
That juggernaut called Michigan losing at home almost at the half to Indiana...
This team doesn't deserve the playoffs. We deserve to be ranked 5th and go to the Rose Bowl at best.
Who in the hell wants to see this team in the playoffs. The loss would be more embarrassing then the Clemson loss.
Saw TOSU/Maryland tilt and a Big XII shoot-out ensued.
I am not very smart, but I recognize that I'm not very smart. --- W.W. Hayes
Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong.
I'll take the win and hope we won't have the same fortune next week.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Might as well quit our bitching it is what it is. Pray a lot.
This x 100. We are who we are at this point. I’m not in love with it, but you can’t fire all the coaches mid season. Just make peace with it as best you can then demand change in the off-season because even though we end up no worse than 10-2, because this can’t happen again.
How firm thy friendship
10-3 if we soil the sheets in a bowl game.
Wasn't Werner supposed to switch receivers with Fuller on that last play when Maryland ran a rub route? Both guys went with inside WR going outside leaving WR wide open.
I miss Coach Combs.
The DBs have lost their #RedBullSwagger
Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear, or a fool from any direction.
Maryland interim coach Matt Canada an Indiana University grad and former assistant coach at IU didn't fear" Brutus". The Buckeye prevailed.. Whew!
"Great teams have great character. These are teams that are not distraught that they're down at halftime." - Keith Jackson
I don't care if that was a win...there needs to be a major fucking coaching overhaul. Worst part is we'll see nothing like that occur because "a win is a win".
I'm glad no one is delusional about being considered for the final 4 as we've witnesses the ineptitude of the defense and coaching staff all year. Linebackers are pitiful and Sheffield and Arnette cannot cover. D-line seems OK except for occasionally getting caught out of containment assignments. O-line and tight ends need to stop being drive killers with their constant penalties. Hoping Ash will return to OSU after Rutgers HC fiasco. Our only chance next week: overconfidence on the part of UM and if the planets and stars line up just right; we get lucky with the turn overs.
1. I have never heard of any football team at any level giving up this many long running plays in a season — which tells me that the issue can't possibly be lack of talent.
2. I hope we do the smart thing against TTUN and take the ball on the opening kickoff if we have the chance. Go with your strength! Our one shot next week is to get it into a shootout. Don't give the bad guys the ball first and give them a chance to hit on their own 80-yarder early.
3. Dobbins had a man-sized performance with little rest.
4. On the other hand, the time to bench Pridgeon was in September, but how it's probably too late.
5. Our turnovers were really the factor that kept the game close. If Maryland had ever had to play from behind, their issues throwing and especially pass blocking might have led to a snowball effect. But you have to give them credit for hitting on those big plays late too.
6. I can't believe we bet the entire season on a pass to Rashod Berry.
7. Haskins definitely looked more comfortable running the ball. What they got from him today was what they've needed all season — not his running as a primary weapon, but as a factor that had to be accounted for.
8. Despite not having Weber, this actually might have been the most balanced attack we've had all season.
9. It's hindsight, but I don't think I would have gone for 2 in Maryland's position. I might have been willing to gamble that our red zone issues would pop up again.
10. Michigan still sucks.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
You're absolutely correct on every, single bullet. Wish I had more UVs
Entertaining football. I just shook my head ( hit my head against the wall) on the Terps recovered fumble in the end zone
I don't feel so bad giving up 26 to IU, since TTUN having trouble with them at home. I guess the usual thing happens in sports with the teams that have nothing to lose always play hard. The Bucks and Blue know that next week is important-but it is really NOT important, from the National picture standpoint, if you can't win today. Buckeyes were fortunate to win.
As much as I enjoy watching the wolvies lose ANY TIME of the season, you know our stock goes down for beating them next week, if they lose at home to an "un-ranked" team today.
In other words: "GO HOOSIERS" Let the Playoff committee decide.

Question for all here. Listened to the MD coach's post game and he was asked about how "clearly refs favoring Ohio State in their calls". He refused to answer and while I believe the officiating was sub-par; I will need to watch the 4 hour 'score-athon' again to decide. But I do remember the TV commentators saying there were many missed calls in favor of the Bucks. Anyone agree or have a dissenting opinion?
Missed calls, missed plays, missed opportunities by both refs and teams.
It's football. Overall I think the refs were fair in their penalties.
There were bad calls both ways. Re-watch that fake punt by MD. Their gunner was holding our DB with the Ref right in his face and no flag. If not for that hold, that fake punt fails
I have only rewatched the 2nd half. We were called for PI, though ball uncatchable (announcer said hit camera). Maryland was called for holding, though ball uncatchable. But, it was definitely PI against the Terps, keeping Campbell from the catch.
Will watch the 1st half again later on DVR. I think their coach is just upset that we had about as many fans as they did, just like last week in East Lansing.
If Maryland would have converted that 2-pt attempt it would have been because of the worst missed call of the game. Check out their Right Tackle going 2 1/2 yards downfield and into the end zone to block White. No wonder that receiver was so open.
Check out Maryland go for 2 play, No.58 RT Damian Prince blocking downfield on Ohio State safety Brendon White. No wonder Jeshaun Jones was wide open, but pass was wide. Game over. pic.twitter.com/LtgZ22VdOh

There was also ANOTHER busted coverage on the play. The two slot receivers crossed and both DBs went with one receiver leaving the one completely uncovered. One of the worst thrown short passes I've ever seen. All I can say is....THANK YOU for not calling a run play.
I have yet to see a fan base that wasn't convinced after every game that the refs were favoring the other team.
Pathetic isn’t it???? Every game this board bitches about the refs.
Hell, an Ohio State player can be called for a penalty on every play. The Refs can't do it, there's a TV time limit for a game. We'd be talking about a 6 hour game instead of 4.
No but their last TD drive in regulation was aided by a penalty on Arnette when it looked like the pass was 25 ft out of the end zone.
worse than that contact occurred well before ball was in the air. there was no contact after the ball left the QBs hand.
While acknowledging that these games shouldn’t be close like this, we should at least credit the team for not folding and managing to find a way to win. Not at all trotting out the “did we win” argument because this level of play isn’t acceptable, but give the kids credit for hanging in there and have enough grit to find a way to win.
My blood pressure :(
The offense played fantastic, except for the turnovers which kept MD in the game. Glad to not get the "L", but today's game was just a sad display of wasted talent on this team. I'm sure that the offense see's their defense for what they are, and understand that they really have to score on every offensive series if they hope to win any future games.
Go Bucks! Beat the skunk weasels!
I don’t care what anybody says I’m damn proud of this team and it’s effort today. They could’ve given up and had another Purdue outing or Iowa, but it fought back and kept finding a way to get into the end zone. We could’ve played Citadel but we played Maryland on the road or the week before our actual rivalry game. If you were there today like I was you could see the fight in this team and the way I’ve never gave up and never quit. Just appreciate being 10-1. GO BUCKS!!
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
Bama played Citadel because the SEC is smarter than any conference in the country when it comes to scheduling. Bitch all you want but it’s SMART.
How can it be considered “smart” to schedule an FCS school and TWO Sun Belt teams? Were it any other team/conference it’d be absolutely unacceptable.
I'm not even going to waste my time reading the comments about today's game because I'm guessing the whining and burn it down sentiments only got louder.
For me, we're 10 - 1 and playing for the B1G East Championship game next Saturday against the ugly helmet wearing jackals... so Go Buckeyes and FUCK TTUN.
More McCall please,
Get busy living.
Not a pretty season, lots of frustration and an overload of questions. Yet here we are at 10-1. If OSU beats ichigan by one point, in overtime everyone will be elated. Call it the game of a lifetime.
The summer shit show distraction by Brett McDipshit probably is why the team is having difficulties this year. The loss of N Bosa just added to the mess. I'm sure off season coaching changes will happen. Meyer looked like he was miserable. Prolly due to the illness.
Let's be grateful for the season and the 10-1 record.
The best that can be hoped for is a close win over U of M and Northwestern. THAT 12-1 Big Ten Champion would not be more worthy of a Four Team playoff spot then any 2nd place finisher in the other 4 Power 5 Conferences.
WV just went down so that's another out of the way.
I have to laugh at all the folks on here that think the Bucks have any chance in hell of making the playoff. Yes the team is 10-1, but we got killed by an unranked Purdue team, I was there to witness that debacle. Today we got lucky and beat a piss poor Maryland team. The defense is the worst I have seen in my life. As an alum, I am embarrassed by the coaching and play on defense. I live in the heart of SEC country and half the SEC would kick OSU’s ass. If we played Bama, they could score 100. Every coach on defense needs to go and go right now with the exception of LJ.
Let’s not forget amongst all the perfectly justified handwringing that it’s now officially Michigan week. So sayonara turtles and Beat Michigan!
Michigan is going to destroy OSU. I expect a 30 pt loss so UM sends a statement to the committee. OSUs D is going to give up 50 again next week,
I can't remember a defense with this many problems since I started watching Ohio State football in the early 90s. For all the talent they have and the money these coaches are making, it doesn't make sense. I hope they can find a way to beat Michigan but I wouldn't be surprised if they lose. The defense is not championship caliber and up to the high standards of past silver bullets teams we've enjoyed watching. Now let's find a way to get it together and go beat TTUN!
I've gotta toss in at least one last shot here:
Oh, so Meyer and company discovered that Demario McCall is a kinduva decent open field runner who can run back kickoffs, eh?
I mean, besides millions of Buckeye fans across the nation who aren't paid to notice which players can play and which players can't.
