Ohio State Remains Unbeaten With 69-60 Win Against Creighton

That was such a fun game. Thought it was over when Creighton went on their late run.

Also I think Woods just stole Jackson’s starting spot, though both were clutch at the end.

HS
bsk33's picture

That might have been CJ's worst game in his career (and he has had some bad ones).

That being said, I don't see Holtmann changing things up. Woods seems comfortable coming off the bench. And although he lit it up tonight, he had 9 total pts in the first 2 games.

Holtmann has no problem going with the hot hand and playing match-ups. He also showed faith in CJ and he delivered with two clutch shots.

I think the rotation is fine as is. 3-0, why change it up?

I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.

Maybe. I’ll trust whatever Holtmann wants to do at this point.

HS

I’ll trust whatever Holtmann wants to do at this point.

This is pretty much where I am too. It took some serious faith in the rest of his team to keep K Wesson out for so much of this game.

Classic!  The chaotic ambivalences of the true and false Fanatic!

1] Maybe...

2] I will trust... [literally, contracted by the contraction]

3] whatever...

4] he wants to do [built on the solid foundation of 1,2,&3]...

5/ at this point. [we giveth, hold hostage, and taketh away in the same moment/point]

Ironic and cosmic the distinction between "at this point" and... "win the moment".

One is our coaches telling our players to 'do it now' each 'now'.

The other is a classic [so popular, ref 15 UVs already!]  Die-versity moment - a point of whatever in wherever... already long gone.

HS
ibuck's picture

Holtmann and staff seem to be pretty talented at building confidence in these players. That seems to entail sticking with them even when things are not completely coming together, as long as their effort is good. If that's correct, that's why CJ was able to hit the winning shot and add three more points in the last 3 minutes after disappointing offensively for 26 minutes (CJ played 29 min).

Holtmann's seeming ability to develop players (e.g., Ledee!) by advising them what to expect, telling them how to handle it (for the most part), and giving them opportunities to grow in physical and mental abilities (hoop smarts) and the confidence to succeed (emotionally) may well keep this group of Buckeyes improving all season long.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

IBuck and others:

agree that exploring 'what seems to be' is a start toward recognizing WIGO [what is going on].

some say 'you know you're exploring instead of perceiving when, the more questions you answer... generate more and better questions about what is behind what you just 'answered'.

Question:  DOES Holtmann coach his players as you described in your last paragraph?  Any examples?

It does seem that... "things are not completely coming together"... 'pretty much'... all the time....   ;-{)}

and it does seem... "each day has enough troubles of it own" ... a count to which we humbly... add.   ;-{)}

so it does seems our 'norm' is either recovering or regressing... i mean somewhere along that spectrum; not, 'either/or'.  Which makes seeking/finding/exploiting "The Initiative" is 'outside our normal box'... of 'human nature'.

HS
Buck68's picture

agree there was, and still is, a whole lot of 'snapping' going on!

But only 1, after-the-fact, 'snapped'.

Perhaps this reality of 'many to one', kindly suggests where it would be beneficial to all of us to... explore.

===>and could... it... potentially... be... sorta kinda like... e pluribus unum?

HS
Etenim's picture

If there's a change I'd rather it be Woods starting in place of Andre Wesson.

Whatever it is that Andre Wesson does that captivates Holtmann, I'd rather Holtmann try to get it from him in limited reserve minutes off the bench. The name of the game in college basketball is scoring pressure, and if you're not getting it from all five spots on the floor you simply won't be in the building when the elites of the elite clash for anything worth winning. Playing four against five won't cut it. I know Wesson hit two 3-pointers tonight, but that's a statistical outlier. He's averaged 2.3 and 2.9 his first two seasons, and with tonight's outlier 8 points he's averaging 5.3 in three games. And tonight he got those 8 points in 32 minutes (against his season average of 16 minutes) - more minutes tonight than Jackson, Washington, Muhammad, Young and Jallow.

Andre Wesson is the guy you leave to double his more consistently dangerous scoring teammates. Eventually that's going to hurt in the worst way for a team as the competition becomes elite. I just can't stand when coaches make it this easy for the other team. But even before then, we'll see it hurting sooner, as with the start of tonight's game, when the team fell behind 10 -2 right out of the gate. That's not all Wesson's fault, but simple math tells you that kind of tepid start is far more avoidable when you increase the scoring punch in 20% of your starting lineup.

Maybe someone could sit me down and do some film study with me showing precisely what it is that Holtmann thinks earns Wesson a starting spot, and 32 minutes of action tonight. It could help, but knowing what I know about the importance of scoring pressure against the most elite teams, it wouldn't change my opinion that until Holtmann addresses this, this team won't be able to run with the elites. I thought for certain this was the season talent would force the change, and it is still early, but I just feel like more potent scorers who can actually stress defenses -  and have the mindset to consistently do it - should be in the starting lineup and developing. Because if they aren't, isn't that hurting the team for when the competition really steps up?

HS
Buck68's picture

Entim - for me, a very thought-provoking post, with sub-threads of reasoning.  Rare.

One point of confusion for me:  yes, i "don't know what you know".  So, i struggle finding common bases for understanding, communicating, and comparing.

And i know very little about the mechanics of basketball.  Maybe that's why i like 'so much' Spielman's assertion that  "football [i apply to sports] is 90% mental".   ;-{)}

I did gather several of your points into one question:  what makes you think that a snapshot of what Andre does and does not do on the court now... conclusively address whether... and how... Holtmann is building his team proficiency, tenacity, skill growth... over time, as each individual 'develops'?  You could be way ahead of where Holtmann is building toward with differing lineups... but developing dynamic, ongoing schemes to win while, longer range, preparing for the B1G and NCAA playoffs....

Or given the 'come what may'... 'the development plans individual/scheme/groups' may 'wind up' almost unrecognizable from what we 'thought'... now.

Ain't it grand!  Agree... exciting pitfalls in all directions.  "When you're going through hell... keep going!"   Hmmm...when you're in Heaven... stop!  I suspicion we're not quite in Heaven... yet.   LOL

I figured even with a loss tonight that would be the case.

The fact that they came back to win makes it a confidence booster as well as having some teachable moments.

Kareem... for me, posts like yours are a window into the verdant green meadow of opportunity to consider... what comes to mind.

So...here goes:

Whenever I "can't remember" i am 'so sure'.

Whenever 'they'... 'win for me', i am having fun.

Is "that swag" the very one i so totally have... and they must have exactly like i tell them?  IDK... but i am tempted by every rep i see...

...to be... myself.

I suspicion i would 'do a lot better'... observing these young kids respond in each moment to the multi-faceted situation where they, their teammates, and their coaches... compete.

I just realized every time i 'see something' and 'focus'... i stop seeing... all the rest of WIGO.

Once in a while... while observing... i 'get a glimpse' of the unspeakable wonders of, thru the crucible of the fire, what is to come.  But whenever i 'naturally' 'grab for it'... it is gone.  For the glimpse is a gift for the receiver, and i am a poor and sporadic ...listener.

But... this helps me enjoy and learn from each and every post each of you put here.  So, on the merits, i have no complaint, only gratitude.

There was a stretch there where they made some bad calls.  I think we had 4 fouls called against us on one Creighton possession - they ended up having possession of the ball for almost 2 minutes.  But part of that is because officials will favor an aggressive team over a passive one and that's the same stretch where we were playing very tentatively.  Overall though, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the game @UC where they just flat out missed easy calls.

Another big win for this young team.  It was a really weird game with another slow start but a great end to the first half.  When Creighton started hitting everything they threw up there and started getting some home cooking in the middle of the second half I got worried.  But they kept their poise and just closed the door in the last 4 minutes. All of this with Kaleb on the bench and CJ having probably the worst game he will have all season. Woods was solid all game long and really did a great job keeping us in there when things started to go sideways. And when the team could have folded late they did just the opposite, settled down and just took over.  Great effort to end this one.

Jackson had a rough night but came through big time in the clutch at the end when it counted. Kaleb had a very solid outing that was impactful when he was in. The young guys - Washington, Mohammad, Ledee - you have to love the passion and fearlessness. Young will be the glue for the team. We need his energy. Andre had some important plays at key times. Fortunate to win as Creighton went ice cold down the stretch.

"The Buckeyes held a 12-point lead with 14 minutes remaining, but the Bluejays evened the game up with 9:47 remaining,"

So, in 4 minutes and 13 seconds, a 12-point lead disappears. I thought Holtmann's stubbornness to rotate the lineup was going to cost him the game. He was playing 4 against 5 on the offensive side in the 2nd half as he left Young in until 9:00 minutes left in the game. Young is a good player but he is NOT an offensive threat while Washington, Woods, Luther, and LeeDee were riding the pine. Yes, I know, Young made a couple of buckets down the stretch but he also threw up air balls and missed two clutch free throws in crunch time. He will get better I'm sure, but I'd rather see Washington get more PT.

Saban on a cart eating cold pizza

HS
bucksfan92's picture

I think the lineup was purely situational.  Creighton was playing a bunch of long, rangy, skinny guys who can hit 3s so Holtmann decided to counter that with a smaller but quicker team to make those 3s a bit more contested.  I think the reason they went "ice cold" was 2 fold - fist of all those shots weren't as open as they had been earlier, and second, they spent a ton of energy coming back from a 12 point deficit. Creighton was playing with urgency more minutes than we were and it just caught up with them.  Our guys had fresher legs and were able to get to loose balls and that was big as well.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Creighton was playing/shooting like absolute dogcrap for the last 8 min or so of the 1st half. A quality team-which Creighton is-isn't going to continue to play like that all game-it's not like tOSU was dominating them on talent. Well coached teams counterpunch and take the other teams best shot, b/c most nights, it will come. tOSU took Creighton's best shot and fought back to win going away. A game is almost never going to end like the hottest/coldest stretch of a given team's night, if the teams are of fairly equal skill.

HS
ShowThemOhiosHere's picture

Just when I thought they might be in trouble...Creighton had found a rhythm, while OSU appeared to be a little out of sorts...they go full beast mode in the final minutes with that game-closing 13-0 run.  Simply remarkable.  This is going to be a fun season.  Who picked them to finish 12th in the B1G again?  LOL

This team is much deeper than anticipated.  Everyone can provide meaningful minutes.  Young stepped up last night in crunch time.  And, of course, so did Woods.  But, everyone played well.  C J was the major factor very late.  Because of our depth, I like us to make a deep run in the B1G and NCAAs.
