The Vest knows what the Big Ten missed. It's unfathomable that Chrisman did not get the special-team honor for the week. Heck, last-minute field goals are a dime a dozen, in fact even more common.
But 5 punts inside the 6 in one half? The gunners did a great job, but the punter has to place the ball for them just right. It's Goldilocks-- not too far and not too short. Amazing talent.
Now back to bottle flipping.

Gee golly, I sure do miss Tressel. Fantastic person!
In the poll era (since 1936), OSU is by far the class of the B1G:
National Titles: OSU 8, UM 3
B1G Titles: OSU 33, UM 27
Head-to-head: OSU 43, UM 36
Major Bowls (New Year's Six): OSU 20-14, UM 10-16
The offense completely sucked and was entirely one-dimensional that season. That was the risk they took turning to Pryor as early as they did. He simply couldn't throw the ball effectively.
I'll be Tress remembers Groom not kicking the ball out of bounds against Miami(NC game) late and Roscoe Parrish damn near won the game for them. Tress was all in Groom's face after that one. Love hearing from the senator.
It was more than interesting [we’ll say] to hear the podcast recently w/Beanie and Boom when they also had Pittman and Troy on, and how they all said Urban goes out of his way to move away from connections to Tressel; ex-players around, etc.
“For me, this is who we are. We have a culture. We work at it very hard. And we’re efficient at it.” - Coach Day
I find that hard to believe considering Troy was at the Spring Game several years ago competing in a throwing competition with Cardale and JT. Meyer also invited Tressel himself back to speak at the OSU Coaches' Clinic so something about that just doesn't add up. Meyer's a fairly busy guy so I highly doubt he has time to reach out to former OSU players from a prior era to him constantly. Not to mention Brian Hartline is currently on staff (remember he played for Tressel). If Urban were so determined to separate OSU completely from the Tressel era Hartline wouldn't be here at all.
Dude. I’m not going to debate it. I heard the podcast. If I was able to post the link I would. In fact they also even said how Tressel “always welcome Coop’s guys” and always talked about Cooper’s tenure, etc...
“For me, this is who we are. We have a culture. We work at it very hard. And we’re efficient at it.” - Coach Day
Well Tressel was in a class of his own in terms of being welcoming to all. There aren't too many coaches out there like him tbh. It sounds to me like these former players are more or less implying that Urban doesn't care for his program being compared to Tressel's all that much and comes across as closed off a bit to the Tressel era as a result. But keep in mind Braxton Miller and Cardale Jones were both Tressel recruits who found success under Meyer. Meyer wasn't entirely closed off to the recruiting benefits Tressel's time at OSU brought.
Not to mention you'd be hard-pressed to find too many OSU players from the Tressel era who aren't still loyal to him (with the exception of maybe someone like Clarett). A lot of Tressel's former players probably think Tressel should still be coaching at OSU to this day and that him losing his job over Tattoogate was a complete farce (remember Mike Adams Tweeted about that specifically during the height of the ZS scandal when Meyer's fate was being decided). Even Terrelle Pryor himself defended Tressel after Tattoogate. The guy built up a very strong cult of personality during his time at OSU no question.
Pretty sure Clarett is loyal to Tress. I thought I have read that Tress used to visit Clarett when he was locked up, or at least he kept in contact with Clarett -- letters, phone calls, etc...
You could be right. Perhaps it was Geiger who Clarett truly had beef with. I was under the impression when Clarett left the program at the time that he and Tress were not on good terms. But then again it's unlike Tressel to ostracize his players under any circumstance.
I have heard (from a guy I worked with who went to HS at St. Henry) that Todd Boeckman secretly despised Tressel for benching him for Pryor in 2008. If that is true he did an excellent job of not showing how pissed he was that season.
I remember that situation, and it was unfortunate for Boeckman who was coming off a pretty solid season at QB. However, I think it was the right move for Tressel due to the fact that his O-line was so weak that year and Boeckman's skill set wasn't a good match. To me, this is an example to refute those who state that Tress played favorites and didn't have the stones to make controversial decisions. Tress wasn't afraid to make changes for the best interest of his team.
You can probably tell that I have the greatest admiration and respect for the man. I appreciated his sincerity in helping others outside of the classroom and field, and I miss seeing his calm demeanor on the sidelines.
Urban goes out of his way to move away from connections to Tressel; ex-players around, etc.
That's curious. I've read before (probably here) that Urban has a generally open door policy for former players. I could see him being hesitant about Clarett or the TatGate Five, but that's about it.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Pryor was banned from campus for 5 years after Tattoogate and there are still plenty of fans and OSU locals out there who blame him for that shitshow. I think it's safe to say he probably won't set foot in Columbus again anytime soon regardless of whether Meyer OKs it or not.
Thank you, coach Tressel, for helping many us rebuild our faith, regain our confidence, rediscover our passion, and retake our rightful place in the kingdom of college football, which is the shiny city on top of the BIG10 hill!
Thank you for standing by your players and not ratting them out even though it meant your job and career. You’re a fine example of sacrifice for a greater good
Fck the NCAA for their outdated and dogmatic idiocy and their resulting treatment of you; same to you university bureaucrats....Yes. You were “all just following the rules.” Rules can have cynical and devastating consequences.
Actually reminded me of John Madden from the Football Life series and the Lombardi 2-part episode. Madden was saying he was a young coach then and new to the Raiders - feeling good about himself/thought he knew everything. He went to see Lombardi at some speaking engagement. He said Lombardi spoke for four hours - all about the power sweep. Then they took a break. Came back in the room and spoke another 4 [more] hours about....the power sweep. Madden said he walked out thinking he [himself] didn’t know a damn thing.
“For me, this is who we are. We have a culture. We work at it very hard. And we’re efficient at it.” - Coach Day
Always good to read about Jim Tressel...one of the best to ever Coach the Scarlet and Grey...still have my Scarlet Sweater Vest...Go Coach Tressel...Go Bucks
Apparently Tressel has blacked out the memory of Austin Spitler's punt block attempt in the national championship game. Still can't figure out how he missed the ball.
Y'all have no idea how long I've been waiting for an article like this to come out after the game. I do appreciate Coach Meyer and don't want him to go, but I will always have a place in my Buckeye heart for Jim Tressel above all others, yes, even Woody Hayes (I mean, I wasn't old enough to understand football when he was coaching). He was a class guy, an Ohio guy, brought us back to relevance, a leader, mentor, and in the end fell on his sword for his players.
A fun, direct and informative read from one of my favorite people. I absolutely hated what happened to him immediately after Tattoogate, although it all worked out in the end. Still, I always think of the NCAA pummeling him for standing up for his players, but taking a "nothing to see here" attitude when Auburn (or some surrogate) paid Cam Newton's dad $160,000 to get his kid into a Tiger's uniform.
Did the NCAA even buzz around when Tallahassee shielded Jameis Winston from justice? Maybe that was on the city, and legal types, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was knowledge amongst Florida State personnel. Perhaps an email.
I liked that as well. Catching the snap is just one of those things you sort of take for granted a punter can do. The whole thing starts there as he said but we all get distracted by distance and hang time and placement and so forth.
You've got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.
Ha! Great read. It's like reading about the finer points of quantum mechanics and string theory, only much more interesting and probably more relevant.
Yeesssssss!!!! This is the best article with one of the greatest to ever roam the sidelines in the Horseshoe. I love the Tressell's favorite moment segment and I was hoping a feature like this would appear this week! Thanks for taking the time to do this. I'm grateful he obliged and took time out of his busy schedule!
Just going by the headline, crazy excited to read what Jimmy T has to say about the punting game. Also.. felt the need to express that excitement in the comments section prior to actually reading the article or any other comments.
When I saw the picture of him for the article as I was scrolling, I got butterflies in my stomach, and it took me back to when he was coaching. Like seeing a long lost first crush lol. I have to say, I do miss him. Glad he’s doing well <3
Why do we always picture Tressel watching the game sitting in a chair by the fire, with an afghan on his legs and sipping warm milk/tea and pleasantly smiling when a special team's play, especially the punt, works brilliantly! It is just how the vest appears to us!!! Like a soothing warm blanket!
The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
Gee whiz, this interview was just the cat's meow.))) But, I can't believe you didn't ask the Senator about his hand-painted, pre-washed, Drue Chrisman jean jacket and how comfortable he and Ellen feel settling in for a game after enjoying the breakfast special at Perkins Restaurant and Bakery off Boardman. He did tell Ellen that he thought that jacket was going to be about as useful as a screen door on a submarine before he slipped it over his sweater vest, and realized how comfortable it was. Thanks for a great post.
Old enough to remember all since and including Woody. Mr. Tressel was the man who lifted us up after we had lost to Mich. Far too many times. The winning including the NC over Miami was fabulous. He is near the top. A living legend with class and dignity. 2 steps below him on life's ladder is elite.
Thank you for everything.
11W should do a review with Tressel each week during the season LOL

Does he know about the debriefings after each game, and the Jim Tressel's Favorite Moment section?

"What was your favorite/least favorite moment of the game?"
"How did you spend your morning before the game, etc.?"

It wouldn’t have been a problem if they had called the obvious block in the back on Hawk who was in position to make the tackle.

So according to JT, the skill set for a quality punt gunner is similar to that of a WR successful in breaking press coverage. Makes sense.

I found the part about the punter having good hands interesting. I hadn’t thought of it being important before.
