Not only did they fill up the stat sheet....they filled up the Bingo Board!!!

3 Freshman account for 48 points.  Lots of good things and a few things to clean up...GREAT GAME BUCKS!  BINGO!

It’s more than just Jackson. Can’t say enough good things about this team. Muhammad gives this team energy and attitude. Kyle Young has really developed into his role. Washington can straight up shoot. LeDee plays really hard.

HS
IronPastor's picture

I think our freshman class was severely underrated...WOW.  Washington is fearless...that man can shoot!  Ledee with 5 blocks and 16 points?  I thought he was supposed to be a raw project??  Muhammad is a fierce defender.

Good things coming for this team.

Washington is nearly automatic from outside. His release is lightning quick. Ledee was credited with 12/14 from the line, but I was there and thougt he hit all of them. I’m sure I’m wrong, though. These freshmen are players......not timid, frail, duds. This could be a very surprising season.

They are also having fun playing together. Holtmann has brought a welcome cultute with him.

Apart from some 3 pointers in the first half from PFW, it wasn't that close. It blew up in the second half with awesome defensive play. Whatever changed at halftime certainly worked. 7 point halftime lead turns into a 46 point rout. This team's identity is effort, hustle, and stingy defense.

HS
wigmon's picture

we were helping too much on their drives in the first half and missed a couple of rotations.   the second half we did a little better job of shutting off the drive and also didn't help as much which severely limited their 3 point attempts.  We gave up some shots in the lane but contested 10 footers on the move didn't go down often for them.

HS
Zimmy07's picture

LeDee had at least 4 blocks as well.  If Washington & C.J. keep shooting 3’s that well & the defense keeps playing that hard I can’t see finishing 8th in conference.

HS

Outstanding play by OSU, with well-distributed scoring. But let's not get too excited yet. The Optimism lamp is certainly illuminated, but let's see if they can keep it up.

Beat Blue-Jays !

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

He also hit his first career 3-point attempt near the beginning of the game.

I’m pretty certain Young attempted a few 3s last year.

This team is fun. I dont want to fast forward, but we are gonna be dangerous once our young guns start getting some experience. I'm excited to see where this ride takes us. I've been loving the journey so far.

HS
bucksfan92's picture

Squeaked that one out!  I liked what I saw in the second half.  I think we had a little bit of a hangover early, first home game, trying to adjust to a different style of offense than UC played, and we ended up chasing shooters.  Great to see things settle down in the second half and holy crap 66-27 is impressive even if you are playing a mid-level mid major.  Now it gets real again Thursday night in Omaha!

HS
Knarcisi's picture

PFW came out hot. We didn’t panic and stayed patient and didn’t force anything. Well coached team.

HS
Buck68's picture

agree with Coach Holtmann's presser comment that he was most disappointed in our sloppy stretch of the last 8 min of the first half, where PFW outhustled us and earned several 2nd & 3rd looks, plus we had unforced turnovers culminating their break-away lay up at the buzzer.

but ...

the pluses were many more, and the effort level was again very good and consistent.  And we sure caught that 3 pointer flew-bug without the usual chucking it up circus.  Solid shooting mechanics.

team is getting more experienced by the day.... the season and the team are still young... and the coming tests are many.

HS

Coach Holtmann and his staff are laying the foundation for a solid program. You have to be impressed with the style of play, teamwork and effort.

I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.

I really like how this team is rather fundamental right now. That was a beautiful second half

HS
TheDizzle's picture

Muhammad is an animal, he's also a class-A douche bag which guiltily makes me smile. He's easily the best on ball defender Ohio State has had since Craft. Washington's catch-and-shoot ability is a thing of beauty, hopefully he will be more consistent than Kam Williams was. K. Wesson and Jackson are both efficient. Ledee is a baby, he is still raw but in a couple years could be scary good. Holtmann has these guys playing defense at a level that is on par with the prime Matta years... Watch out, this team could be better than last year. #2020NationalChampions

I think he just means his cockinees and swagger he brings. Dbag probably isn't the best word to describe him. You can see Muhammad is the most vocal, trash talking type of player we have.

HS
Knarcisi's picture

It’s called attitude. And he backs it up and naturally demands that effort from his teammates. Two games in and you can tell he is already the leader of this team.

HS

Exactly what this team has been missing for years. Love his attitude

Don't tell Joey Lane that he's not the team leader.

I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.

HS
ibuck's picture

With his mom in attendance, Joey Lane had a great stat line:

100% FG%, 1 for 1 trey, 5 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists in 5 minutes.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

HS
TheDizzle's picture

The stare downs, the clapping in people's faces... you can tell he talks trash and gets into the opponents head. I love it. He's over the top competitive which is something lacked in the waning Matta years. Reminds me of Draymond Green, you can tell it rubs off on the rest of the guys and gives them confidence on defense.

Good. I love it too. Attitude never hurt around here in an athletic program. We could use more of it.

HS

Hopefully Holtmann and staff can reduce any unsporting behavior without reducing Luther's competitiveness and will to win. Seems it's an East coast attitude. Scoonie Penn had something similar, like an indomitable will to win.

But without fisticuffs or technical fouls.

Love all the guys diving and hustling. Even our two star players. Jackson ran into the stands to get back on a fast break one time and even the big fella Wesson even dove on the ground for one. The way holtmann gets these guys to buy in and play hard is amazing. What a coach

I think creighton is a bubble team. Got a lot of young talent like us. Their sophomores are really good. It’s going to be a tight game. Have some really good guards and two guys that are 6”11 to 7 feet. Going to really challenge us rebounding.

I wouldn’t be too certain.  Washington was a prolific shooter in HS and Jackson and Woods have proven themselves to be shooters at the college level.  We may not shoot as well as tonight, but I don’t think we are going to be a terrible shooting team either.

GEAUX BUCKEYES

HS
LPCBuckeye's picture

Oh I don't think we will be terrible but even the best shooters have off nights.  Great D and hustle can make up for some of that. We should be formidable by mid B1G time.

HS
DroneBuck's picture

We’re formidable now. Winning at Cincy is not something many teams will do this yr, and scoring 100+ points is not something many teams will do either. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing against air, it’s hard to put 100 points on the scoreboard in a 40 minute college basketball game. This team showed true grit & toughness against Cincinnati, then showed offensive prowess & explosiveness against Ft Wayne. Surprising as it may be, we’re already a complete basketball team that appears ready to compete against anyone (Duke not-withstanding). Coach Holtmann continues to amaze.

HS
awlinBrutus's picture

Woods and CO are probably at their ceilings, Washington on the other hand could be the dagger come tourney time. Their chemistry is what impressed me the most on defense, bring on Boeheim, get it?

Fo-shizzle, Holtman has got it goin' on !!! It's hard to even grasp that Matta would recruit his tail off and then only play 3 guys off the bench, for short stints placed pretty far apart. Heck, the walk-ons got more than 5 minutes apiece tonite. PFW is no joke in a sport known for frequent David-beats-Goliath scenarios, but our depth and ability to spread the scoring around was far above their ceiling. In a year when depth and ability to replace a ton of lost scoring were the concerns going in.

They should be able to compete in most every game following the Holtman mantra of playing hard, smart and within their abilities.

North until you smell it, west until you step in it

FREE THROWS!!!!!!

Im going to be overly excited about that!!!

Loved Matta but the free throws under his coaching were awful(below average).  The over the top apologist will blame the player.  For a team to be good at free throws the coaches have to place imporyancenon it, with correct teaching, coaching and emphasis during practice .   If you don’t have a good free throw shooting team, I can tell you they are broken in how they coach it

The best thing about the game was that everybody got some valuable face time and, too, Joey Lane had a chance to shine.  Enjoyable game.  The starters dominated.

HS
wigmon's picture

don't know if he's quite ready yet, but the next three years, this is going to be Mohammads team.  Not just the intensity, but he does more talking than anyone else.  He and Washington definitely have those leadership qualities.  That being said, I'd like to see how they handle that when things aren't going our way.  Gotta be able to lead in those times as well to get the team to follow.

kaleb didn't score much in this game, but our open looks, specifically in the first half had a lot to do with how much attention he was getting from ipfw.  The second half they looked a little tired and looks were coming pretty easy.  the frosh obviously had great games.  Be interesting to see how ledee is used moving forward.  didn't play against uc, then got in the game fairly early and played a lot of minutes in this one.

I was at the game and didn't quite understand either of the flagrant calls.  What did the replays show on these?

HS
OSU069's picture

I agree with all of this, and the flagrants were insane. I was watching on TV but I had the volume kind of low so I'm not sure what their reasoning was but they seemed to be completely ridiculous calls.

HS
IronPastor's picture

I agree with all of this except Muhammad isn't going to be around for 3 more years...I think he has KBD or better talent as a ceiling, and ends up gone before his senior season, but I could be wrong.

If not, imagine Carton, Muhammad, Washington, K. Wesson, Young, Liddell, Ledee, and Gaffney??  That 8 man rotation would be staggering....

CJ Walker as well, think it would be a 9 man rotation.

Wigmon- the flagrant fouls were due to locking arms while trying to box out (apparently a point of emphasis this year). Seems overly cautious, but they did reference the Isaac Haas injury from last year.

This team is going to be a lot better than I thought. The new guys have definitely been impressive so far. If they can stay together I think they'll have a very good year. im anxious to see how they compete in conference play.
