Number 1 rule in life: always beat That Team Up North.

HS
CarolinaBuck's picture

Remember back to the Joe Germaine/Stanley Jackson days? We used both QB's but it was fairly easy to defend because all Germaine did was throw the ball and all Jackson did was run it. Urban has to mix it up and let Tater throw the ball to make it effective.

HS

I agree, can’t just run with Tate every time he’s in the game.  I don’t understand the DVs, just advocating for keeping the D honest.

Having him in during obvious running downs like 3rd and 1 or 2 is great because it gives another responsibility for the defense. I like the idea of making it rpo and giving him the option of throwing if he keeps it.

Double those Yesses!(a word...don't know)  Weeks ago I suggested this as a method to help our run game.  Michigan State's D had no respect or fear of Haskins running the ball.  Their end man on then los crashed down everytime.  With Martell, he has to hesitate just enough to allow Weber/Dobbins a second to plant and go.

Our next progression would be to allow Martell to throw the ball.

The big issue with our OL seems to be the skill our down five have in pulling, or in old coach terms, folding around and getting to,the POA with speed and aggression.  I am not sure they are athletic enoiugh.

Because most teams with a pro-style QB and four and five stars across the offensive line and four and five stars throughout the offense and two 1000-yard running backs don't need the threat of a running QB to move the ball on the ground.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Yes, he did. I really enjoyed seeing some fire from Haskins on that run down the sideline--fought for extra yards and talked a little trash afterwards. Of course, it came back due to Pridgeon's hands to the face penalty.

The Martell "wrinkle" would be more effective if he's a threat to throw it. Otherwise, it's nothing more than a wildcat. I hope we see more of him against UMD and he's given a chance to throw a few.

HS

I don't think Martell needs to throw against UMD but there at least have to be plays in his package where he can throw. Auburn just scored out of the wildcat in the red zone when the RB surprised everyone by throwing it to a wide open TE instead of running.

That was a great run.

We'll never know, but I'd love to learn the truth about whether that one run was born out of seeing Martell get the red zone snaps in practice.

I understand that competitors don't want to come off the field and he said the right thing, but the truth is if he really wants to help the team and stay on the field...become a running threat too.

HS
Extramedium's picture

A lot of it probably came from all the crap he took on social media for his goofy looking runs the previous week.  He can run it, he just prefers not to, and I think the coaches often tell him to slide rather than get hit.

Though it sparked the run game with Tate in there, they have to let him throw it also, or the other team will just bare down on Tate. If they allow him to pass once in a while it will keep the defense guessing and make it more effective like in the BIG GAME against that team up north.

Once he starts keeping a few of those zone reads, Mike & JK will be running wild. If we can snap the ball correctly that is...

HS

What's up with that? MJ get praise from every direction and outlet but he's the only center in America that can't get the ball back to the QB.. his snaps ruin the timing of the offense so often and it goes over looked, and today it caused a TO in the redzone..

HS
Monclovabuckeye's picture

I believe MSU had a botched snap which hit their in-motion back today, so Jordan's not the only center in the country that can't get the snap to the QB.

Look, Haskins is the new wave. But you do have to be able to move. I think of the Marshall qb not too long ago. From the MAC, Leftwich, who played in the NFL. Martell brings the element to Myers offense that opens EVERYTHING up! So in the red zone that’s an option. First half was so frustrating and hard to watch. The 2nd half was dominant by the Buckeyes! Learn from this.

The crazy thing is sure didn't look like they even unleashed him yet. It looked like we were in last years RPO but sure seemed like every call was made before the snap. Just the threat of him kept the defensive end at bay... They start putting him in there and letting him adjust at the line based on what he sees and it causes all sorts of headaches for Maryland and Team Up North having to prepare and defend it..

You mix in Tate... and stick with the running back who has the hot hand like they did late in the game vs the dumb every other series thing and the offense starts getting a few wrinkles......

And CATCH THE BALL fellas...

HS
seyekcuB's picture

Back when Bama was really rolling a very similar QB beat their ass. It's going to take a dynamic player at QB to beat them and Michigan for that matter. Get him some reps haskins is one and done anyway. Tate could be around 3 more years.

HS
DP71's picture

I disagree that Haskins is one and done.  He needs one more year of experience unless they win the CFP this year.  Martell needs experience too because he changes the offense and will be a big factor getting the running game going.  Also, I don't want him to get discouraged. Martell is terrific and will also probably lead us to the CFP and hopefully a championship in the next three years.

HS
seyekcuB's picture

He needs another year but the Qb crop is weak this year. He could be the 1st or 2nd QB picked.

HS
Extramedium's picture

If he's looking for a productive NFL career and not just being one of the top QBs in a year when QBs will not be top picked, he'd be smart to stay.

If he stays another year he'll be a top pick regardless of the QB competition in the draft.

HS
I am Kirok's picture

We thought Jones would get the chance to develop too. Went from a 1-2 round pick after the championship to a...fourth? If Haskins is projected to go in the first he'd be insane to not go.

HS
LB U's picture

I think the problem with that scenario Is that it's extremely unlikely -- Martell will transfer if Haskins comes back. He's not sitting on the bench for the first 3 years of his career..

HS
chris's picture

By transferring, he will sit the first 3 years of his career.

HS
LB U's picture

That hasn't stopped QB's from doing it before, Kyler Murray being the most notable one. If Martell is sitting on a bench next year, It won't be at Ohio State.

HS
chris's picture

I don't know what he'll do, but time will tell if Dwayne sticks around.

HS
Extramedium's picture

I don't think it would do Martell much good to sit on the bench at a brand new school, especially when you know Meyer is dying to get back to the type of offense that will make him a star.  Martell isn't guaranteed a starting spot anywhere unless he takes a significant downgrade in teams anyways.

HS
Nutinpa's picture

Martell isn’t going to stand on the sidelines for another year watching this shit show of an offense.

HS
Extramedium's picture

If he transfers he'll be standing on the sideline somewhere else anyways.

The ideal would be continuing to work him into the offense tebow style so he gets in the games and is ready to take over 100% when Haskins does leave.

HS
CptBuckeye24's picture

Klatt really summed up Haskins' draft prospects very well today. You need experience and more reps. Tools are there. But he makes a lot of throws that are within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage and he needs to further develop his down field passing. He also needs handle pressure better.

HS
BUCKAROOTIMESTWO's picture

Can’t exactly say it’s his fault that the Coaches are not calling for deep passes, aside from the one overthrow to McLaurin, other pass plays were primarily dinks and dunks.

HS
Extramedium's picture

No one says it's his fault.  Just that he needs more experience.

HS
BuckeyeinFlorida's picture

Urban wants the short passes because they're safe. He could make our passing game work better by mixing in 12 - 20 yard passes.
The passing QB isn't a liability to the run game. The poor blocking scheme is. NE Patriots have a passing QB and an O line that blocks.
Maybe the gimmick (Tate) will be effective. What about when Michigan is applying pressure and nullifying our gimmick ? Instead of getting cute we should be getting better. Red Zone offensive attack of JT Barrett revisited. I didn't like the '15 rotation either. Cardale only beat the nations best and convincingly won the N. Championship. Gotta use that high percentage gimmick.
Hmmm

HS

HS
tcm1968's picture

I thought he was a lock early in the year but he still is really raw.  As the defense have gotten better his flaws become more obvious..

The draft class at QB is awful but it's a weird year. You've only got a handful of teams that need a QB1 and hard to imagine someone spends a first on Haskins to play QB2....

If he's a second round pick it becomes about $$$$ and opportunity..... if he waits another year could be all sorts of teams looking for QBs because there are so many older dudes with a year or 2 left...

If Haskins comes back, takes the next step, maybe wins the Heisman and takes the team to the playoff.... the difference between being picked in the mid/late second round to a top 10 pick could be 10's of millions of dollars...

I tend to think he's going to come back...

Go Bucks!

HS
buckeyenationlouisvillebranch's picture

Disagree. Haskins will go. Crop of QBs is weak and while money is important there is enough teams desperate to get a QB or a playoff team late in the first round looking for a project QB to bring along.

It’s a strategy. Especially in a transition year when the offense hasn’t been geared to the new style. It obviously works long term, but having the talent wasting on the bench brings an obvious advantage that needs to be used.

"Age wrinkles the body, quitting wrinkles the soul" Woody Hayes

HS
tcm1968's picture

It's less gimmick imo because we were forced into it. We don't have very physical receivers and the best of the bunch is Mack. The closer you get to the goal line the more physical your receivers need to be. Mack went down and it didn't leave us a bunch of options. You can't expect to toss the jump ball to Victor and expect that to hit every time or if at all. Teams are just loading up the box and playing press/man on our WRs and saying these guys aren't physical enough to beat our DBs... then it's just a bad numbers game trying to run a running back against 8 dudes in the box.

They had to do something..

Go Bucks!

HS
LB U's picture

Yes and not only that, the offensive line just isn't good this year. Weber isn't rushing for a 100 yards if Martell doesn't play today.

HS
tcm1968's picture

We've sort of heard some things from the oline that if you read between the lines they don't really love the 2 back thing. I tend to agree with them. Weber and Dobbins aren't the same guy. It's not the same style of blocking. And to just flip that every other series has to be taxing. The oline needs to get in a rhythm just like the RB does. I love Dobbins but Weber has been the better back with this Oline... I just ride Weber as the RB1 and see if the consistency doesn't roll over to the OLine as well..

Go Bucks

HS
CptBuckeye24's picture

That maybe the case but that doesn't account for stupid penalties and sloppy fundamentals from the OL. They struggle to get a push at times, completely miss blocks at times, and get pushed around.

Not disagreeing with you and your point, that's more of an excuse on their end.

HS
tcm1968's picture

Jordan has been a problem at center all year. Bad snaps to bad timed snaps has caused lots of problems/false starts... is what it is at this point..

And some of it is on the QB... That's where JT is really missed at times. Like we couldn't contain their d end Willekes.. He was lining up on a different sides and we had one or two plays where Prince was to let him the d end through and the Pridgeon was supposed to swing over and make the block. That was NEVER going to work. Before the ball is snapped that's a losing play because Pridgeon isn't quick enough to swing over and stop a guy like Willekes because he's too quick off the end. Haskins didn't check out of it and the play got blown up both times. JT would have checked out of that stuff... Haskins just isn't seeing the game at that level yet.. Looks like the offensive line gave up sacks but that's on the play call imo..

Obviously there have been spots when the Oline hasn't been good but they haven't had the help making them "look good" like the did with JT..

Go Bucks!

HS
CptBuckeye24's picture

Agreed. But why is it even an option for Pridgeon to be swinging over and blocking that? That's a low probability play, because, like you said, he isn't even quick enought.

But agreed, Haskins needs to improve his football IQ and pre snap reads.

But Jordan needs to go back to guard next year. He's too big and makes some unforced errors....

HS
tcm1968's picture

That's where experience comes in. The play was called probably thinking it wouldn't be their #1 defensive end because he was rotating... when Haskins saw him out there should have been a mental check of "this won't work".....  but he doesn't have that experience yet..

Go Bucks!

HS
Meatchickeneater's picture

Not saying that he should not have checked out of that call but there is another issue of the ball being snapped late or high/low. That split second does not give the offensive lineman time to get over. Pridg. was late getting over because of the delayed snap. It has been happening all year. The jump that the defense is getting is not because someone is "tipping" the snap count it is because we are late snapping the ball! You can see it when the our linemen are moving a split second before the ball comes out!

Technically you could call the Bucks for about 15-20 false starts per game!

You never get a second chance to make the first impression

No offense. But that means they hurdled a low bar. Yes the D played great but this game should’ve been put away early on the 4th quarter.  The Offense looked putrid for stretches.  I was glad to see Tate get some snaps and I hope he gets more for the rest of the season.  If that hurts Haskins’ feelings, then he’ll need to grow two more thick skins before he goes to the NFL.  If he thinks Buckeye fans are unreasonable, then God help him if he winds up in New York.

I wanted to see Haskins be the starting QB last year and am glad he is starting this year. Still, I think Tate is the better option for short yards and within the opponent's ten yard line. It's called situational adjustments.

HS
Nutinpa's picture

You must be enjoying watching Haskins put up gaudy stats that don’t mean shit since the Offense has been figured out.  Did you criticize JTs gaudy passing stats that were padded by the pop passes behind the LOS durimg his career like so many did?   Then are you equally critical of Haskins seven yard passes from the LOS that dont move the chains?   Just wondering.

HS
BbBnD's picture

Terrible run blocking isn’t indicative of an offense that’s been figured out. It’s indicative of a soft line. The passing game has been fine. Dwayne’s worst game in his first year of starting is nowhere near as bad as JT’s Iowa game and that was after starting for three years. What are you talking about?

HS
Nutinpa's picture

I agree the O line is soft. But if you were watching the same game I saw yesterday and the previous 3, our O isn’t surprising anyone.  And if you think the “passing game is fine” then I guess you’re cool with having the punter as the player of the game.  Third and 8,,,,and we routinely pick up 7.   That’s not “fine” in my book.

HS
BbBnD's picture

They were 23 yards short of Meyer’s stated goal for passing yards in a game. Sounds fine to me.

Special teams became important because OSU was completely unable to run for 3 quarters.

They only threw the ball 5 times in the 4th and Dwayne was 3/5 for 33 yards, meaning he got about 200 in 3 quarters.  If he threw at the same pace as the first 3 in each quarter, as he may have in a closer game, he would’ve had 260+ yards, above Meyer’s stated target.

If it means that an opposing DE has to think for just one second on who to take. It is way better than watching them crash down on the RB on every play for a TFL because they know the QB is not an option.
Should also keep wear and tear down on Haskins by keeping him out of those plays.
Depends on the weather but wouldn't mind seeing Martell get a majority of snaps vs Maryland. Should give TTUN more to prepare for.

HS

I don’t like that our offense can’t score in the redzone without a running QB. These coaches get paid enough to draw up running schemes that can score in the redzone.

HS
Buxki84's picture

Agree. This is not rocket science. Use the hybrid. Fake handoff to the RB going left, hand to the hybrid going right and vice versa. You get the D line and LBs out of position using the initial run fake and out leverage/trap them. You can also run counter bootleg with the QB and throw using the same fake handoff misdirection.

I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.

The kid should be in the game more than red zone or some sort of "Package" he has an arm and his running is a legitimate threat. I have no problem playing both I mean heck look at the way the defense subs in and out....and yes still drives me crazy

I think they should bring him in a lot more. Definitely in the red zone, but why not in other key parts of the game? If he's brought in just for the red zone offense, I'm afraid they will be to predictable. The team really responds well with him in the field. Dwayne is definitely the starter, but he is still young. Having Tate in there is the secret ingredient they need going forward.

Both qb's need to be all in on this idea too. Not sure that the QB room is as .....warm....as it had been in years past.

If I was Haskins, I'd be leaving after this year.

Urban is hellbent on dying on his read-option hill, and that doesn't bode well for Haskins. Cardale elected to return and got absolutely fucked by that decision,  gotta be weighing into the mind of Haskins

HS
BUCKAROOTIMESTWO's picture

Folks saying he should stay; stay for what.

Here’s the thing, Urban KNEW early enough what he had in Haskins when Burrow chose to transfer.

The Staff did nothing to change the offense to suit Haskins’ skill set; if they didn’t do it this year, WHY would they do it next, when Haskins would be even more likely to declare for 2020 dead.

My thought is that they won’t change the offense in the offseason.  Instead they’ll give Haskins a sales pitch about changes, as insurance to have seasoned QBs.

Yeah Meyer is stubborn.  There’s change and progress in the college game, either adapt or get left behind.  Haskins ain’t throwing a lot of intermediate or deep throws, and it’s bexause he’s not being positioned to do so.

HS

The offense was running on all cylinders until Meyer came back and started tinkering with it. Now there is no identity.

I feel for Haskins. Kid wants a shot at Heisman (like his hero Troy?) and deserves it but won’t have the stats if Tate is being used a lot. In reality his shot was already over bc Tua will be winning it. Hard lesson putting team before self but Dwayne is going to learn it.

A good 50+% of the coaches in the NFL don't know how to utilize their QBs properly. Hell, Mike McCarthy has wasted Aaron Rodgers' career for the most part. I think it's safe to say Haskins needs to avoid being drafted by the Browns. Then he might have a chance to succeed in the NFL lol.

HS
Buck-n-A's picture

We need Martell with some meaningful reps. What if the Michigan game is 30mph winds and frigid? He will be very important. Heck he didn't even need to do anything, his sheer presence was enough to open it up.

Bears...Buckeyes... Battlestar Galactica.

HS
TomD's picture

Looking perhaps a little bit too far forward (Beat Maryland!), one of the most effective ways to keep the Michigan defense off-balance is to play both Haskins and Martell.  The combination will give opposing DCs fits, as the defensive approach is completely different with Haskins on the field and then with Martell on the field.

Martell's presence opens up the run game for the RBs. Haskins still plays the majority of snaps, maybe 60-70%, but bring Martell in for multiple situations.  This is a great idea that was a long time coming. Credit the coaching staff that they finally did it.

Hate to tell you but quarterbacks don't matter when you're able to generate pressure like Michigan. Prince is gonna be a welcome mat for anyone he lines up against.

If you wanna watch a snuff film, watch the OSU/Michigan game. Their defense will be absolutely smothering. It just keeps getting better each week, their offense just keeps getting better each week. They're the #1 defense in the NCAA, and it's not even close.

They've only given up 1946 yards this year (not including Rutgers, but looks like they're gonna hold them under 250). The second team has given up 2260 yards.

HS
TomD's picture

Let's hope that Michigan is sporting the same attitude that you've just reflected.  They're a cinch to win The Game this year.  It's hopeless for Ohio State, they'll be overwhelmed by the far superior Michigan defense.  Michigan is very good, especially on defense, but the Buckeyes are, overall, the more talented team.  It will come down to who has the better game plan, makes continuous in-game adjustments and executes that game plan.

The Game is played on the field, and that is where The Game will be won.

It will come down to who has the better game plan, makes continuous in-game adjustments and executes that game plan.

And Jim Hairball has looked light-years better than Urban Meyer in that department this year.

Michigan aren't going to get lulled into false security by this lackluster Buckeyes team. They're aiming for a national championship, and they know that a complete decimation of the Buckeyes will all but confirm their seed.

HS
OSU069's picture

Complete decimation? Hilarious.

HS
740Buckeye740's picture

A team allowing 13 points/g and 220 ypg vs an offense that struggles against bottom tier defenses.

Who do you think's gonna win?

HS
OSU069's picture

So TTUN beats MSU 21-7 a few weeks ago, and we come out and beat them 26-6. Yet your talking about decimation which is crazy. Also, we are 10th overall in college football in point per game and TTUN is 26th. You are vastly overrating them and acting like they are Alabama. The game is in Columbus and if our defense plays solid like today, we will win again, just like we do every single year against them. We are averaging over 40 PPG for fuck's sake. I know it hasn't been great on offense last few weeks but TTUN offense is completely based on power run and they are not explosive. Your negative is insane.

HS
740Buckeye740's picture

We're averaging 40 ppg against, who?

Power run works great against our weaknesses...we're unable to seal the edge, and our linebackers are too slow and too small...you just laid out the way they're gonna dominate us.

They're playing prime Tressel Ball and it's paying dividends for them

HS
OSU069's picture

So you really don't see all the similarities between the offense TTUN runs and the offense MSU runs? Have you watched either team all season? We just completely handled MSU's offense. Of course, TTUN is better than MSU so we obviously aren't going to blow them out. It will be a really close game and we will have a great shot to win. You are entitled to your own opinion, but you will see on November 24th. Once again, I don't know why you are acting like they are Alabama.

HS
740Buckeye740's picture

Offensively, they're far from Alabama, but as I said their defense is elite.

Our offensive line is suspect at best, and Haskins doesn't do well under pressure. If it comes down to a battle of two defenses? I'm picking Michigan every time.

Haskins did kind of make up for that a little in this game with that sideline scramble he had where he bulled his way through defenders (though the play was unfortunately nullified by Pridgeon's hands to the face penalty). But yes, it's going to take some time for him to live last week's slide down.

I watched him miss a handful of wide open guys today up close.  Hard to use a pro style qb correctly if he can’t get the ball to the receiver.  The play calling was not Haskin’s problem today.  His accuracy was.

Watching an ineffective passing QB in the CFP was hard to watch too, but we lived thru it!  Too bad there was unwillingness to use a second QB last year when we had a better defense, Lol!

HS
bucksfan92's picture

Nice to se it only took 10 games this figure this out.  1st and goal just inside the 10 has been the death of this team. Too bad it took a loss and another maddeningly close game before they realized they had this option.

But when Martell is in, it is even more critical for the snap to be clean, which has been another serious issue all season.

HS
Neilwoodgables's picture

This conversation is totally different if that bad snap doesn’t happen and Haskins doesn’t badly miss 4-5 throws. There were a lot of missed opportunities by the Offense today.  We convert those and this game was a blow out.

I Hate Michigan.

HS

We shouldn't have to do this. Our offence should be better with Haskins in the game. But our coaching staff seems entirely incapable of designing a pro style offence around a pro style QB, so we should play Tate as much as humanly possible, because it's the only thing an urban Meyer offence knows how to do.

It doesn’t have to.  They could put Martell in as a RB, with the threat to throw.

HS

Did anyone else notice the run attempt by Haskins with about 8 min left in the 2nd quarter.  That was the hardest run and fastest I think I have seen all year - and he did not go down - was trying to run over the defender.

HS
Buckeye Chuck's picture

I've been calling for this type of Martell usage for several weeks, not only because it really fits his skill set, but because it's always a good idea to look for ways for backups to have a role.

But I wish people — and I think some of those people are on our coaching staff — would stop insinuating that it's impossible to have an effective running game without a running threat at quarterback.

Someone help me understand why you couldn't put BOTH Martell and Haskins in at the same time? That would totally jam up a defense. Look at the goofy pass play that MSU ran yesterday that scored to a wide-open wideout (except for the hands to the face penalty).
