Knowing how easily players run through Werner pisses me off seeing Hilliard not out there. All players get better at game scenarios while in game. Maybe this is Eddie George's disfunction. Players not playing.

I would love to see this, with Baron Browning coming in for Harrison as a blitzing LB.

I do not understand how there have been no changes at LB this season. You cannot keep telling me the Borland and Werner are grading out as champions each game. Watch any film Urban, Werner cant tackle and Borland is slower than a DT (honestly, there was a play against Nebraska where Borland and Dremont were chasing Martinez and Jones outran him). At this point I dont care who is practicing better, they on the field play has been garbage, and tbh, it can't get any worse. Play Hilliard and Jones. Lets see what these two highly touted guys can do now that they are healthy and have actually made plays in limited roles.

I will pound and pound you until you quit

Sounds exactly like what we need to do but it will never happen. Werner and Borland are going to be our staring linebackers until they graduate. They have found a place in Urbans heart and he will never sit them down... Borland, Werner and JT are all a part of Urbans little family they have a key to his house

Glad Keandre is getting a lot of coverage after the punt block. Hopefully this wakes Billy Davis up to put him in for meaningful reps. He’s a Jr. already, immensely talented. Under Luke Fickell, things would’ve been different for him.

I know urban doesn’t like to “micromanage” any of the 9 units. But as the leader of your program, you can’t have talent rotting away on the bench like this for 3 years.

I wouldn't go that far, fickle made the same mistakes with Mitchell and Bell in 2013. Mitchell transferred and Bell hot his first start in the Orange Bowl, and his first interception, via a 1 handed interception @ the goal line no less. Meyer even admitted Fickle should have had Mitchel ready to play, who knows maybe Mitchell stays had he played and lost a year of eligibility. IMO every position should have to be earned to start. Naming starters before spring practice begins is bad precedent to establish in any program. Even when Meyer is around, mistakes are made with who plays or not, so with Meyer suspended for all of fall practice is it really shocking some players look like they are struggling. I just can't believe Hilliard and Booker are not playing.Blows me away.

He was one of the best linebacker coaches in the country for over a decade, a stud player for OSU, and DC for a national championship team.

Booker has been benched 2 seasons in a row (2016 and 2017) because of how awful he was, and he has looked absolutely lost this season. WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP CLAMORING FOR BOOKER?!

HS
buckbornbred's picture

For one, it's hard to get much worse than Werner.

Two, he won DPOG against Tulane.

I think he would play better if the coaches didn't yank him every time he makes  a poor play. Gets a much, much shorter leash than our starting linebackers.

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing Jones get a shot. Some of these young bloods have to be better than our starters.

HS
BuckeyeJay's picture

He has a shorter leash because he has been benched 2 seasons in a row.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Vonn Bell not playing for almost the entirety of 2013 was on Everett Withers (who coached the safeties that year and for some reason thought Pitt Brown was better) not Fickell. There's a reason Fickell was allowed to keep his job for multiple years after that season while Withers was quietly shipped off to James Madison. The subpar LB play that year outside of Shazier was definitely on Fickell but we can't pin the safety personnel decisions on him since he didn't coach safeties. Do some research before posting.

I was begging for him to play early in the season over Werner, but as many have noticed, Fickell should have taken him with him when he left. Poor kid is sitting there chomping at the bit like BWhite

While I see the same issue you do with Werner and with Borland , I’ve seen both of these guys do amazing things last year.  Werner was like a patriot missle on ST. He was a devastating hitter.  But now he’s taking himself out of plays and not using footwork and leg drive to blow up ball carriers. We all saw Borland go from last year’s team leading tackler (at times) to being stuck in traffic play after play.

So in fairness I just wanna take some heat off of these two and throw it at coach Davis. They are regressing while it has seemed anyone off the bench looks better.

It’s also frustrating to see Jerome Baker already making espn highlights outside the program where he was inconsistent at times.

HS
MDBuckeye23's picture

I don't think this is a fair statement, but I agree that White and Keandre play hard and fast and go make plays. Even though Wade has gotten beat a few times, he plays hard and fast and his a threat to make a big play. I would rather go for broke with guys flying around than guys like Borland and Werner who are timid and seem to have lost their feel for the game. Werner was a terror when he was given one job, run as fast as you can like a heat seeking missile on the kick off and punt teams. Within the defense he looks slow and lost.

HS
Trebor40's picture

I feel that Werner is actually struggling for precisely the reason that he has too many responsibilities. I believe he would have started even for Fickell - because Fickell would have simplified his role while allowing him to seek and destroy! As I have said previously, Werner is likely our fastest LB yet seems confused with his role and ever changing responsibilities!

I am all for some new blood for this LB core.  Keeping people motivated to perform at a high level 24/7 by realizing there is a hungry player right behind them is great motivation.  All of these players come here with aspirations to play on Sunday and let’s be honest, you have to perform or you don’t get paid.  Best man plays, period.

HS

Man, this guy just became one of my favorites after watching the video.  What a selfless dude.  He's obviously talented, team first and according to his teammates goes all out all the time.  He needs to play!

HS
BUCKAROOTIMESTWO's picture

Ironically your last accurate statement about Jones will keep him behind the guy(s) that Meyer loves.

Wasn’t Jones a late flip, I wonder if he often regrets buying the sales pitch of the Coaches.  I’ve heard they’re real good @ selling sand @ the beach.

HS
yankeescum's picture

With the shitshow at linebacker outside of Harrison, how has this dude played only one snap over the past five games?  I'll take some mistakes if he makes them, his play has got to be better than Werner's.

If Jones, Booker, Browning and Hilliard don't get some snaps over Werner and Borland, the staff is not doing their due diligence. It has been obvious that neither Werner nor Borland are physically capable of playing their positions right now. Werner is too small and slow, and Borland runs like Dwayne Haskins carrying a piano.

I know Borland is still recovering from a torn Achilles, and I don't fault him for that, but the coaches are out of their damn minds for watching the same disaster unfold week after week.

HS
rkylet83's picture

I don’t know how he could be worse than the starting two at this point.  We should be emptying the bench to find the best players.  The expectations are so low at this point.  Missing gaps, tackles, pass coverage assignments and overrunning plays constitutes champion level play this season...it’s so bizarre.

HS
BuckeyeDevil's picture

It just seems like we have no athleticism at LB this year on top of everything else that has gone wrong at this position. But it isn't that we don't have some athletes at LB. Jones is blazing fast. Looks to me like we need that among other things from the LB's. It is a very bizarre situation.

This is the most active I’ve seen Werner this season.

I think he had more quotes than Jones, in a story about Jones.

Agreed!

Even positionally as I think Hilliard should be moved to middle. It’s time to play and there is no reason to not do this. The worst that happens is we give up a big play.

Coaches need to cut loose, be positive and encouraging and rotate guys in and really note who makes what plays. We can be a totally re-invented team by TTUN. And be ready for the playoffs!!!

yep... [Keandre] "he wasn't 'actually' supposed to be"... in position

Yep - he was only "really" there....   ;-{)}

This example demonstrates two ways of 'thinking' about 'philosophy', 'psychology', and 'the fog of war'... among other basics.

And suggests that the legions prefacing their 'speak truth to power' excited utterances, [e.g. 'totally, honestly, actually, really'] are 'transparently' illustrating either the rational opposite or the very popular, chaotic, "die-versity".

Mean-while... 'the kids' 'go for' NOT 'us'...but their teammates.  Nuttin' to learn there...honest!

The starting LBs should be Harrison/Browning/Jones and the first backups should be Werner/Hilliard/Gant IMO. Loved Borland's fire last year, but something is just missing from his game this year. I know it's a little frightening with the "unknown" but I think with how bad the LB play has been overall you just reshuffle the deck.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

Borland suffered a major injury in the off-season, an injury from which he returned sooner than forecast.  That return brought a collective sigh of relief from staff given how he played like his hair was on fire last November for us.  He came back slower, not as physical.  Have to wonder if he got back on the field before he was fully ready and has been playing at 80% ever since.

Time to chime in--LB's are the worst that I have seen in 30 years of watching OSU---got to think it is a combo of lack of physical play--poor judgement and Billy Davis!!! The difference last week was #25 on D and his willingness to attack not stand back there and wait for the play to come to him. The D seems to wait for things to happen as opposed to making things happen. Hate to say it but Mich. D attacks relentlessly!!

Also mystifies me as to the inability of this O line to be able to get a push on the opposing D.

There is zero chance of any change in starters. Looks at the past couple years. No changes once the season starts.

Maybe the coaches should follow the lead of Alabama, Clemson, ND...the list goes on...so discouraging.

HS
bucknutz18's picture

I'm not one who thinks the coaches are purposely keeping better players on the bench.  What incentive would Billy Davis have for playing inferior players and making himself look like an asshat?  That being said, I don't understand the lack of rotation at the linebacker position.  Our main three (four including Browning) have struggled all season, so why are we not throwing in a guy like Keandre for a series of two every game?  We saw with Brendon White how quickly you can find yourself a player in real game time.  Practice will never equate to Saturdays no matter how bad the coaches might try.

HS
ShawneeBuck74's picture

So, let me get this straight. Keandre Jones:

+leads by positive example

+is a 3rd-year player

+was good enough to NOT redshirt as a freshman

+demonstrates humility and a team-first attitude

+displays aggression & speed on special teams/the field

+hits like a mack-truck

And Bill Davis is like: "Something, something earning coaches TRUST. Can't even give this guy reps on the field because the games are too close. Gotta stick with the guys who through 9 games haven't gotten it done well consistently."

DOES NOT COMPUTE. By every measurable/indicator that Urban has told us about for years about getting playing time at OSU (culture, team first, 4-6, A-B, special teams, accountability) Keandre Jones should be playing a lot.

You win with people.

And so forth...

I’ve coached pony baseball and went as far as attending a Bob Todd coaches clinic to gain knowledge. So I realize how much I Don’t know about coaching at a high level. Repeat the more I learned the more I realized I didn’t know. But. after 14 years of coaching and then watching my boys play in high school, I quickly realized coaches would play inferior kids who had what I call ‘Golden Retriever’ personalities. Coach’s pets. Meanwhile nasty athletes who didn’t match some inspirational criteria sat. My thought was always ‘why don’t you coach them up?’  Why not help these rebels find a way to fit in?  But that requires more work. Boy Scouts make coaches’ lives way easier. I have absolutely no idea if this is the issue with Davis handing out playing time to very bad players or not.  But just putting it out there.

What’ truly mystifying is how a kid with skills and leadership qualities isn’t playing..ever?

Oh , and it’s official, coach Davis is not grading out as champion.

HS
GIBS_STI's picture

This is a great, no, outstanding point. I deal with the same thing I'm 33 years old, most of my subordinates are in their early 20's. Some of my best have the smartest mouths and attitudes, but if you take care of them, coach them, feed and water them, and on game day they win. Then you have the guy that shows up to work on time, does his job OK, but is always average or sometimes below (halo effect) coach see's that he's dependable does what he's told and that's who he goes with. I think Bill Davis has no idea how to coach a young man or how to deal with them if they get out of line.

The sad part is--his own coach doesn't seem to notice his leadership and positivity. He will probably never see the field until Davis is fired. I love Urban but he is letting these coaches drive this bus off a cliff. Every question that is asked about line-ups. He defers to the position coach. Then, you ask the position coach they dodge the question. Who the fuck is calling the shots here? Ray Charles can see that this current linebacker rotation is complete garbage.
