The Bearcats are a bunch of hacks, and that one dude travels almost every time. The Buckeyes still can't hit a free throw to save their life though (pressure free throws, all the misses came in the 2nd half). Great defense by the Bucks!

I couldnt have said it better myself.
76.2% overall FT shooting. Not excellent, but not horrible.
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
I'd take 76% every game from a team FT shooting.
If we get that all year, we'll be in good shape.
16-22 on free throws. They hit at least 1 out of 2 on every trip to the line including 1 and 1s.
I am pretty happy with that.
I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
Yeah, it is pretty unrealistic to expect better than that with a CBB team. That was a good performance from the line.
SO refreshingl to see our team play with passion/fire/want-to!!! The coaching staff coached their asses off, too!! Bravo!!! Go Bucks!!!
Our team is so well coached, what a homerun hire coach Holtmann is turning out to be... We will be in the Final 4 in a few years.
Fire Gene Smith./s
I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.
Buckeyes still can't hit a free throw to save their life though (pressure free throws, all the misses came in the 2nd half).
Sorry, but they did hit a few FT's that helped "save their life" (get the win). For a young team that lost 40 pt/game to graduation, etc, this was a good road win to start the season. Any road win is good.
Would we like to see them shoot better? Of course, 75 or 80% from the stripe would be better. And you expect better from your seniors and starters.
Keep improving, Buckeyes. Beat Purdue-Fort Wayne.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
73% from the free throw line isn't bad at all.
I believe that is better than the national average (which was sub 70% several years ago).
Are you excited about a opening road win or since they didn’t shoot 100 % from the field and line your upset?
Love couch potato coaches
50% (4 of 8) from the line in the last 8 minutes. CJ did hit the last 2, with 10 seconds left with a six point lead on the line, so positive vibes for next game.
The world is yours
Hes getting it done. Now just a few recruiting classes.
Potter has no business being in that locker room. /s
I think it makes Ohio State better, one less eh player taking minutes. He didnt fit in with what Holtmann was doing as a whole

I just worry about depth. You could see how quick it gets dicey when Wesson is in foul trouble.
Hopefully LaDee gets up to speed to fill some minutes. Great effort tonight by the whole team.
I think that clip is from the Purdue game last year.
Seems fitting that Potter was number 0. /s
Come now, Micah is an exceptional young man and we should wish him well.

I thought Potter Transferred..WTF?
Good way to start the season against a tough opponent. This is going to be a fun team to watch. Plenty of work to do to and plenty to clean up as anticipated but there's a lot of potential. Holtmann is awesome.
I thought their effort and attitude was great. Hustling and picking up loose balls many times. The early fouls on the Wessons need improvement. Holtmann can coach.
I don't know how good Cinci is or will be but the Buckeye team I watched tonight should definitely do better than 8th in the B1G.
Cincy is projected to finish second in their conference so maybe this is a sign of good things to come for the Bucks.
In the poll era (since 1936), OSU is by far the class of the B1G:
National Titles: OSU 8, UM 3
B1G Titles: OSU 33, UM 27
Head-to-head: OSU 42, UM 36
Major Bowls (New Year's Six): OSU 20-14, UM 10-16
They are probably the best team in the AAC and a likely a 5-8 seed in the NCAAT. This will definitely help the resume come selection Sunday.
Most predictions have them 2nd or 3rd in conference (ucf seems to be close to a consensus 1st). The conferences best teams saw a fair amount of attrition and espn thinks it may be a one bid league this year. I'd say they look like a possible double digit seed to a bubble team.
We were pretty good defensively and seemed like we held our own on the glass. Their defensive pressure caused some problems getting good looks, but we didn't turn the ball over much and forced them to score in the half court. I like our toughness, but need to work on getting better shots offensively. all in all though, a very good start for a young team.
In Coach Holt I trust.
You win with people.
And so forth...
9 Units Strong!
Good god, that officiating was horrid
Maybe the most obviously one sided officiating I’ve seen in a CBB game.
I've seen worse, but it was pretty bad in the last 6 or 8 minutes. A lot of that happened because UC was aggressive and we were really just trying to hold on. Conscious or not officials favor aggressive teams, especially at home. Glad their fuck ups didn't cost us the game.
Still, it is supposed to be unbiased officiating but it was pretty obvious that cinci was getting lots of home-court calls in the 2nd half.
Great effort from start to finish by this new Buckeye Bball team. Can't wait to watch the rest of the season progress.
Touch fouls called against us and they mugged our guys with no call, and that flop call. Oh my!
Been around the game for 40 years and could be the worst I have ever seen and I HATE bitching about ref’s.
I think some of the touch calls must have been due to breathing on the other guy.
Never place a bet on anything that can talk.
EvenTed Valentine makes these refs looks bad!!
TG Proud Buckeye alumnus.
Huge win to start the season!! The officials tried to hand it to Cincy!
I like this team already. Kaleb Wesson is a go to guy, some of the veterans like A Wesson and C.J. Jackson made some clutch shots and the freshman brought energy and play making ability!
Officials across all the sports I watch - football, baseball, and basketball - are horrid. The only other profession that can wrong so often and stay employed are weathermen.
College basketball are the worst of them all tho. They call fouls that nobody else in the arena sees. It’s bad for the game.
I've done a little officiating and the best advice I've gotten is that its better to not call something that you just didn't see (even if it was a foul), than to call something because you thought you saw it. In other words, don't guess. I can live with an official missing an out of bounds call or two, or not getting the block/charge call correct because you have to call something and sometimes you just didn't have a good angle/look. But some of the foul calls (especially the one on Muhammad) were guesses/reactions without actually having seen anything.
Weathermen do a much better job than college bb officials.
Great road win by a young team in it's first game. I love the way they stood strong in the face of adversity and I LOVE watching them play defense!
Way to go Bucks! Way to win on the road against horrible officiating. The refs kept Cincy in the game.
Get bent Cinncitucky
UC fans have a real chip on their shoulder about the Bucks. Would have loved to have been there just to see the bent fans.
I saw Wings in 5/3 arena back in the mid 70's before the Who disaster. It was a dump then.
Different place. That was US Bank Arena. 5th 3rd is on campus.
Whoops! Gracias for the correction.
I was gonna chime in too. It was originally known as the Shoemaker Center and was built in 1989. And US Bank Arena was known as Riverfront Colisseum when The Who played there.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
I was there they weren’t that bad, although the Turnout by OSU fans was awful. UC fans seem to think they suck
Considering Fifth Third is sold out for the season I wouldn’t expect many opposing fans there.
I have deeply hated that team since 1961 and it was intensified tonight. GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
......add the Damon Flint ordeal to that, as well.
If you are going to cheat to get an average ballplayer, which osu did, you deserve to be turned in. Flint was the one that told cinci, what osu was doing. So I don't blame cinci one iota for that fiasco
Bullshit. Huggins set us up, big-time.
Agreed. Believe it was one of Flint's assistant coaches at Woodward who Hug hired at UC (Light years ahead of Harbaugh) that cried foul. All over a gym bag and a steamboat with fries at Damon's on Olentangy. Bastards. FWIW, Flint was the OHSBCA Mr Basketball, so he was not an "average" player in highschool.
I read blitz
This is a really good win.
And Toledo still sucks.
Huge win! Go Buckeyes!
Onward and upward! Go Buckeyes!
Kyle Young is this year’s JaeSean Tate.
CJ Jackson is this year’s KBD. Cold as ice.
Energy level was great. Guys locked up. The Wessen bros. made plays. This is a team that will be fun to root for. Go Bucks!
Make preparations in advance. You never have trouble if you are prepared for it.
It also looks like having Woods is going to be a big help.
The team only had 7 assists total. Woods had 5 of them.
Yep. He seemed like a much needed addtion for the season. Luther is confident. He is going to turn into a great player for OSU.
Luther had a great game on offense for a defensive guy.
His track record says he's going to be a good player, but he was woeful last night, he ran from the ball-i.e., he wanted no part of the offense. When he did have the ball he couldn't generate any offense at all and forced a couple shots late in the shot clock. Hopefully it was an anomaly from what he's capable of. But I was surprised to see him hide himself in the offense as a 5th year seasoned vet.
Was any reason give as to why ledee seemed to get no minutes? Is he redshirting?
Nice win. I like Ohio State's defense. Rebounding must improve. Kaleb Wesson's clutch 3, CJ's clutch lay up, and Kyle Young's clutch plays were huge highlights.
Whew! I didn't like that this game was on the schedule and I especially didn't like that it was opening their renovated arena. To grab the lead early and hold it for 30+ minutes and withstand 2 furious rallies was huge for this young team. There were plenty of times where it felt exactly like the big collapses last year, but thankfully they kept their composure enough to get by. That last 6 minutes took forever and there were some absolutely atrocious calls that went against us. All that and they still won the game. Big sigh of relief. 1-0!!!
Really refreshing we got to do some growing up:
1. In the first game of the season; and
2. Still pulled out the win.
Should pay off big in the long term.
"Medicine is not a science" - Leo Spaceman
This team is gonna be fun to watch. What a concept.
If we were ranked number 5, you'd be talking about how ugly it was. Its all about perspective...
You sure you're not talking about the football team?
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
Great, gritty win in a tough environment. Way to go Bucks!
Bad officiating and a rough first half and yet we still pulled it out.
Let’s clean up the turnovers and fouls.
love the energy and effort, that will pay off!!!
Being forced to handle UC's pressure was good for this team.
13 turnovers (actually 12, that offensive foul against Muhammad was a trash call). And that is the first game of the year, on the road, and against a good defensive team that pressured us full court.
I'll take that all day, IP.
I was relieved to see they dropped back after the inbound, so no real pressure all game long, a couple double teams. But that's all any other team is likely to do this year. I wasn't the least bit impressed with cinci, they'll have to get much better to make the dance. They aren't the team of the last two years.
Awesome start to the season.
Wesson brothers and young look much improved. Cj Jackson looking like his clutch self. Freshman guards looking really good and composed. Surprised Ledee didn't play but Holzmann coached a great game. Huge road win. Looking like a tourney team here.
Totally forgot how bad college basketball officiating is. Glad they could remind me in game one
They had a lot to overcome tonight! What a great win. Kyle Young was all over the place tonight! Well done Bucks! Also good god on the officiating. Did Muhammad even say anything to the guy after that 3?
Because I couldn't go for three. -- Woody Hayes
Muhammad has LOTS of potential. Holtmann will get him coached up. He covers a lot of space with his size/length.
Refs + Thugcats are a tough out. Osu with basically a whole new team wins a very tough game in a pretty tough environment. Faced adversity and broke through.
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Potter might have been soft but if our Frosh PF can't sniff the floor in this game, we are really going to miss him.
I don’t think it was out of necessity...Young, Andre and Jallow played well at the forward and when we went small, Cincy had to follow cause our guards went off.
I think Ledee will eventually get some mins in key games. It is November. As Holtmann said, it is usually a bigger learning curve for Freshman big men.
As long as Jaedon continues to improve in practice, I see him getting 5-10 mins a game eventually. But that might not happen until January.
if our Frosh PF can't sniff the floor in this game...
Holtmann may require certain standards before he lets guys play, as Urban does with the black stripes . . .
Get a handle on the fundamentals, rebound, practice and play hard and as a team, value each possession, defend well, and then you get in a game.
It really is a luxury that's not afforded to us in football, so watching the Basketbucks with reasonable expectations is pretty rewarding. A messy game for sure, but a lot less messy when you come out with a W.
I will take that road win thank you very much. Good start to what should be an interesting season.
I Hate Michigan.
Been a long time since I have seen a more one sided called game. I missed what conference were those zebras from???? The Suckland Conference?
Rant over. Way to go Bucks!!!!! Not necessarily pretty but for game 1 on the road at Cincinnati I will take it.
Really fun game to go to. Surrounded by Cincinnati fans telling at me was awesome. Great win go bucks
They are something, aren't they? Inferiority complex.
I did enjoy the arena but the fans made me mad. They thought all the fouls were against Cincinnati and it one sides for Ohio State. I had to educate a few of them
Strangely enough at bearcattalk.com no talk about the officiating. It was all "we suck."
They're the TCU fans of Ohio.
Despite absolutely terrible officiating the Buckeyes pull out the big W. Muhammed looked extremely good for a freshman. CJ Jackson is the clutch guy on this roster. Both Wessons were out there doing work. Kaleb making guys look silly down low and Andre hitting shots from outside. Young and Jallow were absolutely crucial with their hustle. Then there is Woods who looked really good as a glue guy out there. Didn't think they'd beat Cincy and definitely didn't think they'd dominate. Would have been a double digit victory without the officiating and it makes me think this season could have some real promise.
Hell of a game! These young guys are going to be fun to watch. Oh, and I didn't have to stay up past my bedtime to watch the whole game!
great game, great WIN! Congrats guys!
16-2 is SWEET!
This was Cincytucky's super bowl/CFP/NBA finals game 7/ FInal Four game all wrapped in one. They finally got a home, regular season, game against OSU, in their arena, fresh off a multi million dollar renovation, and we kicked their ass.
*Holtmann opening the doors to 5/3rd arena*
And then slammed them shut! Got back on I-71 and headed back home with the W!
He went there to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and he was all out of bubble gum.
Big Roudy Roddy fan.

Hell is real. And the bucks brought the fire.
I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.
I Believe In Ohio State.
Great win. Optimistic about the future of the season now. Go Bucks!
Because I couldn't go for three
Great win, even if the refs tried to take it away.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
Gene Smith deserves a lot of credit for the Holtmann hire and Holtmann deserves a whole lot of credit for having the guts to schedule this game (and then go win it)!
We are just lucky McDermit at Creighton turned down the job or he would be the coach instead of Holtmann.
Also it was Chris Holtmann who asked to schedule this game. It wasn’t Gene Smith’s idea.
Even a casual college basketball fan could see that Chris Holtmann at Butler was a future big time coach.
It's very hard to turn down a job you aren't offered, mcdermott by all accounts, but yours, was never offered the job. Then, you're 0-2, it was smith's idea to schedule the game, at least if one believes holtmann. Maybe you just like revisionist history? If one knew holtmann was at butler, he's more than a casual bb fan. As to the rest of your conjecture, it's very subjective.
We may not have a bunch of elite scorers but this team plays with grit. The Wesson bros lead this team with their intelligence and toughness and the young Bucks are following with energy and emotion. Love it.
And C J Jackson, what can I say, COLD AS ICE
You've got barbecue back there?
CJ picked up right where he left off.
K Wesson didn't have spectacular stats but was clearly the best player on the floor
A Wesson played well, need him to stay out of foul trouble, but if he's a consistent performer that's big
Young REALLY impressed me. He clearly put in some work in the offseason.
Muhammed looks comfortable out there which was impressive for a freshman in game 1, and he can stroke it.
Woods played really well early, kind of went quiet, but was solid late.
Jallow and Washington looked good in spots too.
You nailed it. Young figured put how to use his athleticism to play bigger than his size. And he hot his free throws. I think Tate would be proud of the legact he left behind of grit and hustle out of that position
Muhammed not only looks comfortable, he brings it. Young man has amazing confidence and presence. Wouldn't have guessed it was his first game.
Great win! Really excited to watch this team grow this year. Hope rebounding gets a lot better, though.
A win is a win and those are the kind of wins the committee always brings up come selection time. Going to be a fun team to watch.
Great way to start the new season: 1) 5.5 pt. underdogs, 2) away game in a tough environment, 3) very young team's first opportunity to play a regular season game together and 4) head home with a victory! Congrats to everyone, players and coaches, well done.
Yep. It's great to get that first road win.
Great way to start the season
Mark May is a mental midget
Sucks you are 0-1 in your new building UC, too bad you lost in basketball to a football school!
I'm sorry I'm not sorry!
Hard to watch at first but kept in mind first game and on the road.....second half much better, and as said multiple times on here that officiating was horrendous. Tuuuuuurible. Great fight loved to see emotion from the boys, good road W to kick the season off.
20 point game if the officials dont butcher the game.
Man.....for game #1 that was some exciting stuff to watch.
The officiating was as biased and bad as I have seen in recent memory.
Buy the ticket take the ride.
Good win. I love Coach Holtman's class. With 2 minutes left in the game our player hit the floor and teammates went sprinting to help him up. Constant positive body language from the players, a lot of high fives, seems like hes instilled a great culture.
This Holtmann guy. I dunno, he might be on to something ...
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"

Nice start to the basketball season with a good in-state matchup. Schedule UD or Xavier to start next year!
If you would have told me that officials would be one sided for UC all game and we still beat them, I would have called you crazy. Holtmann is the GOAT.
Loved seeing Muhammad and Washington come up big in moments as freshman.
For whatever reason the refs missed every out of bounds call on the one end of the floor. Just a complete guess on who fouls were on or who the ball went off.
If we can get outside timely shooting from A. Wesson, Jackson, Muhammad and Washington we will finish near top of Big Ten.
Realistically I know this team can't compete with the top echelon in college basketball. That being said I really like the players that have been brought in (transfer, recruits) and the make up of this team. I think Holtman has this program on the right path.
Gutsy performance in an absolutely electric road environment! I have to agree with lots of other people on here. That was the worst officiating in the world. I am from Cincinnati and believe me, there are not too many people who are fond of Ohio State in Cincy. The Bearcats are definitely wannabes. They want to be like Kentucky in basketball and they want to be like OSU in football. And they will never will be either! GO BUCKS!
Damn that got me pumped up for the season. Passion across the board, great chemistry in game 1 (that Euro trip just paid off). Great intro to Luther's tenacity, Washington's comfort handling the ball, Woods' smarts, Musa's hella defense and confidence, Kyle Young's 94 feet of hustle. Great team effort.
Great point about that trip to Spain. It's obvious Hioltmann trusts these freshmen and I don't think that's the case if they hadn't shown him something over there.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen an OSU basketball play with their hair on fire like that. Even when the refs were giving the game back to Cincinnati these guys stayed tough and kept playing their game. This is going to be a fun team.
Earle for MOD in 16', it'll be the last best thing to ever happen to him.
This was a pleasant surprise. I frankly didn't see this as a win, given how many changes we've made and the fact that we were opening on the road.
That's the Kyle Young we were told about when he first committed here.
Cumberland will be a good player for Cincinnati pretty soon, but it has to be driving Cronin crazy that we always seem to play the Bearcats when we're in relatively good shape compared to them. Not that I care, of course.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
QUIT BITCHIN ABOUT THE OFFICIATING!, You all sound like a bunch of old ladies. As a team their gonna get hosed by officials throughout the year. The important thing is how this team responds when the calls go against them. In a hostile environment they reached down and got this game in spite of the officiating. NICE JOB BUCKS !!
Loved the energy. Certainly have things to work on but a LOT to be proud of. Go Bucks! This season is going to be fun.
We might win the BIG this year. Boom!!!
1. We won?!?!
2. We only had seven assists for the whole game?!?!
Great win for the young season!! I like how we held on inspite of bad calls towards the end. I like how this program has adapted to the lose of the seniors. I am excited to see this win in a sell out crowd on the road. Go Bucks!!
Was wondering how Cincy could finish what, 6th in the final AP poll last year and not be ranked preseason. They're not very good.
Good win and way to start out the season though!
Luth the truth! ... shit, I'll show myself out. I do like his game and potential though.
You realize that college basketball teams graduate players, and their chemistry changes from year to year, right? UC has two players from last year in the NBA, and another playing overseas, so it's no surprise that they're unranked. And, they never look very good - they play such intense defense and are often lacking on the other end of the court. In the end, they'll still get their 25 wins and sneak into the tourney, as always, and this win will be great for our profile.
I do, and realize teams can lose their top 6 players and still be ranked the following year. They didn't look good to me but it's only the first game of the season. In their conference they could approach the 25 win mark, will have to see how they look in the upcoming games.
Just meant finishing close to top 5 one year then not be in the preseason poll the next should've been telling to me. Cincys a pretty good bball program and not some Cinderella team, usually they'll get some sort of respect in the next years preseason poll. After all, Cincy has made the tourney 8 straight years now.
Looks like Shootyhoops is back on the menu, boys
I’m not sure how we won. The defense was really good. A lot of bad breaks on calls. Passing around the perimeter on a zone until 8 seconds left should work but somehow it did.
Been following UC my whole life. I've never seen them shoot 14% for a half. That's shitty fucking ball. They're awful this year. Lost a lot of senior talent, and did not reload.
If your opponent shoots 14% for a half, and you don't beat them by 30-40 points, then you have a lot of work to do, too.
Shooting 14% for a half could also be attributed to the defense that OSU played on them. Give OSU some credit for their defense.
I've seen plenty of college basketball in my lifetime, and no, UC's misses at point blank range in the first half were not due to OSU's defense.
Good win for the Bucks. Got a lead, handled the adversity, and got the win.
I watched pretty much all of this game, and I really liked what I saw. These guys played their tails off tonight. Loved to see the effort on defense. Neither team shot particularly well in the 1st half, but it picked up in the 2nd half. UC made a couple of pushes in the 2nd half, refs called some BS down the stretch...good job by the guys overcoming that and being able to pull out the W that probably should have been by more than 8.
Class of 2010.
Loved seeing an Ohio State team and coach play with effort and emotion for the whole game. Not bad shutting down UC’s arena grand reopening either.
Looking forward to watching the team this season. Holtmann is taking the program back up
I know our basketball team plays bettet defense then our football team!!!
