Fewest number of players since TCU...crazy I swore I didn't see the entire defense show up against Purdue.
How Sheffield plays so many snaps, and only has two interceptions is beyond me. He might be the fastest player on the team. Some players have a knack for the ball, but it seems this years secondary, despite tight coverage, just can't locate the ball when it is in the air. Thinking maybe they should do things the way Tressel did, switch the defenders and receivers around for a few plays in practice, to get better perspective of going for the ball.
"When you're part of a team, you stand up for your teammates. Your loyalty is to them. You protect them through good and bad, because they'd do the same for you." Yogi Berra
It's the fault of the coaches. They teach them to play the receiver and not look back for the ball. I figured he'd be a stud this year but I was wrong.
If you are Baron Browning...how do you not think about transferring? One of the highest recruited LBs in a long time and currently being coached by one of worst OSU LB coaches in a long time because he is friends with the Head Coach. He is getting no snaps and probably playing out of position at the MIKE spot. He will not get more reps as the HC loves Tuf and continues to give him champion status for 3 tackle days. How does Browning not get any looks at OLB to get him on the field?
He isn't game ready. /s
needs to show more blocking on special teams
I have to return some videotapes
Mouthpiece security issues.
If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.
I would love to see Browning replace Werner outside. Tuf at MLB (we know they wont bench him), Browning and Harrison outside. Why not give it a go?
Everything that happens-good and bad-should motivate you to be persistent. ~JT
Can't imagine being one of the young linebackers on this team. The unit has a whole has struggled and continues to struggle and the "fix" has been to shrink the group to basically 3 guys. In the presser Urban said the linebackers missed 6-7 tackles FOR LOSS vs Nebraska. No speed, can't cover in space very well, missing tackles, Werner can't shed a block and continues to tip ( with his feet) when he's blitzing etc etc.... and they keep rolling them out there.. got to be painful for the young guys knowing no matter what they do in practice they have no chance of seeing the field no matter how bad the guys starting perform... that's freaking locker room dividing stuff because EVERYONE knows that linebacker group isn't good..
I'm with you. This is the worst distribution of PT on the chart. If social media is any indicator... I think there are signs that the young LBs aren't happy with PT or chances.
So, Booker makes a few mistakes and gets pulled. But we don't do that for our starters. Browning .... when not asked to play on the LOS or madly fill a gap for no reason, actually plays with some speed/aggression. But now he's down to 15 plays?!?
You win with people.
And so forth...
9 Units Strong!
Borland once again graded as a "champion". It makes no sense why they won't at least rotate in other LB's to see if there is a better combination. The coaches have favorites that can do no wrong.
Watch that first series ‘pass defense’ on a simple TE move. Ball is tipped, ripe to be picked and he is lost and gets called for PI. iWalkon LBs make that play.
Booker didn't play badly. He missed a couple of tackles on Spielman, but he was in good position; he slowed down the play enough to allow other players to get in on the tackle.
I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.
Cliff Notes Version:
1. OL. Reports of Bowen the Samoan playing again were... premature.
2. OL. It was very interesting that Prince is now getting help in blocking from Davis who lines up on his outside-- and not for pass pro but for running plays.
3. RB. Key insight that Urban went with Dobbins instead of Weber down the 4th-quarter stretch for ball security reasons.
4. LB. And Booker replaced undersized Werner for a couple of plays, but Booker looked lost out there and Werner went right back in.
Ua Mau ke Ea o ka 'Aina I ka Pono. The life of the land is preserved in righteousness. (Hawai'i state motto) Aloha nui kakou.
OL. - It seemed to me that Davis got those 3 snaps mostly to help Meech who's been getting blown off the ball a lot in the run game.
OL. - Urban (Davis is gonna play). Davis (gets 3 snaps). Woo Hoo. Let's see what happens this week with the Samoan or Brady T.
RB. - Mike changed the way he held the ball, but is going back to the old way. IMO he still needs more carries. More of a HR threat.
LB. - Short leash for Booker but the season-long leash for Werner continues. Hilliard and/or Jones should get a shot in his spot.
Good points, Shawnee. Are you knockin' Knox? Would love to see the Samoan. What can you do with Werner when his replacement is worse? Younger guys maybe?
I actually think that jumbo package was just a replacement for Knox. The ran behind/between Price and Davis with great success. Which begs the question why not just put in Davis for Knox. Price has had some struggles but a lot of that is because he's basically been on a island with Knox getting blown off the ball too often.
Price = Prince. And so with Knox getting knocked around, I sure hope Bowen the Samoan gets healthy faster.
I disagree, Booker did not look lost. See my comment above. Booker was in good position, but the receiver eluded his tackle twice.
To clarify, Booker missed 1 tackle on 2 different plays.
Has anyone that has been paying close attention to the DT play know if Hamilton is making enough plays that is keeping Garrett, Togiai, or Vincent on the sidelines? I seem to notice those three flashing when they are in there but can't say that Hamilton has stood out to me at all (sans the cartwheel into the Purdue punter). I could very well be wrong, but I'd like to see those younger guys playing more. They seem to have earned it.
Fields of Dreams
Those three should be getting at least 50% of the snaps Hamilton and Landers are getting. I don't think Landers has shown any of the spark of last year or early this year...his movement seems backwards and runs inside with out much LB play are even more successful with the playing mostly only 2 DTs.
Browning really needs to see the field more. Browning>Borland
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Why is everyone clamoring for Booker? He has been benched 2 seasons in a row and now looks totally lost as a backup. He is an athletic freak but probably the worst actual linebacker on the team.
I used to be a big fan, but then he got hurt and when he played he was average at best. He is now a 5th year player with one month left. They gave him a chance and he didn't do anything with it. Back to the youth.
I still like Harrison, Hilliard and Browning as starters. Browning looked good when he was in against Nebraska but was in for only 15 plays. Hilliard got one shot at starting and that was it. No way Borland or Werner are better.
Obviously have to put Weber on the bench after two fumbles. Am I the only one that thinks dobbins misses a lot of holes? seems to dance and then go the wrong direction. Had a great game but I think it could have been better. He finally put his head down and drove people backward with contact at the line like he was doing all of last year.
Weber had a couple of nice runs with good reads down the field, but it looks to me like he misreads the blocking at the line of scrimmage more than does Dobbins.
Hilliard Browning Harrison Jones should play well before "champions" Borland and Werner. It would not be surprising if this apparent coaches' favorite stuff is contributing to the lack of spark on this team. The potential for transfers is there.
There is something that is contributing to the lack of desire on the team, and I've been wondering what it is. You are probably spot on with your assessment too. If anything it is causing some turmoil within the position groups. My thought originally was too many potential "stars" not caring any longer for the team and more about me, but I think I was wrong.
After all my time in the military and being a part of many "teams", all it takes is one negative thing to hold you back. Your morale suffers along with your motivation to contribute. Ultimately it causes sides to be taken and other discourse. Something does need to happen with this team, I think one of the easiest potential fixes is mixing in more PT for all of these players. No better way to weed out the stars but trial by fire.
Blessed to be a Buckeye
Werner is without a doubt the worst LB on the field. After 517 snaps played and somewhere in the neighborhood of 76 missed tackles, I can't really blame any one of our sitting LB's if they up and left. This is a travesty of unrealistic preception and it is being seen in the play of all those on the defensive side of the ball. I used to be on the fence about this but I really am no longer. Someone in the media needs to ask UFM straight up about his playing favorites at the LB spot. It surely can't hurt. They made the switch so they see it.
Hey Cancer! This ass kicking is brought to you by the Guernsey county mafia. Give it Hell 84!
Another way to look at this is who is on the field and either reminding you of or making you forget: McMillan, Shazier, Lee, Perry, Hawk, Lauranaitis, Baker, Wilhelm, Katzenmoyer, Tovar, Spielman, etc.? Answer: No one.
Harrison reminds me of Powell. Borland reminds me of Rolle. Werner reminds me of Kelly (Rob), saddening I know. And the others don’t have enough film for me to draw comparisons. My thoughts which mean nothing but I get your point.
I saw Booker miss one tackle when he was in on a play where he had to defend a WR after a pick. Although he missed a tackle, he was NOT out of position. Sheffield missed a tackle on the same play. Werner missed multiple tackles and looked like a complete clown. It's unclear to me why the coaches, along with the writer of this article, are so biased against Booker.
+1 up vote - spot on
They’ve got to be the most frustrating 8-1 Ohio State team ever. I think a drastic change late in the season (coaching and/or starters) would either lead to a championship or like an 11-2 record.
Guys like Borland and Werner miss tackles game in and game out but never get yanked. Others like Booker are benched after screwing up after a couple of plays. They never get another shot! The best guys aren't playing and haven't been all year long!
Meyer loves Werner, hes said as much and mentions him on the regular and without much prompting. Werner is not going anywhere close to the bench any time soon. Bet on it!
Hilliard and Browning were the best in the country at their positions coming in...and they are sitting behind two slow guys that are both younger than Hilliard and same age as Browning. Sorry but that does not add up. I refuse to believe that they were over rated recruits and Borland and Werner were under rated. I feel bad for Hilliard because he is an Ohio Guy and now he is behind younger less talented guys.
Had all year to work them in...now all we got is Little Pete and the Air Tackles.
