Tyrone Willingham... Holy crap, there's a name I had completely forgotten.

Eat shit, Sparty. Go Buckeyes.

HS

Yep. I remember Willingham.

I've lived in Seattle since 1999. He was the only coach to go 0-12 (2008) at Washington in 119 years, and his .229 winning percentage was the worst in school history.

Dear STATE,
I know that I have sometimes given the impression that I’m one of these ‘Fair weather fans’, but this is not the case. My deep affection for you (), requires tough love and stern lectures, via the television set. And so it is November... we’re 1-0!!
I’ve taken the liberty to check Saturday’s weather forecast in East Lansing Mi.(site of your next road game [fyi]). There will be no precip, but the temperature will be cold/crisp ! You must review the importance of your defensive unit to  hit and tackle hard and play NO SOFT ZONE COVERAGE!!  Pressure everywhere ! Go to a straight 4-3-2-2 know your assignment scheme. Please, no jumping around BS, non-pressure soft ass craparino’. Sparty will not change what they do offensively, so I expect stay-at-home get pressure- key the QB and that RB of theirs !! Two picks & one fumble recovery is also required of you. Thanks again for the Love we share, and here’s to a Clean slate heading into our Thanksgiving Weekend Donnybrook along the banks of the ‘ole Olentangy river w/ that evil James Hairball’s (spelling?) michigan squadron

This is actually the first year since Tressel took over that Ohio State can get revenge for some of those 90's years.  Think about it.  During the 90's the Buckeyes were formidable.  Cooper could recruit, and he could coach, unless he went north of 80.  Many times the team was expected to just blow up Michigan and storm to the NC and would come home with a loss.  Since Tressel took over, Michigan's coaches have sucked badly, their teams have been pretty awful, and their players have been a whole lot of disappointment.  This is the first year in a while they have a competent coach, with HIS players, and the real chance to go the distance.  Sound familiar?

THIS is the first year we can finally return the favor.  All the years before were just getting caught up on the overall record.  Now its time for payback.

I know its MSU week, but some bastard with a Michigan hat walked by and said "this is our year baby" and I needed to type something out before I threw a desk chair at him.

Ramzy's comments about the in-stadium gameday experience perfectly captured what's going on.  For those of us inside, the ceaseless commercial breaks go on forever,  The commercial break - one play - another commercial break sequence is particularly aggravating.  They've added a timeout "countdown clock" this year, I guess to give the fans some idea of how long the torment will last.  But that usually waits about 10 seconds from the actually stoppage of play to start.  Then last week it jumped up to a max of 3 min 50 sec from the previous 3:35, so I guess the timeouts are getting even longer!  We had friends in from Germany to attend the Minnesota game and when I asked how they liked the game, they said there "was too much time with nothing happening".  And these are people that watch SOCCER all of the time!

HS
CowCat's picture

Totally.

Think about the math. You can watch an entire game recap on Youtube in 40 minutes, including key penalties and some replays. That puts the actual play time at about 35 minutes at best.

But we're there for almost 4 hours???  I understand the ball needs to be reset, and plays must be called. But the TV timeouts have made things ridiculous.

I can understand the end of each quarter and halftime, but switching to ads because of a penalty is absurd.

Think about the math. You can watch an entire game recap on Youtube in 40 minutes, including key penalties and some replays. That puts the actual play time at about 35 minutes at best.

For what it's worth, you're actually being extremely generous here because your 40-minute Youtube/DVR recap still usually includes the pre-snap time when the ball is being set / waiting on coaches play calls / substitutions / etc: If you measure the time with a stopwatch and only count the game time as the time between "ball snapped" to "whistle blows play dead", it generally works out to around 10-15 minutes of real playing time.

Obviously there's no practical way to remove that dead ball time between snaps, but worth noting.

HS
CowCat's picture

That's what I'm saying, Lighteyes. I am being generous, but it is still absurd.

OSU makes plenty of money. They'll net over $20 million from the Michigan game alone in ticket prices at face value. When you're paying $190 a ticket to sit on a cold bench in November, you want to see a game that is isn't interrupted.

They've added a timeout "countdown clock" this year

Interesting. There's also a guy who walks on the field during TV timeouts -- usually around the 25-30 yard line -- and stays there until a couple seconds before they come back from commercial. I used to watch him to know when the game would resume.

when I asked how they liked the game, they said there "was too much time with nothing happening".  And these are people that watch SOCCER all of the time!

Soccer is basically non-stop for 45 min., 15-min break, and another non-stop 45 min. While there may not be as much scoring in soccer, there is very little time that something is not happening.

HS
ToetotheFace's picture

The best thing about soccer is the complete lack of commercials. I don't like their league structure, but it is why I can get in to the cups and world events for Soccer. It may not be as entertaining of a sport for me, but there are no breaks.

And as well, even though Tuf Borland did allow a tight end to get position on him and make a one-handed catch, Borland was also flagged for PI without benefit of making contact with the TE.  I sometimes wonder how the ref can announce these calls with a straight face.

AGREED, Sniper.  Real people (hand picked Chevy lovers).  I guess they think we're all stupid.

We owned a 2015 GMC Terrain and were planning on trading it for a 2018 model.  Then GM offered an extra $3000 cash incentive to NON-GM owners.  Bye-bye GM.  We traded that GMC Terrain in on a 2018 Honda CR-V.    We really should thank GM because the CR-V is a much nicer vehicle for less money.

That being said, I was looking to unwind the other night and only had a bottle of Basil Hayden's Kentucky straight bourbon and I actually really enjoyed it - had myself two decently sized glasses and slept like a baby. I searched old posts of yours to see if you had ever recommended it and it turns out you did back in ~2015 as a potential starter whiskey.

This is all to say that now that I've found one I enjoyed straight, are there any recommendations on where to go from there?

If you enjoy Basil, you will probably enjoy higher-rye mash bill bourbons or rye itself. I think you're referring to this guidance on how to find bourbons. Lexington is comparable to Basil, but priced so that you'll have extra money left over for snacks.

Wait, the Buckeyes are better in the 2nd half than in the first? But I see the same penalties, the same (lack of) intensity from the players, the same lack of run blocking and the same bonehead defensive play after intermission. So it must be the coaches making adjustments to the game plan. That can't be though because I've heard all season long that 7 out of our 10 assistants need to be sent packing, not to mention the few cries that Meyer himself needs to go. I'm so confused.

Your description of the game day experience is spot on.  I haven't lived in CBus in years, but try to make it back to at least one game a year.  This year, we were there for the MN game.  The crowd was so quiet, there were tons of empty seats (I know, I know, it was MN), and the whole t-shirt throw and corporate feel to it was so disappointing.  I'd much rather spend my hard-earned money to hear the band during the many breaks and honor OSU teams from the past.  Enough with the corporate BS.  I know it pays the bills, but the experience leaves a lot to be desired.

Buckeyejen

HS
ronaprhys's picture

We were there for the same game and yes, I noticed the quiet.  I think it's a combination of the fans expecting that game to be a pretty easy win and then getting disappointed with all of the big plays.  Kind of took the crowd out of it.

HS
Lighteyes's picture

Agreed. I went back for the Indiana game this year, which was my first time attending a game in Columbus in almost a decade* and had the same experience. I actually met up with a friend who still lives in Columbus the night before and he warned me ahead of time how completely commercialized it was...and he was entirely accurate.

Also, the fact they had a t-shirt cannon irritated me to no end. Not to get all "old man yells at cloud" soapbox, but...that's a gimmick for trying to keep fans engaged for a meaningless game in a half empty building - mediocre NBA teams, minor league hockey, MLB stadiums in mid-July, etc.

*Once you graduate and move away from Columbus, it's often legitimately cheaper/easier to go to a bowl game (especially a non-CFP one) than it is a Buckeye home game in Ohio Stadium.

HS
EffMarkMay's picture

Spot on - I moved back to Columbus from Chicago a few years ago and had former roommates come in for the Minn game (we took the WAGs for their first Ohio Stadium experience) and was bitterly disappointed with the atmosphere.  I remember having season tickets 10+ years ago and you couldn't sit don during game play (student section, C-deck, D-deck, you name it).  It's hyperbole, but it felt like we would see 3-5 plays, then the jerk off stride out to the 25 yard line indicating a TV timeout.

I completely agree about the expense of away games - we had a blast seeing the Buckeyes at Northwestern (always felt like more of a Bucks home game) - it was even cheaper to fly from Chicago to New Orleans for the LSU debacle and the game that never happened (Arkansas).

The increased frequency in commercials is the far and away #1 reason I watch only 1-2 football games per week now compared to 5-6 a few years ago. It's not even worth having on in the background while doing chores or playing with my kids if we're just going to get spammed by awful commercials for over half the air time. And the ones that sandwich kickoffs are always the impetus for me to turn it off. Meanwhile, as Ramzy implied, executives are looking everywhere BESIDES commercials for reasons of declining viewership (Papa John's?? KNEELING??!?? CONCUSSIONS?!!?!???) - I want to watch football, not "real people" (fucking kill me).

Can't think of the Spartans without thinking of the 1972 game.  OSU scored at the end to go ahead but the refs ruled that Greg Hare I think snapped the ball after time expired.  Hayes went nuts, and the game wasn't actually decided until later that night when the commissioner ruled MSU won.  Absolutely crazy.

I think Hayes despised MSU coach Duffy Daugherty.

Also let's not forget Michigan State causing Urban to eat cold pizza, rub his forehead in the front seat of a golf cart in Indianapolis back in 2013.  Spartans are ALWAYS dangerous.  Anyone remember the nightmare in 1998?

I understand that opinion from the outside, but think if you were judged by people who saw you just a few times on television.  Would they be able to judge you better than your family or co-workers who really know you?

We have zero idea what goes on inside the WHAC, we don't know the players or coaches personally, and have even less idea how hard it is to manage and coach over 100 people, with all the idiosyncrasies, egos, blind spots and human frailties.

I trust Urban Meyer.  If this season goes into the shitter, I believe that Meyer will have better seasons in the future if he stays. I remember Hayes having some gawd awful seasons, which the fans today would have had his head.  Every season is not a great season.  Some talented teams suck, some under talented teams over achieve.

I stopped going to live football games a few years ago. The last game I saw was the South Florida Bulls playing UCF. My son attended South Florida so we got good seats near the field on the 10 yard line. Too many loud, drunk students wanting to pick fights, too hot and way too many commercial breaks. Been to a few Florida Gator games. Great atmosphere but too many commercial breaks.

I also used to go see the Tampa Bay Bucs and Jax Jaguars games. Not as many drunks wanting to fight but endless commercial breaks. I don't go to live football games anymore.

The crazy thing is the one NBA game I attended was an Orlando Magic game when they still had Shaq. I HATE the NBA but my son and his buddy wanted to see them play and it was a birthday gift.

During commercial breaks and halftime that place was rockin with things to watch and do. A lot of fan interaction and imagination. I actually had a ball at an NBA game. Go figure.

IMO, the best football to watch live is Pop Warner and High School ball.

I'm not trying to win a popularity contest. I'm trying to win football games-- Woody Hayes

I'm with you on the NBA, and had exactly the same experience.  A buddy had a major birthday, and wanted to go see Shaq on his last visit to Seattle.  I went, and once was plenty.

A couple years later I was on an elevator in the grand old hotel in Seattle when, the car stopped and seemingly the entire Sonics lineup got in with me.  I felt like a fifth grader in with the high school kids.

My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.   - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)

On the Dobbins TD run gif, you can see the Nebraska LB (#14) get sucked up into line and instantly become a worthless guy with a helmet on as JK blows by. My point is that it's not a Werner thing, not a Davis thing, it's a scheme and execution thing.

God I hope we don't get tunnel vision on the run here.  I am concerned we will get so damned focused on running the ball we won't pass it when we should.  For example, at the start of the Nebraska game we started at Nebraska's 31 after that gift kickoff (why is that not a meme somewhere?) but Dobbins went 5 yards to the 26,  Dobbins 4 yards to the 22, Campbell -1 to the 23 and Dobbins 1 yard to the 22.   One of those 4 plays should have been a pass play.  Period.  I completely comprehend we were running well to begin with but I don't understand why we didn't give it to Dobbins on 3rd and try a pass on 4th.  I feel like we go too cute there.

We do slants, short passes and screens really well while MSU does run stopping arguably better than anyone but they do NOT stop short passes well at all.  We NEED to do what we do best.  I'm not saying we don't EVER try to run, I'm saying stick with the side of the bread that's buttered - stick with the short passes, slants and screen plays especially on 3rd downs and goal line situations.  I could be wrong but I think it's silly to think, this many games in, that we're magically going to figure the run game woes out against one of the best run stop teams in the nation.

The 2015 game keeps going through my mind.  The weather was awful yet we INSISTED upon trying to throw the ball or running with JT.  I mean, there's Zeke on the bench, dude had 12 carries the entire game.  12.  JT had 15 I believe.  I'm worried we'll try the opposite, we'll try to run all game and overlook opportunities to move the ball through the air.

We'll see I guess.
