Heat Check: Harrison Watch Continues Following Up-and-Down Month on Both the Field and Recruiting Trail

Get rid of everyone on the defensive staff (except Larry Johnson).  Take that money and back up the Brinks truck to Don Brown's house.  Double what scum is paying him.  Defensive recruits will follow...............

Or just hire back Chris Ash when Rutgers lets him go.

HS

I’d be in much more favor of backing the brinks truck up down in Tennessee and getting Coombs back and stopping along the way and grabbing Freeman from Cincinnati.

HS

the DB's were getting killed when coombs was here. so that's not going to make much of a difference

HS
napbuck's picture

The DB ‘s we’re getting killed when Coombs was here are you kidding me how many first round draft picks did the guy produce? Yeah maybe the were beat every now and then but no way were they not head and shoulders better than what they have been this year.

HS
JimmyVanP's picture

Yeah, they would get killed their first year playing, then the next year show out and become 1st round draft picks.  Sheffield and Arnette got killed last year, and are getting killed this year too.  Coombs is amazing idk what youre talking about

Another Schleprock named FromThe18 posted drivel just like this on last night’s Hurry Up:

OSU has to get rid of everyone on the defensive staff except Johnson and build an aggressive, but disciplined defense....it seems the 18 year cycle has finally come around and Michigan is going to be taking over the rivalry.

may want to stop rubbing one out to your urban meyer poster and open your eyes for once champ.  don brown runs circles around this defensive staff.  he did the same thing when he was at boston college.  i would venture to say our defensive recruiting has been much better than theirs, yet he has built a death star on defense.  why is that?  that defense is going to absolutely jail sex this team in a couple of weeks.  rational people can see this coming, but when you have you head so far up brutus' ass, you cant see that apparently.  maybe if you would take off those scarlet glasses and trying listening when the grown ups talk you can learn a couple of things.

Just hoping for a top 10 class and for this recruiting year to be over. Can't wait for daily news on the 2020 prospects.

It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.

With all the issues on and off the field, tagged along with uncertainty around the program this will be a tough year for OSU Recruiting no doubt. BuckeyeNation should prepare for some high starred loses.

HS

Yeah, being good upfront is critical on both sides. Michigan getting that sort of talent on the defensive line is killer.

Think Elam is a late surprise commit. Has been very quiet with his recruiting but I think Urban will put the pressure on and get him.

If forums had been widespread in 02-03, people would be complaining about the narrow margin of victories and the subpar recruiting class that year.

I have a coworker that has a son on the Olentangy football team. They feel certain Harrison goes to OSU. In fact, they were talking about it in the stands during the Whitmer playoff game.

Regarding Battle, one would think he has a chance to see immediate playing time with our struggles in the secondary. Fuller may leave, although he may fall victim to the entire defense being subpar and be forced to stay.

HS

I have a friend from high school who’s son plays for Olentangy as well and they are of the mind that OSU has been his choice throughout the process and that hasn’t changed.

I think some of these defensive kids see the writing on the wall with Ohio State’s defense coaches. I think these kids know there is going to be a shake up and the only one for sure is staying is Johnson. That only hurts Ohio State with the kids that want to enroll early such as Harrison.

HS
jamesrbrown322's picture

I’d say Grinch almost assuredly stays. IMO, it would have to be an absolute dumpster fire to can a position coach after only one season, and I don’t think that’s the case with Grinch. It’s been bad, but not unsalvageable.

Uncertainty about the stability of the coaching staff surely has a major influence on recruits.  They hear talk from other team's recruiters and it has to have an effect.

I'm of the mind that this is Coach Schiano's defense, with final input to some (how much?) extent from Coach Meyer.  Coach Grinch has not, ultimately I'm guessing, had a primary influence on the defensive scheme.  He's been consulted and listened to, but, ultimately, Coach Schiano makes the call.  Responsibility for the play of the defense, from a coaching standpoint, has to be through Coach Schiano. Other defensive position coach's responsibility will have to be gauged by someone more knowledgeable of the specifics of the situation, most likely Coach Meyer himself.  Let's hope that football considerations dominate that evaluation.

Why would it affect Harrison? He is the best D Line coach in college football. Aside from him retiring, I don't see him going anywhere.

HS
kmp10's picture

Meyer's instability/unease/uncertainty/health/reputation as a one who bolts before or just when things are starting to falter is hurting recruiting, and Meyer not coming out and saying, "Barring my death, I will be at Ohio State for the foreseeable future" is allowing *ichigan to make up considerable ground, and not just in Zach Harrison's case. As long as he refuses to emphatically commit, and until he presents a defiant attitude that this program isn't going anywhere, well, the one thing which Meyer always delivered, top five classes, will be no more. Meyer has lots of work to do... either do it with 100% commitment, or step aside, because the doubt surrounding this program is a problem, and it's all tied to Meyer. Everyone is waiting on him to reaffirm his commitment. Staff, recruits, administration, parents, supporters... everyone.

The concept of the board is a confusing one. Isn't it supposed to be ranked in terms of "momentum," which has been admitted before as a fairly fluid and murky concept? If so, Zach Harrison, who has been #1 on this for forever, should definitely not be there anymore. This has been a subject of discussion/question on this series for a long time. In the end, it's recruiting news, and is pretty informative so it's nbd, but it might be worth revising this.

HS
bucks_4_life's picture

The way I've always understood it they rank the players by need. Zach Harrison has been our number 1 target since this started and will be until he signs on the dotted line.

The juice is worth the squeeze

HS
Byaaaahhh's picture

It wouldn't be the first time I remembered something incorrectly, but I thought it was a combination of momentum and "likeliness to commit," which TBH is somewhat close to momentum.

HS
ELJTSA76's picture

If that were true, the board would loom quite different. Wright and Harrison would not be at the top, if you believe the author’s commentary is true.

HS
Byaaaahhh's picture

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm saying. It's contradictory to my understanding of it. And my understanding may be mistaken, but that's what I remember being said when the column was first introduced.

HS

It is called “Heat Check,” but maybe we should be calling it “Wish List.”

They’re going to land a top 15-20 class so it could always be worse. Honestly, I can live with trailing teams from other conferences in recruiting. However, getting dominated by Harbaugh on the recruiting trail, particularly with the Harrison miss, really sucks.

Take this FWIW, I was with a member of the Olentangy coaching staff last weekend and he said Harrison's phone background is him in a Michigan uniform. Have also heard Battle likes Alabama a lot now and I doubt we are getting Darnell Wright...... awesome.

Help we've fallen and we can't get up. This is bad news on several levels. Isn't an off year when you don't finish 2nd but you're the number 5 class. We're looking into the teens ? Did our top recruiting guy retire in August ?

HS
blu.fan's picture

Well, calling it a retirement is putting it nicely. But yes, you did have a staff person who was reputed to be good at recruiting, if not a whole lot else. I think it probably is better for you that he left the staff.

Don't get caught watching the pant dry.  Harrison might be another Carman.  Past time to start offering some other DEs.  Stripling (4*) down in Texas is undecided.  We have had luck in Texas so we could start with him.

HS

Might be a long shot but we have not offered the number 1 DE who is leaning towards Oregon. California to Ohio is rare but we should want all of the best.

It’s November. WAY too late to begin building relationships for ‘19. You just don’t walk in the door and say “Ohio State is here!”

HS
buckeyeleafe1's picture

Why are we offering all these in state kds at the last minute? We have 4 star kids that has just been offered in the last few months.  I love our staff at Ohio State but, why is it so late? #putthefencebackup

HS
Byaaaahhh's picture

Urban's talked about this a lot. If you pull the trigger on in-state kids early, they're more likely to make a commitment to OSU before you've had a chance to see how their development turns out in their late junior or senior years. However, with out of state kids, you have to start the relationship early because they don't know as much about you or you aren't on their radar as much.

If it's REALLY late, it could just be that they weren't at the top of the list before but other options aren't panning out so the focus drops down to the next best in their evaluation.

HS
TkeBuck's picture

this program's total dysfunction is out of the bottle. every unit appears in disarray, the bosa thing, coach's health uncertainties, and the apparent incompetence of some of the staff. we may realistically fall out of the top 10 rec classes for '19 and that's probaby going to bleed over into the next several years. the other thing is that we keep waiting til the last minute to go after these ohio kids as if we can just suck 'em in after we lose out on our tip picks. if i was one of these kids and other programs showed me more love, i'd say 'go eff yourself' when tOSU came knocking this late in the cycle. i think tOSU has squandered what was until recently called our "embarassment of riches."

The Harrison potential defection is concerning because of the "optics" of a Columbus stud going to our rivals but I think we shouldn't be overly concerned about it…nor should be get excited about a #2 or #3 class (like 2017).

In 2017, the 24/7 Top 100 players in our recruiting class were Chase Young, Jeffrey Okudah, Baron Browning, Shaun Wade, Wyatt Davis, Trevon Grimes, J.K. Dobbins, Josh Myers, Tate Martell, Isaiah Pryor, and Haskell Garrett.

In 2016, the 24/7 Top 100 in our class were Nick Bosa, Jonathan Cooper, Demario McCall, Austin Mack,  Dwayne Haskins, Binjamin Victor, and Keandre Jones.

I'd submit that Bosa, Haskins, and Dobbins are the only ones who have so far demonstrated at the college level that they were worth their Top 100 ranking.  Some, like Davis, Grimes, Myers, Martell, McCall, and Jones have hardly made a ripple or are gone.

So while losing Harrison would look bad, I'm not sure there's any solid history to support that he'll come back to haunt us.

Nothing is too difficult for the person that doesn't have to do it.

HS
blu.fan's picture

As his been said repeatedly, Harrison wasn't born and bred a Buckeye fan, and moved to Columbus relatively late. Being near TOSU for high school is different from being a lifelong fan.

However, it isn't rocket science. You need solid line play on both offense and defense. I'd be more concerned about Jack Sawyer, if I were you. He is a 5 star SDE from Pickerington in the 2021 class, and just visited unofficially for the Michigan - Penn State game. Here's what he said:

“I’m feeling really good about (Michigan) right now,” Sawyer added. “Their defense is obviously the best in the country, and I’d say that plays a factor in how I feel about them as well.”

Michigan makes Sawyer feel like a member of the family, which sets Wolverines apart from the other schools he is considering.

Sawyer is ranked No. 3 in the 2021 class, No. 1 at defensive end and No. 1 in Ohio, according to 247Sports.

I don't know if he is being slow played by TOSU, but that's the kind of loss that will hurt even more than Harrison. One DE coming to Michigan is an anomaly. Two or more is a trend.

Incidentally, the top 4 targets for Michigan in 2021 are in the top 50 nationally and are either on the DL or OL, Three of the 4 are from Michigan or Ohio. Warriner with the OL, and Mattison with the DL (with Brown as DC) mean that Michigan has solid coaching. They are opening the vault for all three, and at least for Mattison and Brown, they aren't going anywhere at their age. I'm sure they will do whatever they can to keep Warinner happy and ensconced as OL coach at Michigan for a long time.

I completely agree. Look at TTUN. We have been making fun of Khakis' inability to land a top 3 classes, but look at how those recruits are performing right now.

HS
James Varney's picture

Revealing list. So Keandre Jones was top 100 in 2016. The guy who just blocked a punt while we've watched out LBs struggle all year? Gee, the coaches must really be brilliant keeping him on the bench all the time.

Victor is inexplicable. If the Penn State game didn't turn him around it's not going to happen. He was rotten right out of the gate v. Nebraska when it was clear the game plan called for him to step up.

Cooper and McCall, for whatever reason, don't look like they pan out as big stars. But Browning? I'm sorry, but I really feel for this kid. I think he could be spectacular and has been ill served by the coaching at Ohio State.

Beat Michigan!
