I heard a rumor that Adrian Martinez is having some academic issues and might not be playing on Saturday.

Heard something similar, but not exactly the same.  Supposedly Haskins attended the game as the guest of a player and got a discount on the tickets, but still paid.  That could be part of the issue.  But then also, during the second quarter he was found in the mens room of the second floor concourse selling between 20 and 30 lbs of pure uncut Colombian cocaine.  The responding officer is actually an OSU fan so I think they managed to keep it pretty hush hush, but we'll see if anything comes out of it.

Dunno, just what I heard.

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

Did he pay for the coke, or was he selling a gift he got from someone?  That will make all the difference.

HS
BrutusB's picture

I believe he was selling it at market rates, and thus not getting a benefit available to non-athletes.  So should all be fine IMO.

I did see on his Instagram story that he was indeed at the game on Sunday..

HS
fenger's picture

Haven't heard about an "investigation" but I did see it on his Instagram story where he was in the luxury box with captions supporting Antonio Brown (I don't remember the exact verbiage) on Sunday. If you remember, he trained with AB in the spring break, so they certainly are friends, https://www.instagram.com/p/BgUYKFxhkHQ/?hl=en

I immediately thought about potential compliance issues when I saw the IG story in these day and age's NCAA compliance hypersensitivity. In any case, maybe someone who knows these rules better can comment if there's anything to this.

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

Still don't see how this would be an issue.  AB is by no means an OSU booster or an NFL agent, Haskins isn't doing anything anyone else would/could do.

HS

If Haskins suddenly announces his intentions to transfer to Central Michigan, this story will actually mean something...........

HS
Gobucks2112's picture

So basically what this sounds like it equates to is if I was a football player, a friend of mine, maybe someone I live with, someone I knew growing up or anything similar, had an extra box seat, maybe they won a contest, maybe they are rich, doesn't matter, but they ask me to go with them, I therefore go, and that would be considered a violation? I would be hard pressed to see how that is a problem. I get that this is from Antonio Brown, and its a box seat at an NFL game, but if they are friends and Brown gets tickets and he gives them to friends, not sure of the issue here .

TOS has a poster (Magicmike) who started a thread on the same subject.  The Steelers’ player was Antonio Brown.

Ironically Magicmike was the same guy who posted what he heard about how (and some why) Grimes left the program.  He’s been lambasted for his “reporting”, but I’d heard the same story and others on THIS site said they’d heard the same re: the Grimes situation as well.

I don’t have an IG account but when I went to look @ Haskins’, I didn’t see a post, but it may have been taken down.

HS
Zonabuck's picture

Didn’t Haskins and some other team’s QB work out in Florida with AB last summer?  It’s not a new relationship, and I think compliance would be helping to educate him on where the boundaries lie long before this weekend.

HS
BUCKAROOTIMESTWO's picture

The issue wouldn’t be his relationship with Brown, but there could be a question on IF Haskins paid for his ticket (even as Brown’s guest) and if so, was what he paid its actual value.

I saw the IG story and wondered myself how he was sitting in a luxury box at the Steelers game and if any type of violation would be brought up. I know Antonio Brown and him are pretty tight. Haskins worked out with AB over the offseason and AB frequently comments on Haskins' IG photos.

Because it was on Haskins IG story it was gone after 24 hours. Showed Haskins sitting in a box holding one of AB's kids and then a few other random photos of the game.

This NCAA violation story definitely wouldn't surprise me. I have a full time job and the only time I can sit in a luxury box like that is when tickets are given to me. Can't imagine how a college athlete who probably doesn't have a job could afford it unless it came from the parents. But then again, it could be absolutely nothing.

On the contrary, you have to think he ran it by OSU to make sure it was alright, right?

I think Urban should tell the team "we aren't throwing a single pass until we have over 100yards rushing and I don't care if they put 15 men in the box."  We either get tough and hammer the rock or we flame out.  It's up to the players and A/Cs how the game goes.  So DH missing would be a lot less of an issue anyway.

HS

With 15 men in the box, I imagine we will move the ball pretty well.  Might not get many rushing yards though.

HS
jpfbucks01's picture

So here is how the NCAA may see this potential violation

1) Haskins relationship with Brown does not predate him being the QB at OSU, they knew each out because he was the QB at OSU. Prior relationship means a relationship prior to being a SA. Likely if Haskins is not the QB at OSU, brown never knows him. Hence the fact that they have known each other for maybe a year is somewhat irrelevant.

2) Getting a free or discounted ticket then is a violation of extra benefits, ie he got the ticket because of his "friendship" with Brown who he knows because he is an SA, not because Haskins and Brown have been friends since Haskins was say in HS.

3) The issue then is how much of a benefit did he get?

If he paid full price for the ticket, no violation

If he paid a discounted price or it was free ie below face value, then violation

A luxury box ticket for a Steelers at the highest level have a face value of about $378.

Troy Smith got suspended 2 games for a $500 benefit in 2004/5.

Per the ncaa website, For Bylaw, violations in which the value of the impermissible benefit is $100 or less, the involved student
athlete(s) must repay the value of the impermissible benefit to a charity prior to competing in the next contest

So if the face value was worth $378 and Haskins paid less than $278 for it, then he could be looking at a suspension

Of course i dont know if any of this is true in terms of him getting the ticket for a discount or free, but if he did and the value of the discount was more than $100 he could potentially be suspended for a game

From an NCAA PPT file showing common penalties (withholding means suspended from eligible games)

Greater than $100 to $400 = 10 percent withholding and repayment. (in a 12 game regular season this is 1 game)

Greater than $400 to $700 = 20 percent withholding and repayment.(in a 12 game regular season this is 2 games and what Troy got)

Greater than $700 = withholding of 30 percent and repayment.

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

1) Haskins relationship with Brown does not predate him being the QB at OSU, they knew each out because he was the QB at OSU.

I guess that depends on who paid for Haskins to attend Sports Academy over Spring Break.  If OSU paid, which I would think would be a violation in itself, then yes they knew each other because of OSU.  If Haskins family paid, you can't really say that.

HS
jpfbucks01's picture

CT you may have a technical point there in terms of how they met. But again the ncaa could still say that Haskins would not have been elegible for the camp had he not been an SA at OSU.

The NCAA interprets this very clearly really, if the benefit received could have been gotten by any other student at the university under normal conditions then it is NOT a violation. If the benefit is not able to had by per say, "normal" students, then it is impermissible.

Since i am going to assume that normal OSU students would not have been eligible to attend that camp as they were not actual college athletes, then it may become impermissible again

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

Since i am going to assume that normal OSU students would not have been eligible to attend that camp as they were not actual college athletes, then it may become impermissible again

Wouldn't that also make attending the camp an impermissable benefit though?  Not that anything the NCAA does actually makes sense.

The NCAA would then also somehow have to explain how a regular person isn't capable of being friends with someone with a luxury box at an NFL stadium as well.  I could see if it were an agent that invited him, or an NCAA coach while he was a recruit, but in this case he went because a friend invited him.  Something that any college student, or really any person overall, has the ability to do.

HS
QuadCitiesBuckeye's picture

Just a follow up on the dumb NCAA rules--during the reign of Jim O'Brien as the Bucks basketball coach---there was a player from London England that the Bucks were interested in signing.  An assistant coach met the player at the London airport.  They each got a coke and discussed OSU.  When it was time to leave, the assistant coach told the player that he had to pay for his own coke because it would be a violation of NCAA rules if he paid for it.  Good grief---is it not time for the Super Power Conferences to form their own league and get rid of the NCAA as the governing body?  GO BUCKS!

I heard that after LSU beats Bama tomorrow the Tigers will play Georgia in the SEC title game. The title  game will go into quintuple double overtime and at 2 AM they will declare it a 65-65 tie. That way LSU and Georgia will get in the playoffs as co-champions. Of course Bama will also get in because their only loss was to the SEC (co) champ. The "eye test", right. Then we will have 3 SEC teams in the playoffs. It's only fair, right?
