The Situational: Scary Movie

Great Situational as usual, Ramzy. I'm not a bourbon man, but I'll tip a frosty one to Meyer breaking the glass and pulling the lever on more than one of his assistants. Go Bucks and enjoy Dubgate.

I survived Cooper, and I hate Tai Streets.

HS

Which he is likely to do.  Then again, this fanbase has to remember that if there is a semblance of a house-cleaning in January of Meyer's staff, it'll be the 2nd one in less than 3 years.  While we may "cheer" that, just remember the rest of the sports world will look at that, accurately, as a reflection of Meyer's hiring and selection abilities more than anything else.  If carried out, Meyer risks having the OSU football coaching caroussel as being similar, in a twisted and maybe exaggerated way, to the Steinbrenner Yankees of old.

So, I guess Taver fills the role of Billy Martin in that scenario? ;)

Ohio State looked very impressive not trying to run the ball last weekend.

So sad, but so funny!

On Nick Bosa, let's all agree that (i) he made the best decision for himself and vast majority of people in his position would probably have done the same, AND (ii) he quit the team as a captain.  Let's just leave it at that and never talk about this/him again.  Bringing up his stats feels a bit being a Nick Bosa apologist.  Let's just move on.

On the comparison between coach Tressel and Meyer segment, there was mention of Luke Fickell being the interim head coach.  I'm guessing I'm not alone when I say there are very few Buckeye fans who would place any short of blame on him for the less than stellar performance expected of the program.  This perfectly illustrates that most fans are reasonable.  What annoys fans are people who are paid millions and are supposed to be the best at their jobs but who keep allowing the team to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

I thought at the time and still feel that had Bosa come back in early December and tried to get in player shape before whatever bowl game, he'd have a microscope on him by the pro scouts that wouldn't be in his best interests before the combine season started, so I guess I understood where he was coming from. Keep out of the spotlight while healing.  I doubt if it even occurred to him that his teammates would be better with him there and not playing. When the family business is pro football I'm not sure you think that way.  Also not sure his legacy should be damaged for that decision, but with a lot of fans this is going to be like that memory of your wife's that she brings up every time she gets ticked about something else.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

That crazy final weekend in 2007 was still one of my favorite weekends of college football watching of all time. Just insane flipping back and forth and watching all these teams losing.

Has anyone ever put together a minute by minute "ticker" of that day? I've seen stuff encapsulating the entire season but I just think about like one going over everything crazy that happened that day and at what time

I'd argue that if Urban intends to stay for 4+ more years we will absolutely see coaches fired, or as Urban typically does, ushered, out of Columbus. There is no way he's planning to trot the same coaches out onto the field next year if things aren't vastly improved over the next 4 weeks.

1. How quickly can Ohio State's offense adapt to Dwayne Haskins' arm from J.T. Barrett's legs?
2. Could the secondary finally fail to reload?
3. Which opponent has the best chance to be this year's Iowa?

#2-3 clearly came true, but I would argue that #1 isn't going nearly as well as we'd like, but for different reasons than we'd expect. Who'da thought the O line would be the primary reason we are unable to run the ball?  Seems like we can run block or pass block(?) but can't do both effectively. So we actually haven't made the transition to a strong pass QB: except for the QB and receivers. So here we are; a second or third place Big XII team.

Well, I've already been tricked by Purdue.

Ohio State being ranked in the double-digits in the first CFP poll is optimal because as you can see above, 100% of the time it works every time. Stars are aligning.

I support this. However, I want to point out that teams ranked from about 16 thru 25 are an alignment of stars in support of committee favorites, the SEC and ACC - and, oh by the way, Notre Dame. The respective rankings of Texas A&M, Mississippi State, NC State, Syracuse, and Virginia is criminal.  Those teams are so grossly overrated and, by extension, it smears the B1G directly.

With those five teams obnoxiously over-ranked, they cast aside Northwestern and Michigan State, if not Wisconsin also, who are ranked far, far below their value in the FPI and S&P+ rankings.  By casting those teams aside, they are propping up the resumes of the chosen teams, and shitting on the resumes of the shunned.

But, for the Bucks, it all comes down to winning.  Sorting out the rest of the mess doesn't even matter if they can't do that.

Fair enough, 3M.   But in fairness, those 3 B1G teams each stepped in dog shit and can blame no one but themselves.  NW was curbstomped by Duke. Duke.   WI was beaten (with a healthy team - pre-injury) at home by BYU.  And Sparty, well, you don't know which team will show up on any given Saturday.   So......while I agree in theory with you, it is clear that the "Committee" is reverting to the earlier years of considering the Big Ten as bloated.....until proven otherwise, whether we like it or not.

HS
BUCKEYE3M's picture

I don't disagree that the B1G teams have warts. We're debating two and three loss teams though, that's to be expected.

Virginia? NC State? Syracuse? A&M? Hell, A&M's best win is a loss.

When you look at the B1G teams, they are all ranked an average of like 3-4 spots lower than their value in the FPI or S&P+, whereas the ACC teams are ranked like 16-17 spots higher than their average ranking in those indexes.

The SEC?  Hell, it just seems like business as usual to make the highest ranked one/two/three loss team be an SEC team.  It all promulgates the circular logic that the SEC is great, because the SEC is great, so great teams beat great teams and it's all justified because they're great.

HS
Nutinpa's picture

I won't disagree..   Yes, it appears the "punishments" for Big Ten teams in recent years have exceeded their crimes.  Whether we agree or not, we are still paying for the curb-stompings Michigan State took at the hands of Bama, and ours at the hands of Clemson in the cf playoffs two years in a row.   Both were pretty nasty skid marks that the Committee is having a hard time forgiving -- whether they admit or not, and they won't.

You would think it did, but when Wisconsin got dumped at home by BYU, Northwestern got thumped by Duke, Michigan lost a marquee match up with ND, and Purdue lost to Missouri (AND Eastern Michigan), it just reinforced the "see, they're not that good" perception that was still but one layer beneath the surface.

The B1G does have a super power - shooting itself in the foot!

Ramzy, you discuss a lot of bourbons that are for all intents and purposes impossible to get one's hands on... I'm curious, how do you go about procuring these gems? Do you treat yourself to expensive pours at bourbon bars or do you have an "in" in the distillery business that allows you to own some of these bottles?

Not living in Ohio helps. On Saturday night I went to the liquor store 5 minutes from my house in NJ and picked up a McKenna, a Midwinter Night’s Dram from a couple of Situationals ago and a Larceny at non-arbitrage retail prices, right off the shelf. For the ghost bourbons, that requires clubs, trades and conditions. But Colonel Taylor products are not in short supply unless the people in charge of distribution have chosen to do that. Four Grain is a limited release, but it’s still not ghostly. That should run, at most, $75.

Do you treat yourself to expensive pours at bourbon bars or do you have an "in" in the distillery business that allows you to own some of these bottles?

It’s a 95%/5% split of yes and yes.

Right on.  I will say that I think the development of Zone 6 has more to do with a quarterback with a laser-like arm than a change in the coach.  Take the Cardale Jones Magical Three Game Nirvana in 2014; the WRs looked mighty fine to me.

Maybe Smith wasn't the best WR coach, but he could recruit like hell's wrath.  In fact, you could argue that his killer recruiting ability led to all the Housewives of Orange County troubles at OSU this year.  And, his recruits are the ones scuffing up all the astroturf around the B10 this year.  If it weren't for his bad partner management skills, I would keep the guy.

"You're welcome for the house I built."

HS
brutus0717's picture

The receivers in 2014 were all coming along at their own pace the entire season and came together at the perfect time. Cardale, while I love him and he'll forever go down as a hero, gets entirely too much credit for the NC. Most balls were adjusted to at some point during the route, and the greatest catch of that stretch run was thrown by a WR.

Saying you would not do what Bosa did is like the liars who say they would not quit their job after nailing a 9 digit powerball win. The Walrus is my only sore spot with the Senator. There were some good linemen, but I think it was the cliche of "in spite of the coach". Just like now.

There are two elements of the "head" of this article that are amazing.

I'll start with this. I was just talking to my friend tonight and I described such a scene as "shock horror." I told him that my problem with today's horror movies over-exhaust this approach, making them unwatchable. Whereas, previous movies depended upon great phonological storytelling.

Anyway, I digress. This is my major point (and it has nothing to do with Ohio State football and since I have not yet earned the helmet stickers to create my own discussion, I thought that this was my best opportunity). There is a major issue working in college football. Actually, it's happening in the B1G. Actually, it's happening in the B1G East.

Spoiler Alert: It's Maryland. To reduce risk of further boredom, I'll get straight to the point from here. They "suspended" T.J. Durkin. A few months later, they reinstated T.J. Durkin. They then, almost immediately, fired T.J. Durkin. This is not how you do business. I do not know the details of this story. However, I do know that Maryland had several months to review these evidence and maybe a decision.

They made a decision. That decision was to give that man his job back. Less than 24 hours later, he lost that job.

But why?

New evidence?

I highly doubt it. Nope. It's because they folded to pressure.

As an overall liberal man (not to get political), are we allowing politics to deeply interfere with our sports?

brutus0717's picture

It was reported that university President Loh acted alone in firing him (D.J., btw). The Board of Regents has the power to fire Loh, which I believe he felt they would do if he fired Durkin. But Loh announced yesterday he would be resigning at the end of the academic year. I think he slept on his decision to reinstate and decided there were no fucks to give. JMO

Actually, I think the blowback to the regents not firing Durkin gave Loh the cover he needed to drop the axe without fear of recriminations. When the state governor issues a no-holds-barred lambasting, the regents could only tuck tails and cower in the corner.
