Would be nice to have him but not getting my Hope's up.....
"Life is not about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. THATS HOW WINNING IS DONE!!" - Rocky Ballboa
He's been recruited since the 9th grade and Ohio State has shown him love. Add that with Holtman's recent top 5 class(es) and his ability to make runs in the tourney and I'm sure tOSU will start looking like the old days with Randy Ayers or the early days with Thad Matta. Plenty to be excited about. Not sure why you have to be so negative about a potential big time recruit in state.
Great artcile Colin! Thanks for eating up some of my morning.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
For what it's worth, I think Ohio State has as good of a shot – if not a better shot – to land him as any other school. He greatly respects Holtmann and Pedon, and he likes the university. He's watched the Buckeyes for years and named everyone from Greg Oden to Deshaun Thomas to Aaron Craft. But like I wrote, I believe Loveday's recruitment is still in its early stages, so it'll take many turns, as all recruitments do. I tried to emphasize how much Loveday really doesn't know what he's going to do. The most animated he got was when he was explaining how people tried to corner him and ask him where he would end up, and he has to tell them he literally has no idea.
Extraordinary talent, extremely good grades, doesn't like to be hassled about where he is going!
He should be educated about Jerry Lucas and how his recruitment played out. Maybe even be introduced if possible!!
That applies to Coach Holtmann and his staff as well. Although, I'd be surprised if they are not aware of that story.
Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!
The info on Lucas should especially include Lucas's tale about how he learned to rebound and how he beat out much taller folks to play center on the Olympic Team because of that ability!
As a Rio Grande Graduate, I approve this message.
The lord of brevity.
You're not Bevo Francis, are you?
Love the Buckeyes
He'd be the world's tallest zombie if so................
Wow! Impressive highlights for sure, hopefully he signs with the Buckeyes.
"Old minds are like old horses; you must exercise them if you wish to keep them in working order."
Fantastic article Colin!
Sounds like this kid would be an incredible addition to the team, hopefully he likes what he sees from Holtmann & Co. and takes the life opportunities of Ohio State as strong arguments for coming to Columbus. Coach definitely has his work cut out for him with everyone jumping on the pile now (UK and Stanford especially, in my mind).
Good article. 24/7 seems to think Louisville might lead, but who knows. Kid has a good head on his shoulders regardless.
That would be baffling. But for some reason, despite everything that has gone down there, kids still want to play there.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
Very thorough and well-written piece. Always happy to hear about a kid from a small Ohio town who has the opportunity to go big time. Best of luck to him wherever he decides to go...hopefully he becomes a Buckeye. Always good to be able to keep talented in-state kids at the school.
Seems like a really good kid. Would love to see him in a Buckeye uniform!
Good stuff here Collin. Nice to see a recruiting story that is actually a story and not a summary of tweets/247 crystal ball updates. Hope we see more of this in the future.
Given where he's from, and given where the player he says he's patterning his recruitment after ended up, I wonder if West Virginia is our biggest competition here.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
In that particular area of WV, bordering SE Ohio/Huntington area-there is a lot of dislike of the Neer's, due to the proximity/fanbase of Marshall in the area. Also lots of tOSU love as well.
A big man that uses both hands shooting the ball, catches passes and can dribble.
This would be a big BOOM.
Go get the boy coach.
I had the privilege of seeing Mr. Loveday play against Ironton last season. He has the complete package that includes leadership. The only question is in the level of competition he has faced in SE Ohio. Of course we have seen that did not hold Joe Burreaux back at LSU.
Too much time spent at the North Heidelberg rather than the classroom. SSD 68-72
Excellent work, Colin. Really enjoyed the read.
Make preparations in advance. You never have trouble if you are prepared for it.
I don't know anything about basketball recruiting. To me this looks like a tall, lanky kid with athleticism, good ball handling skills, a nice shooter's touch, and good awareness in the paint and around the rim. All signs to me of a good player. I hope he learns how to go finish strong in traffic - throwing down dunks rather than lay ups. I think he needs to develop his strength in the paint to go from good to great. If at 7'1" he has the ability to finish with authority AND step out and make a 3 - that's a star.
And he's a 7' 1" junior!!
There may still be more growth coming at that age!!!
I'm sure he's an excellent student and I'm overreacting, but this is just wrong:
"All of a sudden, Gallia Academy’s athletic director pulled the then-freshman out of spanish class. He had some news for Loveday, who was just 14 year old.
“Get your stuff ready. You're going to go down. You've got a workout,” he told Loveday."
That is how it works. Coaches have to show up during school hours for things like this so it is properly monitored.
I get where you're coming from but....The hour-ish out of class for the workout has a much more positive effect on his future academics than anything he could learn in a HS Spanish class
Granted, I don’t interact with the community on here as much as this site has gotten more popular and insulated, but is it just me or is the editing on EW’s articles getting worse and worse? Seems like every time I open a new article there’s a blatant and obvious typo, grammatical error, or omission, often even in the first paragraph or two.
”who was just 14 year old.”
”He hadn’t even high school basketball game yet.”
”they’re going to be there long that you think” (this is a quote, but at least fix it and drop a sic in there)
Agree-us fans posting on a board is one thing, but an article written as a journalistic piece should be self-edited/copy-edited as a matter of professionalism.
“‘or something like that.? (no end quotation)”
”Coaches willing to fly into see him still shocks Loveday.”
”as coaches wrap up they 2019 cycle of prospect.”
Thanks for an in depth and thorough article, Colin.
As for those who want to look beyond the great content and use their red pencil, there are many places to go find classical literature. Who knows what the deadline was or whether the article was written or dictated and transcribed or dictated voice to text. More importantly, who cares.
Come for the content. Look elsewhere to sate your literary needs.
In-depth, lol. All that flowery language and you still screwed up the first sentence. And yeah, why have a quality standard? It’s better to rush to meet a deadline than to produce quality content.
A 7 footer playing point guard....must see TV. Hope we get him.
TG Proud Buckeye alumnus.
All I hear in all of this is this kid is Amir Williams with athleticism and heart and a better overall game. Go get him coaches.
Thank you for the basketball information... I really appreciate it.
Zach is a promising prospect, and it would be great to see him play for OSU.
I hope he keeps developing and learns to play "taller," perhaps at a big man camp. I'd like to see him hold the ball higher, where smaller players cannot dislodge it easily.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Got to watch him play in that D-II District Semi-FInal last season against my alma mater Fairfield Union. Last year size wise he reminded me a lot of how BJ Mullens looked at that same time when Mullens still played for Harvest Prep before transferring to Canal Winchester his Junior and Senior seasons, where BJ bulked up in size. It will do Loveday some good to get more size to him. In that D-II semi-final, FU's Colin Woodside who now plays football for Luke Fickel at UC (big size advantage) really was able to frustrate Lovedale with Woodside's body size versus Lovedale. But give him two years to improve his game and size he could be a good steal for OSU to pick up. I look forward to following D-II the next couple seasons to see where he ends up.
"Anything easy ain't worth a damn" - Woody Hayes
At 7'1" and 200lbs he needs to get on my patented seefood diet ASAP. See food, eat food.
I think probably 95% of the active members on here are on the same diet!
Hope to see Zach at the State Tournament for the next two years, as a prelude for him wearing the Scarlett and Gray.
I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.
He seems like a really bright kid, and I'm not talking about his gpa. He has a savvy about him that not a lot of kids his age have. I'm sure osu will be in his final four, the coaches seem to be genuine to him, which I'm sure they are.
There are a lot of us from GAHS who went on to tOSU. Hope he ends up with the good guys.
Tell him to bulk up on Remo dogs for lunch and Shake Shoppe shakes. He'll be 275 in no time!
Loveday looks good but he's not program-altering talent. Too skinny, needs some muscle.
Seems like a nice young man, too, although as I read the article, I found myself wondering if he had any idea of where he wanted to go.
Like I was reading the script to Blue Chips
