This has been the worst week of Ohio sports I have ever witnessed...

Yep.  I'm about to take a month long reprieve from 11w.  I don't need all the bad news all the time...Might have to stick my head in the sand for at least the rest of the "bye" week.

I'm sure no one is more disappointed than the man himself, and that being said I'd expect Kyle Snyder to bounce back from this.

I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...

Honestly watching the Paris match, this result doesn't surprise me. Last year Sadulaev was clearly much smaller but he still looked better, despite barely losing.

HS

Disagree. Sadulaev was gassed in Paris. Snyder gets better as matches go on. Sadulaev hit him with one move here.

Hope to see a fire lit under Snyder from this. Sadulaev was a monster this whole tournament and mowed through the field. He earned it.

No, not the entire year, just the week.

That's a Buckeye touchdown!

it would be one thing if it was a drawn out match and he loses, but to lose that quickly, that's the equivalent of something crazy like our football team getting beat by an unranked Iowa squad.  I mean, like impossible!

In seriousness though, it wasn't much of a match so I'm not so sure how epic the next meet will be other than Snyder being pissed off enough to make it more of a challenge.  He got straight up owned there.

They are unfortunately trending in different directions.  This might be good for Snyder in the long run...I think he needed to be humbled a bit.   The loss earlier this year didn't seem to do it.  Now he becomes the hunter.

The wrestling team is as strong as ever, and that still wasn't good enough for gold.  Russia is just a machine.

I've watched freestyle wrestling avidly and competed. They're technique is second to none. We might have the edge in athletes and maybe in training facilities, but they have taken wrestling to an artform way too often to just give that to roids. That being said, they do like to cheat. I mean that. They seem to like it, so it kinda sucks but is just how many of them are. To them I think its only cheating if you get caught. And they are right actually. At least in some respects. But I really really love theyre wrestling styles.

The sadulaev move is truly brilliant...he's in on the shot, snyder sprawls hips down and then grasps over Sadulaev's back to keep from getting driven backwards...it's a common defensive technique when someone is in on your legs. Normally snyder can then pivot and spin round back for 2 points...obviously Sadulaev has been watching that situation and they developed that move and planned it ahead of time...snyder never saw it coming because it's extremely dangerous...Sadulaev gives up on the shot - reaches behind himself (huge no no in wrestling) and traps snyders arms around himself - then just rolls and is now in control, on top and scoring back points....unbelievably well planned attack - probably why the coach said Snyder wasn't going to score a point (https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-wrestling/2018/10/98068/abdulr...)...this was their plan from the beginning and snyder never saw it coming.

Damn, that looked to be a hell of a move. Pinned Snyder while he himself was on his back, and then was able to roll over while maintaining the pancake on Snyder. (I don't know wrestling terms.)

HS
FireballMonkeyDragon's picture

I’m going to have to disagree with your breakdown of it.  To me looks like a modified “Peterson roll”. Something similar every pewee wrestler has learned from the time they strap on some shoes.  This was a much more advanced version against a great wrestler but I don’t think it caught Snyder by surprise.     I wouldn’t call it A brilliant game plan. He caught Snyder, it happens.

Peterson Roll here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXIRzs-z1zs

It's a reversal technique from a sit-out position - very low risk, as you post with your head and maintain belly to the mat.

Sadulaev roll: https://youtu.be/ZAC521WdGkU?t=56

Literally reaching behind his back, trapping the arm - then rolling to your own back while maintaining control of your opponent.

Snyder never saw it coming because he didn't change his body at all once his arm was trapped - no reaction from Snyder - he literally didn't know what was happening. Watch the youtube clip at 0.25 speed and you'll see - all he had to do was limp arm and stand up.

I wish I did - have a 4 year old girl and 1 year old boy so I'm currently on the U-5 girls soccer coaching train, lol - but hopefully soon enough with my son.

I wrestled 4 years of high school, but decided to play football in college. I'm no expert - but I did play the sport (and medal quite a few times).

We used to call that move the "reverse tip." It wasn't as common as a Peterson (and a more advanced technique), but it's been around since at least the early 90s.

It's not exactly stunning, my friend. Watch the Paris match. Sadulaev was already as good if not better then and he was smaller

Any chance 11w will get an interview with Snyder when he gets back to the states?  Curious  his breakdown of the tournament and specifically that match

It’s certainly not a black mark on Snyder’s career to lose to this guy. Get back in the gym, and train hard for the next rematch, Kyle!

HS
fishleehooker's picture

This will make Snyder better and to some degree I think he mighta needed it. He needs to get more turns in his arsenal and there are some improvements he can make still in his technique. His will, strength and conditioning are among the best ever. I think this will motivate him like no one knows.

Side note: Both he and Akgul trained together for this one and both had disappointing results. I bet the don't do that much of it now, but remain friends. Kyle's gotta find that next key to his goals.

HS
HeritageBuck's picture

Agree with both Joshie and Fireball. Peterson move incorporates the leg, but I think this could have been a planned "hail Mary" from the other camp. Snyder's clasp is akin to a grizzly bear. So hitting this move banked on Snyder holding on a little longer than normal. But it was executed very fast, and very effectively. I'm just surprised they tried it so early - so hat's off. Snyder will be back with a vengeance and rest assured he won't get caught in it again if we're lucky enough to see round III.

Heritage, good point I too am suprised he tried it just a minute into the match. He came out very aggressive.   Far too often big matches tend to see both wrestlers a bit on the conservative side.  Hats off to the Russian for the aggressiveness.     I hope to see a rematch and see Snyder and the USA back on top.

HS
JoshieD's picture

That's why I'm convinced it was pre-planned - it was literally the first exchange in the match...Snyder did what all wrestlers do when someone shoots in on you - sprawl out and pressure the head and neck of the shooter - once Sadulaev realized the shot wasn't going anywhere he just pulled this move and it hit perfectly. That is the definition of getting "caught." It's not cheap - but it feels cheap.

HS
j2gobucks's picture

It was a hell of a strategic decision, executed flawlessly.  High risk, High reward.  I dont consider it cheap because he had to have drilled and drilled and drilled that - its not a move you attempt against an equal competitor without supreme confidence it will work - and just the stones to attempt it in general.

The fact that it wont catch Snyder off guard next time kind of makes it cheap I guess, but its not like Tank wont have something else up his sleeve.  Next match should be a battle for the ages.

Everything that happens-good and bad-should motivate you to be persistent. ~JT

Would love to see the testing results for steroids. Last year Snyder was twice as strong as the russian and granted the guy bulked up from last year, but damn you don't gain that much strength especially when Snyder trains as hard as he does and surely didn't get weaker in the last 365 days.

I played football and power lifted after I was done and you don't make those type gains without illegal help. The kid is a great wrestler, but the strength thing was way too much of a gain to pin a stud like Kyle in the way he did. last year Kyle would have tossed him into the air if he tried to pin him backwards like that.

That's how winners play. We convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.

HS
CC's picture

Did you say that when Josh Perry or any of the other Bucks bulk up?

HS
Keyser Soze's picture

no, pay attention to what you comment on. I have the problem with the extreme strength gain. This is coming from a person that worked out his whole life, played college football, was completely natural and then tried using steroids and knew a bunch of other guys that used them too. I have seen all angles of strength and muscle growth on and off roids.

I never got an ounce over 450 on my bench after never missing a workout for 15 years and then in a 9 month period was able to bench 545 while on the juice. I was also able to rep 315 out 23 times. That is not natural and people that are in the same weight class as you would never be able to compete if you are using the right steroids and training regiment.

That's how winners play. We convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.

HS
bbb's picture

You're severely underestimating how strong the russian was last year in order to make the claim that somehow he's magically a billion times stronger this year. He gained some strength, yes, but not a ridiculous amount. He wasn't that far behind last year at all

HS
CC's picture

I was clear what I commented on.

You act like what he did was some brute force move, he caught Snyder, that simple.  It happens in wrestling.

Also he wrestled up last time so he had 11 pounds to gain.

Nothing more annoying than watching a fan yell "ROIDS!" when their guy doesn't win.

The reality is if he was on roids this time he was probably on roids last time when he lost.

HS
Eph97's picture

It is weird that both Snyder and Akgul had disappointing results in this tourney and they were training partners. IMHO, I think Kyle would be better served training more with smaller guys and working on his mat skills. DT to work on scrambling, and Dake to work on defense would be great to train with. Both the best in the world at their weight class. Sadulaev is always going to be faster and more skilled than Kyle; Kyle needs to up his game and counter.

HS
bwherbert's picture

Kyle will be back, and I'm sure he'll put up a much better fight in round 3. Regardless there's no shame in a split series against perhaps the best pound for pound wrestler of the last 20 years.

HS
AtomBuckeye's picture

In my opinion, I believe this was a desperate move knowing if this match went past the first period he had no chance. The Russians had a great plan to attack a flaw they found in Snyder and it paid off tremendously. In no way I can actually say this guy is 10x better than Snyder like the Russian coach claims. Snyder got caught, he'll bounce back and put the hammer down the next time they meet.

Important to remember that the Russian team is >Alabama football by comparison. Sudalev was the target, till KYLE took him down. Now Kyle's the target and Sudalev has had time to study him at length and come up with a brilliant counter. He took a risk and it paid off. These two monsters will go at it until their careers are over and I expect it to be close throughout. One of the great matchups in modern sport, and perhaps the greatest in international wrestling in this generation.

At one point Sad walks by and pats Kyle on the shoulder. Much mutual respect between them.  I am and have been since his first championship a Sad fan. I am a much bigger Kyle fan, so today hurt, but in the big picture, Sad is so awesome that it really doesn't. This one went his way and could again. But just when I think Kyle can't do it, he dos, so I think he will be alright.

One thing to note though: Kyle may have to beat a tougher field to make the team the Olympic year, as there are fewer weights. I suspect Kyle will have J'Den Cox, possibly Varner and others. So Kyle really must medal next year to make the challenge easier on him and harder on his opponents. I am confident that Kyle will get his world title back one way or another. It may because Sad drops.  It may be that Kyle gets revenge in the rubber match.
