It's The End Of The World As We Know It! (or is It?)

Fair, but this team's issues spread further than just one side of the ball or even just one position like many other years. The entire defense looked like garbage, the Oline played like garbage, the play calling belongs in the trash can, there was no heart/effort to be found anywhere (coach or player). This team scares me, I know they have the talent to win but if it weren't for the fact we know what they were ranked coming out of high school I would've thought they were Eastern Michigan this past weekend, oh wait....

Nearly everything you said was also said last year after Iowa. The difference? This year's team has 1 loss, not 2. Last year's loss came in November, not October.
Yes, the Buckeyes need to dig deep and grow from this loss, but they've been in this situation before.
No 1 loss B1G champ has ever been left out of the playoffs... and if the Buckeyes make the adjustments tø reach that point, I'll take them against anybody. Even Bama.

The Iowa game was much more of an anomaly than this one. What we see at Purdue was a culmination of all the ineptitude on a team that's clearly regressed week after week.

I think at least with last year our scheme matched the profile of our players. Our line was performing better also. JT had his worst game as a Buckeye and the team had a bad game. This year we've seen these same issues week after week and it finally caught up with us. I respect what you're say and appreciate the optimism but I'm more nervous for the rest of this year than I was after Iowa last year. I'm not worried about the playoffs or B1G, I just don't want to get routed to bad teams anymore. Losing to Purdue, Sparty, and TTUN in the same season might put me in a casket.

Last year's Iowa loss was completely unexpected. Completely.

I had an uneasy feeling about the Purdue game about 3 or 4 weeks into the season given the match-up of their passing offense with our passing defense.  I kept hoping that the issues, especially on defense, would be addressed and corrections made from week to week.  Felt a little better after the Penn State game, with the late game performance of the defense in that one.  Didn't feel good after the Indiana win.  Even less good after Minnesota.

Looking back, given the game-to-game performance, and lack of significant improvement in the defensive play (or scheme), the Purdue loss was, literally, inevitable. At least that's how I feel now.

What usually happens when they lose?
How have they responded in the past?
My money is still on Urb until proven otherwise.

It. Is. Time.

That's my point (if it wasn't clear)... some fans are so quick tø give up on the team. Urban is very good at what he does. He's here for a reason. Let him do his job.

HS

My personal favorite is the, "Urban's lost it!"  that we've been seeing since he was hired after every loss.

I’m not giving up on the team, but don’t vilify fans for giving up on them after a game where from all appearances the team gave up on themselves.

Title of thread = Good song by R.E.M

Topic of Thread = Same horrible song & dance by UFM (& staff). Blown out by a team with less talent because we don't ever seem to take game planning seriously. We just run the same stuff every week and rely on our superior  talent for it to work.

HS

Totally agree!!! The defensive coordinator/co coordinator is coming up with terrible gameplans. Our defense always seems unprepared and we have to wait for halftime for adjustments.. I say this, but I thought for 3 quarters our defense played better than I thought they were going to play against Purdue.. All I have to say about the offense is our Head Coach refuses to even try to practice and run quarterback sneaks on short yardage downs.. Hardheaded!!!

”definition of insanity, is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”

It's not Urban that needs to go...it is a chunk of the staff around him. Nick Saban doesn't get blasted like we did because he manages his staff and hires excellent developers of top talent. Urban is still a great coach, he just needs to surround himself with the right people and as of late that hasn't happened but that doesn't mean it can't be fixed.

HS
aboynamedtracy's picture

But the problem with that is Urban 100% has the ability to choose and maintain his staff. So the issue you correctly point out Urban has is entirely of Urban's doing. It took a damn scandal to get rid of 1 of the knuckleheads he brought on.

HS
mittenst8buck's picture

Yeah you are right. I am just saying I don't think a coach just losses his ability to be great just in a couple years...I think he has made some poor personnel choices and now needs a way out of it. If he can start hiring people he doesn't know closely and ditch the stupid "2 years hell or high water" approach he could get his tenacity back. Right now he has had a pretty shitty year and may need a push in the right direction...and from a few people on this site pointing to some media outlets he may be getting that push this very moment.

It was a football game. We lost! Move on.

No that’s where you are dead wrong. Not just a football game - there’s a lot of principle here.

This dude gets paid $8,5 million of state tax dollars. Or tuition dollars. Pick the pot the money comes from - I’ve paid tens of thousands of dollars to both.

if I bought a bmw, and it only performed well at 35 mph on sunny days you bet I would bitching up a storm. That’s what this program does with bmw materials.  Tell me that you don’t hold your breathe that this team will shit the bed in high profile games or at least once a year  (Oklahoma, Clemson 1 & 2, Iowa, Purdue).

i don’t care if it has only happened 9 times, it’s usually embarrassing .  I’m not talking Losing , I’m talking shitting the  bed.

Nope, I’ve spent too much money and spent another $400 on the game this year to give this guy a free pass. It’s a bmw - respect and maintain it

HS

Since you put it that way....

this isn’t a BMW, this would better be compared to a much more glamorous, high performing car. I would more liken this to your annual flat tire. The car doesn’t lose to other cars 99% of the time.

Maybe you can ask Michigan about their car, or perhaps Penn State about theirs. Texas A&M really got taken on the cost of their new car.

You have to see it for what it is. You can trade your current ride in and I’ll get you a new Hyundai or Kia model. Shiny, new, and even perform well at moments, but in the long run, I’d take what we have in the garage over what all the neighbors in the hood have in theirs.

ps, these high performance cars can have issues and repairs tend to cost more, just a heads up, before you go looking for a used option.

Ohio State losing to Purdue and Iowa the last 2 years is not crazy. Getting blown out 49-20 and 55-24 respectively is crazy.

HS

Criticism it's fine but some of it is over the top. Crazy comments are made about all coaches, though. Evenen Saban.

HS
tampatom's picture

The reason the blowouts happened last two years is the defense is terrible and can't keep game close if offense has a bad game. Last year LB at Iowa were no where to be found and this year back 7 is really not bringing it. Alabama and Clemson have the defenses to keep game close or win it.

Haskins bailed out defense first six games but had average game because we could not score in red zone. Even the TTUN with 3-4 losses past few years never got blown out by mid Big teams because of their defense. we need an overhaul on that side of the ball if we want to stop these types of games

Its a good thing I was living in Ohio during the John Coopers days cause I would of killed one of these SEC bastards down here. lol I agree with ya BuckNOrl. As much as Purdue sucked its just one loss. Just as Va Tech was. We got alot of crap to fix before we get to that caliber, but the talent is there. Somewhere.

What does Urban do during the games? Serious question. He said he was going to take more of a "back seat approach" when he took this job....meaning put more faith and trust in his coaches on game day while he organizes the game plan during the week. When cameras pan over to Urban, all I see is a fan. Not a coach. He is simply just watching a game and will periodically talk on his headset. Rarely do I see him talking to players or groups...like the Oline. This might have worked with previous assistants but its not working now.

With all do respect, you can read precisely nothing into what Urban is ACTUALLY doing during a game given the limited number of sideline shots on TV

I think the problem is that at the beginning of the year this team seemed to have an identity, then it just faded and they started to look like there was n plan, no direction.

The NC team was under the radar and they fought their ass off week to week. This team is on everyone's radar and has been exposed. They need to get things figured out very quickly.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

I think other teams have simply adapted to what they're doing and are effectively scheming against it. At the beginning of the season no one really knew what to expect given a new QB and interim head coach.

Even though I agree to pump the brakes on Urban. This is the 3rd year in a row with a 4 TD + loss. Elite teams dont lose like that. That was flat out embarrassing. Voodoo this and that my ass. You dont lose like that with the talent on this team. Plain and simple. That was a 3-3 team. Stop making excuses. Theres alot of issues that need to be corrected. Right now, I dont trust this stubborn ass coaching staff to fix them.

When Cardale won the job and then sputtered in the red zone Urban would bring JT in. I think it might be time to give Tate some red zone and short yardage looks. Clearly Haskins is an NFL style QB and that is always a good thing when your oline sucks.

HS

I could very easily, counting bowl a game, see this team losing 2-3 more.   At this stage there isn't a fix for the linebacker play and the lack of a running game.

Ill wait and see what Urban does come about January 3rd or 4th.  Several coaches have got to go.
