Davis and Studrawa need their pink slips.
"The only good thing about it is winning the d*** thing" - Urban Meyer on The Game The War
They shouldn't have been hired in the first place
Johnson and Hartline get As from me. Day was an A earlier, but as the season has gone it seems that basically anyone with a pulse should have been able to beat our first three opponents. He and Wilson share a C.
Grinch gets a D because the safeties suck, but maybe he'll turn it around with more time.
Bill Davis and Stud can pack their bags. Hell I'll drive them to the airport.
Hell I'll drive them to the airport bus station
The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick
I would just call a taxi for them. They sucked enough money and time away from osu….
I'll drive them to Ann Arbor and let them fuck that team up. I only live 20 minutes south of there and could drop them off on my way to work.
Careful what you wish for. Ed W. has turned an inept UM offensive line into a strength for them now.
"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." - Groucho Marx
"The recipient of Oyster's ONLY down vote".
I would trade Warinner for Studrawa in a heartbeat, it's a shame he was ever moved out of the offensive line coaching position at Ohio State.
That’s not a valid comparison. Ed was outstanding at OSU as O-line coach. After promotion, he was outstanding at OSU for trashing a repeat national championship team.
The current staff in question hasn’t done shit...
I am careful what I wish for...that's why I said it. There is no comparison between Coach Warriner and Studrawa. The latter is horrible and we all know it.
This is the most disheartening thing for me: we've beaten almost no one.
Our best win, Penn State, lost at home to MSU and was one play (granted, it would have been a miracle play) from losing a third in a row to Indiana. TCU is a mess, Rutgers and Oregon State are among the bottom 5 of the Power 5, and what does that leave us? An okay win vs a G5 Tulane, and unimpressive victories over Indiana and Minnesota teams that are both struggling.
"porque las estirpes condenadas a cien años de soledad no tenían una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra."
for starters, look around the conference.. who has anyone beatin? Michigan beat a Wisconsin team the was dominated at home by BYU.. The B1G as a conference just isn't very good this year.
BYU did not dominate Wisconsin. They may have bullied the line of scrimmage but Wisconsin led almost every statistical category in that game. A bad INT by Hornibrook gave them a short field and a trick play beat wisconsin. Not the "domination" some posts claim happened. It was a 3 point victory
And Penn State has a three game stretch of Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin coming up. There's a very real chance they go 0-3 or 1-2. Then we've literally got nothing.
I think we all latched onto weeks 1-3 too much. Hell JT Barrett used to tear up those weeks too (he threw 6 TDs against BG). Turns out its much harder to score when the teams are even halfway decent.
Atleast Barret had some great offensive lines. Billy Price and Jamarco Jones are two dudes I would obviously take back in a heart-beat. We essentially swapped out the best center in the country, for a 6'7" guard who's been terrible with snaps all year and got thrown to the ground by the nose tackle from Purdue.. and he's the one leading the unit lol. This is the worst offensive line in my lifetime.. easily. Really not even close.
I used to think the 2006 line was shaky (see Florida) but this one’s reaching some new levels of bad. If this weren’t the Buckeyes, it would be comical.
I survived Cooper, and I hate Tai Streets.
This line is the worst of the Meyer era for sure. But some of those Jim Bollman offensive lines from the 2000's were putrid. Nothing will be as bad as that.
It’s a dark day when beating Tulane is cited as an “okay win,” but here we are.
I agree on Davis and Studrawa... Both have tons of talented players that haven't produced. The safeties are better than perceived... They just get caught up in having to clean up where the LB's fail too often. The whole secondary isn't great... But it's far from average. Give me either Malik, Tuf and Browning OR Werner, Malik and Browning... And can Spielman please be invited to teach... "See ball... Get ball" . Both the OL and the LB's have regressed since the former coaches for those positions left their posts. 2 weeks to improve on it. I bet Larry Johnson can coach up the OLine better. #HireLeCharlesBentley
I hate the offseason.
He's 6-1 at UC. The chances of Urban coaching against him in the future, is far more likely than Urban coaching with him.
Damn lose one game and we're already sending Urban to the AAC.
That's life in the big city I guess.
You misread it, I'm saying Fickell might get a job maybe at Illinois or Maryland, and be coaching against Meyer.
I see this place isn't much for humor lately.
Short term memory forgetting all the Fire Fickells before he left OSU as well.
Frank Lucas is yelling at Black Scrubs
Cincinnati is on the schedule next year
Is Marcus Freeman coaching LB's at Cincinnati?
I'm sorry I'm not sorry!
Their lack of development falls at the feet of Davis, Meyer’s best man at his wedding and the only assistant coach on a one-year deal.
We all know why this is mentioned, but go ahead and own it. You're alleging that Urban is hiring and retaining friends instead of good football coaches. I'm fine with that take, but don't hint at it if that's your angle.
Pray for potatoes with a hoe in your hand.
I don't think this site has hinted at that at all. The writers have routinely been very direct about their opinion of Urban hiring buddies.
It goes back to the whole Florida thing where after the first set of assistants (Mullen, Strong, etc) left Meyer hired people he did not know and took on more responsibility because he did not trust them so now mainly hires people he knows and has been around to prevent that.
But Stud and Davis need to go. Not sure who we could get, but maybe we could leave their resumes lying around so people know he is looking.
Need to talk to past alums possible AJHawk, B. Carpenter, or James L. Young guys who can relate to the kids today.
It's time to see what the man is made of when someone smacks him in the mouth
I don't know why Taver Johnson has seemingly received a pass by the fan base.. probably because Bill Davis and Studs have been so bad. The most talented position group at Ohio State is the cornerback room, there's more 5* in our secondary than the rest of the conference has combined. Yet they are underperforming like crazy.
I think the CBs have done ok. There are very limited number of times I remember Okudah or Sheffield getting burned. The fact that our safeties have played so poorly is also partly because the opposing QBs know to throw at them instead.
Agree. Teams are going after the LBs and whatever safety is lined up next to Fuller. The CBs are fine. Not perfect, but every CB is going to get beat occasionally.
We are not getting a lot of pressure any more as well.
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
Right. There has been little pressure, and it still seems like most of the defense's woes concern the middle of the defense. Big plays seem to result from issues with the linebackers and the safeties, not the cornerbacks. They would look a hell of a lot better with better LB's and safeties.
It's hard to play CB when one of your safeties is always a liability and your linebackers are pressing the line and giving up the middle of the field.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
This is going to be unpopular but I think Schiano is the biggest problem on D and either Day , Wilson or UM is the biggest problem on O..
Schiano seems to want to play his man coverage without the players (Back 4) to do it and that puts to much pressure on the LB's , we seen this last year. It seems the talent at LB is good but not as good as last year and the same can be said for the Back 4 . The D line misses Bosa , the pass rush is not the same. So it is time to look at scheme .
The O issues seem mostly about the blocking scheme the Buckeyes are using. Apparently they cannot handle the zone blocking that we're using to run the RPO. It is causing to much indecision in blocking assignments. The D's are crowding the LOS and forcing the pass, also they have no fear that the QB will hurt them running so all they have to worry about is pressuring the QB. We also seem to not spread the D vertically enough, to much short passing so keeping the back 7 close to the LOS and the trap plays and misdirection plays in the run game seem non existent with the zone blocking scheme that we use to hit for big yards. At lest we should throw away the zone blocking in the red zone so the OL can get a hat on a man and allow for misdirection and trap plays. Have we run a QB misdirection roll out with the possibility to either run or pass in the red zone with at least a couple different rec options. Maybe Haskins can't do it but we do have another QB who might that is a possibility also.
PRO8 those are all fair points. I am inclined to give Achiano a pass due to the Ds performance the past few years...but I think his pass will be revoked if they keep trotting out the same plan. Clearly it is not working, and if anything the safeties seem to regress at times. If we don't have the personnel or the personnel coached to run the scheme correctly he had better change it. However, he did last season post Iowa so until next week he gets the benefit of the doubt from me. Davis and Stud on the other hand both need to go. If Davis' firing improves the LB play and thus Grinch's S play then Grinch shoild get another year at least. But I would have to say the S seem the most clueless this season and that is all Grinch.
Some of the positions we have just do not have the talent to play power 5 football.
It is hard to coach players who are slow and just do not want to put the effort in.
The staff needs to quit playing the favorite game and start playing those who wants to and can block , make the right reads and not play stupid.
Exactly. Yet they have to answer to the UFM mind-SET on no su stitutions unless injury preceding it.
This locked focus has been just one of our seasons weak links.
Least we forget the undisciplined Achilles heel...penalties.
It is hard to coach players who are slow and just do not want to put the effort in.
This sadly appears to be the case. Am I the only one who senses entitlement among the players? That one just has to put on the Buckeye uniform and the opposition is supposed to just wilt? That one doesn't have to play hard? Or smart and under control?
The staff needs to quit playing the favorite game and start playing those who wants to and can block , make the right reads and not play stupid.
I would add: start playing those who want to and can block and tackle effectively
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
You are definitely NOT the only one who senses entitlement. There is an obvious lack of fire amongst these players, and that's not something coaching can provide.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
Davis should not be working at Ohio State today. The LB play is every bit as abysmal as most people think. Where opponents attack a Defense speaks volumes about where you're weak. And the LB unit has been under siege by Offenses of all types and varieties for well over a year, yet nothing has changed. Actually, it has. It's somehow gotten worse. Dude should have been dismissed yesterday.
Bye Stud, bye Billy. Taver and Grinch are in their first years... but they're on the hot seat for next year.
Taver and Grinch are in their first years... but they're on the hot seat for next year.
They're on the hot seat now...blow us away between now and December or get the resume dusted off...imho.
Not sure who the good o line coaches are but we need one. I would love to get Marcus Freeman back. His defense looks pretty good. I hope Greg S leaves. I would love to get Chris Ash back. I think that suites Taver and Grinch abilities better. Ash preaches fundamental safety play. The back seven has too many pre snap keys. Lining Tuf Borland up over a guard is not working smh.
Lets just get Purdue's o-line coach. Knox had running room all night.
And you got a DV for stating a fact. SMH.
Wait a second, there goes Knox again...
How about both a former OL coach, and a former LB coach. One is available immediately, while the other is now working as a consultant for Meyer's buddy in New England. This would add some spice, and it would never get dull. LOL.
LSU did have nasty defenses under the Mad Hatter. If we could fire Davis and Schiano right now and hire Miles I would do it.
Though I don't know how much he did for the defenses but it has to be better, right?
Can it be worse?
Miles was actually an OL at UM, and was an OL coach, originally. Bert was a DL at Iowa and was an LB coach under 17 -time B1G COY, Kirk Ferentz .
We could pay one in bacon (someone insert the gif for me) and the other one in fresh-cut grass and Dos Equis.
I would love to get Chris Ash back
Anyone willing to trade Schiano to Rutgers for Ash?
I would trade Schiano to Tennessee for Pruitt
I knew that when The Wildman Coombs left that we would be in trouble in the secondary. I think it’s too late to fix the problem there this year. We can only hope but we’re half way through the season now .
It's apparent now that Coombs was underpaid for years.
Coombs should've been making enough money that nothing would make him want to leave
Coombs should've been making enough money that nothing would make him want to leave
Money may not have been the reason. Coaching in the NFL is a dream for some, just as playing in the league is for players.
Maybe another half mil makes those aspirations go away? probably not but damn I wish we would've made it tougher on him to leave
A lot of blame goes to Schiano, but we've seen very sound defense under him in the past. I think at the end of this season, either Davis or Schiano is gone, but not because Schiano got fired. If Urban retains Davis, I think Schiano says "to hell with this, this guy is ruining my reputation, I'm out of here"
The defenses were a lot more sound when Fickell was the co defensive coordinator with Schiano.
Also I remember Ash having some really good units.
Out of 11 coaches (1 head coach and 10 assistants), Brian Hartline is the ONLY one I've been impressed with, and he's an INTERIM. How is it possible that Brian, who has been doing this for only 3 months, is doing a better job than someone like Billy Davis (20+ years in the NFL)?
The reason the receivers are better is not because of Hartline, its Haskins playing quarterback. When Haskins came in during the Mich game last year he throw for 96 yards in just over 1 quarter. Project this over the entire game and its nearly 400 yards against probably the best defense OSU played last year. Haskins 400 yards passing games started last year with Zac Smith as receivers coach. Haskins could have thrown for 400 yards in every game last year. Could have been something special with the D and run game we had last year.
Very true. It amazes me how some of our fans think one group improving due to an interim coach. Not to discredit Hartline he’s a great coach with passion but I have seen our receivers got wide open JT era but JT couldn’t find them. You pointed out the obvious facts here. I also don’t think trading for Ash would fix any thing as Ash’s defense is bent but no break philosophy which I rather hire someone aggressive like Pruitt. I want an Alabama like defense not like any average defense we have seen in years. Lack of pressure and constantly out of positions in LBs hurt us tremendously in defense.
the cornerbacks have seemingly dropped off since Kerry Coombs left for the Tennessee Titans.
and our twitter game is nonexistent #WEMISSYOUANDYOURCRAZYHASHTAGSCOACHCOOMBS
"Defiance in Silence"
1. Stud (I know he's a solid coach, despite the OL woes this season)
2. Johnson (great coach)
3. Hartline (WR's have shown drastic improvement this year).
4. I'd keep Day if possible, but he probably takes a HC position next year.
The rest can be replaced based on what I've seen.
Well, we found coach Stud’s 11W account.
Get back to work, please.
LOL, upvote for that.
Stud failed at LSU and was fired. Went to Maryland where he helped get Edsall fired. Was hired by Meyer when he called up looking for a reference and Urban decided on the spot to hire him instead. Failed his way up to one of the best assistant jobs in the country. He can go tomorrow as far as I'm concerned.
Ding ding ding! We have a winner! Totally agree...
"I don't apologize for anything. When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there." - Woody Hayes
Anyone in the Columbus area willing to give Stud and Billy a ride to the airport?
So the target is not really Alabama, the target is a jobs program for friends and family.
Censors wallow in the feces of the accomplished.
If you look at the staff bio page it's literally friends and family except for maybe-and that's a big maybe- 2 guys. Complete good 'ol boys staff that Urban put together and it will cost him his coaching career. Smith alone did 40% of the work in that direction. The staff is a joke and it's Meyer's fault.
Judging by the performance the last two weeks, this team needs a full-time Heart Coordinator. There sure wasn’t much on display Saturday. The O-line appears to lack it the most, but I’m not sure if that’s kids, coaching or both.
If/when OSU let’s go of Davis, Schiano also needs a very critical look for repeatedly running a scheme that these kids clearly cannot execute competently. If Grinch is all he’s cracked up to be (and the jury’s still WAY out on that), maybe a fresh mind calling the shots wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Washington State doesn’t seem to be missing Grinch too much, are they?
"Great moments are born from great opportunities." - Herb Brooks
Here's a thought - is it possible the RPO's are keeping the lineman closer to line of scrimmage to avoid ineligible lineman downfield in case it's a pass, and therefore, not getting to the second level to create running lanes for Dobbs and Weber??
Doesn't seem to be effecting other teams that run it.
Probably need to talk to whoever is teaching these guys how to tackle
Billy Davis is the Worst Man of the asst coaches. LBs have under performed both years under Davis. If Urb keeps Davis into next year, this D is positioned for failure.
“If Urb keeps Davis into next year, this D is positioned for failure again.”
I was expecting this article to just say "poorly."
Last year Studrawa still had benefited from Warriner the year before, it has been 2 years now and his teachings are beginning to show. He isn't getting the job done. Davis well lets see, last year he benefited from Fickle the year before. Two years now and he flat out stinks as a coach, I do not care how you stack it up, stinks is stinks.Taver Johnson, well I didn't think he did that great in his first run on the OSU staff and it seems he is showing off that same skill this time around too.Alex Grinch, he may have lifted WSU defense but here his hands are tied because of Greg Schiano running the show. Jury is still out on him but if the safeties play is a indicator, well then he sucks too. And then there is Greg Schiano, He maybe a nice guy but as for his scheme, it sucks and other opposing coaches are easily scheming against him. With the LBs playing badly under Davis, it is multiplied by a power of 10 with his scheme. Constantly having them up on the line against 300 lb OL with no room or time to react to the play. And like Meyer is too stubborn to see it isn't working or just is not able to come up with anything else, I don't know, To me A LOT needs to change to turn this around. And I really do not know if these coaches are capable to turn it around.....
What the article didn't point out is that Davis is the only assistant that didn't get a raise after last year. That tells me that Urban already knew that there were problems, but instead of getting rid of Davis, he was brought back for another year. Zero chance he'll be here next year.
He shouldn't be here now. Does anyone out there think Saban would not have fired his ass right after the game?
It might go something like this after the game:
Nick: “Hey, Billy!”
Billy: “Yes, Nick?”
Nick: “Before we get on the bus for the airport, I have a question: What do you and your speech at Urban’s wedding have in common”
Billy: “Gee, I don’t know, Nick.”
Nick: “You’re both toast. Here’s a Greyhound ticket to Tuscaloosa. If you have any questions about the bus schedules, here’s Lane Kiffin’s number. Your office stuff will be delivered to your house tomorrow.”
Nick: (Dials a number on his phone) “Hey, Urban! It’s Nick...Yeah, Tua’s knee is fine...Yeah, I saw that LSU game against Georgia...that Burrow kid, huh?...Yeah, he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen too...Nooo, Finebaum’s not an asshole once you get to know him...Anyway, the reason I called is that I’ve got a great LB coach for ya’! I think you know him!”
How can an offensive line that avg's 6-6 and 311 lbs not block to open up run lanes?
They are getting beat by guys significantly smaller who arent all-americans or all conf lineman. Dont give me that BS about loading the box either. Lots of our runs are stopped in our own backfield.
How is it that Minnesota and Purdue and pretty much any NFL team can run the ball from 3 WR sets and no run threat from the QB?
We have a giant OL and 2 great RBs. It's scheme and coaching, plain and simple.
People make jokes about Tressel Ball, but at least then we had the attitude that we could run "Dave" against any defensive alignment. If the opponent stacks the box you only need one opening for the RB to break through and gain big yardage.
I really have no idea, but could it be that the interior guys are too big? It's not often that you see Guards and Centers over 6'3" and 300 lbs. I'm sure that it's difficult to get the snap off, get up into a good position, and block. You also have some of the smaller guys on opposing D lines getting leverage and mucking it up enough for a free LB to diagnose the run and stuff it. Basically, what we wish OSU's DL/LBs were doing is what other teams are doing to the O line.
Now maybe its "just me" but all this switching of players in and in and in and out 1 play 2 plays but it can't (IMHO) have a positive effect on chemistry. The fellas can't even get a grip on the flow of the doggone series let alone a quarter or half. It seems as if they're just running guys in the game to just do it. Trust me I'm not on the sideline but unless a starter needs a blow he runs with the 1st team. I mean the Dline no wait the ENTIRE defense unless you're paying strict attention you have no clue who's in the game and I think neither do they. I understand a 2 back rotation but NEITHER gets a feel for the flow or how the O line is handling things upfront. And receivers whoa all over the dang board. Hey listen I know that they want a gang of kids to play but in my opinion it is at HEART of them being soft as the underside of a catfish. I mean why bust your hump to beat out the guy in front of you when you'll probably get just as much if not more run than he is?
NONE are more hopelessly Enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free!
I've had similar concerns about rotating players.
We've toned it down with the WRs this year, which I appreciate. We're playing Mack, McLaurin and Hill for the most part. Cambell and Dixon come in situationally.
As for the LBs that's been a disaster. Just find the 3 best guys for each role and let them play. Only take them out if they're injured or really winded. Same thing for the Safeties.
There's a prevailing sentiment that because we recruit so well that we "have to get all of this talent reps on the field". No, we don't. We have to get our best players on the field with as much experience as possible and win games.
Completely agree with put the best talent on the field and run with it! We have seen 5☆ recruits just not measure up to the billing
I fully believe Schiano is gone after this season whether on his own doing or Urban telling him they’re moving in a different direction. I also think Davis has shown he can not produce on this level in college football so he’s gone too. With that being said, I would love for Urban to go all out getting Ash to come back as D-Coordinator or hell he can even hire Durkin once Maryland fires him. In Davis’s replacement I think you go after Marcus Freeman currently at UC or bring in someone like Laurinaitis who has actually played the game at this level of college.
The offense issues are pretty simple. Stud is awful so give him the boot. Urban needs to completely let go of the offense and get rid of his zone read style and let Day and Wilson fully implement their offense.
Go for two only because you can't go for three
I agree with your assessment.
The one thing I'm curious about is whether Urban has the will to overhaul his staff. He's been looking sad and tired on the sidelines, not fired up and demanding.
Totally agree. The whole Zach Smith cluster thing aged him ten years. He looks like he is going to have a stroke right on the sideline.
You lost me at Durkin. Once the MD report comes out, I'm not sure he ever coaches again. In any event, I sure as heck don't want him anywhere near Ohio State. I can't even imagine him showing up in a recruit's living room and trying to sell Mom on the idea of putting her boy under his care.
My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom. - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)
Most of this article could have been wriiten before the Purdue game and be 100% accurate! Someone didn't have any balls!
Hector m Rivera
O line should know how to run and pass block. That is just stupid. Overall defense is a problem.
Assistants get too much credit and too much blame. If an assistant is "bad" it is b/c they do things like drink or order erotic devices on the job, or generally let their position groups slack in the weight room, film room, classroom, etc, etc. It is very rare that an assistant is "bad" in the way that a lot of posters make knee jerk assumptions about. "Oh no, Coach Davis hasn't turned Pete Werner into Shazier 2.0!! If he would just scream at him the way I do on TV, he wouldn't take bad angles!!! Coach him up!!! I could do it!!!!".
If an assistant is "bad" it is b/c they do things like drink or order erotic devices on the job, or generally let their position groups slack in the weight room, film room, classroom, etc, etc
Was that wrong...?
LBs, DBs and OL coaches and even the "D" Coordinator are simply not getting it done period. Eight games in and the same problems exist. We couldn't even get 100 yards rushing against the Gophers and 0-6 Nebraska had three 100+ yard rushers. . . unbelievable with the quality running backs we have.
Can we trade Schiano to Rutgers in exchange for Ash, the Rutgers cannon and the pilgrims that fire it? Happy to throw in Davis and Stud if Schiano isn't enough to get it done.
Johnson gets an A++ but I really don't know why he hasn't rotated more at DT and for that matter DE now that Bosa is gone. Without blitzing we are not getting there and even when we do not so much because we are sending slow LBs. Jones needs some rest or we will have him dinged too and Landers and Hamilton aren't getting there or closing many inside holes. Maybe all those Frosh and red shirts are dinged too.
Fire everyone but LJ, Day, and (possibly) Alford.
Lets revisit this idea in December. We have all our goals still in front of us.
I don’t think assistant coaches, even at OSU, need to have all-Americans in their unit every year. My expectation is, all things being equal, that they get better.
Offensive line - that’s not happening. When Jordan beat out Taylor and Myers who had more experience at Center for the job, what you hope is that MJ is just that special of a player. He is a very good offensive lineman, but his presence at Center is clearly more to do with the others not measuring up, and that lack of development comes back to Studrawa. Prince regressing comes back to Studrawa. The unit is not getting better. Studrawa isn’t getting it done. Needs to go.
LBs - Booker has regressed, Baker regressed (before he left), Hilliard has regressed, Browning has regressed. Borland appears far less aggressive than last year. Davis not getting it done. Needs to go.
CBs - still shaky, but I think they are improving. Fewer PIs, better at finding the ball and anticipating routes.
Safeties - Fuller has struggled, but Pryor and Wint have been awful. Fuller and Wade are our best options at safety. I think give Grinch another year or two. But he is on hot seat.
Dl - LJ has had a lot of injuries, and taking those into account, they’ve done well to hold their own even if they haven’t improved much during season.
Everyone else seems to be doing well with their units.
"Woody would have wanted it that way"
Right, it is all about improvement. Looking back at the last few years, the best assistant coaches always had units that improved dramatically over a year.
Coombs' cornerbacks gave up over 400 yards to Richard Lagow, but performed really well down the stretch. Denzel Ward is looking like a potential Rookie of the Year in the NFL right now. Kendall Sheffield went from not being able to cover anybody to being reliable and having a huge game against USC. Marshon Lattimore got burned over and over again in 2015 but became one of the country's best in 2016.
Larry Johnson doesn't need a recap at this point.
Ed Warinner's offensive line was swiss cheese against a 6-6 Virginia Tech team. They were dominated all night. By the end of the year, they were bullying Alabama. Look at what he is doing at Michigan this year with a bunch of 2 and 3-star guys.
I just want to see a significant improvement over the year. The offensive line seemingly never improved over the course of 2016, 2017, and 2018. The linebackers got worse with time over the past two years. It is time to make changes with Davis and Studrawa.
Interesting thought: all these fireable coaches were all by themselves without the true head coach for 5 weeks...the formative weeks and most can't see the lasting effect on this team. YOU CAN"T have it both ways.
Each of them should be well capable of leading and improving their units without much if any direction from above.
Lure Little Animal away from the B1G Network as the LB coach. AJ Hawk is launching a radio show—might as well bring him along too
I’m a mini van driver in a mega fun world
That's a nice thought, but those guys are probably not hungry enough. If they've been smart, and I've no reason to think otherwise, they should be financially set for life. An assistant coaching gig pays pretty well, but it sounds like a heck of a grind for at least half the year, and is probably tough on the family. Maybe a TV or radio hobby-job suites them at this stage of their lives.
My hot take: Fire Greg Schiano and bring back Chris Ash. The press man at corner has not worked. Bring back the quarters coverage for our defense.
Buckeye in the desert of Washington state.
If the coaches decide to make adjustments like they should then we still have a chance. Here is what NEEDS to happen:
1: Brady Taylor should be getting back from his injury soon. Play him at center. Michael Jordan at center has not worked out at all for our running game. I don't know why but it just hasn't. I know he is terrible at snapping the ball so that might be part of it and maybe he is just too big.
2: Try out a different right guard other than Isaiah Prince. I love him but business is business. I've been benched before for not being good enough too.
3: Use Tate Martell as our red zone qb. I don't know why this isn't happening. He is the definition of a red zone quarterback. We are ranked 116th in the nation in Red Zone offense with Haskins as opposed to 21st last year with JT. I know a lot of this has to do with our running game. But giving Tate is at least worth a shot.
4: Our defense needs to recover from injuries. This isn't anyone's fault but it's obvious our defense isn't any good when they're not healthy.
I know this isn't necessarily going to fix everything but what we have going right now gives us 0 chance. You have to try something else.
Oh lord. Your #1 suggestion is Brady Taylor??? We are in more trouble than we think if that’s the case.
Let's bring in James L. Or Aj. to coach the lb's.
I anticipate getting down voted for this take but it is mine. Take a look at The Game highlights from last year. You will see that when called upon to run Haskins ran like his life depended on it. This year he is tentative and acts like he "knows" that he may be one and done. He avoids any type of contact. We need a QB that is a college QB that has the mentality to take off and run over someone! (looking at you Cardale!) I am talking about the mentality to lead this damn offense! It looks as though he is trying to keep from getting hurt so he can run to the NFL. When you have players like Nick Bosa leave school and Denzel Ward quitting on the "brotherhood" it does change the psych. of the rest of the team. I understand that DH is a generational player and can pass like no one I have ever seen at tOSU but as proven we need more than his arm alone!
I recall Saban calling out some of his players after we beat them (and we did beat them!) for not giving 100% and that they were looking to the NFL instead of playing the game.
I also understand that the players like Nick and others are looking for big paydays so spare me the "you would do the same thing.....they don't owe you anything spiel. This behavior sends the wrong message! It is no wonder that 3 star and 2 star talent with drive can kick our asses all over the field. They are playing for the love of the sport and the true "brotherhood"
You never get a second chance to make the first impression
I kind of agree on the running of Haskins. We need to utilize Tate Martell more in the red zone. And also, when we lost to MSU in 2015 Zeke was devastated and while he did call out his coaches which he should not have done, it obviously shows how badly he wanted to win and get into the playoff. He wasn't looking at the draft. Our players did not look like they cared after we lost to Purdue.
Meyer has made it clear in the past that the #1 thing he looks for in assistants is the ability to recruit. Now I'm not trying to tell a 3x national champion coach how to do his job but perhaps putting more emphasis on player development would show better results.
Your 11W Harbaugh Posting Guidelines
How many people was disappointed like me that Schiano didn't get the Tennessee job. He and Davis needs to be replaced. I'm pissed that Michigan got the guy from BC - Don Brown - he had a top rated defense there with the guys they recruit. OSU/Meyer needs to go out an pluck the absolute best DC from wherever. The LSU DC maybe. Same way with the LB coach. With the talent UFM has brought here there is absolutely no reason we do not have a top flight defense. And I do think Haskins will be the only pocket passer Urban will ever have....And the OLine - we thought before it was Warriner the year they messed around with Cardale starting - looks like it may be Urbans offense with a pocket passer....
Like see practice schedule do we have?1Inside run say for 15 minutes than outside run 15 minutes? Than group work together with backs on five, trap, power, pitch etc We need the attitude that we can run against God and cou ntry no matter what!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lots of speculation. My two cents: The players are tired. Both physically and emotionally. We know the players are good athletes. We know our coaches are as good as the coaches we're are playing against. The penalties were the first clue they have lost a step. Hoping the two weeks off recharges them.
I just check 11Ws to see if any Assistants have been fired yet....oh well, maybe tomorrow. Still early in the bye-week.
The SEC: The Conference of a Traitor Nation.
This list had us as the Number 11, O line. I think it needs updates. Note to our coach. This is where you consider what your options are. Nearly anyone would consider this job unless they're at a top 6 program. Even then it's a negotiation. We're failing to do basic fundamentals.
Yep. They're tired. They also have sub-par coaching.
Grinch: F Studrawa: F minus Schiano: D. Billy Davis: F Minus Minus Minus. Best Man my ass. Johnson: C minus.
I mean for Gods sakes. WTF?! I once recall urban (small u) calling the receiver room a "clown show". Funny how the clown turned out to be the idiot grandson of Earl Bruce that urbs was covering for. Know where the clown show is now? Sure you do. It's in the coach's meeting room. That's where our coaches scheme their asses off to make Indiana and Minnesota and Purdue look like Top Ten teams. Have we really beaten anybody this year? Penn State? Kind of sucks. Anybody know where TCU is ranked? They're not. I want someone to tell me what kind of rabbit these Tools are going to pull out of their hats to keep Meechy or even Meechy State from handing us our ass.
As for Bosa; bad injury. He wasn't coming back from that. But you drop out of school to focus on your rehab? When you're a co-captain? And Denzel?
We are starting to look like the IMG academy of Div 1 football. Not a good look, IMO.
Let me finish up here by pissing some more people off; Haskins looks like he's about number 11 out of 11 when it comes to leadership when the O is on the field. When he runs, which is never a good idea for him, he is primarily interested in getting down and protecting himself. I could conceive of him skipping the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (which is where we seem to be headed) to prepare for the NFL Combine. What the hell are they saving Tate Martell for? And Joe Burrow would not have been the answer. He is a mediocre runner and a poor passer. Luckily he has a great defense. Our quarterback situation, in terms of urban's offense, was a drawer full of dull knives. The stupid three week suspension killed us. Just killed us.
I'm done now.
I am Upset. Watching them play like that was rough. Coach Meyer, in my opinion is a good guy, but as a head coach he is Not the man for this job.
He does not develop NFL Players. Coaches around him do. At Florida he had Mullen as his OC When he Won Those Two National Championships, and whoever else on that STAFF.
In 2014 He Had Herman at OC, and a Great Staff. Coaches get Too Much Credit for their Success, when Those around them deserve just as Much. Not Everyone one is a Phil Jackson, Nick Saban, Bill Belichick, OR Gino Auriemma, Andy Reid.....
Does NOT matter what sport it is. There are great Coaches. And there’re coaches who can just, Talk the Talk.
This Team For the second Year in a row, got out mannned. It is NOT the talent Around them. It’s the coaching. The Head Coaching to be Exact. That 4th Down Call in the red Zone, Classic Meyer. Bad decision after Bed decision. A Panic of a Move, instead of taking the Points and switching momentum.
I’ll say it again. This Needs to be Day and Grinch’s Team. The Sooner OSU realizes that, sooner they climb back up. Meyer and Schiano are Not the men for this job. Maybe Great guys, but not great Coaches. The play, and Development of these Players says it All.
I can’t remember, which player Tweeted on Twitter, but it was a Former OSU Football Player. He tweeted last year, that Meyer is not great at Developing Football Players.
Great Coaches Do Both. Develop Men and Great Athletes. It’s time for this Team to Make a change. Only a matter of time before they realize that.
Meyer is a TOP recruiter and a very good head coach. However, his loyalty to his friends seems to be getting in the way of OSU being great. It bit him and the team in the ass with Zack S and it looks like it wil continue. Meyer seems to have lost his drive to demand excellence from everyone around him.
I've been saying for over a year now that Schiano, Davis, and Studrawa are not OSU worthy yet I got DV'ed into oblivion. Now people are complaining about these same three coaches. If you want to blame someone, blame the person that hired them to begin with
I get so tired of feeling like the Buckeyes have been OUTCOACHED!!! When was the last time you watched our buckeyes and felt like we won the game on coaching and not superior talent? From game plan to in game adjustments I just feel we are always behind the other teams we play! Especially Defensively...
I would teach the defense how to tackle.
It would be worth it not to have to see what now passes for tackling...
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
When we lose urb usually says it’s over let it go. He needs to do that with the scandal. Why would the crap idiots like finebaum bother him. Or the crap drake pulled? It’s over, we have a season to finish. And then move on with coaching changes. Shelley has to help him these issues while at home
Banks of olentangy
Bleacher Report is reporting that there is increasing tension between Urban Meyer, Gene Smith and some of the coaching staff. This can’t be good for recruiting or the program as a whole.
“Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!”
While I agree that Stud and Davis should be gone, I also think that our defensive scheme doesn't fit the personnel. Don't know how we'll fix it in 2 weeks.
That's what separates good coaches from great coaches. Great coaches make things work with what they have and make the appropriate adjustments
I kind of agree with all on here about the coaches. Schiano, Grinch, Stud, Taver and Wilson are just not getting it. It's UM coaches, he's the leader and I really think that some hard choices are going to be made. That said, my other gripe is the intensity of the team or should I say lack of. The LB's of past Ohio State teams were not the greatest but they did one thing and that is HIT. Same with our RB. They try to find a non-existing hole which our huge OL isn't producing. You can say the same with our defense, say the same about our DB's all are not producing at the level that's typical of an Ohio State team.
People say that Day is the successor but if you look at the rushing stats when Day was the coach, what you see is a game by game decline in rushing.
Oregon ST. 375 yards rushing
Rutgers 225 yards rushing
TCU 182 yards rushing
Then it drops with Tulane and PSU when UM came back. WE were close to 50/50 run/pass with Oregon St. Then after that the gap got bigger and bigger more toward the pass until we peaked at Purdue 76 rush/470 pass.
I think that UM knows what the problem is, it's that he is having a hard time conveying the message because of his friendship with the coaches. If you look at the stats, other than our first game, we drifted more toward the pass every game and when UM came back it didn't change at all. When you have a team that puts up 546 yards in 98 plays you would not expect that team to loose, but with a pass first mentality that's exactly what happens.
We are also a heavy penalized team. We average over 8 penalties per game at 76 yards total per game. Three games we had 10 penalties and in one game we had 11! That all goes back to coaching and discipline.
The worst stat is in the red zone. We had 37 attempts out of the red zone and only converted 56% into TD's and add 18% to the 56% for field goals. That gives us a total of 74% scoring in the red zone this year compared to our opponents at 89%.
This is not a championship coached caliber team.
Don't disagree with most of the coaching and scheme criticisms.
Two things strike me at the moment:
1. We're missing Luke and Kerry right now. Badly.
2. How very difficult it is to the Big 10 or a National Championship. ALL the pieces have to come together perfectly. All 9 units. All the coaches. All the schemes. The weather. Injuries. Officiating. And probably a few things I haven't thought of.
I want us to fix our problems too. I hate losing the WAY we lost. I can take a hard fought loss any day.
And I also think we fans are exceptionally spoiled by all the wins and how "easy" it all looks from the comfort of our living rooms.

I think that players strength and conditioning is the worst in recent years with so many injuries and losing the LOS individual battles.
"If you take it to em and you keep takin it to em , hell there's no question whose gonna win" W.W.H
I think we all knew this, but losing Kerry Combs was a big blow. His role went beyond the CB room. He brought so much energy and enthusiasm to that team. It was infectious. I miss seeing him running up and down the sidelines, jumping and screaming. Ahhhhh...the memories.
Some you guys are moving the goalposts. For YEARS I've seen complaints about the WRs underperforming and a lot of the blame was placed on Zach Smith but now that he's gone and Hartline is in place and the WRs are having a good year you're saying that Hartline isn't having an impact. How's that work?
Every coach on this team outside of LJ, Hartline, and Day (who, as an OC is not doing well right now) should not be awarded anything better than a C- right now. A C is "average" and our team is below average in every capacity except Haskins and the receivers.
Fact is, Urban made bad hiring decisions and refuses to make changes mid-season which means this season is shot. No, this isn't a "sky is falling" take. We haven't beaten any teams that are actually good. And MSU and Michigan have better coaches or a better team than we do.
Give the young guys some playing time because they'll need the experience for next year. Yes, we only have one loss and we win out we could be in the playoff but anyone who wants that to happen wants Clemson, The Sequel to happen in December. I'd rather start preparing for next year.
Let's focus on beating Michigan, winning some meaningless bowl game, and making the necessary coaching changes to start next year fresh.
To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.
I must have missed the 1 play where Bill Davis performed
