Inside the Box: Ohio State's Loss Brings Season Long Issues to Light

Yes we know they were not good running the ball, blocking, tackling, covering, blockhead penalties, coaching ect. Lets just move on to Nebraska and forget they last few weeks.

How about we don't.  I would like to read opinions from people who know about football why this is happening.  How 4 and 5 star players are playing beneath their ability and getting beat by 2 and 3 star players.

"You're welcome for the house I built."

HS
NuttyBuckeye's picture

Amen, Chic!  A great military leader or politician once said, "Those who fail to study history are condemned to repeat it."  I fully agree, and our coaching staff NEEDS to study the last two games and correct the run game and failure to blow the defensive line off the LOS, and why our Linebackers are continually getting stuck in traffic and out of position.

I would add to this that we need to do a better job of play calling and/or adjusting to an 8 and 9 man box or front.

What's round on the ends and high in the middle? Tell me if you know!

HS
Army Nut's picture

Screw studying. UFM needs to nut up, review game tape and tell the position coaches your players missed X number or assignments, made X number of bad reads/bad decisions.  Ask the position coach, "can you not teach or can the player not learn/execute"?  Either way I'd better see better quantifiable results or you are gone.

UFM needs to stop being this team's grandfather/best friend.  Life is tough, football is tough.  And it all comes down to production.  If someone can't produce (player or coach) get them off the field.  I would rather have a freshman play at 100 mph, working his ass off then these over-praised, paid-their-dues senior classmen.  I am looking at Knox, Victor, Berry, Werner, Pryor, Wint.

"we ain't come to play school"

HS

That is a quote that I often use as well. It has many variations. The coaches NEED to study the last two games and correct the problems that have been evident for some time. Corrections are long overdue.

There is a saying in the east that the sages don't generally have major problems because they deal with the problem when it is small before it gets out of hand as we saw in the Purdue game.

Hopefully, the coaches will use the next two weeks productively and we will see a new Buckeye team for the rest of the season as there is too much talent on the field to be seeing performances like we saw on Saturday against Purdue. I'm hopeful.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

I was gonna mention the tackling as well.  Our opponents are doing a great job in tackling in the open field (I was really impressed with Purdue in this regard on Saturday night).   Yet, the Buckeye's continue to struggle with tackling out in space.  I just don't get why that is such a problem.

We better not take Nebraska lightly.  They have had a pretty good offense all season long and far more balanced than the Bucks.  Like us they have struggled defensively.

HS
Nutinpa's picture

We shouldn't take anyone lightly.   Actually, I think it's the other way around.  When opposing teams see film of the Minny or the Purdue games, it's they who are likely to relax...not us.

HS
Bucknut75's picture

Amen, Nebraska just whooped Minny alot worst than we did :)

HS
Bucksfan8294's picture

I agree Dayton Buckeye. As painful as it was to watch them lose like that to Perdue, let's not forget there is a lot of football yet to be played. It does seem as though that game took the breath out of us, but it is just one game. An untarnished record would have been very nice. We best be getting ready for the next one. Michigan is ready for us, we best be getting ready for them. As bad as I hate them, they could seriously do the unthinkable this year. Prayers to the Buckeyes, go get 'em Bucks!!

I was flying so I didn't get to see most of the game (for some reason Jetblue doesn't have ABC). But can someone explain to me why the coaches refuse to play Justin Hilliard.

And put Jordan in another position he isn’t comfortable in?

HS

For some reason I thought he was a left tackle, but I stand corrected he was left guard. Although, I find it hard to believe we don't have a better option than Prince.

HS
BuckeyeatTSUN's picture

I get DVed every time I say it but Prince has been an unmitigated disaster for three years. He will not improve and will not play in the NFL. He is soft and has no confidence in himself NOT the type of player you want on the field, let alone as a captain.

We need a "Ryan Shazier" type....someone who will get in the face of his teammates and call them out when they screw up or aren't working hard.  Right now we have 22 captains...all great players that lead by example...super...give me one guy who will show some emotion...some fire!  We don't have that...and #97 wasn't that guy either.

I think the logic pre-season was the Pridgeon is a better G than Myers is a C

I think the logic pre-season was the Pridgeon is a better G than Myers is a C

That may have been the logic pre-season, but it sure doesn't look like the correct logic now.  I heard many times that Jordan was too tall to be a center and I'm starting to believe it now.  Lower equals better leverage.

Time for a shake up in O Line personnel.

I also wonder if someone (on the O Line or DH) is unwittingly telegraphing run plays.  Defenses always seem to know when a run play is coming.

My favorite team? Whoever is playing TTUN.

HS
SkoBux's picture

All of these issues are simply symptoms of a bigger issue. Why treat a headache when it's something bigger?

What's the underlying issue? Cannot say for sure but gun to my head it starts with our head ball coach. He's not the same since he came back from his suspension. If you have evidence otherwise, please let me know because I'd love to hear it. Whatever it is, it's been bleeding into the fabric of this team since the whole debacle went down.

Everyone is focused on gameplay, but this is bleeding into other areas, namely recruiting.

At last, Kerry had cracked open his first Red Bull with an impatient delight. And the rest, as they say, was history.

HS
Dmac3212's picture

I think its the head coach but I wouldn't put it on the incident. We have been blown out 4 times in 2 years. This started before the incident.

HS
EnzoAmoresHairExtensions's picture

This has been slowly happening over the last few years.  Too many coaches not being help accountable for their groups.  All of them coach like they are in a boardroom.  No fire on the sidelines.  No one in anyone's face telling them to get their shit together.  This team is slowly becoming stagnant.  We've all seen it in before.

HS
Bucknut75's picture

Speaking of headaches.........that may be the tip of the iceberg. Was heart conditions, now headaches.

HS
GoBuckeyes1020's picture

Horrible line play and no JT around to drive the running game in a Meyer offense.

Our defense was summed up by Joel Klatt over a week ago with this, 'the Buckeye defense is not playing fast, they're not physical and they are constantly getting caught out of position."

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick

HS
Dillon G's picture

Having 5 players the size of a left tackle trying out for the NFL is a failure in strategy. I don't understand why barely any outside of some 11W readers pointing it out in the comments. The interior line (where I did not play) they need to be a little smaller and mobile. They need to go low for leverage. They are getting pushed back by players smaller. You have all seen it. Getting stuffed without a blitz is bullshit.

It is noteworthy that our writer did what few of us have done all year long...and that is, include the D line as part of the problem too.

We now know that Bosa's loss really hurt....but what is confusing is how well they played at Penn State....arguably the best O line and talented team we've played all season.  Something is really amiss here.  I think, without sounding like an alarmist, the loss of Bosa, his saying "see ya", and the dysfunction of the coaches within the WHAC is making all scheme issues pale by comparison.

HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

To me the problem is what do they want the DL to do? Is it penetrate and make plays or eat blockers and free up the LBs.  They can’t do both. But right now, it seems like it’s a little of both and it’s not working.  And if you play press man, you’re banking on getting to the QB quickly to get the ball out...that’s not happening enough either.

You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton

HS
BUInvent's picture

If the coaches decide to make adjustments like they should then we still have a chance. Here is what NEEDS to happen:

1: Brady Taylor should be getting back from his injury soon. Play him at center. Michael Jordan at center has not worked out at all for our running game. I don't know why but it just hasn't. I know he is terrible at snapping the ball so that might be part of it and maybe he is just too big.

2: Try out a different right guard other than Isaiah Prince. I love him but business is business. I've been benched before for not being good enough too.

3: Use Tate Martell as our red zone qb. I don't know why this isn't happening. He is the definition of a red zone quarterback. We are ranked 116th in the nation in Red Zone offense with Haskins as opposed to 21st last year with JT. I know a lot of this has to do with our running game. But giving Tate is at least worth a shot.

4: Our defense needs to recover from injuries. This isn't anyone's fault but it's obvious our defense isn't any good when they're not healthy.

I know this isn't necessarily going to fix everything but what we have going right now gives us 0 chance. You have to try something else.

Go Bucks

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

I really want to see Martell in the red zone.  I just think he is so dynamic it will be a headache for the other team.  Everything is then on the table, including read-option.  I will just have to avoid this site if that happens and even one read-option fails.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
ZachBuckeye5's picture

I would make the argument that the main reason we can't score touchdowns in the red zone is our O-Line. I would put Martell in for a few plays in the red zone, but would not make him our "red zone QB". What could that do to Haskins mentally? If our O-Line learns how to block (and maybe go under center) we'll actually be able to run the ball from the 2 yard line.

HS
BUInvent's picture

I agree. However, We might as well try something different. There is no way of knowing how good we would be in the red zone with Tate Martell if we never give him a chance.

Special teams continue to suck...except punting. Getting caught on the one foot line on a kickoff is something you might see in a HS JV game. Oh and let’s have a 310 pounder try and block a punt. And can’t remember going two kicking plays in a row without a penality...hold, block in the back, roughing..just really poor.

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.

HS
Huskerbuck's picture

On the other hand the punting team and coverage has been outstanding. . . but what good does it do when the "D" continues to give up 90+ yard drives (at least three X this year if I recall correctly)?  Unbelievable!

HS
Nutinpa's picture

All of those things point to a lack of discipline and "buy-in" on this team and guys who want stats.  And oh, btw......that is supposed to be Meyer's unit, you know, the most dysfunctional group on the team year-in and year-out.?

HS

"Season long issues" says it all and it falls on the coaches.  Very little, if any, improvement in OL, LBs and DBs since game one not to mention excessive, undisciplined penalties.  Yikes, even 0-6 Nebraska had three 100+ rushers agains the Gophers, a team we could not even reach the 100 yard marker against.

HS
BuckeyeJAK's picture

Safety assigned to Moore playing ten yards off ? Assigning a linebacker to pass protect against Moore. = poor defensive play calling. That in its simplest form is not putting people in a position to succeed.

Re-post:

I am Upset. Watching them play like that was rough. Coach Meyer, in my opinion is a good guy, but as a head coach he is Not the man for this job.

He does not develop NFL Players. Coaches around him do. At Florida he had Mullen as his OC When he Won Those Two National Championships, and whoever else on that STAFF.

In 2014 He Had Herman at OC, and a Great Staff. Coaches get Too Much Credit for their Success, when Those around them deserve just as Much. Not Everyone one is a Phil Jackson, Nick Saban, Bill Belichick, OR Gino Auriemma, Andy Reid.....

Does NOT matter what sport it is. There are great Coaches. And there’re coaches who can just, Talk the Talk.

This Team For the second Year in a row, got out mannned. It is NOT the talent Around them. It’s the coaching. The Head Coaching to be Exact. That 4th Down Call in the red Zone, Classic Meyer. Bad decision after Bed decision. A Panic of a Move, instead of taking the Points and switching momentum.

I’ll say it again. This Needs to be Day and Grinch’s Team. The Sooner OSU realizes that, sooner they climb back up. Meyer and Schiano are Not the men for this job. Maybe Great guys, but not great Coaches. The play, and Development of these Players says it All.

I can’t remember, which player Tweeted on Twitter, but it was a Former OSU Football Player. He tweeted last year, that Meyer is not great at Developing Football Players.

Great Coaches Do Both. Develop Men and Great Athletes. It’s time for this Team to Make a change. Only a matter of time before they realize that.

It's time to move on.  Two days of this BS about that game is enough.  Time to get amnesia and prepare for the future.  #1 goal is win the East Div and then a B1G championship.  That is all they can control.

Jake, you wrote:

If we learned anything on Saturday, it is that a one-dimensional offense will not be able to compete in the Big Ten. As long as the Bucks fail to move the ball on the ground, they cannot count on winning anything.

You sir, are so correct with this paragraph.  If we cannot run the ball, we can forget about beating MSU, TTUN, and possibly Maryland.  Our linemen are just getting whooped, whether it's they are not getting leverage, having problems with the RPO, or whatever.  Maybe the staff needs a "hot word" for Haskins to yell when he hands the ball off to the back so the line knows to continue their blocks downfield, I don't know.  All I do know is like you wrote, if we cannot run the football, we will NOT win the Big Ten.

What's round on the ends and high in the middle? Tell me if you know!

HS

On called RPOs the line is supposed to run block, period. The reason this doesn’t work for OSU is the OLine can’t run block.

Not that I know jack, but that was frustrating I'll add my 2 cents.  I like the idea of going with Tate on short yardage and red zone, worked for Meyer with Tebow as a freshman.  Try some more deep passes, its not like with OSU depth they would ever get tired, they can rotate them out after a deep route.  If they are still running like crap against Nebraska, maybe sit the first team O-line for a series.  Unless they think this is the fault of one or two guys that can be replaced but they need to light a fire under them somehow.
