Kerry Coombs returns to Ohio State as the team's secondary coach and defensive coordinator.
If Davis or Schiano finish the season, then there needs to be serious talk about making more serious coaching changes. Urban has already used up his one freebie with the Zach Smith debacle. It's clear now that Urban cant make the tough decisions.
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
Real easy...Fire Schiano
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Just the pass defense? I agree that is part of it, but I also see this defense consistently being gashed by the run. And an offense that can't score a touchdown against Purdue until the 4th quarter. I would say we are looking at a decline of the entire team.
When does BB season start?
Onward and upward! Go Buckeyes!
Purdue is going to throw on almost everyone. Giving up 2 long TD runs to a team that really can't run — and the first one came at 28-13, when it was still sort of a ball game — was probably the bigger sin.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
First easy fix....back linebackers off the line. Second fix mix in zone with these younger def backs
entire defensive scheme is broken
3rd fix, if you play up on the receiver, please get ur hands on him. That's DB rule number 3.
This is my thing. If you're going to play man coverage, you have to get a jam on the line and I haven't seen one DB try to jam/redirect the receiver on the snap. That leads to no disruption in the timing of the route and the DB ends up getting ran by easily. Then they have to hand-fight downfield to try to regain the advantage.
Johnny, I appreciate your writing. It's nice to still have you around. Here's hoping the Bucks make some improvements. #GlassHalfFull?
It was a catch.
I feel now like I felt when Braxton went down in 2014. I am NOT drawing parallels, so please don't accuse me of that. But my attitude has now changed in that I no longer expect anything from this team. That might be cathartic. Take what I can get, but don't be so worked up. Unfortunately, that could also be described as a coping mechanism.
Bill Davis' "corner turn" he saw recently must've been straight down a blind alley.
Once a Buckeye, Always a Buckeye
He really is an idiot just showing up to get a check
But he was Urbans best man at his wedding so unfortunately I don’t see him going anywhere..
Then Urban isn't doing his job because that bum needs to be on the damn street. His group is not coached well PERIOD.
To be fair to Bill, the entire defense (outside of the d line) is poorly coached. Larry is the only one that should be employed, by OSU, next year. Hell Ash will be available again!
They did some things early that I liked, Harrison especially. Remember that with 3 minutes left in the first half, we had allowed just 7 points. That's more than respectable against Purdue.
But they obviously lost poise as the pressure mounted. The D could not pick up the offense, and vice versa.
Do these count as tough questions?
I hate the offseason.
Maybe we miss that Coombs guy.
Seriously. Fire some of the chumps we have now and then back up the money truck to Coombs driveway. There is a reason why we have DB's go 1st round every year, and it's pretty obvious it was because of Coombs.
I think the defense played good but the offense just didn't help them out all that much. It seemed like they were always on the field. The. Throw in penalties that extended drives and it was all down hill.
I respectfully disagree ... you can’t say the defense played well in a game that they gave up 49 to Purdue. The same Purdue that lost to EMU.
7 came off a pick 6. The D played pretty well for 3 quarters, but they fell apart in the 4th quarter. It was pretty clear the team was demoralized.
I figured someone would call me out on that ... either way. They quit, which was absolutely gross to watch. Zero effort.
Pass defense? How about the run game?!?! I mean yesus christo, we have two 1,000 yard rusher/nfl talent guys back there!! I mean what the actual fuck.
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
Urban Meyer might wanna take that medication he was taking before to forget this ass whopping. Truth be told!! Defense is the worst ever.
Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.
2. Cant block/run
3. Youth and inexperience
Please write the article explaining how Purdue's 90th (or so) ranked defense stuffed a rag in the mouth of the Ohio State offense and stuffed them in their trunk. That's what's got me scratching my head.
Tailgate Fare Historical Archive
Bad red zone offense. 500 yards should always be enough to beat Purdue. 49 points given up is really bad as was the red zone offense.
First and goal from the 9 is really hard when you are no threat to run the ball.
We don't beat Farty or scUM playing like this and possible Maryland
Fickell, Coombs, and Warriner (as O-Line coach) were not only great position coaches, but were all local boys. I don't like bringing in ringers or friends. Davis needs to go, Studrawa needs to go, Grinch needs to go, Taver Johnson needs to go. Oh, and put Ryan Day back in the booth....
This is a wakeup call for those coaches, and the team will bounce back because Meyer has a history in getting more involved when things go south, not because the position coaches will get better, they won't.
Let's give Purdue credit though, they have been playing lights out since the QB change. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win the west, and c'mon, Tyler Trent will have a great final memory of Purdue playing OSU, he was so happy, and this despite the loss made me smile a little watching him smile
"When you're part of a team, you stand up for your teammates. Your loyalty is to them. You protect them through good and bad, because they'd do the same for you." Yogi Berra
Secondary bad, LB’s worse, this was a bed shitting of epic proportions from the $6M man on down. Haskins with 72 pass attempts, may be worse than JT L-R? Zero threat of a run game and no discipline anywhere, a cartwheeling DT roughing the kicker? This team was never a “#2 team in the nation” and if big corrections aren’t made, could easily lose to Sparty and lose big to UM.
When I was 6 I was thinking about this rivalry. This one is seared on your soul, It's ingrained through every part of your body. -Urban Meyer
They are disgustingly horrible. Don't get me wrong, probably great young men from good families, but should not be playing Div 1 football.
1. I knew Brohm would put scheme us he a master at that.
2. They realized they did not have the athletes so he attacked the scheme . We were out of position constantly.
"Vitalum Vitalis "
I don’t understand why we don’t play more zone?? Makes no sense. Urban says we want to “challenge every throw”... the problem is we aren’t challenging many throws at all and when we do it’s PI or facemask or holding or some other BS. And in press man, aren’t we supposed to “re-route” the receivers at the line to disrupt the timing? We rarely get our hands on them. Please bring back some of Chris Ash quarters coverage and sprinkle in some zone and man. If PURDUE can run man then zone and all of these different types of defensive looks than why can’t we??? The definition of STUPID is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. These players give so much time and effort and their physical well-being to play for this team and the fans pay out the rear end to support these coaches salaries- it’s time these coaches start earning their keep
The defense and special teams and their combined penalties torched us
Have to disagree, red zone offense killed us.
The fact that there are so many viable (and correct) answers shows you how poorly coached and prepared this team really is. I'm honestly embarrassed at the effort I'm seeing on the field this year, particularly from the guys getting paid millions of dollars not to fucking lose to Purdue by FOUR TOUCHDOWNS.
Redzone offense was offensive. Bad drive saving penalties are as good as a turnover.
The decline? We never had one to begin with...….
Isiah Pryor misses tackles constantly .
Red zone offense is horrible . “If”we got in a position to tie game we have the worst 2point plays ever .
What, throwing the ball straight sideways and hoping a guy can dance through traffic isnt reliable??
Why do I feel like we are the only school that gets 5* guys and does very little with them? Browning, Wade, Okudah... they have to be getting zero coaching.
Hello Outback bowl
I live in tampa I'll take it. LSU vs OSU? Maybe
Saw this posted on a national forum by a fan of another team, thought it was appropriate:
Could you imagine if Alabama has lost by 29 points to Tennessee (a 3-3 team like Purdue) today? That’s laughable to even think about yet that’s reality each of the last two years for OSU.
We aren't Alabama. We have had glaring warning signs for weeks now that were going to catch up to us if not now, then up in East Lansing, or against Michigan, in the B10 title game, or in a playoff blowout loss. The exposing happened to be at Purdue but it was coming. Alabama? Nope, they're a complete team.
Keep Ryan Day. Fire everyone else. Promote Ryan Day to head coach
Successful people do what they have to, whether they feel like it or not
Whole defense is busted and poorly coached
I was impressed with our pass defense through 2 quarters. They kept us in game until late in 3rd quarter. Beyond that, they were just sort of broken. Lot of injuries and guys playing hurt in that back 7. I expected Purdue to get points. I didn’t expect our offense to fail time and time again to complete drives, get yards on the ground when it mattered most.
"Woody would have wanted it that way"
Did Bill Young just lose his title of worst DC ever at OSU?
It was not just the pass defense that lost the game. Where is our running game? Slow ass linebackers are a joke and they pretty much let anybody on Purdue run up the middle or anywhere they wanted to. We have been pretenders waiting for the reveal and it was ugly. Let ‘s hope we beat Nebraska or Urban May very well lose this team. Let’s not even talk about how ugly it can get at MSU and at home against TTUN.
I support my Buckeyes to the end, let’s see if they have some fight in them the rest of the season. I hope so #GoBucks!
The linebackers just run into a mass of humanity in the middle of the line and get lost in the pile. Take themselves ut of plays constantly. I can't remember worse LB play at OSU ever. They fall for every fake in the book and don't recover. I like Harrison, he plays hard and can make plays, but every one of those guys is getting shortchanged by that joke of a LB coach and Urban needs to do his job and fire the bum I dont give a shit if he's a friend.
The defense is trying to play man and teams have isolated our field safety and linebackers in coverage all year long. Dline gets no pressure 90% of the time they rush 4. Need to stop being so basic. OU and Iowa exposed them last year and gave everyone else the blueprint. Why on earth they think running the same scheme with less talent will work is beyond me.
Opposing offenses do whatever the hell they want without fear of any kind. Where's the physicality? There's no toll to be paid at all. This team doesn't hit anyone. Hell, Defenders consistently get plowed over and hang on for dear life as the ball carrier falls ahead for 2 more yards. Over and over again.
No team is uncomfortable playing the Buckeyes. Simple as that. Sick of watching this crap.
C’mon. The defense hits. After the pass is thrown ... or or after the punt is in the air.
Pete Werner makes Storm Klein look like the second coming of LT.
Borland isn’t much better. Guy is painfully slow and undersized
harrison is out of position...a lot
Browning’s what they need but has had zero quality coaching and is lost
scheme overall is middle school level stupid.
Agreed. Borland is just way too slow to be out there.
Fields of Dreams
He couldn't cover The Fridge if he lined up at TE. Fridge would outrun him.
True. But he'll grade out as a "champion", no doubt. It's almost like the coaching staff is trying to convince someone else that they acually performed exceptionally well. You watch. Come Monday, 20 will grade out as a Champion, somehow. No matter what.. Then there will be an article about how 59 really played a great game and how 13 is a leader in the TE room. All champion grades. Fave this post, you'll see.
I wonder if Alex Grinch and Tavor Johnson are in over their heads?
The D gets the ink for the loss. And yes, they quit. But I can't believe that an Ohio State fan site.....one that has poked fun at the Big 12 for 5 + seasons, can't see that we are now them. Yards and yards of gaudy passing stats and nothing else.
Woody is spinning in his grave. Day and Wilson....are just the passing game equivalent of the same shit show that brought us the pitchforks for Beck and Warriner. And guess what? Those 2 guys are laughing their asses off right now.
The loss isn't unexpected. This is a young team. The defense has lost a lot of players on defense for several years now. It is hard to keep reloading with all the players leaving early. Fuller and the D-line are experienced but everyone else is a work in progress.
1) Bring back quarters as it helps the young players make decisions faster since it can be adapted to any offensive formation.
2) OSU needs a Darron Lee type cover linebacker
3) I could be wrong but I've noticed a lot of head across the chest tackling this year. I don't know if OSU is still teaching rugby tackling or not. But the tackling has been poor.
4) D-Line might need to do a bit more to keep the other team's linemen off of the linebackers.
Summary: Defense just needs to get back to basics.
1) Better run blocking. In my mind everything else is fine. But you have to be able to run the ball to give this defense a rest and to help inside the 10 yard line.
Did Urban Meyer and Hue Jackson have one of those Freaky Friday switches? Because the Buckeyes have been getting worse week after week and Urban keeps saying we had great practices and we're really close to putting it all together. Week after week, mediocre teams looks like title contenders because we can't really stop them. Week after week, we have stupid penalties, dropped passes and poor coaching. I think the identity of the team was clear with Ryan Day in charge. Now, there isn't one. Not sure why.
Alcohol will not solve any of your problems, but then again, neither will milk or water.
I haven't seen any change in identity and it is clear Ryan Day is still doing a great job on offense. Offense should have gotten more points. But you have a few drops and a back up kicker and that is what happens.
Oh and Rehire Coombs.... He is a communicator and the defense needs someone like this.
At some point you just accept you suck at parts of defense and go to a bend but not break scheme and just try and limit big plays. I don’t know why that hasn’t happened, awful teams are having career days against us and it’s pathetic.
Have to play assignment football and be able to tackle to do that. We can't do either of those things. LBs run themselves out of the plays and then safeties come up and dont even slow the ball carrier down as they pull total whiffs on them. That's not even mentioned all the absolute BONEHEAD idiot penalties we commit.
There is a lack of leadership and toughness on this team. They have plenty of talent . The coaching staff is too soft on them. The penalties, missed assignments, and basic fundamentals that don't look like there being taught. If these are being addressed then it's time to make a change , no matter how much talent the players making the same mistakes have. Someone needs to take charge and get in someone's face and fire them up. They just look flat
It's time to see what the man is made of when someone smacks him in the mouth
When you say the coaching staff is too soft on them, a part of that relates to job security. I don't believe there has been a significant change in anyone's playing time during the course of the season, other than what's been dictated by injury (except maybe Victor becoming a rotation player again after he barely played early on). That's pretty unusual, especially considering how many problem areas we had even prior to the loss.
No one is playing with any fear they might get replaced.
Oh and we need to recruit a tight-end. The tight-end blocking this year has been awful so far. It is killing the run game. Freaking hit someone guys.
Surprised how physically and mentally weak this defense is. They have literally no football smarts. And they’ve had zero good coaching. Wasting money on Schiano and Grinch
I don't see anything getting fixed quickly. At this point in the season it's far more likely that this is just who they are - a bad defense and a one-dimensional offense that has major weaknesses too. They've been getting worse, not better, that's the most disappointing thing. The LB coach needs fired NOW. NOW. Urban keeping him on because he's a friend is absolute bullshit, Urban has a job to do and we are past time to cut ties. Do your job Urban and ditch him and then get to work re-evaluating the rest of that staff while you're at it.
And figure out why the OL sucks so bad and has no push in them at all and why we have no offense other than throwing the ball straight over to the sideline.
Michigan is easily better right now and we have a lot of work to do to not get worked over by them. Playoff - who cares. Even if we fought our way in we aren't good enough to belong in the playoff.
The defense runs around like their lost. Is the offensive line the out of shape that they can't fire off the ball? It was one of the worst lack-luster performances I've seen of OSU football in a while. Where's the pride, the refuse to lose, they gave up in the 4th qtr.
The coaches need to sit back and take a good look in the mirror and ask themselves maybe we need to rate character and toughness a little more when recruiting. It's not all about how big you are or how fast you are but heart has to factor in there somewhere
I actually don’t think there’s anything wrong with the DBs. Most of the time you see them chasing because a LB is lost in coverage.
While QBs can pick apart zone schemes, it isn’t as instantaneous as a wide open slant against man coverage. It takes time to develop, and it can help our d line get some pressure with QBs waiting for the zone to open. Just a suggestion.
Man defense is not working with the lack of linebacker play we have seen.
Im sorry what? I love the DBs but Okudah is late in coverage almost EVERY time , Wade is still in experienced , Sheffield is a hit or miss & Arnette cant cover to save his life. Now Pryor? Never seen so many bad angles and missed tackles in my life , especially on an osu team that historically has had AMAZING SS & Wint? Worse football player ever
They better wake the he'll up. Otherwise sparty and TTUN is going to put a couple more ass whoopin's on us.v
I agree Hateblue. Our linebacker play is horrible. I've never seen a group play so consistently out of position. I believe that ,that coach needs to be moved or fired.
Fired. 100% fired. And long overdue.
Who else is incredibly underwhelmed by Grinch so far? I tried to see past the fact that Jim fucking Bollman put up 42 on him as the DC at WSU, but my goodness.
Agree , he was a great hire. WSU had such a shutdown defense when he was there
I know I'm over-reacting but it just pains me to see an OSU defense play this bad this year. There defiantly needs to be some coaching changes in the near future. (LIKE TOMARROW ). Offensively I feel they may need to try a few younger offensive lineman to see if there a little better in the run game. (Especially rt. Tackle)
Joe Burrow may make the playoffs with LSU.
As great as Dwayne is, I doubt we do because of our other issues.
"Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else." - Judy Garland
A total mental breakdown. After all the stats, data, metrics, etc it all comes down to the power of observation...which is there was no sense of urgency, no one screaming at each other and getting everyone to play “hard”. There was no leadership out there.
The LB Corp of Werner/Borland is a distaster. Which opponent would respect or game plan against them? None. They don’t need to. Can it possibly be true that there are no better LBs on the team or is this another urban Meyer’s trust and loyalty in more senior guys? I don’t write this to point the fingers at the kids, but to highlight the major problem area and that it ultimately is the coaches fault for not doing anything about it.
Oh, opponents will game plan against them alright. By going after them. Really in any way. Run at them, throw at whoever they are responsible for covering, read them, misdirect them take your choice of ways to expose them and you'll have some success on offense. Fire that bum Bill Davis.
Can’t remember a defense as bad as this at OSU...2 weeks to think about this one, ouch
Why was the tenth assistant coach added? Thought he was supposed to be this young, aggressive whiz kid but the only changed is having the LBs at the line of scrimmage? Games like this are just frustrating because top tier teams don't struggle week after week to average teams and then lose by 30 to average teams.
