I hope someone didn’t realize they down voted this^!  I have been at the past two games and am very frustrated. I like to think of myself as a “grounded” fan. I can’t figure some things out though. Why do we play man up and not bump. Why are our LB’s getting muttled in the traffic and not reading well. I hope we take an honest self evaluation or I’m afraid of the future.

Amen. If the fundamental problem is gap integrity and maintaining the gap yet the problem is constantly reoccurring. Is it a personnel problem on the field or is it a coaching problem in terms of teaching the defense?

Either way, something has to change. The truth is our defense has some significant problems that will lead to loses, if not corrected.

HS
ARMYBUCK's picture

Lets call a spade a spade.  Werner isn't wrong about gap integrity but failed to mention when they do keep gap integrity they can't tackle. I agree CB24, something has to change, if not scheme, then accountability.

Agreed. Excuses excuses excuses.  This defense looks completely lossy at nearly every position. I know Saban, Dabo, and Riley wouldn’t allow these horrible performances week after week.

HS
Buck_Michigan's picture

I completely agree with this statement the reason those coaches are so successful is they're not hiring their best man from their wedding Urban Meyer as much as I love him has an atmosphere of nepotism and unfortunately accepts subpar coaches in his program when he could get the best there's no reason this team shouldn't be as good as a Saban-coached team but Meyer favors friends over talented coaches. This is his Achilles heel.

HS
Madaris32's picture

If that's the case, the athletic director needs to do his damn job! Urban is acting like a position coach is more important than the damn program. Which we clearly saw with Zach Smith. Urban needs to start holding coaches and players accountable. We see this bull crap every week, because no one is being held accountable. You don't have to be at practice to see this. Is obvious with the scheme and play on Saturdays. We keep seeing the same bull every damn week. Urban do something, this is your damn team. It's okay to change what's not working. We play more players out of position than I've ever seen. Hilliard is a true inside linebacker, yet we play him at outside linebacker. Prince has been sorry since he stepped on campus, but he keeps getting the nod to start. We see other top flight coaches make changes all the time, but Urban just keep doing the same stuff all year. You think other coaches would've waited until the end of 2015 to fire beck? The same thing is happening on the defensive side of the ball. Leaders who are afraid to lead/adjust says something. How many times do you all need to see another failed season because of our stubborn coaching staff. Wake up!

Without Nick, they aren't getting enough pressure on the QB. So they blitz a LB or two and that makes them vulnerable for that little slant route. Good thing their QB missed a couple throws.

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

HS
JoeCleveland's picture

I completely disagree... While missing Nick is a huge loss that is not the problem.... Teams have had enough film on OSU from the season to realize the defense keeps making the same mistakes....    The LB's are horrible..   They RPO us to death.   Getting the ball out of the QB's hands fast enough to not let the DL get to the QB because our DB's play way off the ball and the LB's are always out of position and frankly look lost 75% of the time....     This will continue until the coaching staff corrects those mistakes...

HS
Major H's picture

There might have been a few RPOs, but what I'm referring to are the 3 step drops and throw to the slot receiver doing a quick slant. There was no play action or RPO on those quick hitters.

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

HS
UAGoldenbear84's picture

That slant route killed us...yet we made NO adjustment.  Line up our DB right in the WRs face and jam him at the LOS.  At least get him off a free run on that 10-12 yard slant.  Put him on his ass at the LOS.

And after 7 weeks, no matter the personnel (5 starters out this week), the same problems persist. To me that says its coaching/scheme, not personnel. The players look to lack confidence in the scheme and that is why they are constantly out of position. They are trying to do too much.

Booker, if you can believe it, is probably even more clueless at the snap than the starters.

We don’t need the DL playing ‘pin their ears back’ pass rush to the QB on every play.  More stunting.  More eating blockers.  More teaching so the front seven can anticipate and make quality reads.

 I miss quality coaching.

HS
Madaris32's picture

We need to play different defensive tackles. We start recruiting man eating DT's and of course we barely play them and we don't play the style of defense that tailors to them. Makes no sense. Our coaching staff is clueless. Schiano, this isn't early 2000's. We play press man, but don't touch the receivers. How does that even make sense?

The team is what it is. It’ll live and die in Haskins arm. Defense will continue to be porous and the running game won’t be dominating, though both will have their moments here and there.  OSU’s best chance is that the Big 10is weak year and they win everything until the playoffs. Was able to watch a good bit of LSU v UGA. Just sat down for late Q3 of ttun v Wisky. LSU has a good D and a good DC. Something Danielson said during the broadcast was interesting - LSU was my gettingnpass rush so Aranda decided to just rush 4 (or even 3) and drop everyone into coverage, occasionally would  mix it up with blitz/pressure. Not Schiano. Same scheme. Beat one’s head against the wall. Watching ttun. Brown is also a good DC of a good D. He also likes an aggressive, man-to-man scheme, but he’s got his LBs 3-4 yards off the LOS. Allows them to see more and keep the play in front of them and he can still easily bring added pressure with a blitz. Our LBs still too easily get fooled by play action or RPOs, but they are also stressed by either getting caught up in the wash or dropping into coverage.

Bad coaching + Bad scheme = Bad defense.

I guess Schiano and Davis being NFL guys expect NFL execution and reads from 18-21 year olds, but watch some NFL tomorrow and you won’t see the Schiano scheme being run. NFL offenses have been borrowing a lot of the spread and RPO concepts from college and IMO NFL DCs have figured out the 1990s aggressive press man-to-man and bringing LBs up to the LOS has become old school.

The problem is Meyer delegates personnel decisions and schemes to his  assistants and it is obvious they are failing. The LBs are the worst in 30 years yet they keep playing the same lousy guys. Which is pretty close to meaningless at this point in the season. They're not playing well, plain and simple. Yes, they are undefeated. They were also undefeated in 2015, with basically the entire team back after winning the national title. Yet, it was easy to see they weren't playing well. And then it finally bit us, against MSU. Corners and safeties are most vulnerable on slant and crossing plays.   EXTREMELY difficult to not allow receiver to get a step on those.  The problem is that when the receiver catches the ball in the middle he is supposed to be met by LBs who are God knows where on many of those plays.

I don’t understand the depth positioning of our linebackers. That obviously opens up the slant.

But it also commits the linebackers to gaps that the offense can see before the snap.

Running backs head toward b gap, juke outside, and crease us consistently.

This team needs to stop thinking they can win every man to man matchup, telegraph the defensive call, and defy the offense to do the obvious.

When we got THE stop against Penn State, we had a creative defensive call.

Our LB's are the worst group I've seen in 25 years...    They are constantly out of position scheme wise.  which is coaching   but they are also getting sucked into the wrong gaps as well on RPO's  which if anyone has noticed teams are doing to us at will.    That's situational awareness which it seems they lack.      The DB's need to bump/press at the line more too to throw WR's off their pattern....   The opponents game plan every week seems to be short slant passes getting the ball out of the QB's hands early which leaves little or no time for the Pass rush to get to the QB..  which is our strength right now on defense...      Coaches need to re-evaluate how they attack the offense.

HS
DHaiden's picture

I hate to say this but if things do not change, either scheme or personnel wise, we will drop at least 1 or 2 games by this season. I love my Buckeyes but I see this coming very soon. I watched Sparty beat Penn State and I have flashbacks of games where Dantonio has bested us. I see Purdue coming up and have flashbacks of Virginia Tech. Heck, even Meat Chicken is playing better so Hairball is getting some momentum.

It is not difficult to see where our weaknesses are and that teams are exploiting that. It is only a matter of time when we see another bear front and Haskins isn't given the time and all the sudden our passing game is nothing until that is figured out. My point being, if things are not changed than we will drop a game or two and we will be left wondering why Urban did not do this or that. I cannot go another year seeing Bama hoist another trophy in the Title game.

In a 4-2-5, with the sometimes called "star position" as a hybrid safety/linebacker who can help in run support, sure. He is fast. He also seems to have good instincts. But there is a night and day difference between him and others before him like McMillian, Hawk, Lauranitius....in the ability to tackle hard runners.

Watched really closely yesterday to see what the linebackers were doing. It seemed they were just running into and engaging minnesotas oline, completely taking themselves out of the play unless they got lucky and went to the right gap. Its overaggressiveness and/or bad coaching. Be patient and read things and i think theyll be fine. DBs were much better and the d line will be fine when close to healthy

I thought the DBs as a whole are playing better as well. Even when Arnette was out there in the first quarter he showed he has gotten better made a heck of an open field tackle. Sheffield and Okudah are starting to not only look for the ball but actually are starting to know the routes the receivers are running. Will they still get beat from time to time ? Yeah. But it will be a contested play.

"That said, slow starts have been a recurring problem for Ohio State’s defense – the Buckeyes have trailed in the second quarter or later in four of their last five games "

That's because they don't make adjustments during the flow of the game in the 1st half.....They always seem to wait until halftime. Eventually that's going to get you beat.

We need a vocal, in your face leader on D!  Someone to be that "a-hole-ish" kinda guy to rant and rave a bit....get things stirred up.  I see very little emotion on this team.  Be Gerry Bertier.

It could be worst.......I remember several weekends of hold your breath games during the Buckeye 2002 National Championship run. Cincy 23-19, N'Western 27-16, Wisconsin 19-14, Penn State 13-7, Purdon't 10-6, Illinois 23-16 OT, Ichigan 14-9, Then of course the championship game #1 Miami 31-24 dbl OT as a 300 point underdog. That was a not so fun year to be a Buckeyes fan that turned into a great year to be one. I'm feeling the same way about this team. One can only hope the end results are similar :) Tighten up defense.
