9 Units Strong!
Expecting some ups and downs with the new faces, but think this team is going to be exciting game in and out.
Holtmann is refortifying the program's foundation before our very eyes.
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
Agree 100%. With two of our first three being UC and Creighton--that is a tough start. There may be bumps in the road, but I think by the end of the year, we'll be very good. Lots of great young talent.
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
Agree that it will be a tough start but can't help but believe that such a start will do more to help mature a young team than playing a bunch of "cream puffs." Should provide a great learning experience.
Hard work and defense. Love Holtmanns style of play. If we can get these young kids some confidence with the ball in their hands, they will rise quickly past that #8 projection. I'm a believer!
The feel of something special is brewing in Columbus!

What is the point of nameing a conference preseason player of the year?
"The Edge is where average stops and elite begins"
The same reasons preseason polls, preseason conference standings, a preseason All-B1G team, watch lists for various national awards, etc all exist:
Mostly to get hype going and spark interest/discussion in the season, but also to help orient expectations a little bit.
It's something for sportswriters to write about. There is a lot of off-season time to fill for each particular sport.
I'm with you. I don't mind the preseason All American or preseason All Conference selections as much, but that seems like overkill to me.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
This year could be a learning year where a young team takes some beatings as roles get sorted out. But I just have a gut feeling that the team will do a bit more than that. It’s easy as fans to focus on your own team’s shortcomings, but there isn’t a team in the B1G that doesn’t have some questions to answer this season.
starting five: K. Wesson, Young, A. Wesson, Muhammed, and Woods?
or does Jallow start on the wing?
15-1 is SWEET!
Leaving out CJ?
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
I think you missed CJ Jackson as I think he will be one of the starters at guard.
I'm thinking he may end up coming off the bench. I say due to everything I hear (positive) about Woods and Muhammed, and I think C.J. could be a major spark off the bench. We'll see...
I think if anything, it would be a 3 guard lineup with CJ, Woods and Muhammad, but I don't see CJ coming off the bench.
I think your starting 5 will be CJ, Woods, Jallow, A. Wesson and K. Wesson because of their ability to play defense...or CJ, Lu, Woods, A. Wesson and K. Wesson.
Defense is going to be key and those are all strong defensive players.
CJ Jackson is a 3 yr starter! (And a good one at that).
Unless something tragic happens, there’s ZERO percent chance he’s not in the starting lineup.
Yeah, there is zero chance CJ Jackson is OSU’s sixth man.
Starting five: CJ, Woods, Musa, Andre, and Kaleb. I think Holtmann goes with experience to start the season.
Muhammad is the first guard off the bench and Young is the first interior player. Potter is the direct sub for Kaleb only. LeDee and Washington will both play meaningful minutes. Ahrens might get situational minutes to start the season and could get more if he performs well.
Agree with nearly all of this. The only thing I am not certain about is consistent minutes for Ledee, especially if Kyle Young makes a big jump in development.
But I guess you could argue if Young doesn't develop or regresses from last year, Ledee will play a lot.
I am leaning towards the former.
I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
I have no doubt they will be competitive. The non-conference slate is brutal so not going to expect an undefeated run or even a winning record. But I am hopeful the elevated competition will elevate our play in the B1G.
"I find your lack of kalua disturbing" - Darth Lebowski
At one time back when dinosaurs roamed the earth tOSU made a run at being a "football AND basketball" power. And not just an exclusive gridiron (blast the word elite)...and what up until recently became just Matta 20+ W seasons.
Our new bball HC has brought with him (backed up by the evidence of his recruiting, & last years 2nd place finish) a very strong "hope" of quite possibly taking us back to dining with the Final Four roundballerz !
I'm All In !
Owning. skunk. weasels. Is. Tradition.
I am trying to decipher this post and I'm not sure I get it, but I will just say that prior to his last few declining years, Thad had OSU as a regular conference contender (and won it, what, 5 times?), made it to the Final Four twice (including a NC runner-up to one of the best college bball teams in recent memory), and at one point had the longest S16 streak in the nation.
If Holtmann can bring us anywhere close to that level, we should be very happy. I think this coming season is probably a step back from last season due to probable offensive struggles and a lack of talented experience, but I think starting with 2019-2020 and beyond it is looking like good times ahead.
the empire never ended
Might I ask the meaning of your username?
A play on "no matter what" but also that back when Thad was coach and I was posting opinions online about the basketball team, the acknowledgment is still that even if I disagree with some choice or disappointed with a loss or recruiting miss or whatever, I was/am "No Matta," i.e. I'm not one of the best coaches our basketball program has ever had, if not the best. So it was a sign of respect.
Yeah, it can be exciting, but the real work of rebuilding the team—after losing so many players from last season—will take place this year. And perhaps next as well.
It may get bumpy. But we must keep our hopes up, if not our expectations.
I feel like this is the type of team a guy like Tom Izzo made his name with. Starting off slow with the integration of new players and then hitting on all cylinders and peaking come March when it is time to make a run.
There is talent on this squad. How it all fits together is yet to be seen, but I think (despite early season ups and downs) they will be ready to make some noise come tourney time. It will be fun to watch and see how they all grow together along the way.
"The height of human desire is what wins, whether it's on Normandy Beach or in Ohio Stadium."
I seriously cannot wait until November...I am ready for Bball season.
I think we have the ability to shock some people again this year. If Young and Jallow make jumps as well as K. Wesson, we could really be ready for a big season.
Creighton and UC early will be tests but thats all good, lets tip already!!
I'm psyched! Go Buckeyes!
Onward and upward! Go Buckeyes!
