"Because I couldn't go for three"
You know your level of genius, Barf...but this might be your best yet.
I had to run away high, so I wouldn't come home low...
Mods and the powers that be:
Thank you very much. next......
Congrats to the Buckeyes for another convincing win as they prepare to get in conference play. Nick Bosa- he can’t be replaced, but for the coming weeks it gives other highly rated backups invaluable playing time. Weber- just keeping fingers crossed with him. Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game. There is no better team in College Football that has the comprehensive depth that OSU has.
Lastly, I was expecting TCU to help OSU by winning the rest of the way, and vis-a-viz OSU winning out helps TCU. TCU played pathetic and got embarrassed by Texas. Sorry 11Warriors.
My thoughts from the game:
1) Don’t look now, but Paris Campbell made some great catches that he was not making in the past. Credit to Hartline?
2) Is it just a coincidence that the game Urban is back is when we exploded with a laundry load of dumb penalties after playing so disciplined the first three games?
3) Hilliard and Booker looked really good out there and made some big plays. Would love to see them out there more often. Saw more of Borland missing tackles at the line and Werner just getting blocked out of relevancy.
4) Ohio State D looking like they could be a liability against an elite offense. They give up big plays again and continue to lack discipline.
5) I really like Matt Millen’s analysis. He knows the Buckeyes well and he has a lot of knowledge of the game. I like when he critiqued what the players did well and could do better including breaking down the play and describing different techniques.
Hard to be hype for Tulane. I expect laser focus next week. Ugly 49-6 win...god we are spoiled.
1) Parris Campbell looks much improved this season and it couldn't be coming at a better time.
2) FIRE URBAN MEYER! HE'S A CURSE ON THIS TEAM! s/
3) Hilliard does look capable but remember this was Tulane. As for Booker we've seen what a disaster he can be as a starting LB. He did look good in this one though. So did Baron Browning.
4) Biggest thing the D needs to work on are those over the shoulder deep throws. The corners have a habit of not finding the football on those plays (though Okudah was better at it today). Also Pryor was much improved this week in run support IMO as was Browning. Davon Hamilton is also coming into his own right when we need him to considering we didn't have Landers in this one and Dre'Mont was banged up last week.
5) Matt Millen's a former player so his expert analysis of the game is to be expected but I've heard him say some of the stupidest things on commentary before as well. He can be very hit or miss. But everyone in that state up north also hates him in unison because of what he did to the Lions for 8 years as GM so that gives him a pass in my book lol.
Final analysis - we'll see how this team performs under the lights in front of the White Out next week but I think this team is better than PSU (who I wasn't all that impressed with last night against Illinois). They have a lot of things to get worked out on defense though.
biggest thing they need to work on is stopping the chunk runs. We have seen corners each year get better as the season goes (aside from 2013) Linebackers need to pick it the fuck up.
Corners weren't the problem in 2013, the safeties were (especially after Bryant went down). And yes, our LBs need to pick it up. At this point I would start Browning over Borland in the middle (he looked much improved in this game). Borland looks like he's slimmed down to a concerning weight for a LB since his injury and was bouncing off of RBs trying to tackle them in this game. Same goes for Werner. Replace him with Hilliard and keep Harrison where he is and run with that group. Browning appears to be starting to get it somewhat (though this was Tulane).
Corners 100% were the problem in 2013. The entire reason Withers was sent packing. Bryant went down later in the season
Withers didn't coach the corners, Coombs did. He coached the safeties. At least post facts if you're going to comment. Bryant went down against Wisconsin which was at about the midway point. That's not late in the season. And everything got worse in the secondary after he went down. It was quite noticeable considering he was replaced with Pitt Brown.
Long interception with perfect positioning was nullified by an offside penalty.
That was a beautiful pick by Okudah. Too bad it was on a throw-away play.
I survived Cooper, and I hate Tai Streets.
Nice observations, Silver. I love to hear Matt talk, he really knows the game and technique. He is my second favorite, right behind our beloved Buckeye Chris Spielman.
I thought Baron Browning had a coming out party - his best game yet I felt.
I know this may be nit-picking, but I was concerned that our second team only put up 7 second half points. I know they were still up against the ones from Tulane but I have to believe our twos are still way better than their ones. Also, too many penalties and two each on Berry (hold on extra point) and Gant (two holds on kick offs/punt return). WE MUST MINIMIZE this, can be the difference of a win or loss in a close game.
Haskins has got to be one of the top three players at this point in the season for the Heisman Trophy. Matt even mentioned how great his touch is on the deep ball. This young many is coming of age, and our WRs are getting better every game. This could be a special year.
What's round on the ends and high in the middle? Tell me if you know!
Great points! I agree this could be a special year that’s why I don’t want the defense to fudge it up for us. We all know defense wins Nattys. That would suck to waste what looks like our best offense ever on a year that our D has holes. Let’s see how we do against PSU next week. I’m really hoping these pieces can begin to come together.
This D has me concerned, Sniper. To their credit, they locked it down after the touchdown, but the LBs again were out of position on several runs of 10+ yds. A guy like Miles Garrett has the ability to make the Bucks pay in points for similar mistakes.
I also look at how Texas (Texas!) handled TCU’s offense. I mean, Texas can’t have a better D than us can they?? They looked very solid.
I saw that too and thought the same thing.
Just amazing, Barf. I laughed hard for about two minutes after that one.
Welcome home coach
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Boy you could tell that he is NOT happy with the play of the back end of the defense
You WIN with people.
Agreed and those are the things that should make us better after practice.
I hope so, Linga. The D personnel mix was “fluid”, to say the least, and that’s a GREAT thing in a game like this. But it’s about time to get things fixed and settle on the lineup. Happy Valley at night is no time for learning new things on D. It should be settled by now. Let’s go get those bastards on both sides of the ball.
+1 for usage of “bastards” when referring to PSU.
Wave bye bye
There's no points for second place, gentlemen.
DWAYNE HASKINS!! I’ve never seen a buckeye qb do what he does. But I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anybody besides deshaun Watson pass like this in college. Certainly not at Alabama.
Gotta consider more playing time for Hilliard and Booker. . But it was Browning’s day.
Arnette can tackle.
I'd actually consider using Booker as an extra DE to help offset Bosa being out in the coming weeks. I still don't trust him in coverage enough to start him at LB again and he did show quite a bit of pass-rushing prowess in this game.
Fields of Dreams
Backups need some work. Horizontal play calling does too.
"Age wrinkles the body, quitting wrinkles the soul" Woody Hayes
Back ups need a lot of work, they really looked sloppy. Too many penalties on the defensive side, they need to cleat that up.
LOL! Pun intended?
I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
I’m thinking cleating would help.
It never looks good with mass substitutions. Would like to get tate in with the 1st string Oline for a series. When they turned him loose passing deep they actually moved the ball.
Didn't he play with the 1st string Oline on the 4th TD drive?
The 5th drive, correct. And he led us to a TD. Just like he did with the first team two times the week before last.
Got the W. Got the cover. Got out healthy (assuming that Weber is okay). Got to get ready for PSU.
"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
yes. Weber please be ok.
We have created trouble for ourselves in organizations by confusing control with order. -Margaret J. Wheatley
Seeing as how Weber's been held out of warm ups for the past two weeks and clearly hasn't been 100% on the field, I'm really surprised at the lack of coverage/inquiries as to his health. When he got hurt yesterday he threw the football out of frustration as if he's been dealing with something and expected it to happen.
Good win and on to the nitty kitties.
"Old minds are like old horses; you must exercise them if you wish to keep them in working order."
I don't know how Haskins isn't the Heisman frontrunner.
They're all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.
Tua. It’s all about Tua right now.
There's a national sports network campaigning for him?
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
He has to be top 4 after todays performance. Bama QB solid number 1. It is September. So much football ahead.
Haskins looks great.
Todd McShay didn’t even have him listed in his top 5 QBs for next year’s draft. I still don’t get how Stidham from Auburn is considered the top or second QB.
That may be because he is a first year starter who is not clearly ready to declare. Unless he routinely ranks players who would be eligible regardless of their suspected or known intentions.
Perhaps so. I had not thought of that.
A couple weeks ago he didn't. McShay has been raving about Haskins since TCU though.
That’s good to know. I had sensed that Haskins was lacking the love in gear types of conversations. But it seems to be picking up now.
# of 300 yard games in a season - Haskins I think is 2nd or 3rd in the OSU record books right now.
and sat the 2nd half in 2 of 4 games.
Tua and McSorley play almost the entire game Haskins as far as productivity is vastly superior
"Vitalum Vitalis "
I'll be interested to see the spread for next week. I'm guessing it's OSU -2.5 or something.
My guess is around 7-9 points. 2.5 is way too low.
I'm guessing between 3 and 6.
"You're welcome for the house I built."
Wanna bet on what the spread will be?
What's the over/under on the spread?
Hoping Weber is good for Saturday.
I think Urban said it was his foot and he should be fine to go for next week thankfully.
Great first half; defense not there yet BUT improving; slobs a little off today, not much push. Wide receivers CLEARLY better under Hartline, coming back to the ball. On to Crappy Valley.
Go Bucks Beat Nitty Kitty's!!
The only hard day was yesterday
Agree with everything you wrote, especially about the D and the Slobs. The D was out of position several times in the first half on running plays that went for 10+. Based upon what I saw from PSU last night, that could be a disaster in the making. And the Slobs seemed to get no push at all, but their pass protection was excellent. BTW, Prince jacking up Kennedy really showed just how fast and violent his hands are. That was brutal.
I didn't watch the PSU game last night. But the stats suggest PSU's 1st team offense played all but 5 plays. So IMHO, their offense doesn't look all that good.
My favorite team? Whoever is playing TTUN.
I did watch it. In the first half, they were mediocre, at best. But their run game got going big time in the second half, with Garrett getting 200. I hate that school, but they’re good. This one coming up has me nervous.
Garrett? Don't you mean Miles Sanders? No Miles Garrett plays for PSU lol.
Yeah, Sanders. Thanks for the catch!

Hats off to Mr Violi. Played in the best damn band in the land, and in true Ohio fashion (See the American Civil War for details), went on to serve in Europe during WW2
Ca good call! Should have been The title of a piece here.
Haskins is the TRUTH!
Urban Meyer >Jim Harbaugh for ever and ever, Amen. 0
A baby faced assassin.
Next week is going to be a shootout of potentially historic proportions unless the back 7 make a miraculous stride in the right direction.
We've gotta drill slants/crossing routes and have the DBs defend the deep ball because that's gonna be McSorleys bread and butter. Miles Sanders scares me as well, especially with our tackling issues.
It's gonna be offense vs offense in a battle of who makes the least mistakes.
I agree 740 . McSorley lives on the slant and seam routes. I think we can mitigate his runs unless he gets hot and can improvise. I wasn’t impressed with psu run defense however I’m a little concerned about our run offense. I don’t see a lot of movement of bodies when we run the ball.
You mean the same run offense that gashed a good TCU defense last week? They'll be fine. The lack of run game this week was dictated more by game script than anything from what I saw. Though the Slobs for sure could've played better in this one.
This was a glorified practice for Ohio state, I wouldn't put too much stock into whatever we saw vs Tulane as compared to what we saw vs TCU.
Better rush 3.. drop the rest .. slants could be open all game were today
"To The House"
Looking back for the ball would be a good start.
Haskins still slingin. backups should look better against Tulane than they did. Even though solid, D-line not nearly as disruptive without Landers & Bosa - expected I guess but still could be an issue against PSU
Class of 2005
The dipshit penalties need to stop. 60 yards on ST alone. Four games in and the DL still doesn't know where to line up. Remember in 2015 against MSU an offsides against Bosa sustained one of MSU's scoring drives. Today an offsides negated an interception. Two unsportsmanlike conducts. Why OSU players feel the need to get chippy against a team like Tulane is beyond me.
But perspective. We didn't lose by 14 to Old Dominion.
Yeah, I don’t know what the deal was. Shift change in the coaches? Shouldn’t be. It was Tulane for Gods sake. Don’t look at the score. Look at the tape. 2nd half we had issues. Our 2-3-4 string should be moving the ball against their 1’s. Back up D has some good tape to learn from.
Haskins so far on the season 16 TD throws and 1 int. That is absolutely incredible.
I've watched a good bit of all of the "top" QBs this year and none are nearly as talented passing the ball as Haskins is. That kid is something else, man.
Need to figure our the running game teams stacked the box v osu for years and were able to run the ball ..
Lb and secondary play still
Got to be a reason Hilliard and booker aren’t with the 1s. Instinctually they look to be a cut above the other lbs, but I know it’s a skewed view since they were playing essentially garbage time.
You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton
They seem to know what position to be in and how to tackle. How hard can it be for the #1's playing behind the best D line in the country?
Don't know why Hilliard isn't playing over Werner but I understand Booker not starting. Have you forgotten how bad he was against Iowa last year (or for most of the season for that matter)? Not sure how trustworthy he is as a starter again to be perfectly honest.
Haven’t forgot about booker...but players can’t improve from season to season? His replacements haven’t shown me anything more than he did/has. He was playing down hill today.
When Booker plays well against a good team then I'll say he's turned a corner. Tulane is not a good team. And Booker plays more like an extra DE than a LB anyways. He can't play coverage at all, that is definitely a fact.
Regardless of the opposition...the other LBs are playing the same teams also and booker showed more today than the others did. I do agree he’s bigger, and could offer some depth if needed at DE with Bosa out, especially on passing downs.
I agree but Burger, Werner and Borland have shown nothing in the actual games to be ahead of Hilliard and Booker. They would equally get torched by Iowa had they played last year. They straight up NEVER get off blocks and miss so many TFL
I hope you mean Browning and not Burger (who is no longer with the team anymore, I think you're a couple years behind pal). And Browning was good today. Much improved from previous weeks.
I agree .. maybe a media member will ask this Monday
JK, I’m scratching my head on that one too. Browning is coming though, and I’ve been hard on him so far.
31-38 passing attempts for 419 yards!? At this pace, Haskins is looking at 4,500-5,000 yard season..
The confidence he has is unreal. Most of the time he just flicks his wrist and delivers a dime.
Oh how I've missed watching a throw first qb!
Haskins was 21/24, even better percentage. Sick actually. Tater was 10/14.
New season record for passing yards is easily in reach. I would love to see a new standard set.
Those numbers are both Haskins and Martell. Haskins had 304 or close. Still a pretty smooth first half with 5 TD passes. Once we get in league play and he plays 3+ quarters, his numbers will skyrocket.
Just watching mow. Late first quarter. It would seem Ohio State played the second half to get to Happy Valley.
Or to the limit of the new redshirt play rule.
Yeah, 49-6 victory for State which could had a much larger margin of victory over Tulane. Yet the win seemed unsatisfying. As mentioned up thread, OSU's back seven and penalties continue to be an issue and the running game seems now appears to be an afterthought given Haskins Heisman-esque numbers. Given TCU's loss today, I do not how good the Buckeyes are or could be.
Too much time spent at the North Heidelberg rather than the classroom. SSD 68-72
This is a good team. There's no doubt about that. If they weren't there's no way the come out of the first three games without Meyer unscathed. There did appear to be a lot of guys checked out and on to PSU in the second half of this one though which is why they weren't nearly as productive. Also the backup offensive linemen struggled a bit. If Martell wasn't as mobile as he is they give up a lot more sacks than they did no question. This team has a lot of growing up to do on defense but they are a good team.
Bring on penn state! Let’s go!
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Haskins is so good it's ridiculous.
I would’ve liked to see more out of the second/third teams in the second half, but then again, I’m sounding like a spoiled fan. What a nice time to be a Buckeye.
