I disagree, Cleveland is not the entire state, and some of us still dislike Baker Mayfield. And I also hope that no Buckeye ever does something as classless as planting our flag in another team's stadium. The scoreboard reflects your victory, not any ridiculous antics after the clock reads 0:00.

Pretty sure he means it’s different than trying to symbolically establish dominance when the scoreboard already reflects your victory.   It’s like pregame trash talk, which is common, vs post game trash talk, which is uncommon, and seen as bad sportsmanship.

No, he's not. We paraded a "Basic Defense" sign around Oklahoma after our win there, which is 100% "post game trash talk." We certainly did not let the scoreboard alone reflect our dominance

Which was in response to their pregame trash talk.

You might've missed this part of the post...

It’s like pregame trash talk, which is common, vs post game trash talk, which is uncommon, and seen as bad sportsmanship.

Either our team had bad sportsmanship that day, or Baker was justified in his. Can't have it both ways by his definition

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

Triv, I'm not here to make the OP's point for him. My point is this - walking around with a fan's sign that responds to an opponent's pregame trash talk is NOT the same as running out to plant a flag on the field of your opponent - the same opponent that beat you on your own field the year before.

“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt

My response was directly related to that post about pre and post game trash talk, I agree they aren't the same.

What is very similar however was the original example given of OSU tearing down the UM banner, which the post I was responding to used his pre/post rationale to say wasn't the same.

Agreed, although it's still funny to me that Mayfield failed to plant the flag because he doesn't understand how artificial turf works.  He went 1-1 against Ohio State and got blown out in 2016 -- it's not like he dominated us.

HS
Bucksknowwhatitis's picture

See that's what I don't get either.. have we forgotten that we dominated that game in 2016.. and last year we lost by 15 we didn't play well at all but its always puzzled me why people assume baker owns Ohio.. the score is like if we would've hit the field goal at the end of the first half against TCU.. we would've won by 15. I wouldn't expect haskins or tate to grab a flag and plant it in jerrys world off a 15 point win. Granted we didn't lose to TCU the year before.

The Future is Bright at Ohio State

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

I get this take, honestly I do.

Every other fan of every other team is looking at Cleveland and shaking their head and trying to rationalize it as being "just one win, just one game," but I think I'm going to back off on my Browns fan/friends and let them have this one.

As long as nothing idiotic is done, and no one gets hurt, enjoying a momentous occasion is okay by me.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Agreed. I was much happier for Carlos Hyde in last night's game than Mayfield since he's one of our own (and he only scored all three of CLE's TDs AND had a baby not long before the game started, huge night for El Guapo). I'm a Bengals fan and the Browns fans definitely deserved that happiness after having to wait 636 fucking days for it. But I still highly dislike Mayfield and I think a lot of his success last night was because the Jets defense was utterly unprepared for him since he and Tyrod are so different. Once more game tape is out there on him and NFL defenses start to figure his game out that could change. I hope when we play them for the first time this year he gets a rather vicious Welcome to the NFL moment for his flag-planting antics from last year in the Shoe. But it is good to see two Ohio teams on top of the AFCN (for now at least).

HS
Jay Lawerence's Laugh's picture

Two things...

sorry that we are ecstatic to get a win (not really sorry at all). We know we aren’t the entire state. I could be a complete asshole and tell you how much I don’t care about events from other sports teams in the state...but I am from Cleveland and don’t need to do that. I’ll leave the classy reactions to the Sam Wyche guys.

Second, yeah Baker really had some douche moments in college. He often let his competitive nature get the best of him when he was able to flourish. The great news is, that the kid has grown and really seems to have matured. Do I like what he did at Ohio Stadium? No, but I also realize that I have never won a game against The Ohio State Buckeyes. I can only imagine the amount of energy one must feel as a young man. I could see how he let the moment get the best of him.

Anywho, can’t we just let Cleveland enjoy the day. We did lose fucking Lebron this summer... again...

To your point about film on Baker. I feel like you may be right. He seemed to make some very tough throws to the middle that I think film study may expose.

Ohio, the greatest state in the Union!

HS
Dstacify's picture

One big note. I was rooting for you guys last night. You deserved to win that game. I don't care for the Browns per se since they're a rival team but I have nothing against the city of Cleveland. It's a beautiful city and I'm also a Cavs fan so I felt the pain of LeBron leaving again as well (I think that goes for most of the state since the Cavs are the only NBA team in Ohio). I also sincerely hope the Indians finally break their World Series drought this year (and they look good enough to do it if they can keep their momentum rolling in the playoffs). I have no reason to be angry about the Browns winning last night. My team is shooting for a 3-0 record on Sunday and sole possession of first place in the division so we have our own shit to worry about. Congrats. No fan base should have to wait 636 days to win a fucking pro football game and it's a shame Hue has put you through that for so long.

Jay Lawerence's Laugh's picture

Thank you D, I can appreciate your response. I lived in the Cincy area for 3 years and I laughed a few times dealing with Reds fans wearing tOSU gear. My head was so confused, your hat says OSU (which means we should be on the same page), but your putting down my indians and Browns. Lol, it was a culture shock when I moved back from KC, Mo.

I am excited for the Tribe and a possible playoff run.

The Cavs will be in a struggle going forward.

Ohio, the greatest state in the Union!

HS
Dstacify's picture

I haven't updated my picture. I'm from southwest Ohio (Dayton area specifically) and southwest Ohio is Bengals/Reds country for the most part. So despite the fact that I feel for Browns fans we still view them as our in-state rivals. I actually have no animosity for the Indians though. A lot of Reds fans do for some reason but I'm not one of them. You guys don't even play in our division and we have much bigger rivalries with the Cardinals and Cubs who do play in our division. The only aspect to the Reds-Indians rivalry is that it's in-state and I will never understand why so many people in Ohio were cheering on the Cubs in the WS two years ago against you guys. I will never cheer for that team under any circumstance lol. Not to mention the Indians are good right now and the more fun Ohio baseball team to watch. The Reds are complete ass atm since they've been rebuilding for 3 going on 4 years now (I hate how lengthy MLB rebuilds tend to be due to the minor league system, I know the Tribe went through lengthy periods of rebuilding as well during the Mark Shapiro years before Francona showed up). So I do hope they come away with the title this year. Better you guys than the Yankees or Red Sox (again).

11 Strong.

HS
Jay Lawerence's Laugh's picture

I really wish we could compete, I feel like we are missing one more starter. Kluber is a great playoff pitcher the rest are more suited to be 3rd or 4th starter in the playoffs, IMO.

Bullpen will need to step it up and it seems like Miller has lost his edge a bit.

Offense is good, but I don’t feel like we are consistent through out.

I know I sound pessimistic, but I’ve seen the Indians have teams much better suited, that have gotten knocked out in early rounds.

Yankees scare me with the power aspect. It seems like HRs play such a big role in the playoffs.

Regardless, I’m excited to see how we do.

Ohio, the greatest state in the Union!

Regardless of what happens in the playoffs this year you guys need to make sure you keep Lindor around long-term after the season. He's an absolute stud and hands down the best shortstop you guys have had since Vizquel.

The biggest problem with Mayfield ATTEMPTING to plant a flag on an artificial turf (kinda dumb on its own) is that the year before, the Bucks whooped his ass on THEIR field. So, if you feel you own our field, then logic tells you we own your field.

Here's the difference - gathering your teammates, coaches and fans around you to celebrate a win is what should be expected - doing anything that brings most of the attention to yourself is where you cross the line into Doucheville.

“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt

HS
Dstacify's picture

He claimed before the game that he was salty about the OSU players singing Carmen, OH in their stadium after the 2016 game (which happens everywhere we go, it's simply an OSU tradition and there's nothing inherently disrespectful about it). So I would think the flag planting stunt was his way of getting "revenge" for that lol. The problem was he made it easy for Iowa State to use that against his Sooners weeks later when they got upset on their home field.

ALL IS FORGIVEN. Around this time last year, Baker Mayfield might have been the most hated man in the state of Ohio after his flag planting stunt.

Now, he's decidedly not.

Nah. I wasn't mad about it. I was unhappy with teams cheating on defense and saying we don't have to cover deep.

There goes the chance at taking Bosa first. Then again, Hue is still the coach and Taylor might still be the starter in his eyes.

HS

Then again, Hue is still the coach and Taylor might still be the starter in his eyes.

Wouldn't that be just like the Browns? Although as I watched the game I was saluting them for figuring out a way to get Taylor out of there without straight benching him. An injury was the perfect way to do that, so props for making the arrival of Baker look good without completely acing Taylor in the process.

Yeah, cause I’m sure Rick Pitno is the one who designed and launched that banner.

I was never mad at Baker for trying to stick a flag into artificial turf. He came out looking like the idiot by all accounts. And I disagree that I would want to see one of our young men do the same thing. That doesn’t show much class or self-management. Buckeyes are above that shit.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Agreed. His reasons for doing it were petty as shit as well because he was pissed off about the OSU players singing Carmen, OH in their stadium the previous year after their win. Carmen, OH is a tradition after every game for OSU, there's no inherent trash talk behind it whatsoever. And Iowa State humiliated him in the same manner later on in the season after their upset of OU which proves that what goes around comes around in this game. I think Mayfield is a talent no question but his attitude will absolutely put a target on his back in the League just like Cam Newton's has and just like Johnny Football did with the fucking money sign years ago.

Baker Mayfield's still an idiot, I role on the floor every time I see him get blasted by that cop! The stupid thing is that wall is what 3ft high? If he had just hopped the wall he may have been able to get away from those doughnut eaters! LOL

Not a Browns fan, but congratulations to all of you who have been waiting for that win! I wouldn't get ahead of myself with forgiving Baker just yet though. As y'all should know it's a long season!! Things can (and have in Cleveland at least 20 times) turn bad for a QB in a hurry!! Your Defense looks legit, Ward is the man. Hey Mugbucket, I can see where you are coming from, if it makes you feel better I wasn't actually trying to be derogatory towards police. I was merely pointing out how ignorant Baker was trying to run past them intead of just hopping the wall and running away. I don't condone running from the police but if you are going to it his attempt was just beyond stupid. And the doughnut eater comment was just me pointing out that most cops aren't the same kind of athletes as a D1 football player. Had he hopped the wall instead of trying to run right by them he may have been able to put distance between himself and the officers making it harder to be caught. Although they probably would have been smart enough that one would have pursued while the others used their cruisers to cut him off.

Either way, it was totally just meant to be humorous. Also, btw I am a retired Army veteran, tell your son thanks for his military service and his continued service as a police officer.

There's a difference between intelligence and common sense. Baker has at times displayed a huge lack of common sense. Planting a flag in field turf was one of those times. Running from the cops was another. Thinking grabbing at his crotch on live television is the perfect way to disrespect an already bad Kansas team is a third case. There's no question the kid is an immature punk at times but he clearly has elite knowledge of the game. His Wonderlic score doesn't surprise me at all. It also doesn't guarantee he'll be a great QB IMO.

Tulane may feel the wrath, but they run the option. Although they don't have the same caliber of athletes we do, our DEs outside of Bosa have not exactly been adept at stopping the run.

There was never anything wrong with Baker Mayfield's flag planting. In fact, it was extremely good and exactly what I would want a player on my team to do.

And that's exactly what's wrong with today's player/fan. Holy cow...

We made shirts of Marcus Hall double birding an entire stadium, which is without question a worse/more disrespectful act than planting a flag.

Every single Buckeye fan is kidding themselves if they think they wouldn't have loved it if a Buckeye did this after a huge win.

You're flat out wrong. I thought the Hall double bird was a classless move and I wouldn't wear that tee shirt if you gave it to me for free. Here's a tip, don't paint "every single" anything, Buckeye fan or otherwise, with the same brush, because 99.99 times out of 100 you'll be wrong.

Mike Vrabel got his first win as an NFL head coach on Sunday, even without his starting quarterback, top tight end and starting left tackle.

They weren’t just without their starting tackle, they were w/o their top 3 tackles. They started their 4th tackle and a guy from the practice squad and allowed exactly one sack. It was an amazing game plan that included a fake punt that went for a 66 yard TD pass by their all-pro safety as well as utilization of the wildcat.

It was, unquestionably one helluva game plan and an exceptionally well coached game.

Setting aside the question of what’s classy or not . . . I would argue that in general football players, themselves, will tend see something like Mayfield’s flag planting as much more of a violation of the unwiritten code, so to speak, than they would Hall’s double bird after being kicked out of the game. With flag planting, e..g, the opposing players will probably want to fight to restore their honor, etc.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

As opposed to having fought an opponent to defend a teammate--and by extension, their team's honor--and been ejected for it and then flashing the bird to the hostile crowd?

You're splitting hairs. No one's talking about what the players think. You think Denzel Ward carries any kind of a grudge against his new teammate? This is about the fans and, much as I loved it as a Buckeye fan, Hall's gesture was an obscenity. You can't say that about what Mayfield did. In November 2017, he was seen grabbing his crotch and mouthing "Fuck you!" at Kansas's coach. Had he done that in the Shoe instead of planting an OU flag, would you have been OK with it? I doubt it. And yet Hall is seen as a hero in many Buckeye fans' eyes.

I stand by my statement: Mayfield's act was deemed "classless" because it was done to us, not by one of us. Anyone who thinks Hall's gesture was acceptable but Mayfield's was not is a hypocrite. Neither act was appropriate but you can't say one was less appropriate than the other.

It’s almost always a bad idea to speak for other people, especially ALL other people.

But if you’re going to try to speak for everyone, at least be logical in process. For example, even if - let’s say, for sake of argument - that 75 percent of Ohio State fans would love it if a Buckeyes player planted a flag at midfield of an enemy stadium, why assume that the same percentage of fans would love it if said “planting” was attempted on artificial turf and thus was more of a flag bouncing than a flag planting?

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the flag planting, but don’t try to justify it by saying “well, Ohio State played their fight song at OU the year before.” 1. They sing Carmen Ohio in front of the fans, every single game, no matter what. 2. Just admit you’re a bit of a dickhead with a thirst for competition. The best players tend to be that way.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS

As far as flag plantings, I did like the time that Ohio boy planted one on the moon. As for Mayfield, it wasn’t technically a planting, and it did seem like a dick move given his personality.

HS
Buckeye Chuck's picture

I didn't like Mayfield's flag planting, but I also think that the anger over it provided a safe way for Buckeye fans to vent about the game without having to criticize a defense that allowed a backup fullback to go for over 100 yards in receiving.

Anyway, he's in the NFL now and playing for my team, so the slate is completely clean as far as I'm concerned. I don't hold it against Chase Young that he went to a high school that's a rival of my old high school, so why would I hate Mayfield forever because he once had a big game against the Buckeyes?

Yep.  As long as Mayfield truly does embrace the grind, the work ethic, the blue-collar heritage of the Browns, I’m all for him.  Manziel, in his short stay in Cleveland, never grew beyond his bad habits and college persona much.  I liked what I heard from Mayfield post-game last night, that he is there to work his butt off and keep getting better.  The chip he seems to play with on his shoulder, it suits Cleveland.

I know it all worked out, but I’m really surprised that Carlos decided to play a football game while his wife was in labor. He could have missed the birth of his first child for a game of football? I guess everyone has their own priorities... I’m happy he didn’t miss it, according to the story, but I wouldn’t have taken that chance.

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

He could have missed the birth of his first child for a game of football?

But it’s not like he was out playing a game of pickup football with a bunch dudes in the park. It’s his job. Hyde wouldn’t be the first man to miss the birth of his child because his job demanded he be away. Believe me. I’m happy for him it wasn’t an away game, and he was able to squeeze it all in.

I’m not pursuing an arguement here - and I know he isn’t the first - far from it. But I would take the day off for the birth of my child. Actually, I’ve taken at least a week off after each of my children were born, and was there for every one. Most people used to think of a child’s birth as a special moment, an event that you would never miss unless it couldn’t be avoided. It is the  one of the only things in life that is truly “once in a lifetime.”  It feels so strange that skipping the birth of one’s first child for any reason (game, work, or whatever) is just... kinda... fine.  But, like I said above, it is a reflection of shifting values in American society as a whole, and while not unique to Carlos, it is sad.  And how ironic that he would be willing to miss the birth, and yet still have the requisite pride to name the child after himself. Seems like that kid is going to have to earn his dad’s respect from behind the 8-ball, even if that isn’t a conscious decision.

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

Most of the fathers I know who missed a child’s birth hated the fact they missed it. But when you’re deployed half away around the world doing the nation’s business, you don’t get much choice in the matter. When a ship pulls into homeport from a deployment though, we let all the new fathers walk down the brow first to go meet those new babies.

It sounds to me that Mr. Hyde stayed with his bride all the way up until game time, and returned immediately afterward. He made a choice. Doesn’t make him a bad person.

I agree with Kevin.  If a Buckeye got swept up in the moment at AA or Happy Valley and did something like what Mayfield did, I’d be loving it.  Here’s the thing - if you smile as I do when you see Marcus Hall giving that double salute, you ought to be able to at least respect and understand what Mayfield did last year.

DEs have a week to get nasty before going to PSU.  Even though he seemed to disappear for some reason at TCU, I think Young is ready for this challenge.  And Cooper has had plenty of snaps, too.  The thing to keep in mind is not only that a lot will be asked of the guys filling in at DE, but the margin for error for our LB unit just shrunk, too.  At DE position, it’s “next man up.”  But for those lined up behind that front four, more is also required.
