Urban who? Just kidding, but Ryan Day, fabulous job and class, class, class. But not only Ryan Day, I mean look at this staff Urban has put together.

We're really lucky to have Coach Day.  I hope we can keep him for awhile.

Probably won’t. But you’d have to wonder if any thought at all would be put into keeping him on the sidelines. He wouldn’t be the only OC to be on the sidelines (remember Kiffin). He just seems to click so well with his guys on offense. Love his demeanor.

Now I can answer the question. do I want Day to be the coach in waiting? Yes I do.

HS
JTFor President2016's picture

I have a feeling he’s gonna be offered upwards of 5, but not from OSU. I’d love to see OSU open the checkbook as a coach in waiting. Although the last “coach in waiting” I remember, was Muschamp at Texas.... Yikes

Oh yeah, he's definitely not sticking with OSU next season unless Urban decides to hang it up.

James Franklin was coach in waiting at Maryland. But I believe the new AD that came in hated Friedgen (who handpicked Franklin) and rescinded the designation. Bet they like a mulligan.

I thought Bowden was the last coach that had a successful coach in waiting setup.  Except that it wasnt successful for Bobby because he wanted to keep coaching and FSU didnt want him around anymore.

Coach Day brought it the last three weeks. He owned his role and crushed it.

Having Urban back will be great, but I'm ACTUALLY cautiously optimistic about it. I want to see how we play Tulane and if our offense hums like it has this season, great. If not, I want to know if Urban's offense just hasn't evolved well with modern day football.

I've been so happy with Coach Day and have had ZERO worry about our offense since he's been at the helm. I want that to continue with Urban back. I've been tired with the constant doubt about our team the last three years.

To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.

HS
JTFor President2016's picture

This team has a direction on offense. The issue with 2015 seemed to be no one on the staff had any clue on what to do without a runner. Also Cardale was not nearly as polished as Haskins. The man who still can’t be overlooked is Wilson. Dude lit it up at OU with the air raid. This staff seems much more prepared for this offensive style.

I believe Urban will give them more leash. Honestly last year, Day and Wilson probably couldn’t do what they wanted do to certain limitations.

Elliott dots the eye, on this national championship win.

HS
IBLEEDSCARLETANDGRAY's picture

I dont think Urban is going to mess with the offense and start running Haskins on 15 keepers a game. Urban only did that BECAUSE JT wasnt the greatest passer in the world. I think Urban will leave the offense alone. People forget he signs off on everything, even when hes been suspended. Its still his team.

Good job by Day, both as OC and HC, with great support form Schiano, Wilson and rest of the OSU staff.

I would point out, to those who want Day to replace Urban, that Schiano, Wilson and others won't automatically stay if Day replaces UFM, which is unlikely IMO. It's Urban's whole staff that makes OSU football perform at such a high level, and that includes Mickey Marotti, Mark Pantoni and a bunch of others—including the Real Life Wednesday people. There is no guarantee these folks stay if/when Urban departs.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

I feel it's more likely he will go get experience as a head coach, and we will get him back when Urban is done putting up with Drake.

Gary Patterson is one of the top 5 or 7 coaches in the game and has been looking to get back at Ohio State since 2014 and his gameplan was on point. I think a lot of folks are underestimating how big of a win and how impressive it was for us to win this game with Ryan Day in place of Urban Freaking Meyer. Absolutely I want Ryan Day at the helm when Urban hangs it up. Only one of three games was difficult but it was a massive game and he earned our undying respect. Thank you, Coach Day.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

If you read/believed the comments section around here this week, the final outcome of tonight's game would be disappointing. I saw a lot of score predictions similar to 55-14. It was never going to be that lopsided, and Day helped prevent it from being a tragic upset.

Ole Buckeye's picture

this absolutely was a huge win.  Not only the CFP "issue", but also Gordon Gee's "Sisters of the Sick Poor" comment was directed at TCU.

Plus TCU was disrespected a little being 13 point dogs "at home".

so they really had the incentive tonight.

and they had the momentum - a couple of times!

What a game to watch.  I stood (in my man cave) for the entire second half.

gotta wind down and get some sleep.!!

HS
JTFor President2016's picture

I along with several others greatly misjudged their D-line and QB. I thought our O-line would be getting us 6 yards a pop all night. We eventually wore them out but it wasn’t easy.

Some of the passes that QB threw were great.

At the end of the day, Gary Patterson made a case for coach of the year based just off the first half last night. OSU adjusted. But they were doing every single thing to use our strengths against us.

Well done Coach Day, well done.     Best of all he did it with class.

HS
brutus0717's picture

He was thrust into a pretty tough situation, having to live up to Urban's standards and guiding the powerhouse that is Ohio State Football. Obviously I can't say that no one else could have done as well as he did, but he handled himself, and the situation, with grace and class. I'd be fine with a "coach in waiting" scenario with Ryan Day.

We got the money. Tell Day he gets whatever Venables gets plus an additional 20%. So very impressed with Day throughout all this. I know he will probably go on to bigger things, but I wish we could convince him to stay and take over after Urban leaves.

Congrats to Coach Day: well done.

I have to point out something:

40 points and 526 yards against an athletic TCU defense make it clear this is one of the best offenses in the land.

The Buckeye offense only provided 27 points (the Defense provided 13); so basically a draw with TCU. All phases of this OSU need to get better, some of them a LOT better. Keep improving, Buckeyes, or some B1G team will steal your lunch.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

HS
Chris Lauderback's picture

That's a great callout. I got ahead of myself in my haste, tbh. The 526 yards is still impressive but you're obviously right about the points.

milhouse4588's picture

This is very true.

But we also left a lot of points on the field. Literally. The drops tonight killed us. We fix that and Haskins hits Victor in stride and suddenly the offense has 14 more points and it's a blowout. Our offense moved at will until a key pay here or there shot ourselves in the foot. Small things that need a little tweak and this offense won't be stopped. We can attack any defense at any point with Haskins at QB so you can't focus on stopping just one element.

To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.

HS
buckz4evr's picture

You and everybody else is correct in what they are saying about the offense, but let's not forget OSU took a couple of knees to end the game. Their defense was totally gassed and emotionally defeated long before that final knee. Fast is great, but fast and big is dominate.

When you hear coach Day speak after the game, he truly seems amazed and loves the Buckeyes culture and fans. He mentioned multiple times today how well our fans showed up all the way down in Texas. It’s good to see that and no matter what his future holds, he should always be a buckeye and welcomed!

Thanks coach Day!

Welcome back coach Meyer!

I have thought about this ALOT, since the two cowards in charge of the athletic department failed to find their sack during the aftermath of the Smith fiasco.

I found this repulsive and it's my humble opinion, Urbs walks after this season!

He, again in my opinion, has enough money and hardware to say FO at the end of the season. I know I would after how he got hung by our supposed leaders of this great institution. Way to go in showing our students and alumni , not to mention the athletes and coaching staff, how things will go if things get tough in the trenches. Sarcasm media. Yes you Mcfugly!

How do we tell future staff, if your right and do the right thing we have your back with a straight face?

That being said, I love The Urb and his commitment to tOSU!

Dont mean anything bad directed to anyone except the two great leaders mentioned above.

Great game guys!

I just hope we haven't damaged our brand beyond short term repair as far as coaching goes.

We have several Head Coaches in waiting on staff already and just hope and pray we can manage to keep more than a few next season.

Coach Day, you did an awesome job, THANKYOU from Buckeye Nation!

I love what Coach Day has done. Can't argue with his results with all of training camp, then owning 3 games. Slow clap.

I just don't want to see him be the next Chris Ash. Being a head coach is not just guiding the program, it's also beating other teams in recruiting, kissing babies, etc.

Not just Ryan Day (though he's the figurehead) but Greg Schiano, Kevin Wilson, Mickey Marotti, and the rest of the assistants deserve a ton of credit as well (and Day gave them a ton of credit too in his post-game presser, especially Schiano). Not to mention Brian Hartline. The passing game improvements are clearly due to Dwayne no doubt but the WRs have played out of their minds this season under him (aside from Mack who was clearly battling mental struggles last night). He needs to be promoted from interim ASAP, he's earned it in my book.

As for Day he's no doubt going to be a hot commodity HC candidate after this season but I really hope he plans on sticking around a little while longer (and he does seem to be very attached to OSU). If he does take another HC job though he absolutely deserves it and he's going to get his looks after out-coaching someone as respected as Gary Patterson in his first national stage game. Salute to Coach Day, you have been a blessing for this team.

11 Strong.

I agree about Hartline but he has a box to check off first and that's recruiting and can he ? These kids from St. Louis will be a test in keeping them both.

One of my favorite things about being a Buckeye - coaches who work in our program, coaches that are new to the game and coaches that have excelled at every level of the sport, they appreciate their time in C-bus as something unique and exceptional.  Day has been around some great staffs, as has Larry Johnson, and Schiano, and Wilson, and Alford.  But these guys see something truly remarkable at OSU, something that other places don’t quite equal.  And before them, I venture to say that guys like Herman, and Warriner, and Dantonio, and others knew it, too.

"Woody would have wanted it that way"

I said after week one that I would love for Day to stay and replace Urban when the time comes. How ever like it was touched on above it's much easier to drive a Rolls Royce but can you build one is the question. That entire crew won't be here even after this season I see a couple coach's gone. I do see him as a great recruiter and the kids seem to love the guy. I think he truly loves OSU too. For conversation only I wonder after all that has gone down will Urban return? He might of said enough of this crap I don't need it. His kids are all pretty much grown up and starting to have families this could be the end??

Denny

HS
buckz4evr's picture

I think we need to put the brakes on the Day Train. Everybody loves the backup quarterback. Like Day has continually said, this is Meyers team and he has built a fundamentally sound culture around here. That's very hard to replicate. You just don't jump into those shoes and expect them to be a perfect fit. I think Day stays. He just signed a three year contract and he seems like a man of his word so I don't think he did that unless he felt like there was a lot left for him to learn. He is only 39 so time is on his side.
I think with the staff Urban has assembled, he can take a step back and get his mental state back to where it was. That will be crucial to his state of mind going forward. JMHO.
