Went with friends to Austin, Texas and Oklahoma. Both were the best I have ever been to. Go to Oklahoma. Stay in OKC. Lots to do and great people and city. Drive 30 minutes to campus gameday and have a blast. Go to Oklahoma tailgait run by a guy named John. Big inflatable helmet near student union. He will take great care of you and lots of awesome places to eat.
Damn right I'm a Buckeye
Thanks! Oklahoma is not one that I had thought about much, but that's a good suggestions. Helpful to know that its works to stay in OK City since we will all be flying in most likely. Appreciate the suggestion!
Oklahoma was one that shocked me when OSU played there. The friendliest fans and willing to bring you into their tailgate even if you wear the opposing fans colors. They did warn us that you want to go when they play a big game because it gets awesome.
In 2015 when we opened the season at VT, I was awestruck on how friendly all of them were. my brothers and my dad ended up at 3 random tailgates over the course of 5 hours by just them inviting us in and giving free beer. Even the students were friendly and nice.
THIS! The people were great the food was even better!
Nebraska, 100 times over. I went in 2011 when OSU played there and it was a blast. Their fans are a class act, Lincoln is a fun city, and they bleed college football just as much if not more so than we do in Columbus. It was no problem for me to attend an NU tailgate in my OSU gear.
This is so true, they have definitely exhausted the use of all things Cornhusker in Lincoln...very passionate, and extremely friendly people.
Buckeye til I die
Without a doubt Nebraska! great city, food, bars, atmosphere, and truer words were never spoken, when the Beach Boys sang " the mid-west farmer's daughters really make you feel alright."
Thanks for the info on NU guys, very helpful to get confirmation that its a great atmosphere.
Louie, from an outsider standpoint, what did you think of NC State? I live in the area and, though I have not attended a game yet, am considering it (once we're done with hurricanes and such.) Many locals go JUST for the tailgate - they don't bother going into the stadium.
**This space to be filled with an inspirational quote from a famous Buckeye**
NC State tailgate was great. One of the guys in the group went to NCST, so he had some connections that we used and he set everything up. We went to the Clemson game, which was a close loss, but that did not dampen the mood after. It was packed and we had a spot next to a Clemson group and there were no issues, everyone was friendly and food was great. Would recommend.
stayed with a buddies uncle in Norman. He was dropping us off on gameday and we asked him to stop so we could buy beer. He said “you wont need it, your wearing ohio state shirts, everyone will welcome you to Norman and give you beer”. First tailgate we walked past : “Heyyyy. Welcome to Oklahoma, you want a beer?”. And it continued that way for the whole day.
Iowa had a great tailgate, although I knew people there so im not sure how it would be for a couple complete strangers.
My buddies and I do the same kind of trip every year, this year we are going to Miami at Va Tech.
Edit: WVU is on our list, how was that? (My group of friends includes an Oklahoma, Va Tech, Miami, WVU, and Notre Dame fans, so we will be doing sll of those schools before branching out into random games
WVU was the bet one so far. We went to the game where unranked WVU upset #4 Baylor and the entire experience was insane. Definitely the best actual game we have been too and everything with the tailgate was awesome. The one thing is that it can be tough to find a place to stay in Morgantown on game day, so you really have to plan ahead.
A few years ago I was traveking in the south and go to go to a night game at LSU. They were playing Ole Miss when Ole Miss was number 1 in the country. What they say about Death Valley is true. One goes to a big Sat night game at LSU and is not the same person afterwards. The atmosphere is that great. Every college football fan should experience it at least once.
Anyway the fane were incredible. That morning at the hotel people told us just to walk up to a random tail gate, prople would shove a plate in your hands and point you to the food. Southern hospitality at its best.
I have been to more than a few LSU tailgates. Excellent food and Southern hospitality. Where else can you hang out with the governor's parents? A few years ago LSU fans were rated as one of the worst. Younger crowd that can be aggressive.
The guy we tailgated with had the second spot from the stadium. Mega bus. He did not go to LSU, he was an electrical contractor. One week some guy showed up with a wagon. Made gumbo for everyone. As you can imagine it starts on Friday and since they like to play night games it goes in Sunday AM. It has been a few years, need to get back there.
Every time they show Ole Miss, it looks good.
Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.
Fun story about Austin and UT--was in the band when we played at Texas. After the game, we were really thirsty and had to hang around for a bit to go to the airport. Friend and I went trolling through the tailgating lots in our uniforms to find some OSU fans that maybe had some bottled water.
The number of UT fans, after we beat them, that offered us a beer was astounding (we aren't allowed to drink in uniform). Eventually, we found an OSU fan that knew a UT fan and the UT fan gave us an entire case of water. It was awesome.
I’d like to check out Clemson, SC or UGA.
Early season Sailgaiting is pretty amazing at Washington...
"Sarcastically, I'm in charge."
My favorites have been UGA, Clemson, Arizona and Washington. Cal was lame although the campus is beautiful. Northwestern is pretty lame also, but still one of my favs as I used to live there and several of my buddies that are hardcore Bears fans bring everything that is needed for a professional tailgate experience. They don't care for college football, but they are always looking for a reason to tailgate.
Georgia Tech is pretty lame also.
I thought Arizona was kind of lame, there was virtually no tailgate at all. After the game the bars were pretty wild though
