I really hope Coach Day grinds the TCU defense to dust with our O line and stable of stud RBs. That will ultimately open up the passing game for Dwayne to take deep shots with 1 on 1 coverage. Whoa nelly!!!

I know it is the reality, but I still selfishly hate that we have to accept the possibility that Haskins has one year of an audition for the NFL and that could be it.
I apologize for thinking too far ahead, but that's just me. Of course, I will enjoy each game this year, but will always lament that aspect of CFB.

Always want to see these kids succeed, but I feel ya. Especially with the DBs we’ve put in the league over the past few years.

HS
Extramedium's picture

NFL level DBs are easier to replace than NFL level QBs though.

HS
UGotBBQBackThere's picture

Can’t argue with that. And we do seem to replace them. I’d still love be to see a secondary consisting of Hooker, Lattimore, and Ward (haven’t crunched the eligibility scenario so forgive me if not possible). Something along those lines. Haskins -the way he’s playing now- is a once in a generation QB and it stings even more.

HS
TigerSweat's picture

Yes sir.

Dwayne is a generational talent at QB and I'm trying to enjoy every last second of it... Its a damn shame that things didn't work out to where he could have played earlier. It is what it is. Dwayne is going to finally give OSU that top tier starting NFL QB that we've been lacking for my entire lifetime.

Yes, but you don’t need NFL level QB’s to win a title.  Just ask Bama.  It sure helps though.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

No you don't but when a roster as loaded as OSU gets an elite passer... Watch the fuck out!

We win by double digits. Enough said

Why the hell do I have to keep seeing Wint give up big plays?  Is our defensive coaches fucking blind???

I think that Gary Patterson is as good a coach as any in college football. He does more with less every single year than the other big names that compete at a major level. Super cerebral defensive mind that adjusts his scheme based on his opponent much in the same way Belichick does.

That said, I think he knows if they can’t stop the run against us it’s lights out. If we establish Weber and Dobbins early, we will have access to the full playbook all night and that doesn’t end well for TCU. I think until Haskins proves that he can consistent beat you through the air on the big stage, teams will still first try to stop our run game because that’s a 100% known commodity. I look for Haskins to air it out early to loosen up the defense and set up the running game. Second half I think we start running straight downhill on their undersized line and pull away. I have us 42-24 Saturday night in a game where Dwayne dazzles. Just one fan’s opinion.

Spend your days doing what you love.

HS

Nice analysis, I hope you're right and we come out ready to blow the roof off the d.

HS
Buck68's picture

DFW B14:

IF Coach Patterson is as advertised; and,

IF we fool him on one play, we 'can't' do it twice b/c he's so accurate and swift in his adaptations; then,

"Find, seize, and exploit" become 3 essential elements of our INITIATIVEs vs TCU.

IOW, the linear concept of 'establishing', with its insinuation of 'once i get it, i have it' is the antithesis of an effective strategy or tactic except at the extreme end, i.e. 1 rep of 'the same'....

And Deception, is the key Force Multiplier.  I.E. on D... create 'unexpected' by the same pre-snap 'look'... but different moves, schemes, executioin....

GO BUCKS!

Love the take on the game plan, but I think that your initial analysis of TCU is about 10 years late. I read the article on ESPN (who I will admit sucks), but the quote from a Big 12 source said "I looked at Texas' roster and only saw a handful of guys that would even get playing time at TCU". They are out recruiting a lot more blue bloods than you think for talent.

HS
TXNut2488's picture

Didn't Haskins go 8-9 against TTUN as a backup on the road? Does a stage get bigger than that?

This whole "Haskins needs to prove himself" argument is nuts to me. The kid is amazing, knows he's amazing, and has amazing talent around him. If not for the dumb love affair Urban had for JT, we would have made the playoffs last year with Haskins. It sucks that just like Malik Hooker, Haskins will only be a starter for one year before he bolts to become the next 1st round pick.

I'm convinced by what I've seen of both Haskins and Bosa that they will be ready to play and stone cold killers Saturday night. If I'm concerned at all, it's for some of the other, younger guys who play with great intensity and may find themselves getting sucked out of position trying to make the big plays, esp on defense. TCU is a team that requires defensive discipline in order to have success. The Buckeyes showed improvement, but this will be prime time, and no time to show your individual skills. If the Silver Bullets play great TEAM defense, we will win big, because they aren't going to be able to stop our offense. No one will unless they can get to Haskins in 2.5 seconds or less with some consistency, and I don't see that as possible until the playoffs.

chess match.

e.g. IF TCU is unable to get to / pressure Haskins in 2.5 sec... what options are available to reassert relative advantage?

same question... adaptations throughout the game.

Saw the entire interview with Haskins on another site. Really liked the way he answered questions. Had a couple questions that were tough to answer like asking him to reflect on whether he could have been this effective last year. Which is tough to answer because if says absolutely, then the narrative might be that he was bashing the coaching staff/JT and obviously he's not going to say no, as he's confident in himself.

But he said all the right things and side stepped the tough questions with excellence that Coach Tress would be proud of.

HS
TigerSweat's picture

He did well dealing with those questions. I think most people realize that he could have been an effective QB for OSU last year too (how many times did we see different guys tweeting about Simba last year when JT struggled). I don't think there's any question that haksins would have been a stud QB last year but it didn't work out. We have him now and I think he's going to make the absolute best of it

"“I just think (this year’s team) resembles that team in 2014 a lot,” Bosa said"

I think so far at this point, that 2014 team had the better defense, especially the LB's and secondary.

One of the factors TCU needs to benefit from to win is having an Ohio State football team overlooking them and thinking they can just show up and win. From everything I just read, the Buckeyes are not overlooking TCU and they understand the importance of beating TCU.

I also wouldn't be surprised to find out that the Coaching staff has been preparing the Game Plan to beat TCU since January. The Offensive Coaches have had month's to study Gary Patterson's 4-2-5 defense in order to prepare an assault and decimate it.

Go Buckeyes

HS
Trebor40's picture

To your point, it is the defense we faced at the end of last season. USC ran a 4-2-5 very well against us yet our staff was able to see what did not work with very similar athletes. I honestly believe the staff is and has been watching and showing film from that game as well as TCU games to emphasize what our guys can and cannot do!

I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk

“We haven’t had a big game yet. We haven’t really had a true test yet,” Bosa said.

Gotta watch out there Bosa... Gonna give Rutgers and Oregon State some bulletin board material... /s.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
Ohio Guy in Jersey's picture

The next two road games will tell us just how good Dwayne Haskins is. With all due respect to Oregon State and Rutgers, they could not stress Haskins the way TCU and PSU can. Everything I’ve seen tells me he can handle it. But no one knows.

Yes, he performed well in The Game. But our rival had no film of consequence and they really didn’t know his skill set. Patterson is a great defensive coach. He will explore and expose flaws. This is a good thing. That’s how Haskins will get better.

But I’m remembering Meyer’s words from 2014: the quarterback is a product of this around him. Haskins needs the line to protect him, receivers to catch catchable passes, and RBs to hit the right holes and pick up blitzers (because those guys are coming). I’m really looking forward to Dwayne Haskins passing this test because I think he could be great.

HS
Cptnvideo's picture

"Yes, he performed well in The Game. But our rival had no film of consequence and they really didn’t know his skill set. "

Plus, TSUN's game plan was to stop JT. With Haskins' different skill set, that required an adjustment that they just didn't make.

My favorite team? Whoever is playing TTUN.
