Former Ohio State Linebacker Pledge Kane Patterson Commits To Clemson

I am RAPIDLY losing faith in Billy Davis as LB Coach!!  Tim Beck cost us a national championship in 2015 and 2016 and one could argue that the poor LB play cost us another one in Iowa last year.  There is way too much talent in Columbus for it to be squandered year after year by bad coaching hires!!!

HS

HS
Buckifan4Life's picture

Yes, the LB play has been a bit concerning lately. Last year, Harrison seemed a bit lost out there and now Werner appears to be struggling. Of course, this was the first game this season and Fuller was out, which had something to do with those two long rushing strikes from Ore State. Wint and Pryor took some really bad angles and didn't support the run like Fuller would have. I think they'll get it fixed before TCU.

HS
BofKGB's picture

Barron Browning was a little lost too.  I keep hoping their play gets better, but i did the same thing with the QBs under Beck too.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Didn't Werner make the hit in the end zone that resulted on Bosa's recovery for a touchdown?

HS
Silver Sniper's picture

Yes and he had like 10 tackles. If anything it was Browning that didn’t play well.

HS
Grisle's picture

He had a good game but how about taking 5 seconds to actually check his stats for the game. 5 total tackles 4 solo 1 sack 1tfl.

HS
Silver Sniper's picture

Grisle, how about taking a moment to recall the forced fumble that led to a touchdown? See, I can do that too! The whole point is he had a strong game. I thought I recalled that stat, but I was primarily disputing that Werner had a bad game as mentioned above.

HS
Spider1944's picture

Iowa Buck: I believe it was Dre’Mont who got there 1st. Werner punched it out and Bosa recovered it for a TD. And for Dre’Mont well he almost had his 3rd sack and credit for a safety. C’est la vie.

Go Bucks!!

DUDE.....you’ve been saying this exact same thing ever since news broke that he reopened his commitment. Give it a rest! It’s clear you REALLY loved this particular kid for some reason. There will be another LB that takes his place.

And before you retort with your typical “Who?” line, I don’t have a name for you right now. I just can’t remember being disappointed with a LB that we brought in in recent memory. We ALWAYS find someone...

HS
Bucks19's picture

It’s a legitimate question. Who’s next? Nobody has an answer. There’s only one LB left we were recruiting that’s uncommitted. ONE.

You don’t just you walk into a HS of a 4-5  Star recruit and say “we are Ohio State  and we want to offer you a scholarship and want you to commit “.

So you are 100%! Happy with all of our LB’s? Really? Not one has disappointed and lived up to Ohio State LB expectations?

HS
BuckBornandBred's picture

I think this group of coaches can absolutely do that and flip a 4 Star LB recruit if LB were higher on their list. I also believe they could take any of the handful of 3 Star Ohio LBs and coach them up to the level of this guy, possibly beyond.

HS
ScarletGray43157's picture

Good point on the Star Ratings.

They are very subjective and do not necessarily translate to success on the field.

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

HS

You don’t just you walk into a HS of a 4-5  Star recruit and say “we are Ohio State  and we want to offer you a scholarship and want you to commit “.

Yes you do.  It’s what Clemson just did with this kid, and it’s what we’ve done with other kids.

HS
Bucks19's picture

Wrong!!! They were already recruiting him. Had built a relationship in addition to already having a relationship with his dad. Bad example.

Buckborn - so you’d rather have a 3 star (there’s a reason they are 3 star without an OSU offer) and coach them up vs a 4 star and coach them up?

scarlet - there’s absolutely a correlation in the success of 3 star vs 4 and 5 stars.

HS
Bucknut87's picture

I present to you Malik Hooker as Exhibit A for a 3* being better than 4* or 5* players.  There are countless examples.  Give me a 3* with no entitlement issues and willing to prove themselves over a 4* that thinks he's MADE it any day.

That said, I'm willing to bet all of my helmet stickers that we sign at least another 4* to take Patterson's place.

HS

He needed a convenient reason (aka excuse) to decommit, and this came along at an opportune time. If he truly wanted to be a Buckeye, then something like what happened shouldn't have been enough to dissuade him, but that's okay--we want players who WANT to play for Urban Meyer and OSU. Yeah, sometimes you'll write something brilliant and important, only to see that comment pushed "off screen" into virtual oblivion by 50 or 100 new comments. C'est la vie! If we all kept "refreshing" (= re-posting) our previous comments at the bottom of each thread, in a vain effort to "get them noticed," can you imagine the vicious cycle that would create? Disagree-the players are responsible for A-paying attention, and B-performing based on the coaching they received. Once Jerome Baker realized this, he had a nuice couple of games against Wisky and USC last year. The play of the Ss and various DL screwups on Saturday contributed as much, if not more to Oregon State scoring 31 points as the LB corp did.

HS

He may be. He has only been there a year and I would not say our linebackers are an atrocity. It is the beginning of year 2, so it is early in his tenure. He also spent the last 25 years in the NFL, so surely Urban knew that he wouldn't be the best recruiter on the team right away.

Bears...Buckeyes... Battlestar Galactica.

HS
BofKGB's picture

I think Urbz hired him because he was trying to help out a good friend who recently found himself out of a job when Chip Kelly got fired from the Philadelphia Eagles.  But that is just my theory.  One thing Saban definately has over Myer is hsi ability to hire good assistant coaches.  Beck and Smith have been proven disasters.  I hope Billy Davis can break this trend...

HS
Madbuckeye's picture

I know you're upset, but Urban has hired one or two good assistant coaches. Larry Johnson comes to mind, maybe someone else could think of another. Maybe his assistant coaches are mostly good hires and if something were to happen like Urban being unable to coach for a couple weeks we'd be ok.

I agree and we are dealing with kids (lord knows how many times my kids did not articulate the real reason for their decisions and those decisions could change 3 times in the span of two minutes).  But try to be honest with your answer.  If Meyer's situation was only a little bit of why you decommited what was the rest or the main reason?  If it was to be closer to home you could say that but better check Google Maps first, driving wise it is 7 minutes closer.  If you are flying it is a lot easier and faster to get to Columbus

He's politely referencing the main reason (Urban's situation) by referencing it as a partial factor. But let's be real, if you were a Christian values based kid/family amd one of the primary selling points of the Ohio State program is values and integrity, it is not a good look to see all the things that Urban condoned from Zach Smith. It makes them look hypocritical.

It sucks to say it, but that's the situation.

This isnt new or surprising other than knowing that we recruit the same types of players as Clemson and have been for a while.

I know we wanted him but sad that I am reading back-handed farewells.

We don't know the kid, so good luck is all that needs to be said.

I agree.  It is the kids choice.  The person mainly to blame here would be Billy Davis, our LB coach, who could not seal the the deal.  Why would you expect an NFL guy to be a good recruiter anyhow?

I think this is actually Urban posting so he can get some negative comments about this Davis coach. Urbs will say look Bill, the coaches on 11w want you shitcanned cause you can’t coach or recruit. I also heard you had some harsh words withyour wife and your had a speeding ticket in 1993. You gone. Pack up and get the hell out.

There’s not enough hours in the day for us to be high school talent scouts for all the positions on the field, but I remember when we didn’t have a QB for 2019 and it was the end of the world for about a minute.

I have no doubt there is someone as good as or better than Kane Patterson. Especially since his decommitment announcement was the first time I’d heard of him, that I recall. Again I’m not an expert but I think if he was singular, irreplaceable talent, his actual commitment would have been a bigger deal.

Any doubt Dabo has been turned up the negative recruiting against OSU to 11 since this Urban Meyer debacle? He was saying Meyer wasn't going to coach much longer over a year ago. If my son was a recruit and a coach tried to throw shade on another coach rather than sell us on their program, I'd be taking my kid somewhere else, and I'd make sure I let him know why.

Yes, I do. People banged on Stud for a whole year too, and I think that's turned out alright. Patterson didn't commit to Clemson because of Bill Davis. And the LBs actually looked pretty good Saturday, it was the safeties that need coaching, and to get Fuller back.

Interesting comment, Ohiowhitesnake!

I don't know if I lack faith in Billy Davis, but I am on the fence. For one thing, a lot more than LB play went wrong against Iowa last season. Against Oklahoma, which had one of the best OL in the nation last year, our vaunted DL was pretty well neutralized, too.

We certainly need to see improvement from the LB corps this season, but keep in mind that lots of fans were ready to throw Studrawa aside after his first season in C-bus . . .

If I recall it was the Clemson players who were allegedly rather deliberately touching Ohio State players in some rather peculiar places when tOSU played them. Clemson has it rolling right now, in fact, they are a step ahead of OSU.

Clemson is 2-0 vs. OSU in the last 5 years, both in huge games, the 31-0 beat-down was a low-point off my OSU existance.

Clemson has more wins vs. OSU in the last decade than:  Rutgers, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Maryland, and Illinois....COMBINED!

Hey, we usually have 2 or 3 de-commits every year.  This is not that big of a deal.

I hope the kid is happy, has  a nice career.

For me, one of the reasons this bothers me even a little bit is our recent record against Clemson.   I look forward to the day we get back to the CFP and can beat them. They've  beaten Coach Meyer twice here at OSU, so you can bet he's always trying to figure that one out.

If he left because of the suspension, then his commitment was never that strong and he never really wanted to be a Buckeye. With recruits, nothing is official until the paper work is sent in. tOSU has gotten kids to flip commitments late before, and I don't see why they couldn't do it with a LB this year to fill this kids place.

HS
Buckeye Chuck's picture

People seem to be overthinking this. The decommitment came right after Clemson offered him, and then he ends up committing to Clemson within days. He got the offer he really wanted. I kind of wish kids wouldn't make weak "commitments" if they're so easily swayed away, but such is life.

I am not at all surprised that this young man committed to Clemson.  His high school, as 419Buck remarked, is as Christian as Christian gets.   Clemson is proud of their team prayer sessions!   He will fit into that subculture very well.  There is nothing wrong with that unless one values diversity in the college experience.   Life is much simpler when you surround yourself with others just like yourself!
